ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To adapt the Scale of Perception of Respect for and Maintenance of the Dignity of the Inpatient (CuPDPH) to the Brazilian language and culture and to assess its psychometric properties. RESULTS: The scale was evaluated by 15 experts, and 239 patients from three tertiary hospitals in Rio de Janeiro. All participants signed a consent form. Data have shown adequacy of the model (KMO=0.839, Bartlett's test of sphericity: χ2(171) = 2241.3, p = 0.000010), good adjusted content validity (CVCa ≥ 0.90), internal consistency and reliability, such as α = 0.927. DISCUSSION: CuPDPH is a rating scale on observable professional attitudes. Illnesses change lives and impose adaptation to a new situation, perceived as depersonalization, leading patients to try to regain control of their lives. Patients expressed "ill will" to fill out the scale. Psychiatric patients' scale filling time was higher than others. A sample from three Rio de Janeiro third-level hospitals may not reflect the country's population; also, this adaptation may not comprise all linguistic variations of Brazilian Portuguese and Portuguese-speaking countries. CONCLUSION: The Portuguese version of the Scale of Perception of Respect for and Maintenance of the Dignity of the Inpatient (CuPDPH), a 19-item, six-component version is a reliable instrument to measure the perception of internal medicine, surgical, and psychiatric patients on the maintenance of their dignity in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This knowledge could be used in advancing research on patients' perception of dignity, as well as professional ethical competencies, staff-patient relationship skills, and leadership development in medical and other healthcare professional education.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The present study aimed to examine dyadic associations between attachment insecurity and emotional intimacy in same-sex male couples, and to investigate whether and how each partner's internalized homonegativity (IH) moderated these associations. Methods: The sample included 138 same-sex male couples. Both dyad members completed self-report measures of attachment insecurity, emotional intimacy, and IH. The actor-partner interdependence model with moderation analysis was applied. Results: Indicated that higher levels of actor's and partner's attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance were associated with lower actor's emotional intimacy. IH moderated the partner effects of attachment avoidance on emotional intimacy. The partner's higher attachment avoidance was associated with one's own lower emotional intimacy at low (but not high) levels of one's own IH and at high (but not low) levels of the partner's IH. Discussion: Findings suggest that the partner's attachment avoidance may differently affect one's own emotional intimacy depending on the IH levels of both dyad members. Helping partnered sexual minority men decrease attachment insecurity while recognizing their own and their partners' IH may promote relationship quality.

ABSTRACT

Abstract In this psychometric research, the validity and reliability of the 45-item Sternberg Triangular Love Scale (STLS) was analyzed in a sample of 296 people from the city of Arequipa (located in southern Peru). 56.1% were women and 43.9% were men with an average age of 40.7 years. The STLS has three components: Intimacy, Commitment and Passion. For statistical processing, confirmatory factor analysis was applied to analyze the internal structure and the ordinal alpha test to estimate reliability. It was found that the STLS has a three-factor structure, after eliminating 11 items because they loaded on two or more factors. The scale was reduced to 34 items, with adequate goodness-of-fit indexes and reliability with indexes greater than .93 in each of its three factors.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To obtain a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of sexuality within the couple relationship when one of the partners has received a diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease. This study aimed to listen to the voices of both partners, and to investigate how their intimate relationship has been impacted by an Alzheimer's diagnosis. METHODS: This study adopted a qualitative phenomenological approach, and the method used was Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The data was collected based on interviews with six couples, where one of the spouses had a mild to moderate Alzheimer's diagnosis. The interviews were recorded and transcribed, and a detailed analysis of each interview was performed. FINDINGS: From the detailed analysis of the transcribed interviews, six main themes emerged: Sexual expression today; Alzheimer's and sexuality; desire to be a sexual being; different sexualities; sense of couplehood; and uncertain future. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study provide a deeper insight into experiences of sexuality for couples living with Alzheimer's. Sexuality and intimacy of couples living with Alzheimer's continues to be an important aspect of the relationship, and in general, the partners wish to have the opportunity to express their sexuality. The construction of a sense of couplehood during the marriage tends to be a significant factor to sustain the changes that arise in the intimate relationship because of the diagnosis. However, despite the growing recognition of the existence and importance of sexuality in later life, persons with Alzheimer's have only recently starting to be recognized as sexual beings who wish to be heard.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: There is growing evidence for the need to recognize persons with dementia as sexual beings who wish to continue expressing their sexuality, including within their couple relationship. The aim of this literature review was to investigate empirical qualitative studies that examined sexuality and sexual intimacy in the couple relationship when one spouse has dementia. METHOD: A systematic literature review was performed in January 2021, five data bases were searched: Pubmed, MedLine, Lilacs, Scopus, and SciELO. The references of articles included in the review were screened together with the references of other relevant reviews. RESULTS: Nine studies were identified that investigated sexuality and sexual intimacy from the perspective of the couple living with dementia or from the perspective of the spouse. The analysis identified four key themes: addressing dementia and sexuality; challenges to maintaining sexuality within the couple relationship; forms of sexual expression; and the desire to be seen as a sexual being. CONCLUSION: Despite evidence of the importance of sexuality in later life and the positive effects it has on the quality of the couple relationship, research has identified the difficulty of destigmatizing sexuality and older persons, particularly when considering couples affected by dementia. Further research is required to better understand how living with the illness impacts sexual expression and the intimacy of the couple relationship.

ABSTRACT

While much research now demonstrates how social inequalities can drive HIV transmission, relatively little attention is given to the spatialized 'intersections' of race, class, and gender. Using this approach, this article considers an understudied phenomenon in Brazilian HIV discussions, the importance of the drug economy in shaping intimacy in favelas. Drawing on interviews with young women in Rio de Janeiro, it documents the intimate relations between young women and male drug workers to situate HIV vulnerability at the juncture of three social-spatial changes: (1) the rise of a drug economy that provides some racialized men, marginalized from mainstream society, with opportunities for work; (2) the precarious economic position of racialized women; and (3) the gendered dynamics including violence that can shape intimate relations. The paper shows how these relationships are contested by women who can cast their partners as living a 'wrong life.'

ABSTRACT

Intimacy in marital relationships is an aspect belonging to the human life cycle that comprises union and exchange of affection between two people, and its presence in this dyad allows for trust, sharing, revelation of vulnerabilities and reciprocity. The objective of this article was to identify in the literature whether intimacy in couples is understood as a protective factor for health care in patients with chronic diseases. Thus, articles related to the theme were searched in databases, and the studies with samples composed of couples in which one of the partners had a diagnosis of chronic disease were included. From the results, the investigation verified that the presence of intimacy in the dyad, despite the damage caused by the disease and the respective treatments, turns into a space where the patient obtains the experience of comfort, support and security.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The present study is part of a broader investigation of shame and modesty in the intimacy of the family and aims to investigate the perception of modesty in families with adolescent children. Qualitative research was conducted in which eight 8 subjects from the middle socioeconomic segment were interviewed. According to the content analysis method, the results were analyzed, thematic-categorical, and discussed from the theoretical framework of psychoanalysis and social sciences. Considering the objective of the present study, we present and discuss the categories: the strangeness of modesty; transmission of modesty: a legacy in question; new directions of intimacy in the home and image in the public space: protecting the shame of children. The results show that the participants attribute to modesty a meaning of bodily and sexual intimacy transmitted by previous generations and little expression in the current family interaction. We conclude that the generational transmission of modesty has suffered a discontinuity, given the greater affective proximity to the children and their reflexes in the transformation of family intimacy.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Among issues that are elaborated in the public and private dimensions on the internet, from the accessibility of smartphones and the configuration of platforms that are discursive and technologically organized so that users are online and active on the networks, non-consensual exposure of intimate content of girls and women is an increasing problem. In this sense, the article deals with the unauthorized exposure of intimate materials, called in the field of 'explanation', presenting ethnographic data from a Facebook group that develops practices to help girls, usually minors, to protect themselves and fight cases of explanation. We perceive the exercise of an updated form of power over the body and sexuality that is dissociated from the pattern of what is understood as revenge pornography. In this direction, the digital universe works as an extension of everyday life, producing and extending violence against girls and women.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: The Emotional Intimacy Scale (EIE) is a self-report instrument that assesses emotional intimacy in close relationships. The aim of this research was to examine the psychometric properties of the EIE for its use in heterosexual, gay and lesbian people who are currently involved in a couple relationship. The sample consisted of 883 Chileans, (404 men and 479 women; 565 heterosexuals and 318 homosexual), between the ages of 18 and 72. Using a Confirmatory Factor Analysis, the one-dimensional structure of the scale was replicated, achieving a good fit to the data, while the multi-group analysis revealed that the EIE-E (Spanish version) is invariant according to sex and sexual orientation. The internal consistency indices using Cronbach's alpha and McDonald Omega were appropriate, and a positive association was observed between emotional intimacy and relationship satisfaction. Finally, results showed that lesbian women showed higher levels of intimacy relative to the other groups. It is concluded that the EIE-E is an appropriate instrument for the study of emotional intimacy in people who are in a couple relationship, be they heterosexual men or women, gays or lesbians.

ABSTRACT

Postfeminism is a neoliberal sensibility that locates femininity in the body, thereby imploring women to constantly labor on, monitor and discipline their bodies. This aesthetic labor is presented to women as freely chosen and empowering. Brazilian waxing is exemplary aesthetic labor directed at the self. Academic literature on aesthetic labor in general, and Brazilian waxing in particular, looks at white and middle-class women, as this category of women is considered the putative subject of postfeminism. Little attention is paid to racialized women from the global south who perform aesthetic labor on other women's bodies in the global north. In this paper, I draw on my ethnographic study of two beauty salons in London run by South Asian women to argue that these South Asian beauticians are postfeminist subjects as well. The aim of challenging the putative subject of postfeminism, using the example of Brazilian waxing, is not merely to include South Asian women in the discourse, but to advance a transnational theorization of postfeminism. Such theorization, I demonstrate, leads to a better understanding of how postfeminism is implicated in global structures of power as well as the affective qualities of postfeminism including intimacy and disgust.

ABSTRACT

This paper intends to discuss the notion of intimacy presented by Peter Sloterdijk and the effects of digital technology on the interfacial relationship. The objective is to show how the articulation between psychoanalysis and phenomenology presented by the German philosopher contributes to understand clinical and everyday phenomena. Through previous studies and clinical situations, we will show how the substitution of the conjunctive logic to a connective one, as presented by the Italian philosopher Franco Berardi, has generated ties that are not deeply rooted in bodily experiences. Descriptions of temporal and bodily experiences are central to understanding this change that is occurring. In this sense, we conclude that the facilities of the technology can generate a forgetfulness of the interfacial space as a memory and a gateway for the world.

ABSTRACT

The objective was to analyze the damage to the health of women who had intimate images released without authorization, as well as the necessary health care in these situations. The starting point was the debate on violence against women in its interface with Public Health. In-depth interviews were conducted with 17 women aged between 17 and 50 years old, who had intimate images released without authorization; and with ten health and care professionals who attended women in this situation. Several damages to mental health were observed, such as aggravation of eating disorders and alcohol abuse, self-mutilation, development of phobias, depression and attempted self-extermination. The exposure of intimacy has been shown to be a recurrent violence that requires proper care, to be appropriated by the health field in the production of care in order to promote women's comprehensive health. ABSTRACT

Abstract This article analyzes the category "consent" by shifting the debate on sexual rights to lives and intimate relationships. In this scenario of everyday affections, it is possible to glimpse the vicissitudes in which consent is experienced in the midst of the various negotiations of symbolic and moral boundaries. Hence, the efforts to understand the limitations in the interpretation of consent as an exercise in autonomy and reason, lays in the torsions that intimacy imprints on it, enabling other dynamics of consent and highlighting its porose, ambivalent, repetitive character. To this end, we will present three ethnographies that are committed to a phenomenological view of everyday life: trans and transvestite ("travesti") women who seek stable relationships and marriages, 'nervous' mothers and their 'open bodies' in territories of social precariousness, and the complicated negotiations regarding the insertion of a family member convicted of rape.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the possible repercussions of "virtual extimacy" in the experience of conjugality today. The notion of intimacy has undergone significant transformations. Historically, intimacy had a strong connection with the idea of privacy. However, today, the transformation of intimacy is remarkable, since the shared information has reached visibility never before imagined. The notion of "virtual extimacy" was constructed to designate this new perspective of intimacy in the internet space. Six married people who were also users of the Facebook social network were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed using the content analysis method. The categories of analysis emerged from these narratives. With these analyses, it was verified that we are facing not a dichotomous phenomenon that separates the virtual from the real, but rather a novelty that joins and intertwines the threads of experience with the other inside and outside the internet.

ABSTRACT

Social networks have had an impact on the way people interact. For this reason, this study aimed to investigate how young people use media such as Facebook or other social networks to fulfil tasks that are key to the functioning of their relationship, such as setting limits and maintaining the emotional climate. A qualitative descriptive study was carried out, involving in-depth interviews and virtual ethnography. The participants were six pairs of heterosexual university students observed through their conversations on Facebook and WhatsApp for one week. The finding was that young couples use social networks to exchange messages about their daily activities, address each other's emotional needs, and build identity. The results are discussed concerning existing literature and suggested directions for future studies.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Based on textual diaries produced by three women confined at home during the pandemic, this article discusses the subjective and intersubjective dynamics of self-other-world relationships that are part of the intimate experience of home confinement. From a dialogical analysis of the data, three stylistics of the confined intimacy were identified: the drift´s introspection; the performative and the slot subjectivism. These dialogical allegories shed light on: (a) the main impasses in the maintenance of pre-viral lifeforms; (b) the declarative ambiguities and affective ambivalences in the construction of alternatives to the period of confinement in the dynamics being-with-the-others and the-others-in-me; (c) the ways of experiencing time in the reconstruction of the past, in the ways of elaborating futures also through the intensities of the present.
