ABSTRACT

Sleep quality significantly affects the quality of life of older persons. Therefore, this study explored the relationship between sleep quality and living environment of older persons in China to provide a theoretical basis for therapies to alleviate sleep disorders in older persons. A total of 6211 subjects > 60 years of age in Anhui Province, China, were evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and a self-reported questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that living alone (OR = 1.26, 95% CI 1.09-1.46) and living in a rural area (OR = 1.19, 95% CI 1.06-1.34) were significantly associated with a high incidence of sleep disorders in older persons. Living near a park or foot paths suitable for exercise or walking was significantly associated with a lower incidence of sleep disorders in older persons (OR = 0.87, 95% CI 0.77-0.96). Individual factors such as female sex (OR = 1.30, 95% CI 1.14-1.48) and depression (OR = 2.80, 95% CI 2.47-3.19) were also associated with sleep quality in older persons. These data indicate a correlation exists between living environment and sleep quality.

ABSTRACT

Radon, a radioactive inert gas that comes from the decay of naturally occurring radioactive species, poses a substantial health risk due to its involvement in lung cancer carcinogenesis. This work proposes a metrological approach for determining radon exhalation rates from diverse building materials. This methodology employs an electrostatic collection chamber for alpha spectrometry of radon isotopic decay products. Experimental evaluations were conducted particularly focusing on volcanic gray tuff from Sant'Agata de' Goti (Campania region, Italy), a material commonly utilized in construction, to assess radon exhalation rates. The study aligns with Legislative Decree 101/2020, a transposition of European Directive 59/2013/Euratom, highlighting the need to identify materials with a high risk of radon exhalation. Moreover, this work supports the goals of the Italian National Radon Action Plan related to the aforementioned decree, aiming to develop methodologies for estimating radon exhalation rates from building materials and improving radioprotection practices.

ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: Technology has potential for providing support for aging adults. This study evaluated the Personal Reminder Information and Social Management 2.0 (PRISM 2.0) software, in terms of enhancing social engagement and quality of life, and decreasing loneliness among older adults. Research Design and Methods: The randomized field trial conducted in diverse living contexts (rural locations, senior housing, and assisted living communities [ALC]). Two hundred and forty-five adults, aged 64 to 99 years, were randomly assigned to the PRISM 2.0 (integrated software system designed for aging through an iterative design process) or a Standard Tablet (without PRISM) Control condition, where participants received the same amount of contact and training as those in the PRISM 2.0 condition. Primary outcomes included measures of loneliness, social support, social connectedness, and quality of life. Secondary outcomes included measures of social isolation, mobile device proficiency, and technology readiness. Data were collected at baseline and 6 and 9 months postrandomization. This article focuses on the 6-month outcomes due to coronavirus disease 2019-related data challenges at 9 months. Results: Contrary to our hypothesis, participants in rural locations and senior housing in both conditions reported less loneliness and social isolation, and greater social support and quality of life at 6 months, and an increase in mobile device proficiency. Participants in the ALCs in both conditions also evidenced an increase in mobile device proficiency. Improvements in quality of life and health-related quality of life were associated with decreases in loneliness. Discussion and Implications: This study provides compelling evidence about the benefits of technology for older adults in terms of enhancing social outcomes and quality of life. However, the findings also underscore that for technology applications to be successful, they need to be adapted to the abilities and needs of the user group and instructional support needs to be provided. Objective.Assessing signal quality is crucial for biomedical signal processing, yet a precise mathematical model for defining signal quality is often lacking, posing challenges for experts in labeling signal qualities. The situation is even worse in the free living environment.Approach.We propose to model a PPG signal by the adaptive non-harmonic model (ANHM) and apply a decomposition algorithm to explore its structure, based on which we advocate a reconsideration of the concept of signal quality.Main results.We demonstrate the necessity of this reconsideration and highlight the relationship between signal quality and signal decomposition with examples recorded from the free living environment. We also demonstrate that relying on mean and instantaneous heart rates derived from PPG signals labeled as high quality by experts without proper reconsideration might be problematic.Significance.A new method, distinct from visually inspecting the raw PPG signal to assess its quality, is needed. Our proposed ANHM model, combined with advanced signal processing tools, shows potential for establishing a systematic signal decomposition based signal quality assessment model.

ABSTRACT

Green space exposure provides greater beneficial effects on residents compared to unnatural spaces, commonly referred to as "gray spaces". However, during rapid urbanization, gray spaces expand more quickly than green spaces, often encroaching upon and overtaking these natural environments. This unchecked growth leads to detrimental impacts on the human habitat and overall environmental quality. Consequently, it is essential to meticulously assess the spatial and temporal patterns of residents' exposure levels, as well as to thoroughly investigate the underlying driving mechanisms behind these changes. This study used population-weighted exposure level measurements to assess gray and green space exposure in Chinese cities in the early 21st Century (2000-2019). Additionally, the Gray-Green space Exposure Ratio (GER) was calculated, and the spatiotemporal driving mechanism of GER by each factor was analyzed by geostatistical modeling. The results show that gray space exposure is generally increasing in China, especially in eastern parts of China. The probability of exposure to gray spaces exceeds that of green spaces in some high urbanization rate cities. This trend will continue, albeit at a slower rate. Urban sprawl, built-up area density, and increased electricity consumption were the main drivers of rising GER, whereas greenspace integrity contributed to lower GER; the driving mechanisms for GER changes were spatiotemporal heterogeneous. This study provides a reliable reference for restoring the green space exposure to promote the living environment constructing and residents' access to nature.

ABSTRACT

The necessity for global engineering and technological solutions to address rural environmental challenges is paramount, particularly in improving rural waste treatment and infrastructure. This study presents a comprehensive quantitative analysis of 3901 SCI/SSCI and 3818 Chinese CSCD papers, spanning from 1989 to 2021, using tools like Derwent Data Analyzer and VOSviewer. Our key findings reveal a significant evolution in research focus, including a 716.67% increase in global publications from 1995 to 2008 and a 154.76% surge from 2015 to 2021, highlighting a growing research interest with technological hotspots in rural revitalization engineering and agricultural waste recycling. China and the USA are pivotal, contributing 784 and 714 publications respectively. Prominent institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences play a crucial role, particularly in fecal waste treatment technology. These insights advocate for enhanced policy development and practical implementations to foster inclusive and sustainable rural environments globally.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study investigates the relationship of living environment factors with satisfaction, work engagement, perceived productivity, and stress among teleworkers. Background: Given the increase in telecommuting since the onset of the pandemic, the study aims to identify how to create an optimum environment for telecommuting workers. Methods: By examining the relationships among these factors via multiple regression analysis, a comprehensive investigation of the telecommuting working environment is conducted, encompassing physical aspects and facilities as well as lifestyle rhythms and relationships with housemates. In doing so, the author identifies measures to create a more favorable living environment. The work environment of remote workers is examined from various perspectives using the framework of the SHEL model: Software (work content, lifestyle, etc.), Hardware (furniture, equipment, etc.), Environment (indoor environment), and Liveware (relationships with family members who reside with the worker). Results: The results suggest that positive factors, such as satisfaction and work engagement, are strongly influenced by the degree of job autonomy and the availability of a workspace dedicated to personal use. Negative aspects, such as stress, are significantly impacted by environmental noise, interruptions due to household tasks, and the use of ergonomic furniture.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: With the increase of urban population density, urban sanitation becomes more severe; urban sanitation has important influence on public health. Therefore, in order to realize the detection of public health in smart cities, the research will use cutting-edge scientific and technological methods to improve urban environmental health, so as to promote the realization of public health achievements. This study introduces public health detection and optimizationtechnologies for smart cities. Methods: Firstly, a data detection system for urban public health environment was established using sensors and intelligent multi-objective technology to evaluate the water quality, air quality, and noise level of the city. Then, an intelligent garbage management system based on Tensor-flow was constructed to achieve efficient garbage collection and treatment. Finally, an intelligent traffic management system was developed to monitor and regulate urban traffic flow. Results: The results of the simulation experiment demonstrated that the life data detection system was operationally stable, with a high success rate of 98%. Furthermore, its accuracy in detecting residents' living environment data was above 95%, the maximum relative error was only 0.0465, making it a reliable and efficient tool. The waste recycling system achieved a minimum accuracy of 83.6%, the highest accuracy rate was 95.3%, making it capable of sorting and recycling urban waste effectively. Additionally, the smart traffic management system led to a 20% reduction in traffic congestion rates, 20 tonnes less tailpipe emissions and an improvement in public health and well-being. Discussion: In summary, the plan proposed in this study aims to create a more comfortable, safe, and healthy urban public health environment, while providing theoretical support for environmental health management in smart cities.

ABSTRACT

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis is an allergic disease caused by various factors such as animal proteins and chemicals. The masked musang, a small animal of the Viverridae family native to East Asia, tends to infiltrate spaces like the attics of residences, causing damage through the deposition of excrement and other means. The older Japanese patient had been experiencing cough, shortness of breath, and fever for two months before presenting to our hospital. The symptoms improved upon admission to a local medical facility but deteriorated upon discharge. This cycle was repeated twice before the patient was admitted to our hospital. Based on the recurrent pattern of improvement during hospitalization and exacerbation upon returning home, along with the results of CT imaging and bronchoscopy, we suspected hypersensitivity pneumonitis. An environmental investigation at the patient's residence revealed a masked musang nest in the attic above the patient's room. After cleaning the attic, the symptoms did not recur. Consequently, we diagnosed hypersensitivity pneumonitis due to living environmental pollution caused by masked musangs. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no previous case reports of hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by masked musangs. When wild animals invade human living environments, there is a possibility that not only infectious diseases but also immunological disorders, including allergic diseases, may appear.

ABSTRACT

The integration of alternative data extraction approaches for multimodal data, can significantly reduce modeling difficulties for the automatic location assessment. We develop a method for assessing the quality of the immediate living environment by incorporating human judgments as ground truth into a neural network for generating new synthetic data and testing the effects in surrogate hedonic models. We expect that the quality of the data will be less biased if the annotation is performed by multiple independent persons applying repeated trials which should reduce the overall error variance and lead to more robust results. Experimental results show that linking repeated subjective judgements and Deep Learning can reliably determine the quality scores and thus expand the range of information for the quality assessment. The presented method is not computationally intensive, can be performed repetitively and can also be easily adapted to machine learning approaches in a broader sense or be transferred to other use cases. Following aspects are essential for the implementation of the method:•Sufficient amount of representative data for human assessment.•Repeated assessment trials by individuals.•Confident derivation of the effect of human judgments on property price as an approbation for further generation of synthetic data.

INTRODUCTION: The nutritional status of children with neurological impairment affects their health and quality of life. Bulgaria has many abandoned disabled children in residential homes. Lack of parental care puts them at risk for poor growth, suboptimal nutrition, and physical and mental development. Our study aims to identify factors associated with poor nutrition in Bulgarian children with neurological impairment living in different environments. METHODS: From January to December 2017, a cross-sectional study was conducted in northeastern Bulgaria. We recruited 109 residential and nonresidential children. The study included demographics, medical history, anthropometric measurements, biochemical tests, nutritional assessment, and gastrointestinal signs and symptoms. Data were analyzed with Jamovi 2.2.5 at a 0.05 significance level. Logistic regression was used to predict wasting in both environmental settings. RESULTS: About 70% of the neurologically impaired children living in residential settings have malnutrition based on weight-for-age Z-score, compared to 25% of the non-residential children. Prematurity, low gross motor function (as measured by the gross motor function classification system), pureed food consumption, birth before 37 weeks, and living in residential care homes are linked to poor nutrition. CONCLUSION: Neurologically impaired children have a poor nutritional state, especially those living in residential homes. The study underscores the pressing need for the allocation of additional nutrition resources to effectively address the nutritional and developmental needs of children with neurological disabilities in Bulgaria.

ABSTRACT

Background: Dermatophagoides farinae (DFA) is an important species of house dust mites (HDMs) that causes allergic diseases. Previous studies have focused on allergens with protein components to explain the allergic effect of HDMs; however, there is little knowledge on the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in the allergic effect of HDMs. This study aimed to unravel the new mechanism of dust mite sensitization from the perspective of cross-species transport of extracellular vesicles-encapsulated miRNAs from HDMs. Methods: Small RNA (sRNA) sequencing was performed to detect miRNAs expression profiles from DFA, DFA-derived exosomes and DFA culture supernatants. A quantitative fluorescent real-time PCR (qPCR) assay was used to detect miRNAs expression in dust specimens. BEAS-2B cells endocytosed exosomes were modeled in vitro to detect miRNAs from DFA and the expression of related inflammatory factors. Representative dfa-miR-276-3p and dfa-novel-miR2 were transfected into BEAS-2B cells, and then differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were analyzed by RNA sequencing. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway and Gene Ontology (GO) terms enrichment analyses were performed on the first 300 nodes of DEGs. Results: sRNA sequencing identified 42 conserved miRNAs and 66 novel miRNAs in DFA, DFA-derived exosomes, and DFA culture supernatants. A homology analysis was performed on the top 18 conserved miRNAs with high expression levels. The presence of dust mites and miRNAs from HDMs in living environment were also validated. Following uptake of DFA-derived exosomes by BEAS-2B cells, exosomes transported miRNAs from DFA to target cells and produced pro-inflammatory effects in corresponding cells. RNA sequencing identified DEGs in dfa-miR-276-3p and dfa-novel-miR2 transfected BEAS-2B cells. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses revealed the role of exosomes with cross-species transporting of DFA miRNAs in inflammatory signaling pathways, such as JAK-STAT signaling pathway, PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and IL-6-mediated signaling pathway. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate the miRNAs expression profiles in DFA for the first time. The DFA miRNAs are delivered into living environments via exosomes, and engulfed by human bronchial epithelial cells, and cross-species regulation may contribute to inflammation-related processes.

Background: Prenatal exposure to trace metals can have adverse effects on health and increase the risk of developing certain diseases. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of giving women advice to reduce their exposure to trace metals during pregnancy or prior to conception. The study also examined differences in exposure between rural and urban environments in southern France. Methods: In this prospective study, pregnant women or those intending to conceive were recruited from two medical centers for gynecology/obstetrics (rural location: Saint-Rémy-de-Provence; urban location: Marseille). Hair samples were collected and analyzed to determine the levels of exposure to trace metals. Participants with 'risky' levels were given corresponding advice sheets on how to reduce their exposure or, for certain metals, they were encouraged to find out about potential sources of exposure. A second hair sample was collected and analyzed 3 months later. Results: It was found that 109 women had 'risky' levels of exposure to trace metals, out of a total of 184 women (59.2 %). Cerium was the most frequently identified metal (N = 26), followed by nickel (N = 23), and titanium (N = 19). There were more women at the urban center with 'risky' levels (56/86; 65.1 %) than at the rural center (53/98; 54.1 %), but this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.13). Advice sheets were given to 64 of the 109 participants with 'risky' levels (58.7 %), but only 21 returned for the second hair analysis. Of these, 14 were found to have reduced their exposure, which corresponds to just 12.8 % (14/109) of the participants with 'risky' levels. Conclusions: These results indicate that it would be helpful to develop new interventions to reduce trace metal exposure during or prior to pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Companion animals can contribute to the physical and mental health of people and often live in very close association with their owners. However, the antibiotic resistome carried by companion animals and the impact they have on their owners and living environment remain unclear. In this study, we compared the ARG profiles of cats, humans, and their living environments using metagenomic analysis to identify the core ARGs in the cat and human gut and explore the potential impact of cats on ARGs in the human gut through the environment. RESULTS: Results showed that the abundance of ARGs in the cat gut was significantly higher than that in the human gut (P < 0.0001), with aminoglycoside and tetracycline resistance genes being the dominant ARGs in the cat gut. There was no significant difference in the abundance of total ARGs in the guts of cat owners and non-owners (P > 0.05). However, the abundance of aminoglycoside resistance genes including APH(2'')-IIa and AAC(6')-Im was significantly higher in cat owners than that in non-cat owners (P < 0.001). Also, ARG abundance was positively correlated with the frequency of cat activity in the living environment. Enterobacteriaceae was the dominant ARG host co-occurring in the cat gut, human gut, and living environment. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that cats may shape the living environment resistome and thus the composition of some ARGs in the human gut, highlighting the importance of companion animal environment health. ABSTRACT

Background: The association between combined environmental factors and the risk of arthritis is still scarcely studied. The present study performed cross-sectional and cohort studies to explore the association between risk score of living environment quality and the risk of arthritis in middle-aged and older adults in China. Methods: The study was based on China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), and it recruited 17,218 participants in the cross-sectional study and 11,242 participants in the seven-year follow-up study. The living environment quality was measured by household fuel types, household water sources, room temperature, residence types, and ambient concentration of PM2.5. Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard regression models were utilized to examine the association between the living environment quality and the risk of arthritis. Competing risk models and stratified analyses were applied to further verify our results. Results: Compared with individuals in the suitable environment group, people who lived in moderate (OR:1.28, 95%CI: 1.14-1.43) and unfavorable environments (OR:1.49, 95%CI:1.31-1.70) showed higher risks of arthritis when considering the multiple living environmental factors (P for trend <0.001) in the cross-sectional analysis. In the follow-up study, similar results (P for trend = 0.021), moderate environment group (HR:1.26, 95%CI:1.01-1.56) and unfavorable environment group (HR: 1.36, 95%CI: 1.07-1.74), were founded. Conclusion: Inferior living environment might promote the development of arthritis. It is necessary for the public, especially old people, to improve the living environment, which may be the key to the primary prevention of arthritis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Alternative forms of housing for persons with dementia have been developed in recent decades. These concepts offer small groups of residents familiar settings combined with efforts to provide normal daily life. The aim of this systematic review is to collate and analyze these more innovative forms of housing regarding residents' quality of life, behavioral aspects, as well as functional, cognitive and emotional aspects. METHODS: Searches were conducted in PubMed, EMBASE and PsycInfo in November 2020. Studies comparing traditional and more innovative living environments for persons with dementia were eligible. Concepts are described based on the results of additional searches. Risk of bias of included studies was assessed using checklists from the Joanna Briggs Institute. RESULTS: A total of 21 studies corresponding to 11 different concepts were included, namely Green Houses (USA), Group Living (Sweden), Cantou (France), Group Homes (Japan), Small-scale Group Living (Austria), Special Care Facilities (Canada), Shared-housing Arrangements (Germany), Residential Groups (Germany), Residential Care Centers / Woodside Places (USA/Canada), Small-scale Living (Netherlands/ Belgium), and Green Care Farms (Netherlands). The concepts are broadly similar in terms of care concepts, but partly differ in group sizes, staff qualifications and responsibilities. Several studies indicate that innovative forms of housing may encourage social behavior, preserve activity performance and/or positively influence emotional status compared to more traditional settings, while other studies fail to demonstrate these effects. Some studies also show increased behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in residents who live in more innovative housing concepts. The effect on cognition remains indistinct. DISCUSSION: The positive effects may be attributable to the inherent characteristics, including small group sizes, a stimulating design, and altered staff roles and responsibilities. Arguably, some of these characteristics might also be the reason for increased BPSD. Studies had variable methodological quality and results have to be considered with caution. Future research should examine these effects more closely and should investigate populations' preferences with regards to housing in the event of dementia.

ABSTRACT

The objective of our study was to assess the impact of regional living conditions on the Russian population's mental health. For the analysis, we used data from the cross-sectional stage of a 2013-2014 study, "Epidemiology of Cardiovascular Diseases in the Regions of the Russian Federation (ESSE-RF)". The final sample included 18,021 men and women 25-64 years of age from 11 regions of Russia. Using principal component analysis, we performed an integral simultaneous assessment of stress, anxiety, and depression. To describe the regional living conditions, we utilized five regional indices, which were computed from publicly available data of the Federal State Statistics Service of Russia. Overall, mental health indicators were improved, on the one hand, with the deterioration of social conditions and an aggravation of the demographic depression in the region, but on the other hand, they were improved with an increase in economic and industrial development, along with economic inequality among the population. In addition, the impact of regional living conditions on mental health increased with a higher individual wealth. The obtained results provided new fundamental knowledge on the impact of the living environment on health, using the case study of the Russian population, which has been little studied in this regard.

ABSTRACT

Cognitive impairment contributes to functional impairment in schizophrenia. Yet, little is known about how environmental characteristics are related to cognition in schizophrenia. By examining how cognition and the environment are intertwined, it may be possible to identify modifiable risk and protective factors that can improve cognitive outcomes in schizophrenia. We aimed to identify multivariate associations between cognition and three geospatial characteristics (built-space density, habitable green spaces, and public spaces for social interaction) within one's immediate neighborhood among individuals with schizophrenia. We recruited participants with schizophrenia from three sites - an urban metropolitan and two towns in southern India. We administered standard cognitive assessments and performed a principal axis factoring to identify episodic memory, cognitive control, and social inference-making factors for use in further analyses. We estimated geospatial characteristics of an individual's neighborhood, i.e., up to 1 km2 around the residence, by sourcing data from Google Earth. We performed unconditional and conditional (to examine the effect of clinical covariates) canonical correlation analyses to understand the multivariate relationship between cognition and geospatial characteristics. We analyzed data from 208 participants; the first canonical cognitive variate (higher social inference-making and poorer cognitive control) shared 24% of the variance (r = 0.49; P < 0.001) with the first geospatial variate (lower built density and poorer access to public spaces). Years of education, age at onset, and place of residence significantly modulated this relationship. We observe differential associations of the built environment with social and non-social cognition in schizophrenia, and highlight the clinical and demographic characteristics that shape these associations.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Older Chinese immigrants are at risk for depression due to acculturative stress and language barriers. Residential segregation with respect to language use plays an important role in the mental health of historically marginalized populations. Previous research provided mixed evidence about the segregation effect among older Latino and Asian immigrants. Guided by a model of social processes, we examined the direct and indirect effects of residential segregation on depressive symptoms via multiple mechanisms of acculturation, discrimination, social network, social support, social strain, and social engagement. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Four waves of depressive symptoms were assessed in the Population Study of Chinese Elderly (2011-19, N = 1,970), and linked to the 2010-14 American Community Survey estimates of neighborhood context. Residential segregation was measured by the Index of Concentrations at the Extremes which simultaneously assesses Chinese and English language use within a given census tract. Latent growth curve models with adjusted cluster robust standard errors were estimated after controlling for individual-level factors. RESULTS: Residents of segregated Chinese-speaking neighborhoods had fewer baseline depressive symptoms but a slower rate of symptom reduction than those living in neighborhoods segregated with English-only speakers. Racial discrimination, social strain, and social engagement partially mediated the association between segregation and baseline depressive symptoms; social strain and social engagement partially mediated the association with long-term reduction in depressive symptoms. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: This study demonstrates the importance of residential segregation and social processes in shaping mental well-being among older Chinese immigrants and suggests potential mechanisms to alleviate mental health risks.
