ABSTRACT

In this article we analyze how syngas produced in a renewable way can replace fossil-fuel based syngas production and thereby play an essential role in the decarbonization of industry. We show that in essentially all industrial applications renewable H2 and/or CO can replace syngas from fossil fuel feedstocks, and quantify the flows of these chemical building blocks required for the transformation of industry towards a net-zero emitting sector. We also undertake a techno-economic analysis, in which we demonstrate that under specific assumptions for the learning rates of some of the key process components, renewable syngas can become cost-competitive with that produced from fossil fuels. Cost competitiveness, however, only materializes for four of the five routes when natural gas prices are at least around 3 €/GJ and carbon taxes increase from 90 €/tCO2 today to 300 €/tCO2 in 2050.

ABSTRACT

Under the background of increasingly fierce global economic competition and severe climate change, seeking new soft resource input is the key for China to break through the bottleneck of economic transformation. Based on the data from 278 Chinese cities from 2006 to 2019, multi-dimensional empirical tests were conducted to investigate the relationship between digital economy (DE) and spatial transfer of carbon emissions (CE). The results show that DE directly reduced CE. Mechanism analysis shows that DE reduced CE through local industrial transformation and upgrading (ITU). Spatial analysis shows that DE reduced local CE while aggravating neighboring CE. The spatial transfer of CE was attributed to the fact that when DE promoted the local ITU, it induced the transfer of the backward and polluting industries to neighboring regions, resulting in the spatial transfer of CE. Moreover, the spatial transfer effect of CE was maximum at 200 km. However, in recent years, rapid DE development has weakened the spatial transfer effect of CE. The results can provide insights into understanding the carbon refuge effect of industrial transfer in China in the context of DE and facilitate formulating appropriate industrial policies to promote inter-regional carbon reduction synergy. Thus, this study can provide a theoretical reference for achieving the dual-carbon target of China and the green economic recovery of other developing countries.

ABSTRACT

The increasingly acute consequences of the climate crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the energy crisis have put industrial policy back. The papers in this issue examine how different countries implement industrial policy for sustainable development from a variety of perspectives. A successful transition to sustainable development seems to require not only the mix of carrots and sticks but also a right mix of creation versus destruction, as in the case of the creation of renewable businesses and the destruction of fossil-fuel businesses. Furthermore, because institutional diversity and the risk of capture can result in very distinct economic, social, and environmental effects, consideration of heterogeneity at the country and sector levels and coordination of vested interests are essential ingredients for sustainable industrial policies, as shown by the case of industrial policy in France and the two industry cases in India. By contrast, the Amazon Fund case is indicative of the three success elements: multi-stakeholder governance, pay-for-performance funding, and non-reimbursable project financing. These three elements can be summarized as local ownership and accountable governance, provided with both carrots and sticks. The problematic case of urban development driven by the oil industry in Ghana can be criticized in terms of the lack of local ownership of the oil industry, which has led to all rents being monopolized by the absentee class. By comparison, the mixed success of cases of industrial symbiosis in Uganda is attributed to the lack of effective carrots. In sum, industrial policy for sustainable development requires handling well all three types of failure, namely, market, system, and capability failures, because it necessitates building capabilities of involved actors and coordinating actions of agents, in addition to providing optimal incentives to reflect externalities of global public goods. Overall, the shifting focus of industrial policy is consistent with the shift of the role of the state, from developmental to entrepreneurial, and finally to environmental state.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Since inception, the United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has kept a robust record of regulated medical devices (MDs). Based on these data, can we gain insight into the innovation dynamics of the industry, including the potential for industrial transformation?. AREAS COVERED: Using premarket notifications (PMNs) and approvals (PMAs) data, it is shown that from 1976 to 2020 the total composite (PMN+PMA) metric follows a single secular period: 20.5 years (applications - peak-to-peak: 1992-2012; trough: 2002) and 26.5 years (registrations - peak-to-peak: 1992-2019; trough: 2003), with a peak-to-trough relative percentage difference of 24% and 28%, respectively. Importantly, PMNs and PMAs independently present as an inverse structure. EXPERT OPINION: The evidence suggests that MD innovation is driven by a singular secular Kuznets-like cyclic phenomenon (independent of economic crises) derived from a fundamental shift from simple (PMNs) to complex (PMAs) MDs. Portentously, while the COVID-19 crisis may not affect the overriding dynamic, the anticipated yet significant (~25%) MD innovation drop may be potentially attenuated with attentive measures by MD stakeholders. Limitations of this approach and further thoughts complete this perspective.

ABSTRACT

The 14th Five-Year Plan period is a critical period for China to achieve high-quality development. Based on super-efficiency slacks-based measure (SBM) model, grey-related analysis (GRA) and other models, this paper studies the heterogeneity of the coupling relationship among technological innovation, industrial transformation and environmental efficiency in the Huaihai Economic Zone during the period of 2005-2019. In addition, it analyzes the coupling mechanism of single and binary systems to the ternary system, which is of great significance for the collaborative symbiosis among systems. The findings are as follows. 1) The technological innovation, industrial transformation and environmental efficiency (TIE) systems of the Huaihai Economic Zone had significant spatial-temporal heterogeneity. Although their evaluation value fluctuated, the development trends are all positive. Ultimately, technological innovation is characterized by being high in the northeast and low in the southwest around Xuzhou, while other systems are relatively staggered in space. 2) The coupling of TIE systems is in transition, lack of orderly integration and benign interaction. However, the developing trend of interaction is also upward, and a spatial pattern driven by Xuzhou and Linyi as the dual cores has gradually formed. Moreover, the coupling is mostly manifested as outdated technological innovation and industrial transformation. Except for the final coordination of regenerative cities, the other resource types are all in transition. Cities in all traffic locations are still in transition. The overall system interaction of cities on Longhai Line (Lanzhou-Lianyungang Railway) is relatively optimal, and cities on Xinshi Line (Xinxiang-Rizhao Railway) are accelerating toward synergy. 3) The coupling status of TIE systems depends on the development of the single system and the interaction of the binary (2E) system. The coupling is closely related to technological innovation and Technology-Industry system, and is hindered by the inefficient interaction of Technology-Environment system. Specifically, the synergy of regenerative cities is attributed to the advantage of a single system and the effective integration of 2E systems. Beneficial from the advantages of environmental efficiency, the cities on Xinshi Line promote the synergy of the 2E and TIE systems. Therefore, while the Huaihai Economic Zone stimulates the development potential of the single and 2E systems, it is necessary to amplify the superimposition effect of systems in accordance on the basis of resource and location.

ABSTRACT

Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a revolutionary human-computer interaction technology, which includes both BCI that can output instructions directly from the brain to external devices or machines without relying on the peripheral nerve and muscle system, and BCI that bypasses the peripheral nerve and muscle system and inputs electrical, magnetic, acoustic and optical stimuli or neural feedback directly to the brain from external devices or machines. With the development of BCI technology, it has potential application not only in medical field, but also in non-medical fields, such as education, military, finance, entertainment, smart home and so on. At present, there is little literature on the relevant application of BCI technology, the current situation of BCI industrialization at home and abroad and its commercial value. Therefore, this paper expounds and discusses the above contents, which are expected to provide valuable information for the public and organizations, BCI researchers, BCI industry translators and salespeople, and improve the cognitive level of BCI technology, further promote the application and industrial transformation of BCI technology and enhance the commercial value of BCI, so as to serve mankind better.

ABSTRACT

Industrial transformation and high-quality urban development have become the core issues of urban-rural coordination and the leap forward in development in the new era. The research perspective of 'pattern-process-mechanism' is needed to reveal the spatiotemporal correlation characteristics of industrial transformation and urban economic efficiency evolution, and to expand its systematic, comprehensive and regional characteristics. Based on the geographical cognitive of local effects and spatial non-stationarity, we used a quantile regression model and a geographically weighted regression model to analyze the dynamic mechanism of industrial transformation and urban economic efficiency to explain the path characteristics of urban development and industrial transformation of the Yangtze River economic belt. The conclusions are as follows: (1) From 2000 to 2015, the average economic efficiency in the Yangtze River economic belt increased from 0.05 to 0.332, and the pattern gradually changed from spatial homogeneity to spatial mosaic; (2) From 2000 to 2015, the range and intensity of industrial transformation in the Yangtze River economic belt showed an increasing trend, while the speed of industrial transformation showed a downward trend, and the high-value unit of the three showed the characteristics of gradual homogenization; (3) From the perspective of the impact of industrial transformation on urban economic efficiency, the impact of the range and speed of industrial transformation on urban economic efficiency was gradually weakened, while the impact of the intensity of industrial transformation on urban economic efficiency was gradually strengthened, and the patterns of the three show the characteristics of a spatially inverted U-shaped distribution with high values in the middle reaches and low values in the upstream and downstream areas.

ABSTRACT

Traditional Chinese medicine( TCM) processing is a traditional pharmaceutical technology unique to China, which is an important means to ensure the safety and effectiveness of clinical medication. As China' s intangible cultural heritage,it contains a wealth of wisdom. With the evolution and optimization of processing methods,Indigo Naturalis,an ancient dye,has gradually become an effective medicine for the treatment of high fever in children, colitis, psoriasis, and leukemia. However, the quality of Indigo Naturalis pieces is difficult to be fundamentally improved due to the unique traditional processing method, complex technology, unclear principle, and outdated equipment. After spending 20 years in exploring the inheritance, innovation, and transformation of ancient lawtheory-principle-technology-equipment-quality control in Indigo Naturalis processing, our research group has basically expounded the processing principle and realized the modern expression and industrial transformation of traditional technology. As China enters a new era,the TCM industry has begun to undergo the high-quality transformation. It is urgent to carry out new excavations and improve the processing, quality, and clinical application of Indigo Naturalis pieces,to better inherit and innovate traditional processing technologies and meet people's demand for high-quality TCM health services.

ABSTRACT

Industrial transformation and upgrading is an important step for China to carry out cleaner production and achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. With the help of green finance, we can optimize the allocation of financial resources and promote the optimization and upgrading of industrial structure. In order to explore the impact efficiency and policy effect of green finance on industrial transformation and upgrading in China, through the establishment of VAR model and super-efficiency DEA model, the relationship between green finance and industrial transformation and upgrading and its impact on efficiency are studied. In addition, the Tobit regression model is used to empirically test the impact of public environmental demands, government regulations, and their interaction terms on the efficiency of green finance in promoting industrial transformation and upgrading. The results show that the overall efficiency of green finance in promoting industrial transformation and upgrading is high, but it shows a downward trend, which may be due to the unbalanced development of the green financial system, information asymmetry, and the absence of enterprises from regulation. The impact coefficient of input-oriented government regulation is significantly negative, which indicates that increasing the investment in pollution control may encourage polluting enterprises' emission behavior to obtain benefits. The impact of performance-oriented government regulation and public environmental demands on efficiency is not significant, which indicates that the supervision and binding force of enterprises are insufficient. Public environmental demands and input government regulations have significant synergistic governance advantages, indicating that the government should enhance the regulatory intensity of differentiated policies. The study provides a reference for the government to enhance the intensity of policy regulation and establish a diversified environmental governance system.

ABSTRACT

The iterative innovation of processing technology is one of the important tasks in studies on processing of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM). It is also the prerequisite for modern, refined, automatic and intelligent manufacturing of TCM pieces. Microwave processing is a new fire processing technique developed in the recent 30 years, with a unique thermodynamic form, and energy transfer and transformation laws. Moreover, it owns the advantages of a high processing efficiency, good product properties and low production energy consumption, with great application prospects. This paper introduced the study overview of microwave expansion technology in the food industry, reviewed the origin of microwave processing technology of TCM, and expounded the basic concept, principle and main purpose of microwave processing technology used in TCM. Then, the impacts of drug factors and microwave factors on the microwave processing effect were summarized, the industrial equipment that could be used for microwave processing was listed, and the impacts of microwave heating on starch, polysaccharide, protein and other components in Chinese herbal medicines were analyzed. Furthermore, the study advance of microwave processing of 14 herbs was investigated, including Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparaia, Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum and Asini Corii Colla; and the appearance and components of herbs processed by traditional processing method and microwave processing method were compared, so as to reveal the opportunities and challenges of microwave processing technology in the industrial transformation. We hoped that the systematic study of microwave processing technology could provide new ideas and techniques for the high-quality and high-level development of the TCM pieces industry in the new era, and promote its inheritance, innovation and transformation.

ABSTRACT

Exploring fiscal reform's pollution effect draws increasing attention. Our paper brings a new perspective, i.e., the vertical fiscal imbalance (VFI) perspective, to study such issue. With the panel data of China's provincial level from 1999 to 2016, we reveal whether and how VFI affects environmental pollution. We find that VFI significantly enhances the environmental pollution level of China. As the VFI increases, environmental pollution effect caused by VFI appears to be aggravated. According to the transmission path check, we confirm in our paper that VFI can indirectly lead to environmental degradation by affecting the two channels environmental regulation and industrial transformation. Further, through the sub-sample regressions, we find that the impacts of VFI on environmental pollution as well as the transmission paths are regionally heterogeneous. Finally, we believe that using the VFI as a variable to explore fiscal reform's effect on environment is of rationality, and for a better environmental quality, VFI should be avoided.

ABSTRACT

The contradiction between ecological environment and industrial economic development is extremely prominent in resource-based areas. We conducted an in-depth research on the effects and mechanisms of different types of industrial agglomeration on eco-efficiency in nine typical resource-based provinces (Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Guizhou, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Qinghai, Ningxia and Xinjiang) from 2006 to 2015, including specialization, related and unrelated diversification. The results showed that the specialization had a negative impact on eco-efficiency. The industrial specialization degree of all provinces except Ningxia showed a downward trend, which was conducive to the improvement of eco-efficiency. The impacts of related diversification on eco-efficiency were characterized by a U-shaped curve. The degrees of related diversification in Shanxi, Qinghai and Ningxia were less than the critical value of 1.49, which inhibited the improvement of eco-efficiency. Other provinces had crossed the inflection point, with a promotion role of related diversification on eco-efficiency. The unrelated diversification had a negative impact on eco-efficiency. The degrees of unrelated diversification in Shanxi, Guizhou, Shaanxi, and Heilongjiang declined slightly, which was conducive to the improvement of eco-efficiency. In other provinces, the unrelated diversification increased significantly, which was not conducive to the improvement of eco-efficiency. Our results could provide theoretical basis for path selection and policy formulation of industrial green transformation in resource-based regions.

ABSTRACT

We investigated the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contents in 68 soils samples collected at housing developments that represent different length of development periods across Beijing. Based on the data, we derived a mass balanced mathematical model to simulate the dynamics of PAH accumulations in urban soils as affected by the urban developments. The key parameters were estimated by fitting the modified mass balance model to the data of PAH concentrations vs. building age of the sampling green area. The total PAH concentrations would increase from the baseline of 267 ng g(-1) to 3631 ng g(-1) during the period of 1978-2048. It showed that the dynamic changes in the rates of accumulations of light and heavy PAH species were related to the shifting of sources of fuels, combustion efficiencies, and amounts of energy consumed during the course of development.
