ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the phenotypic characteristics and typification of Creole goats in five localities of the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru. Materials and Methods: Data from 149 goats (25 males and 124 females) were collected, excluding animals under 2 years of age, pregnant, and sick. Seven qualitative characteristics and 11 zometric measurements were evaluated, and then 9 zometric indices were estimated. Results: In the region, goats with composite colors predominated (76.50%). Additionally, supernumerary (24.20%) and divergent teats (22.60%) were observed in females, while males exhibited a scrotal bifurcation (32.00%). The origin of the flock had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on body measurements, as well as on pelvic index, transverse pelvic index, longitudinal pelvic index, compactness index, and load cannon bone index, except for body index (BOI), proportionality index, dactyl thorax index (DTI), and relative cannon bone thickness index (

ABSTRACT

This study focused on evaluating the sensitivity and limitations of the simplified equipment used in the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique, comparing them with the analog extensometer, based on the mechanical property data of a composite made of fiberglass and epoxy resin. The objectives included establishing a methodology based on the literature, fabricating samples through manual lamination, conducting mechanical tests according to the ASTM D3039 and D3518 standards, comparing DIC with the analog extensometer of the testing machine, and contrasting the experimental results with classical laminate theory. Three composite plates with specific stacking sequences ([0]3, [90]4, and [±45]3) were fabricated, and samples were extracted for testing to determine tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and other properties. DIC was used to capture deformation fields during testing. Comparisons between data obtained from the analog extensometer and DIC revealed differences of 11.1% for the longitudinal modulus of elasticity E1 and 5.6% for E2. Under low deformation conditions, DIC showed lower efficiency due to equipment limitations. Finally, a theoretical analysis based on classical laminate theory, conducted using a Python script, estimated the longitudinal modulus of elasticity Ex and the shear strength of the [±45]3 laminate, highlighting a relative difference of 31.2% between the theoretical value of 7136 MPa and the experimental value of 5208 MPa for Ex.

ABSTRACT

The disparity between the sexes in stroke mortality has been demonstrated in people from different locations. The objective of this study was to analyze the disparity between sexes in stroke mortality in adults in the metropolitan area of Greater Vitoria between 2000 and 2021. Ecological time series design was conducted with a database of the Brazilian Health System Informatics Department. The annual percentage change and average annual percentage change were calculated through joinpoint regression. Pairwise comparisons using parallelism and coincidence tests were applied to compare temporal trends between men and women. Men had higher mortality rates in most years between 2000 and 2021. In contrast, women had higher proportional mortality values in all years evaluated from 2000 to 2021. The paired comparison revealed a disparity between the sexes in the proportional mortality time series (parallelism test: p = 0.003; coincidence test: p < 0.001). However, the time series of the mortality rates showed no disparity between the sexes (parallelism test: p = 0.114; coincidence test: p = 0.093). From 2000 to 2021, there was a disparity in proportional mortality from stroke between the sexes of the population in the metropolitan area of Greater Vitoria, Brazil. However, the time series of mortality rates between the sexes did not reveal any disparity in the study period.

ABSTRACT

Background: Transsphenoidal surgery has become a key element in the approach to skull base pathologies. The objective of the study was to explore the morphometry of the sphenoidal region in the Peruvian population, with an emphasis on understanding its specific anatomical characteristics and providing quantitative data for the planning of transsphenoidal surgery. Methods: A cross-sectional study included a random sample of 81 cases of healthy individuals who presented to the Radiology Department of a Private Hospital Center in Peru over 1 year. Skull computed tomography scans without contrast were performed, and a detailed morphometric analysis was conducted by an expert neurosurgeon, including measurements of four parameters to evaluate the anatomy of the craniofacial region. Results: Most participants exhibited complete sellar pneumatization, followed by incomplete sellar pneumatization, while conchal pneumatization was rare. Significant differences were found between men and women in the distance from the nasal opening to the dorsum of the sella turcica. No significant gender differences were observed in other anatomical measurements or significant changes with age in anatomical measurements. Conclusion: Morphometric analysis provides crucial data for the precise customization of surgical interventions in the Peruvian population, especially in transsphenoidal surgery. The results highlight the importance of considering individual anatomical differences and gender variability during surgical planning. Morphometry emerges as a valuable tool to enhance the quality and safety of transsphenoidal surgery by adapting surgical strategies to the specific anatomical dimensions of each patient.

ABSTRACT

Sulfuric acid anodizing assisted by a hydrothermal sealing with inhibitors [Ce3+-Mo6+] was used to prevent pitting corrosion on spray-deposited hypereutectic Al-Si alloy (A390). An investigation concerning the evaluation of pitting corrosion resistance on the anodic oxide thin film with ions incorporated was carried out in NaCl solution using electrochemical measurements (i.e., potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, EIS). The influence of Si phase morphology and size on the growth mechanism of an anodic oxide film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results were then compared with those for its equivalent IM390 alloy (Al-17Si-4.5Cu-0.6Mg) produced through a conventional process ingot metallurgy, IM. The electrochemical findings indicate that sulfuric acid anodizing followed by a simple hot water sealing treatment was ineffective. In this manner, an intense attack was localized by pitting corrosion that occurred on the anodic oxide film in less than three days, as denoted by characteristic changes in the EIS spectra at the lowest frequencies. Improved results were achieved for Ce-Mo surface modification, which can provide better corrosion resistance on the aluminum alloys because no signs of pits were observed during the corrosion testing.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Muscle loss is one of the phenotypic criteria of malnutrition, is highly prevalent in patients with cirrhosis, and is associated with adverse outcomes. Mid-arm muscle circumference (MAMC) estimates the skeletal muscle mass and is especially helpful in cases of fluid overload. This study aimed to propose MAMC cutoff points for patients with cirrhosis and demonstrate its association with 1-year mortality. METHODS: This is an analysis of cohort databases from five reference centers in Brazil that included inpatients and outpatients with cirrhosis aged ≥18 y. The nutritional variables obtained were the MAMC (n = 1075) and the subjective global assessment (n = 629). We established the MAMC cutoff points stratified by sex based on the subjective global assessment as a reference standard for malnutrition diagnosis, considering the sensitivity, specificity, and Youden index. An adjusted Cox regression model was used to test the association of MAMC cutoff points and 1-year mortality. RESULTS: We included 1075 patients with cirrhosis, with a mean age of 54.8 ± 11.3 y; 70.4% (n = 757) male. Most patients had alcoholic cirrhosis (47.1%, n = 506) and were classified as Child-Pugh B (44.7%, n = 480). The MAMC cutoff points for moderate and severe depletion were ≤21.5 cm and ≤24.2 cm; ≤20.9 cm and ≤22.9 cm for women and men, respectively. According to these cutoff points, 13.8% (n = 148) and 35.1% (n = 377) of the patients had moderate or severe MAMC depletion, respectively. The 1-year mortality rate was 17.3% (n = 186). In the multivariate analysis adjusted for sex, age, MELD-Na, and Child-Pugh scores, a severe depletion in MAMC was an independent increased risk factor for 1-year mortality (HR: 1.71, 95% CI: 1.24-2.35, P < 0.001). Each increase of 1 cm in MAMC values was associated with an 11% reduction in 1-year mortality risk (HR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.85-0.94, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Low MAMC classified according to the new cutoff points predicts mortality risk in patients with cirrhosis and could be used in clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION: The PID-5 is a tool used to assess maladaptive personality traits according to the DSM-5 Alternative Model. Objective: The objective is to seek evidence of the validity and reliability of the Personality Inventory for DMS-5 (PID-5-SRF) admin-istered online and assess its measurement invariance compared to the paper-and-pencil administration. METHODS: A sample of 274 individuals from the general population (73.4% of women; 34.76 years old ±11.6) completed the instrument online after the study was dissemi-nated on social media and among the authors' contacts. RESULTS: Internal consistency (facets α≥0.70; domains α≥0.89) and test-retest reliability (15 to 30 days: facets ICC≥0.63; domains ICC≥0.82) were satisfactory, but a floor effect was found in almost all the items. A large number of facets (N=9) showed better fit to a bifactorial structure, and the Exploratory Factor Analysis suggested that a six-factor model better fits the data. Measurement invariance between the online and paper-and-pencil administrations was not attested at a configural level. CONCLUSION: The results revealed satisfactory psychometric indicators when the instrument was applied online, confirming its feasibility in collecting data. However, the in-strument's structure is not invariant, and caution must be adopted when compar-ing and interpreting data collected through different formats.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the amplitude of the anatomical-mechanical angle (AMA-angle) using 4 measuring methods of the tibial distal anatomical axes (DAA) previously described, comparing the literature results to determine if there are significant differences in patients with cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) rupture. ANIMALS: This study was comprised of 30 tibiae (29 dogs), including 1 bilateral case. METHODS: A retrospective study was selected for this research. DAA measurements were performed on all surgically confirmed cases of canine CrCL rupture at Hospital Veterinário de Especialidades Bruselas from 2019 to 2022. Four different published methods (identified by surname of the corresponding author of the original publication) were compared. Tibial measurements were made using Veterinary Preoperative Orthopedic Planning Pro software (https://vpop-pro.com/) on mediolateral radiographic projections obtained from a digital database. RESULTS: The mean (range) in the DAA method conducted by Hulse obtained a AMA-angle of 5.4° (3.3 to 8.1°), 3.0° (0 to 5.8°) for Osmond et al, 3.2° (0.9 to 6°) for Miles, and 5.9° (2.4 to 8.8°) for Tudury. Differences among the means of the AMA-angle of the authors methods were found with a statistical difference (P < .05), except between Osmond and Miles. The mean AMA-angle with the Osmond method concurred with previous study results that determined the magnitude using the same measurement method of DAA in patients with CrCL rupture. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The AMA-angle magnitude has been associated with higher sensitivity and specificity for predicting the development of CrCL rupture compared to other anatomical factors evaluated; therefore, future comparisons with different methods of measurement of the DAA between healthy and affected patients are recommended to determine whether any of them can increase the percentage value as a predictive factor for the occurrence of this condition.

ABSTRACT

This study proposes a multiclass model to classify the severity of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) using bioimpedance measurements. The experimental setup considered three types of measurements using eight electrodes: global impedance with adjacent pattern, global impedance with opposite pattern, and direct impedance measurement, which were taken using an electronic device proposed by authors and based on the Analog Devices AD5933 impedance converter. The study comprised 37 participants, 25 with healthy knees and 13 with three different degrees of KOA. All participants performed 20 repetitions of each of the following five tasks: (i) sitting with the knee bent, (ii) sitting with the knee extended, (iii) sitting and performing successive extensions and flexions of the knee, (iv) standing, and (v) walking. Data from the 15 experimental setups (3 types of measurements×5 exercises) were used to train a multiclass random forest. The training and validation cycle was repeated 100 times using random undersampling. At each of the 100 cycles, 80% of the data were used for training and the rest for testing. The results showed that the proposed approach achieved average sensitivities and specificities of 100% for the four KOA severity grades in the extension, cyclic, and gait tasks. This suggests that the proposed method can serve as a screening tool to determine which individuals should undergo x-rays or magnetic resonance imaging for further evaluation of KOA.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the impact of maternal protein supplementation during mid-gestation on offspring, considering potential sex-related effects. Forty-three pregnant purebred Tabapuã beef cows (20 female and 23 male fetuses) were collectively managed in a pasture until 100 d of gestation. From 100 to 200 d of gestation, they were randomly assigned to the restricted group [(RES) - basal diet (75% corn silage + 25% sugar cane bagasse + mineral mixture); n = 24] or control group [(CON) - same basal diet + based-plant supplement [40% of crude protein, 3.5 g/kg of body weight (BW); n = 19]. From 200 d of gestation until parturition, all cows were equally fed corn silage and mineral mixture. During the cow-calf phase, cows and their calves were maintained in a pasture area. After weaning, calves were individually housed and evaluated during the backgrounding (255 to 320 d), growing 1 (321 to 381 d), and growing 2 (382 to 445 d) phases. Offspring's blood samples were collected at 210 and 445 d of age. Samples of skeletal muscle tissue were collected through biopsies at 7, 30, and 445 d of age. Muscle tissue samples were subjected to reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis. Prenatal treatment and offspring's sex (when pertinent) were considered fixed effects. The significance level was set at 5%. At mid-gestation, cows supplemented with protein reached 98% and 92% of their protein and energy requirements, while nonsupplemented cows attained only 30% and 50% of these requirements, respectively. The RES offspring were lighter at birth (27 vs. 31 kg), weaning (197 vs. 214 kg), and 445 d of age (398 vs. 429 kg) (P ≤ 0.05). The CON calves had greater (P < 0.05) morphometric measurements overall. The CON offspring had ~26% greater muscle fiber area (P ≤ 0.01). There was a trend (P = 0.06) for a greater Mechanistic target of rapamycin kinase mRNA expression in the Longissimus thoracis in the CON group at 7 d of age. The Myogenic differentiation 1 expression was greater (P = 0.02) in RES-females. Upregulation of Carnitine palmitoyltransferase 2 was observed in RES offspring at 445 d (P = 0.04). Expression of Fatty acid binding protein 4 (P < 0.001), Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (P < 0.001), and Stearoyl-Coenzyme A desaturase (P < 0.001) was upregulated in CON-females. Therefore, protein supplementation during gestation enhances offspring growth and promotes favorable responses to lipogenesis, particularly in females.


In tropical conditions, beef cows on pasture often experience protein restriction during mid-to-late gestation, potentially impacting offspring development negatively. To address this, we investigated the effects of strategic protein supplementation for pregnant beef cows fed low-quality forage during mid-gestation on the postnatal growth trajectory of their offspring. The supplementation program, implemented during mid-gestation, increased dry matter intake by addressing nitrogen deficiency in the rumen, resulting in meeting 98% and 92% of protein and energy requirements in supplemented cows. In contrast, nonsupplemented cows met only 30% and 50% of these requirements, respectively. Consequently, protein supplementation positively influenced the postnatal growth trajectory of the offspring, attributed to beneficial changes in secondary myogenesis and hypertrophy processes. Supplementing cows with crude protein also stimulated lipogenesis, potentially contributing to intramuscular fat deposition, particularly in females. Therefore, this study emphasizes the importance of nutritional interventions for pregnant beef cows fed low-quality forage.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the beaks of three species of birds using radiography and computed tomography (CT). The mean lengths of maxillary and mandibular rostra on radiographs were highest for toco toucan, followed by buff-necked ibis, and least for red-legged seriema birds. The height and width of maxillary and mandibular rostra measured on CT had mean values highest for toco toucans, followed by red-legged seriema, and least for buff-necked ibis. Except for the proximal region of the maxillary rostrum, the HU values were positive for other regions of the maxillary and mandibular rostra in the buff-necked ibis and red-legged seriema and negative in all for the toco toucan.

The variation in the dimensions of the body of living beings in relation to their size, function, or shape is known as allometry. Allometry studies allow the analysis of the function of body structures and their relationship with the performance and survival of breeds and species. The aim of this study was to describe the ontogenetic characteristics of the weight of certain bone elements of the Sanmartinero creole bovine breed, from an early age (6 months) until maturity. A total of 79 females of the Sanmartinero creole bovine breed with an age range of 0.5 to 10 years were studied. Body measurements were obtained individually using standard procedures: cannon perimeter, thoracic perimeter, body length, withers height, and body weight. Functional and production indices were obtained for animals aged more than 3 years (n = 53): corporal index, anamorphosis index, dactylo thoracic index, and the relative thickness of the cannon. The correlation between body weight and the cannon perimeter showed no trend towards a plateau. In the Sanmartinero creole bovine, therefore, a very early development of the cannon perimeter is detected, which could lead to bone fragility in heavier animals. Therefore, data suggest little harmony with appendicular bone development, i.e., with less robust cannons which are those necessary to support body mass. It is suggested that in genetic improvement programs of the Sanmartinero creole bovine, the measurement of the cannon perimeter, the withers height, and the thoracic perimeter should be considered.

Background: The foramen magnum, as an anatomical structure, holds clinical and functional significance due to its strategic location in the craniovertebral transition. A detailed understanding of its dimensions and shapes is crucial for better comprehension of related pathologies and for enhancing neurosurgical techniques within a specific population. The objective is to measure precise morphometric reference points of the foramen magnum in individuals of Peruvian ancestry, aiming to establish specific anatomical patterns and potential variations within this population. Methods: The study was conducted on 17 unidentified skulls donated to the NeuroZone3D Research Center, utilizing an inelastic and soft measuring tape as the tool. Our report considered direct anthropometric measurement techniques with data collection performed by a single researcher. Results: Distinct morphometric characteristics were observed in the foramen magnum of the Peruvian population compared to other studies. The average measurements of the skull base revealed a foramen magnum with a mean length of 33.80 mm and a width of 28.70 mm, along with right condyles measuring 25 mm in length and 14.10 mm in width, and left condyles measuring 23.80 mm in length and 13.90 mm in width. Conclusion: The morphometric analysis of the foramen magnum in the Peruvian population provides valuable insights into specific anatomical features within this ethnic group. These findings could have significant implications across various medical and surgical disciplines, from interpreting diagnostic images to designing more precise therapeutic interventions tailored to this population.

This work presents the effect of CeO2 nanoparticles (CeO2-NPs) on Cu-50Ni-5Al alloys on morphological, microstructural, degradation, and electrochemical behavior at high temperatures. The samples obtained by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering were exposed to a molten eutectic mixture of Li2CO3-K2CO3 for 504 h. The degradation of the materials was analyzed using gravimetry measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Different characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, were used to investigate the phase composition, parameter lattice, and microstructure of Cu-Ni-Al alloys reinforced with CeO2-NPs. The hardness of the composite was also examined using the Vickers hardness test. Gravimetry measurements revealed that the sample with 1 wt.% CeO2-NPs presented the best response to degradation with a less drastic mass variation. Impedance analysis also revealed that by adding 1 wt.% CeO2-NPs, the impedance modulus increased, which is related to a lower porosity of the oxide film or a thicker oxide layer. The microhardness also significantly increased, incorporating 1 wt.% CeO2-NPs, which reduced with higher CeO2-NPs content, which is possibly associated with a more uniform distribution using 1 wt.% CeO2-NPs in the Cu-Ni-Al matrix that avoided the aggregation phenomenon.

Resumen: La evaluación de la fuerza en la mano es utilizada en ámbitos de salud y laborales, está compuesta por la fuerza de agarre y la fuerza de pellizco o fuerza pinch (Palmar Pinch - PP y Key Pinch - KP). La fuerza pinch ha sido poco estudiada y relacionada con variables antropométricas. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar la relación entre la fuerza PP y KP con el género, la dominancia, la edad y variables antropométricas. Haciendo uso de un dinamómetro Jamar y con la participación de 681 sujetos (48,9 % F y 51.1 % M) aparentemente sanos de la Ciudad de Bogotá (Colombia), quienes desempeñaban diferentes actividades ocupacionales, se encontró que las fuerzas PP y KP fueron significativamente más altas en los hombres que en las mujeres tanto en la mano no dominante (8.27 Kgf Vs 6.0 Kgf) como en la mano dominante (8.57 Kgf Vs 6.27 Kgf). Se propusieron modelos predictivos que definieron como variables principales la edad, espesor, circunferencia y circunferencia máxima de la mano. En el género femenino se estableció como variable primordial la edad, mientras que en el masculino en dos modelos se define la circunferencia de la mano y en otros dos la circunferencia máxima de la mano.


Abstract: The evaluation of the force in the hand is used in health and labor fields; it is composed of the grip force and the pinch force (Palmar Pinch - PP and Key Pinch - KP). The pinch force has not had significant amount of studies and connections with anthropometric variables. This work aimed to determine the relationship between the PP and KP strength with gender, dominance, age, and anthropometric variables. Using a Jamar dynamometer and with the participation of 681 subjects apparently healthy (48.9 % F and 51.1 % M) from the City of Bogotá (Colombia), who performed different occupational activities, it was found that the PP and KP forces were significantly higher in men than in women both in the non-dominant hand (8.27 Kgf Vs. 6.0 Kgf) and in the dominant hand (8.57 Kgf Vs 6.27 Kgf). Introducción: La incorporación de modelos digitales ofrece al ortodoncista una alternativa a los modelos de estudio de yeso que se utilizan habitualmente. Estos son un componente estándar de los registros de ortodoncia y son fundamentales para el diagnóstico y la planificación del tratamiento. No obstante, es importante indagar sobre la confiabilidad de las nuevas tecnologías. Objetivo: Evaluar la reproducibilidad de las medidas digitales y manuales de alineación dental en modelos iniciales de pacientes de ortodoncia. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio de evaluación de tecnología diagnóstica, con 80 modelos de yeso, que fueron digitalizados con el escáner Ineos X5. Una vez obtenidos los modelos en yeso y sus imágenes digitales, el investigador que obtuvo el mejor resultado en la calibración inter e intra examinador realizó la medición de la alineación dental. Las medidas manuales se tomaron con un calibrador digital, y las digitales fueron tomadas en el software Nemocast. El análisis incluyó el cálculo del coeficiente de correlación intraclase (CCI) y los límites de acuerdo de Bland y Altman. Un valor de p < 0,05 fue considerado como estadísticamente significativo. Resultados: Los valores de CCI oscilaron entre 0,643 y 0,874. Más de la mitad de las mediciones obtuvieron valores de CCI superiores a 0,81, lo que se consideró una reproducibilidad "casi perfecta", según la interpretación sugerida por Landis y Koch. Se obtuvo un promedio de las diferencias entre -0,2 a -0,4, con límites de acuerdo estrechos. Conclusiones: Se encontró una reproducibilidad "casi perfecta" y un promedio de las diferencias cercano a cero entre las medidas manuales y digitales(AU)


Introduction: The incorporation of digital models offers the orthodontist an alternative to the plaster study models that are commonly used. These are a standard component of orthodontic records and are critical to diagnosis and treatment planning. It is important to inquire about the reliability of new technologies. Objective: To evaluate the reproducibility of digital and manual measurements of dental alignment in initial models of orthodontic patients. Methods: A diagnostic technology evaluation study was carried out with 80 plaster models that were digitized with the Ineos X5 Scanner. Once the plaster models and digital images of them were obtained, the researcher who obtained the best result in the inter and intra examiner calibration performed the dental alignment measurement. Manual measurements were taken with a digital caliper, and digital ones were taken in the Nemocast software. The analysis included the calculation of the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and the Bland and Altman limits of agreement. A value of p <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: ICC values ​​ranged between 0.643 and 0.874, more than half of the measurements obtained ICC values ​​higher than 0.81, which was considered "almost perfect" reproducibility according to the interpretation suggested by Landis and Koch. Differences between -0.2 to -0.4 were averaged with narrow limits of agreement. Conclusions: An "almost perfect" reproducibility was found and an average of the differences close to zero between manual and digital measurements.

ABSTRACT

This study reports the use of an inorganic corrosion inhibitor to mitigate dissolved CO2-induced corrosion. Using electrochemical techniques (polarization curves, open circuit potential, polarization resistance, and electrochemical impedance), the effect of adding Nd3+ ions on the corrosion resistance of X52 steel immersed in CO2-saturated brine at 20 °C and 60 °C was evaluated. The polarization curves showed that the Icorr values tend to decrease with increasing Nd3+ ion concentration, up to the optimal inhibition concentration, and that the corrosion potential increases at nobler values. Open circuit potential measurements showed a large increase in potential values immediately after the addition of the Nd3+ ions. Similarly, polarization resistance measurements showed similar trends. It was observed that regardless of temperature, Nd3+ ions can reduce the corrosion rate by more than 97% at doses as low as 0.001 M. Electrochemical impedance measurements confirmed the formation of a protective layer on the steel surface, which caused an increase in the magnitude of the impedance module and phase angle, which indicates an increase in the resistance to charge transfer and capacitive properties of the metallic surface. The characterization of the metallic surface showed that the protective layer was formed by Nd carbonates, whose formation was due to a CO2 capture process.

ABSTRACT

The accuracy assessment of three different Normalized Difference Water indices (NDWIs) was performed in La Salada, a typical lake in the Pampean region. Data were gathered during April 2019, a period in which floods occurred in a large area in the Southwest of the Buenos Aires Province (Argentina). The accuracy of the estimations using spaceborne medium-resolution multi-spectral imaging and the reliability of three NDWIs to highlight shallow water features in satellite images were evaluated using a high-resolution airbone imagery as ground truth. We show that these indices computed using Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 imagery are only loosely correlated to the actual flooded area in shallow waters. Indeed, NDWI values vary significantly depending on the satellite mission used and the type of index computed.

ABSTRACT

Determination of live weight, which is one of the most important features that determine meat production, is a very important issue for herd management and sustainable livestock. In this context, the necessity of finding alternative methods has emerged, especially in rural conditions, due to the difficulties to be experienced in finding the weighing tool. Especially for conditions with no weighing tool, it has been tried to establish relations between the information obtained from body measurements and live weight. Since these studies will differ from species to species and breed to breed, the need for new studies is extremely high. For this aim, it is to evaluate the body measurement information obtained with the present study using several statistical approaches. To implement this aim, several data mining and machine learning algorithms such as multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), classification and regression tree (CART), and support vector machine regression (SVR) algorithms were used for training (70%) and test (30%) sets. To predict final body weight, 280 hair sheep breeds (162 female and 118 male) ranging from 2 months to 3 years were used with different data mining and machine learning approaches. Various goodness-of-fit criteria were used to evaluate the performances of the aforementioned algorithms. Although the MARS and SVR algorithms gave the same and highest results in terms of R2 and r values for both the train and the test sets, the SVR algorithm is one of the methods to be recommended as a result of this study, especially when other goodness-of-fit criteria are evaluated. In conclusion, the usage of SVR algorithms may be a useful tool of machine learning approaches for detecting the hair sheep breed standards and may contribute to increasing the sheep meat quality in Mexico.

ABSTRACT

Background: Recently it has been proposed a new approach to estimate aortic systolic blood pressure (aoSBP) without the need for specific devices, operator-dependent techniques and/or complex wave propagation models/algorithms. The approach proposes aoSBP can be quantified from brachial diastolic and mean blood pressure (bDBP, bMBP) as: aoSBP = bMBP2/bDBP. It remains to be assessed to what extent the method and/or equation used to obtain the bMBP levels considered in aoSBP calculation may affect the estimated aoSBP, and consequently the agreement with aoSBP invasively recorded. Methods: Brachial and aortic pressure were simultaneously obtained invasively (catheterization) and non-invasively (brachial oscillometry) in 89 subjects. aoSBP was quantified in seven different ways, using measured (oscillometry-derived) and calculated (six equations) mean blood pressure (MBP) levels. The agreement between invasive and estimated aoSBP was analyzed (Concordance correlation coefficient; Bland-Altman Test). Conclusions: The ability of the equation "aoSBP = MBP2/DBP" to (accurately) estimate (error <5 mmHg) invasive aoSBP depends on the method and equation considered to determine bMBP, and on the aoSBP levels (proportional error). Oscillometric bMBP and/or approaches that consider adjustments for heart rate or a form factor ∼40% (instead of the usual 33%) would be the best way to obtain the bMBP levels to be used to calculate aoSBP.
