ABSTRACT

The human being in the course of evolution has changed the perception of food, leaving aside the consumption of meat and its derivatives due to ethical and moral factors, where it is known that diet has great relevance in general health, being a factor of risk for the appearance of various diseases, which is why saliva has been used as a diagnostic tool. To describe and compare the Mediterranean Diet index according to salivary pH in female dentistry students between 20 and 30 years old. Comparative cross-sectional descriptive study. Seventeen adult women selected by non-probabilistic criteria participated in the Dentistry career, who were evaluated in their Mediterranean Diet index and salivary pH. Student's T test for independent samples and Mann-Whitney U test were applied to compare characteristics between groups based on salivary pH. There are significant differences between groups for the frequency of consumption of whole grains (p = 0.026), lean meats (p = 0.021) and salivary pH (p < 0.001). There is a predominance towards low adherence to a Mediterranean diet, with significant differences in the frequency of consumption of whole grains and lean meats, the consumption of these being an indicator of oral risk determined by pH.

ABSTRACT

This study assessed the influence of pH variation on the volumetric change of EndoSequence BC Sealer compared to AH Plus Jet. Eighteen single-rooted teeth were uniformly prepared and filled with one of the sealers. After 24-h storing, samples were scanned in a micro-CT device. Then, roots were immersed in 20 ml phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) with pH of 5, 7 or 12 at 37°C for 7 and 30 days and rescanned. Statistical analysis was performed using Shapiro-Wilk's test, one-way ANOVA and Tukey's or Student's t-tests (p < 0.05). Differences between sealers were observed only at neutral pH and after 30 days of acidic pH exposure, with a higher loss of EndoSequence (p < 0.05). After 7 days, alkaline pH reduced and increased the volumetric loss of EndoSequence and AH Plus, respectively, compared to neutral pH (p < 0.05). It can be concluded that the pH directly influenced the volumetric change of both tested root canal sealers in different ways.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Compare the pH values and calcium ion release of calcium hydroxide-based liner materials before and after light-curing. Material and Methods: The materials evaluated were: hydrox-cal white (HW), hydrox-cal dentin (HD), Biocal (BC) and UltraBlend Plus (UB). 120 samples of the liner materials were inserted into a PVC tube (n=15). The samples from HW+A, HD+A, BC+A and UB+A were subjected to photoactivation. The other groups HW+N, HD+N, BC+N and UB+N were only inserted in a glass tube with deionized water. The pH was measured 24 hours and 14 days after the inclusion of the samples with the aid of a pH meter. The calcium release was analyzed with the aid of an atomic absorption spectophotometer at 24h and 14 days. The results were submitted to the Shapiro-Wilk test, followed by ANOVA and Tukey test (p=0.05). Results: In 24h, the groups that were not light cured showed the highest pH values (p<0.05). In 14 days, BC+N and BC+A demonstrated the lowest pH values. The groups that were not light cured also showed higher calcium release values in 24h and 14 days (p<0.05). Conclusion: Photoactivation of calcium hydroxide-based liner materials negatively interferes with calcium ion release, as well as with pH.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Nowadays there is an increase in the consumption of acidic drinks, especially the fermented ones. Its ingestion is closely associated with the demineralization of superficial dental tissues, which characterizes dental erosion. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pH of industrialized and natural drinks. The sample consisted of soft drinks, natural and artificial juices, fermented drinks, isotonic drinks and energy from different commercial brands acquired in the city of Niterói (RJ). The products were kept at room temperature (25oC) for 1 hour and were aliquoted 3 mL of each drink to a Becker to measure pH in a specific electrode coupled to a potentiometer. The readings were performed in triplicate. The mean pH ranged from 2.34 to 4.31, the most acidic drink was the refrigerant and the less acidic, the curd. It was found that all drinks analyzed had an acidic pH. Thus, potentially erosive dental structures.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Maximum decrease of blood pressure and number of minutes of hypotension were independently associated with umbilical arterial pH. However, the impact of hypotension considering the duration of it on umbilical arterial pH is unknown. METHODS: Pregnant women aged ≥ 20 years who delivered a baby at full-term via a cesarean delivery under a single-shot spinal anesthesia between January 2017 and March 2019 were included. The main outcome was to predict umbilical arterial pH, based on the value of the time integral of hypotension. Patient demographics, patient comorbidities, and intraoperative data, including the total dose of ephedrine and phenylephrine by fetal delivery and cumulative duration of maternal hypotension, were evaluated. Maternal hypotension was reflected as a decrease in systolic arterial pressure and mean arterial pressure to < 80% of baseline values. The systolic arterial pressure and mean arterial pressure were independently included in a multiple regression analysis along with all other explanatory factors to predict the umbilical arterial pH. RESULTS: Of the 416 eligible patients, 381 were enrolled. When including the systolic arterial pressure or mean arterial pressure in the model, emergency cases, the total dose of ephedrine, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and systolic arterial pressure or mean arterial pressure values were found to be significant predictive factors of umbilical arterial pH. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that an elevated time integral of maternal hypotension may have a negative impact on umbilical arterial pH. Therefore, to minimize the risk of fetal acidosis, maternal hypotension should be prevented with the consideration of vasopressors selection.

ABSTRACT

The effect of an arginine gel on pH and salivary flow was evaluated after fourteen days of use in women with mild demineralization. A controlled pilot clinical trial was established in which 20 women aged 18-23 years, systemically healthy and with at least one dental organ with demineralization ICDAS 3 were included, two groups: Group A / without arginine (N = 10) and Group B / with arginine (N = 10). A clinical evaluation was carried out, and a sample of unstimulated saliva was taken to determine the pH and the measurement of salivary flow at the beginning and 15 days after using the gel. Statistical analysis was performed with the GraphPad Prism version 8 program. A p <0.05 was considered statistically significant. In both groups, salivary pH was maintained close to neutrality without statistically significant differences, and salivary flow remained at normal values after using the hydrogel for 14 days, although statistically significant differences were observed in the intergroup comparison. Using a gel with arginine for 14 days kept the neutral pH and salivary flow at normal levels without statistically significant differences from the control group.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Dental caries is a disease caused by the interaction of several factors, including diet, since the development of the biological environment that promotes cariogenic bacterial metabolism often depends on it. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of caries in preschool children from Huaura, Peru, and to confirm if there is an association between their salivary pH and body mass index (BMI) and the level of knowledge about oral health of one of their parents. Materials and methods: A non-experimental, correlational, and cross-sectional study was conducted in 126 preschoolers equally distributed in 3 age groups (3, 4, and 5 years old). The association between the presence of caries and the variables considered was determined by means of the chi-square test of independence, with a confidence level of 95% and a type I error of 5%. In addition, a multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to calculate the probability of caries development in relation to each risk factor. Results: The prevalence of caries was 80.2% (95%CI:73.2-87.2); furthermore, salivary pH (p=0.012) and the level of parental knowledge (p<0.001) were significantly associated with caries occurrence. Regarding the multiple regression analysis, an OR=0.12 (95%CI:0.02-0.63) was obtained for pH and an OR=0.50 (95%CI:0.35-0.74) for the level of parental knowledge in relation to the probability of caries development. Conclusion: The level of parental knowledge about oral health and high salivary pH levels of preschoolers were protective factors against caries development in the study population. On the other hand, no association was found between BMI and the presence of caries in 5-year-old preschoolers.

ABSTRACT

Objective: to measure the erosive potential of non- -conventional chewing gums available in the Brazilian market. Material and methods: this is an in vitro study using the following flavors of chewing gums from the Brazilian market: Poosh® (tongue cleaner); Plutonita® (freezing hug, burning bite, witch slime and acid tongue); TNT® (blood, lava and tomb). For acidity analysis, pH and titratable acidity (TA) readings were performed in triplicate using a potentiometer and combined glass electrode in solutions obtained after maceration of the chewing gums in double deionized water. In solutions with pH values below 5.5, the TA was measured by adding aliquots of 100 µL 0.1 M NaOH, until pH 5.5 was reached. The results were submitted to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Comparisons of pH and titratable acidity means were performed by Tukey test at a 5% significance level (p<0.05). Results: the pH values that ranged from 2.4 (freezing hug) to 3.5 (witch's slime) differed significantly from the control (mineral water/ pH=6.2). Titratable acidity values ranged from 628µL of 0.1 M NaOH (blood) to 10700µL of 0.1 M NaOH (freezing hug). The freezing hug flavor chewing gum had the lowest pH and the highest titratable acidity differing significantly from the other flavors. Conclusions: the evaluated chewing gums are acidic, but differ in their erosive potential. Their abusive consumption may constitute a risk factor for dental erosion.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the ability of saliva in controlling the growth and the biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) as well as the effect of histatin-5 anti-biofilm relate to pH and saliva viscosity. Material and Methods: The S. mutans biofilm assayed by crystal violet 1% and its growth measured by spectrophotometer. The saliva viscosity was analyzed by viscometer, and pH of saliva was measured by pH meter. Results: Based on the optical density values, growth of S. mutans in saliva ranged <300 CFU/mL (0.1 nm) at concentrations of 25%, 12.5% and 6.25% for 24 hours. Whereas at the 48 h and 72 h period of incubation shown an increase in growth of S. mutans ranged 300-600 CFU/mL (0.2-0.36 nm). The inhibitory biofilm formation of S. mutans in saliva was significantly higher at concentrations of 12.5% and 6.25% at 24 h incubation times on a moderate scale, whereas the histatin-5 was effective to inhibit S. mutans biofilm on the 50 and 25 ppm. The saliva possessed a higher inhibitory of biofilm S. mutans than histatin-5 and good level viscosity (0.91-0.92 cP). Conclusion: The saliva was able to control the growth of S. mutans, and histatin-5 can inhibit the biofilm formation S. mutans. Furthermore, the saliva was also able to respond to the pH change with good viscosity of saliva.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate if the contact of calcium hydroxide cements with polyacrylic and phosphoric acids would alter selected microscopic and physical and chemical properties. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Chemically activated (Hydro C and Dycal Advanced Formula II) and resin-modified photoactivated (Ultra-blend Plus) calcium hydroxide cements were examined after exposure to the following different strategies: contact with no substance (control group); rinsing with water and drying; contact with polyacrylic acid, rinsing with water, and drying; and contact with phosphoric acid, rinsing with water, and drying. Surface morphology, determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), water sorption and solubility, and the release of hydroxyl ions were evaluated. RESULTS: SEM showed a greater impact of the conditioning acids on the surface of the chemically activated cements. Ultra-blend Plus obtained the highest value of sorption (516.8 µg/mm3) and solubility (381.1 µg/mm3) and Hydro C had the lowest values 251.9 µg/mm3 and 206.3 µg/mm3 respectively. Considering the release of hydroxyl ions in comparison with time, Hydro C and Ultra-blend Plus presented significant statistical difference for polyacrylic and phosphoric acid subgroups. CONCLUSION: Hydro C and Dycal presented intensification of surface irregularities after contact with conditioning acids. The chemically activated materials suffered a decrease in sorption and solubility. The action of the conditioning acids promotes greater increase of the release of hydroxyl ions for Hydro C and Dycal.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study evaluated the decomposition rate (DR), pH, enamel color alteration (DE) and whiteness index (DWI) promoted by at-home and in-office bleaching. Enamel surface was submitted to (n=10): at-home (10%, 15%, 20% carbamide peroxide - CP, 6% hydrogen peroxide -HP) and three 35% HP agents with light irradiation (LED, laser, and halogen) or no treatment (control). The DR and pH of agents were measured after 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 h (at-home) or after 5, 15, 20, 30 and 40 min (in-office). Color parameters (L*, a*, b*, DE, DWI) were determined at baseline and after bleaching. DR, pH, L*, a*, b* data were analyzed by one-way (at-home) or two-way (in-office) repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey test. DE and DWI, by one-way (at-home) or two-way (in-office) ANOVA and Tukey test. DR of at-home agents was similar after 6 and 8 h (p>0.05), with pH close to neutral (6.5 to 6.9, CP) or acid 5.9 (6% HP). From 4 to 8 h, DE was higher for 15% and 20% CP compared with 10% CP (p<0.05). After 40 min, DR of 35% HP agents was similar and all exhibited significant DE in one application (p<0.05), regardless light irradiation. DWI indicated whitening effect with no differences among groups (p>0.05). One 35% HP showed alkaline pH, and the others, pH < 5.5. At-home agents could be applied for 2 h (15%, 20% CP, 6% HP) and 4 h (10% CP) and the in-office agents, up to 40 min in one application, without light.

ABSTRACT

Objective: to evaluate antimicrobial action, pH, and tissue dissolution capacity of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) gel and solution. Methods: The 2.5% NaOCl gel was produced from a colloidal base. The test groups included 2.5% NaOCl gel and solution and the control groups included gel base and distilled water. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated by the broth dilution technique against Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212) at 15 and 30 seconds and at 1, 5, and 10 minutes. To evaluate tissue dissolution capacity, 30 pulp fragments of bovine incisors were weighed, 10 for each test group and 5 for each control group before and after exposure to the chemical auxiliaries. The final mass percentage of each fragment was calculated. The pH of the substances was measured in triplicate through a digital pH meter. Results: pH levels of 13.08 and 9.75 were observed for 2.5% NaOCl solution and gel, respectively. The antimicrobial action of 2.5% NaOCl was the same for both solution and gel, for all tested times. The 2.5% NaOCl solution group showed higher tissue dissolution capacity (Kruskal-Wallis and Student-Newman-Keuls tests P<0.0001). Conclusions: The type of medium, either solution or gel, containing 2.5% NaOCl did not influence the antimicrobial action at any of the tested times. However, 2.5% NaOCl gel did not present tissue dissolution capacity

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the influence of gustatory stimuli on the buffering capacity of saliva. Material and Methods: The buccal ph of 18 male volunteers aged 18-35 years was measured after a mouthwash with 20 ml of water as a control, and in individual disposable cups they collected the saliva for two minutes. Then, each of chewed bubble gum with sugar for two minutes, discarding the gum and made new collection of saliva, for two minutes in other disposable cups individualized. After collection, each volunteer was again subject to regular brushing with toothpaste and waited another ten minutes. The same procedure was repeated with all other substances. Salivary buffer capacity was determined by Ericsson technique. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and the means were compared by the Scott-Knott grouping test and Mann-Whitney test at 5% probability. Estimates of Pearson correlations were calculated in order to determine possible associations between the variables. Results: It was not found statistically significant differences between the initial pH variation and after eating food (p>0.05), or between gustatory stimulation and variation of salivary buffer capacity (p>0.05). Conclusion: There is no influence of gustatory stimulus aroma and flavor on the variation of salivary buffer capacity.

ABSTRACT

A saliva artificial atuou elevando o pH e reduzindo a acidez titulável.

The consumption of acid candy is associated with the etiology of dental erosion. This research aimed to evaluate the erosive potential of commercially available "zero sugar" tablets and hard candy. The "zero sugar" Halls® mini hard candies (extra-strong, watermelon, menthol and cherry) and the Melagrião® (lemon) and Valda® friends (menthol) tablets were analyzed. Two groups were formed: candies and tablets dissolved in distilled water (G-1) and candies and tablets dissolved in artificial saliva (G-2). The pH was measured using a potentiometer and combined glass electrode previously calibrated with standard solutions pH 7.0 and pH 4.0 before each reading. For verification of the titratable acidity, aliquots of 100 µL 0.1M NaOH were added under constant stirring until the pH reached 7.0. The results were submitted to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test comparisons, at a level of 5% of significance (p <0.05). The candies and tablets dilution in water (G-1) had pH values below 5.5, except for menthol flavor Valda® (pH = 6.1), which differed significantly from the others. After dilution in artificial saliva (G-2) all flavors had pH values above 5.5. In the comparison between the groups (G-1 and G-2), a significant elevation of pH was observed in the G-2 group. After dilution in water, the Melagrião® lemon and Mini Halls® watermelons had the highest titratable acidity differing significantly from the others. It was observed a significant reduction of titratable acidity after dilution in the artificial saliva (G-2). According to the results, most of the candies and tablets analyzed are acidic. Dilution in artificial saliva raised the pH and reduced the titratable acidity, thereby reducing the erosive potential of the products.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess and compare the erosive potential of commercially available beverages and to evaluate the relationship between mineral loss and physiochemical properties (pH and titratable acidity) of different beverages. Material and Methods: Seven commercially available beverages [4 soft drinks, 1 chlorhexidine mouthwash and 2 controls (Amul milk and human saliva)] were tested. The pH and tritratable acidity of the beverages was determined. Fifty-six human premolars were sectioned into enamel and root surface (total 112 specimens) by using diamond-cutting machine. The specimens were immersed in each beverage for 24-hour intervals at 370C. The weight loss of the specimens and mineral loss (calcium, phosphorus and fluoride) was determined at pre and post immersion and was subjected to statistical analysis at p<0.05 level of significance. Results: All beverages included in this were acidic. Nimbooz exhibited significant (p<0.05) weight loss compared to all other beverages. Fanta shows significantly (p<0.05) high loss of phosphorus and calcium for enamel and root surface respectively. There was a week correlation with pH and tritratable acidity and loss of minerals. Conclusion: The erosive potential of Fanta and Nimbooz was significant compared to other beverages. However, it must be considered that there are numerous factors, which may influence the erosion rate in the intra oral environment; hence the result of this in vitro study should be applied with caution.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This randomized controlled crossover clinical trial monitored the kinetics of salivary pH over time following the consumption of sour gummy candy. Material and Methods: Twenty participants underwent saliva assessment for flow, pH and buffer capacity. Following a two-arm crossover layout, the participants chewed a piece of a sour and a piece of an ordinary (control) gummy candy for 20 seconds. Participants expectorated saliva at 18 time points: immediately after ingesting the candies; then after every 15 second interval, for up to 1 minute; 30 seconds up to 4 minutes; 60 seconds up to 10 minutes; and at 15 minutes. The pH of the collected samples was measured with a pH microelectrode. The data concerning the pH measurements of the whole saliva samples collected over time following chewing of sour and ordinary gummy candies underwent repeated-measures three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) using a significance level of 5%. Results: Repeated-measures three-way analysis of variance demonstrated a significant interaction between the type of candy and time (p<0.001). Tukey's test revealed that with the consumption of sour gummy candy, the salivary pH showed an initial marked exponential drop and remained lower than that observed with the consumption of the ordinary version for up to 120 seconds. Conclusion: The consumption of sour gummy candy induces a major, transient fall in salivary pH, which may represent a risk factor for dental erosion.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the biocompatibility of methylene blue at different pH levels through the method of implantation in subcutaneous tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-four sterilized polyethylene tubes were allocated in the subcutaneous tissue of 28 rats, each one receiving four tubes, set into four groups: group tube (G-T)-empty tube, fibrin group (G-F)-tube filled with fibrin sponge, group methylene blue pH 7 (G-MB/pH 7)-tube filled with fibrin sponge soaked by methylene blue (100 µg/ml) at pH 7.0, and group methylene blue pH 1 (G-MB/pH 1)-tube filled with fibrin sponge and soaked by methylene blue (100 µg/ml) at pH 1.0. After 7, 15, and 30 days, seven animals from each group were euthanized, and the tubes involved by the surrounding tissue were removed and fixed with 4% buffered formaldehyde solution. The collected pieces were processed and histological sections (4 µm) were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and analyzed by light microscopy. Scores were assigned to analysis of histopathologic parameters. The results were statistically analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test (p ≤ 0.05). RESULTS: At 7 and 30 days, the G-MB/pH 1 group showed no significant difference in the G-T control group, while G-MB/pH 7 had a significant increase on tissue reaction, also when compared to G-T. At 15 days, there was no statistical difference between the groups. CONCLUSION: Within the limits of this study, it is concluded that methylene blue at pH 1.0 provides better biocompatibility than at pH 7.0.
