ABSTRACT

Spatio-temporal responses of the intertidal macrobenthic community to the effects of a submarine outfall (SO) and a new sewage treatment plant (EDAR) were evaluated, analyzing changes in macrofaunal assemblages and community structure. Study was conducted in a SW Atlantic coastal area in 4 stages: BSO (Before the SO), Du (During the construction of the SO), ASO (After the SO start-up) and AEDAR (After the treatment plant start-up). Boccardia proboscidea and Brachidontes rodriguezii contributed most to the differences between all stages at the site nearest to the discharge point. Number of individuals was highest at BSO and Du. Richness and diversity were lowest at the BSO and highest at the Du. Furthermore, the richness decreased slightly, and the diversity increased at AEDAR. Evenness was highest at the BSO and AEDAR. The nestedness was the dominant process driving the differences between the BSO stage community and the rest of the stages. SO affects the composition and structure of the intertidal macrobenthic community near the outfall area, as organic matter discharge further offshore favour the development of a more diverse intertidal community, including species sensitive to organic enrichment.

ABSTRACT

Macrobenthic organisms are useful bioindicators to assess ecological quality status. On the south-central coast of Peru (13°15.15'S, 76°18.5'W), a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) marine terminal has been operating since 2010. We investigated the macrobenthic communities and sediment parameters from 2011 to 2020 to evaluate the ecological quality status in the surrounding area of the marine terminal, using the AZTI Marine Biotic Index (AMBI) and its multivariate version (M-AMBI). We analyzed the diversity and community composition of macrobenthic invertebrates and the physico-chemical parameters of the sediment from 29 sampling sites, ranging from 0 to 15m depth. The sampling design considered: the direct influence zone ("DIZ", surroundings of the marine terminal), and northern (NCZ) and southern (SCZ) control zones. Our results indicated that abundance was high at SCZ and decreased with depth. Species richness and diversity were high at DIZ and NCZ, respectively, and increased up to 10m but dropped at 15m. High sand content was recorded in shallow depths, while in deeper areas and DIZ, mud and organic matter increased and redox potential was negative. AMBI indicated a "slightly disturbed" status in general, while M-AMBI indicated "good" or "moderate" status at depths ≤ 12m, and "poor" status at 15m. Overall, the season/year factor was not important, and variables were mostly significantly different across depths. Redox potential and organic matter were correlated with M-AMBI at 15m. In general, our results indicate an acceptable ecological quality surrounding the marine terminal, likely because the study area is not influenced by an important input of an anthropogenic stressor. This study highlights the importance of monitoring benthic communities in the surroundings of human-made structures and the use of ecological quality indices for understanding potential impacts.

Abstract Spatial and temporal distribution of two species of adult´s ostracods (Cyprideis sp. and Cyprideis salebrosa) were studied as a function of the rainfall patterns in the Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Samples were taken in ten stations, along six surveys representing three periods (Dry, Early and Late Rainy) for two years. Stations were nested in four areas (Outer, Central, EPA Guapimirim and Impacted). The bottom water (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and oxygen saturation) were measured in each area to characterize the influence of seasonal variations by rainfall. Cyprideis sp. and Cyprideis salebrosa showed patterns distribution to seasonality/surveys (p = 0,002 and p <0,001, respectly). The spatial distribution of Cyprideis sp was significantly different areas studied (p <0.001) indicated well defined areas and distribution in along of the surveys. However, C. salebrosa showed homogeneous distribution in along of the areas within of each survey (p <0.001). Redundancy Analysis (RDA) for the two years evidenced environment preference of the Cyprideis sp. for areas with marine conditions (high influence for channel central) and C. salebrosa for brackish water (high influence of the rivers). This observation reinforces of the existence of areas created by the seasonality of pluviometric regime, a possible dispersion of the adult's ostracods and possibility the use with bioindicators.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The Río Lagartos lagoon, located in the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, Yucatán, Gulf of Mexico, is a coastal hypersaline system ca. 80 km long (east-west). It comprises three basins: western (close to Río Lagartos fishermen village), middle (Las Coloradas) and eastern (close to El Cuyo fishermen village), that communicate through very narrow natural channels. Despite several studies have been performed on the vertebrate fauna, the aquatic invertebrates, and especially polychaetes, remain largely unknown. Objective: The objective of this study is to describe the composition and distribution of the benthic polychaete community, and to analyse potential environmental drivers. Methods: The biological material was collected in 16 stations distributed along the lagoon during the rainy season (September 2017). Two replicates per station were obtained using a Ponar standard dredge or cores (6" diameter). Environmental variables such as grain size, organic carbon content in the sediments, and salinity, among others, were measured. Results: A total of 827 specimens belonging to 26 species and 16 families were identified. Of these, 23 species are new records for the Río Lagartos lagoon. Community composition changed between the different basins associated with strong gradients in salinity, subaquatic vegetation (algae and seagrasses) proportions in the samples and grain size. No polychaetes were recorded at the easternmost basin (El Cuyo basin), where salinity was between 67-80 psu. In the rest of the lagoon, the distribution of polychaetes was heterogeneous, especially near the mouth (western basin), where the highest and lowest density, species richness and diversity were recorded. The highest density was found at station 6, where dense algal mats of the genus Avrainvillea dominated. The families Syllidae and Nereididae were the most abundant and widely distributed families in the lagoon. The species Syllis lagunae and Nereis pelagica dominated the western basin and Prionospio heterobranchia and Sphaerosyllis taylori dominated the middle basin. Conclusions: The salinity records associated with some species were well above the top limits previously reported, establishing the euryhaline character of many species in the region.


Introducción: La laguna Río Lagartos, ubicada en la Reserva de la Biosfera Ría Lagartos, Yucatán, Golfo de México, es un sistema costero hipersalino con una longitud aproximada de 80 km (este-oeste). La laguna está conformada por tres cuencas (Río Lagartos, Las Coloradas y El Cuyo) comunicadas entre sí por canales naturales extremadamente estrechos. Aunque existen varios estudios sobre la fauna vertebrada asociada a la laguna, los invertebrados acuáticos, y especialmente la poliquetofauna, son todavía desconocidos. Objetivo: El objetivo de este estudio es analizar la composición y distribución de los poliquetos bentónicos, y su relación con las condiciones ambientales. Metodología: El material biológico fue recolectado en 16 estaciones a lo largo del sistema lagunar durante la época climática de "lluvias" (septiembre 2017). Se tomaron dos réplicas por estación con una draga Ponar standard o un nucleador de PVC (diámetro= 6"). En cada estación se midieron distintas variables ambientales p. ej., granulometría, carbono orgánico en sedimento, salinidad, entre otras. Resultados: Se identificaron 827 ejemplares pertenecientes a 26 especies y 16 familias. De éstas, 23 especies son nuevos registros para la laguna Río Lagartos. La composición de la comunidad varió entre las distintas cuencas de la laguna en relación con importantes gradientes de salinidad, de la proporción de vegetación (algas y pastos) en la muestra y del tamaño de grano. En la cuenca este, El Cuyo, donde el rango de salinidad fue 67-80 ups, no se encontraron poliquetos. En el resto de la laguna, la distribución de los poliquetos fue heterogénea, especialmente cerca de la boca (cuenca de Río Lagartos), donde se registraron los valores más altos y más bajos de densidad, riqueza específica y diversidad. La densidad más alta se registró en la estación 6, donde la muestra estuvo dominada por densos lechos de algas del género Avrainvillea. Las familias Syllidae y Nereididae fueron las más abundantes y ampliamente distribuidas en la laguna. Las especies Syllis lagunae y Nereis pelagica dominaron en la cuenca de Río Lagartos y Prionospio heterobranchia y Sphaerosyllis taylori, en Las Coloradas. Conclusiones: Los rangos de salinidad reportados para algunas de las especies fueron mucho más altos que registros anteriores, estableciendo el carácter eurihalino de varias especies en la región.

ABSTRACT

Water and sediment quality, macrobenthos diversity and mercury levels were assessed in the Salado Estuary, Gulf of Guayaquil (Ecuador) during 2008, 2009 and 2014. Severe hypoxia, anoxia and large fluctuations of salinity occurred in an impacted sector within Guayaquil city relative to a mangrove area within the Salado Mangroves Faunal Production Reserve. Significant inter-site and temporal differences were observed for dissolved oxygen, salinity, total dissolved solids, percentage of silts and clays, and species diversity. Macrobenthos' species richness for both sectors was greater during 2008. Sediments revealed high concentrations of total mercury (THg) (1.20-2.76 mg kg-1 dw), exceeding Ecuador's SQG (0.1 mg kg-1 dw). Sediment THg were significantly lower in 2014 than 2008/09. Biota sediment sccumulation factor values for mussels (3.0 to 34), indicate high bioaccumulation potential from mercury-contaminated sediments. This work highlights the need to develop stronger environmental policies to protect the Salado Estuary from anthropogenic stressors.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: A total of 162 species and subspecies of marine macroinvertebrates were recorded in the submerged soft and hard substrates around the PERU LNG marine terminal and surrounding area, in the central coast of Peru, 167 km south of Lima, Peru. The collection of specimens was carried out from June 2011 to June 2015 as part of the research studies conducted by the Biodiversity Monitoring and Assessment Program (BMAP) around the marine terminal. The area is part of the Humboldt Current Large Marine Ecosystem, one of the most important upwelling systems in the world. NEW INFORMATION: We identified specimens belonging to 83 families and seven phyla. The list was assembled from the taxonomic identifications made by the BMAP. We identified species and subspecies belonging to phyla Annelida, Arthropoda, Brachiopoda, Cnidaria, Echinodermata, Bryozoa and Mollusca. Phyla Annelida (60 spp.), Arthropoda (47 spp.)and Mollusca (45 spp.) exhibited the largest number of species.

ABSTRACT

A sediment quality assessment was performed near to the main industrial source of metal contamination in Sepetiba Bay, Brazil, which represents one of the worst cases of trace metal contamination reported for coastal areas. Acute and chronic toxicity tests, benthic fauna community analysis and metal bioavailability evaluations were applied to identify risks to the benthic community. Significant amphipod mortality was observed close to the major pollution source and lower copepod fertility was observed for all stations. Equilibrium-partitioning and biotic-ligand models to predict pore water metal toxicity, which were based on acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) and organic carbon fraction (fOC) normalization approaches, suggested that metals are not likely to be available in sediment pore water. However, Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations were mainly (>50%) weakly bound to sediments, suggesting high potential bioavailability. Linking the chemical results with ecotoxicological responses, we observed that sediment-feeding organisms presented acute and chronic toxicities that were positively correlated to the metal concentrations in the sediments. Additionally, benthic fauna composition was dominated by tolerant species, revealing a trophic structure response to environmental contamination. These results reinforce the necessity of a multiple lines of evidence approach to establish sediment quality and to support environmental management decisions that are based on observed effects and potential extrapolation scenarios into the future.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated pollution levels in water and sediments of Península de Paraguaná and related these levels with benthic macrofauna along a coastal area where the largest Venezuelan oil refineries have operated over the past 60 years. For this, the concentration of heavy metals, of hydrocarbon compounds and the community structure of the macrobenthos were examined at 20 sites distributed along 40 km of coastline for six consecutive years, which included windy and calm seasons. The spatial variability of organic and inorganic compounds showed considerably high coastal pollution along the study area, across both years and seasons. The southern sites, closest to the refineries, had consistently higher concentrations of heavy metals and organic compounds in water and sediments when compared to those in the north. The benthic community was dominated by polychaetes at all sites, seasons and years, and their abundance and distribution were significantly correlated with physical and chemical characteristics of the sediments. Sites close to the oil refineries were consistently dominated by families known to tolerate xenobiotics, such as Capitellidae and Spionidae. The results from this study highlight the importance of continuing long-term environmental monitoring programs to assess the impact of effluent discharge and spill events from the oil refineries that operate in the western coast of Paraguaná, Venezuela.

ABSTRACT

A field experiment to assess the effects of continuous nutrient addition on the macrobenthic community was carried out on an estuarine mudflat on the northeast coast of Brazil. The experiment began on 5 October 2005 and ended on 8 February 2006. Macrofauna was compared at approximately four-week intervals in triplicate plots with three levels (Control - C, Low Dose - LD and High Dose - HD) of weekly fertilizer additions for 17 weeks. Inorganic fertilizer (N-P-K) was applied on nine randomly defined quadrangular plots (4m(2) each). All measurements were calculated from species abundances. Multivariate analyses as well as the univariate indices (richness, abundance and Shannon-Wiener index) showed statistically significant differences between the enriched and control areas during the period of the experiment. The expected gradual response based on the succession model of Pearson and Rosenberg was not observed. The nutrient doses used were high enough to cause severe decreases in abundance, richness and evenness, and an increase in dominance.

In the present study we analyzed variations in the abundance of P. armatus adults and larvae over an annual cycle in the Marapanim estuary of the Amazon coastal zone, in the northeastern portion of the state of Pará, Brazil. Particularly, we focused on the presence of ovigerous females and timing of larval release, with the aim of elucidating reproductive patterns in a tropical estuarine system. The mean density of P. armatus larvae (zoea I and II) correlated positively with the salinity of the shallow waters of the estuary, whereas the abundance of adults correlated with the salinity registered in water samples collected from the benthic environment. There was also a significant positive correlation between larval density (zoea I and II) and water temperature. Ovigerous females were captured throughout the study period, from August 2006 to July 2007, but were more abundant in June and less abundant during the rainy months, between February and May. Larvae were only present during the dry season and transition months (June to January), and were absent during the rainy season (February to May). Petrolisthes armatus reproduces throughout the year in the Marapanim estuary and all developmental stages of this species (zoeal stages I and II, megalopae and adults) are found in the estuary. The results indicate that the study area is an important environment for the reproduction of this decapod.

This study aimed to investigate the population structure of Sinelobus stanfordi (Richardson, 1901) (Malacostraca, Tanaidae) in a coastal lagoon in the North coast in the Rio Grande do Sul state. The collections were performed weekly on banks of the aquatic hyacinth Eichhornia azurea (Sw.) Kunth during three months. Samples of water hyacinth were manually collected and washed on a sieve of 0.250μm mesh size. In the laboratory, the material was sorted and the tanaid lengths were measured and classified into following morphotype categories: Manca, Juveniles, Non- Reproductive Females (NRF), Preparatory Females (PREPF), Ovigerous Females (OVF) and Males. The distribution by frequency of body length classes presented a higher abundance of manca in the class of 0.75mm; juveniles in 2.19mm; non-reproductive females in 2.5mm; preparatory females in 2.7mm; ovigerous females in 2.85mm and males in 2.81mm. The average of sexual rate was 3.1:1 (females: males). It was observed the recruitment and predominance of juveniles in the eleven studied weeks, and the presence in lower proportion of PREPF, OVF and males. Based on the analyses of the population structure observed and data found in the literature, became evident the presence of juveniles, females and males during all the year, beyond a continuous reproduction activity of the species. The results have also suggested the species seems to have an opportunistic behavior, being able to colonize a high diversity of substrates.

We examined aspects of the population ecology of the gastropod Stramonita haemastoma at Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil. We collected monthly from October 2007 through September 2008 on a sandstone bank 1.5 km long, on which two points and two sampling levels were defined. We took five previously randomised replicates at each level, using a square enclosing an area of 0.0625 m². The snails were photographed, counted, and measured at the site. Both recruits and other individuals in the population preferentially inhabit the regions closer to the lower shore, where they are submerged for longer periods and are less subject to physiological stresses caused by temperature variation and desiccation. The cracks and holes in the bank serve as refuges and places for S. haemastoma to lay their egg capsules. Recruits were observed throughout the study period, and the population showed continuous reproduction.


Neste estudo objetivou-se analisar aspectos da ecologia populacional do gastrópode Stramonita haemastoma em Ilhéus (Bahia). As amostragens foram realizadas mensalmente, entre outubro de 2007 e setembro de 2008, em um banco arenítico com 1,5 km de extensão, no qual foram estabelecidos dois pontos e dois níveis amostrais. Em cada nível foram feitas cinco repetições previamente aleatorizadas, utilizando-se um delimitador quadrado com 0,0625 m² de área. Os animais foram fotografados, quantificados e mensurados no local. Foi evidenciado que tanto recrutas quanto os demais indivíduos da população habitam preferencialmente as faixas mais próximas do infralitoral, onde, em função do maior tempo de submersão, os animais ficam menos sujeitos a estresses fisiológicos decorrentes de variação térmica e dessecação. Por apresentarem fendas e buracos, esses locais servem ainda de refúgio e ambiente para posturas de S. haemastoma. Foram observados recrutas ao longo de todo o período, evidenciando reprodução contínua.
