ABSTRACT

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Investigate evidence available on the efficacy, safety and acceptability of devices for the management of female urinary incontinence, in which clinical settings and specific female populations they have been tested. Learn more about healthcare professionals' perspectives and experiences regarding female urinary incontinence devices. BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence is defined as the involuntary leakage of urine, estimated to affect 25%-45% of women. Urinary incontinence predisposes the skin to urinary incontinence dermatitis, it is one of the most common documented causes of inappropriate urinary catheterisation, favouring catheter-associated infection. Several products for managing female urinary incontinence are available, no accurate and systematic data on usability, effectiveness and associated outcomes of these products are available. DESIGN AND METHODS: A scoping review was conducted, using a methodological framework including the following five steps: identification of the research question; identification of relevant documents; selection of documents included in the review; tracking of information and data; synthesis and reporting of results. Twenty-one articles were selected. PRISMA-ScR Checklist was followed. RESULTS: The devices explored in the studies were as follows: female external urinary catheter; disposable sanitary pads, diapers or sanitary pads used to manage urinary incontinence in women; mechanical devices; a new prototype of underwear that tracks where pads lose; reusable underwear for light incontinence; a new intelligent system pad. CONCLUSIONS: New smart pads, urine suction systems and female external catheters appear to be effective in preventing and reducing urinary incontinence dermatitis. The female external catheter reduces the days of indwelling catheterisation and could reduce the incidence of catheter associated urinary tract infection; therefore, it should be recommended.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:: To quantify the prevalence and incidence of different skin injuries, pressure ulcers (PU), skin tears (ST) and incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) in China, and to identify their causes to aid prevention and control. METHOD:: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted across nine tertiary hospitals. Registered nurses were trained on a standard approach to injury assessment and examination. The study was carried out at the same time on the same day across the participating centres. Participating patients were examined for PU, ST or IAD. RESULTS:: A total of 13,176 inpatients were assessed and 233 PU were identified, of which 126 occurred in hospitals, 99 cases at home and eight cases within community hospitals. In addition, there were 141 skin tears and 97 IADs. CONCLUSION:: This study involved the largest number of hospitals, to date (in China). Therefore, the prevalence and rate of incidence of skin injury obtained in this study may represent a regional baseline in China.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of modified perianal dressing on incontinence dermatitis in patients caused by pseudo-diarrhea in neurology department. Methods 100 patients with moderate and severe incontinence-associated dermatitis caused by pseudo-diarrhea in our hospital were included in the study. The patients were divided into observation group (n=50)and control group(n=50).The former group was treated with modified Conwhier hydrocolloid transparent paste directly applied after cutting. The effective rate of treatment for 3 days was observed in both groups. Result The observation group was superior to the control group in the effective rate of treatment for 3 days (P<0.05). Conclusions The modified Kanghuier hydrocolloid transparent sticking is effective in the treatment of incontinence-associated dermatitis caused by pseudo-diarrhea. It is worthy of clinical application and popularization.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the value of preventive nursing process in the management of incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) in the department of neurology. Methods From January 2016 to May 2016, 38 hospitalized patients with neurological disorders were set as the control group . The control group was given routine nursing according to traditional way, and another 38 patients hospitalized from June 2016 to October 2016 who were set as the observation group were implemented with IAD preventive nursing process, including the training of nurses, risk factor evaluation, measures implented and IAD health education. The two groups were compared in terms of incidence, severity and harms of IAD. Results The incontinence incidence of IAD in the observation group was lower than that of the control group (P<0.05). The IADS score of the observation group was significantly lower as well (P<0.05). Conclusion Preventive nursing process can help to reduce the risk and severity of IADS in the patients with urinary incontinence in neurology department.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of quality control circle on reducing incidence of fecal incontinence dermatitis of intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Methods Quality control circle team was set up and theme was determined then retrospective analysis was carried out for the occurrence of defect in patients with fecal incontinence dermatitis from January to May 2014 before quality control circle activities. Occurrence reasons were explored and corrective measures were formulated and implemented. After the implementation of quality control circle, the occurrence of defect from June to October 2014 was observed. Results After the implementation of quality control circle, the occurrence of fecal incontinence dermatitis reduced from 24.5%(24/98) to 10.4% (10/96) and the difference was statistically significant,χ2=6.65, P<0.05. Conclusion Quality control circle is effective for reducing the occurrence of ICU fecal incontinence dermatitis and continual improvement of nursing quality.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the effect of 3M skin protective film combined with colostomy powder on dermatitis caused by bowl movement incontinence . Methods Sixty-three patients with fecal incontinence were randomly divided into observation group (n =32) and control group (n=31). The control group received routine nursing and the observation group was treated with 3M skin protective film combined with Cambel colostomy powder. The two groups were compared in terms of incidence and severity of incontinent dermatitis. Result The duration of dermatitis in the observation group was significantly longer than that in the control group, while the incidence of incontinent dermatitis and severity were significantly lower than those in the control group (all P<0.01). Conclusion 3M skin protective film combined with Cambel colostomy powder can prevent incontinent dermatitis so as to relieve patients′pain. It is worthy of clinical popularization and application.
