ABSTRACT

La metodología de Planificación Centrada en la Persona (PCP) cada vez tiene mayor impacto en España. Comenzando desde las distintas legislaciones que regulan la atención a este colectivo en las diferentes autonomías y terminando en los centros que proveen este servicio. No obstante, existe escasa literatura internacional de estudios empíricos a grandes escalas que sitúen este enfoque metodológico en una posición relevante que garantice la eficacia de la PCP. El objetivo principal de este estudio es conocer el estado del uso de la metodología de PCP a través de estudios avalados empíricamente que sostengan tanto beneficios como limitaciones durante los últimos 10 años (2012-2022). Para ello, se ha realizado una revisión sistemática desde las directrices de PRISMA (2020), que incluye un total de 31 artículos. Como conclusión, se han descubierto más beneficios que limitaciones entre las que destacan las ventajas en su uso para las personas con discapacidad intelectual y del desarrollo y las mejoras de aspectos relacionados con la autodeterminación. No obstante, las limitaciones prevalecen por la falta de apoyos y recursos adecuados de las organizaciones para responder a una planificación centrada en la persona y la necesidad de formación de las personas implicadas en la elaboración de la PCP, lo que genera la incógnita de si se están realizando buenas prácticas en el uso de dicha metodología. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To find out the possibilities and usefulness of introducing cinemeducation in medical institutions, and to formulate suggestive inserts for faculty and policy-makers. METHODS: The quantitative study was conducted in Lahore from January to June 2021 after approval from the ethics review committee of King Edward Medical University, Lahore, and comprised fourth and final year medical students. Relevant short clips from seven movies of different genres were selected and shown to the students who were then divided into eight equal groups. Every session lasted 30 minutes, and was followed by an interactive discussion between the students and faculty members. The critical aspects of the sessions were discussed and analysed. Data was collected using a 7-item questionnaire that was scored on a 5-point Likert scale. Data was analysed using SPSS 21. RESULTS: Of the 240 participants, the questionnaire was returned duly filled by 219(91.25%). Among them, 176(80.4%) said they found the experience worthwhile and that they would like to have such an experience again, while 184(84%) said such sessions should be made a part of regular curriculum. Also, 166(75.8%) participants felt that the session had helped them learn about crucial features of medicine, and 169(77%) thought that the session facilitated the understanding towards patient management. CONCLUSIONS: Cinemeducation was found to be an excellent tool of pedagogy that should be incorporated in all the relevant disciplines of medicine and allied sciences.

ABSTRACT

To maximize the efficiency of biomass waste utilization and waste management, a novel acid-modified magnetic biomass spent coffee grounds (NiFe2O4/SCG) was obtained by pyrolysis at 473 K and co-precipitation methods and employed to eliminate bivalent mercury (Hg(II)) in water bodies. The prepared NiFe2O4/SCG adsorbent exhibits remarkable magnetism with a strength of 45.78 emu/g and can easily be separated from water via a magnetic force. The adsorption of Hg(II) over the NiFe2O4/SCG has an optimal conditions of pH = 8, T = 39 ℃, and dosage of 0.055 g/L, and the maximal adsorption capacity for Hg(II) is 167.44 mg/g via Response Surface Methodology optimization. The removal of Hg(II) over NiFe2O4/SCG primarily involves ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, and chelation; conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models; and is an endothermic reaction. Additionally, the magnetic biomass NiFe2O4/SCG has good regeneration capability and stability. The application research reveal that inorganic salt ions, nitrogen fertilizer urea, humus, and other contaminants in different actual water bodies (river water, lake water, and the effluent of sewage treatment plant) have little effect on the adsorption of Hg(II) over the NiFe2O4/SCG. The prepared adsorbent NiFe2O4/SCG has practical application value for removing Hg(II) from water bodies.

ABSTRACT

The development of geopolymer concrete offers promising prospects for sustainable construction practices due to its reduced environmental impact compared to conventional Portland cement concrete. However, the complexity involved in geopolymer concrete mix design often poses challenges for engineers and practitioners. In response, this study proposes a simplified approach for designing geopolymer concrete mixtures, drawing upon principles from Portland cement concrete mix design standards and recommended molar ratios of oxides involved in geopolymer synthesis. The proposed methodology aims to streamline the mix design process while optimizing key factors such as chemical composition, alkali activation solution, water content, and curing conditions to achieve desired compressive strength and workability. By leveraging commonalities between Portland cement concrete and geopolymer concrete, this approach seeks to facilitate the adoption of geopolymer concrete in practical construction applications. The proposed mix design guidelines have been validated through examples for concrete cured under different conditions, including outdoor and oven curing. Future research should focus on validating the proposed methodology through experimental studies and exploring cost-effective alternatives for alkali activation solutions to enhance the feasibility and scalability of geopolymer concrete production. Overall, the proposed simplified approach holds promise for advancing the utilization of geopolymer concrete as a sustainable alternative in the construction industry.

ABSTRACT

Ultrasonic-assisted oxidative desulfurization (UAOD) is utilized to lessen environmental problems due to sulfur emissions. The process uses immiscible polar solvents and ultrasonic waves to enhance desulfurization efficiency. Prior research focused on comparing the effectiveness of UAOD for gasoline using response surface methodology. This study evaluates the desulfurization efficiency and operating costs, including ultrasonic power, irradiation time, and oxidant amount to determine optimal conditions. The study used a multi-objective fuzzy optimization (MOFO) approach to evaluate the economic viability of UAOD for gasoline. It identified upper and lower boundaries and then optimized the desulfurization efficiency and operating costs while considering uncertainty errors. The fuzzy model employed max-min aggregation to optimize the degree of satisfaction on a scale from 0 (unsatisfied) to 1 (satisfied). Optimal conditions for gasoline UAOD were found at 445.43 W ultrasonic power, 4.74 min irradiation time, and 6.73 mL oxidant, resulting in a 66.79 % satisfaction level. This yielded a 78.64 % desulfurization efficiency (YA) at an operating cost of 13.49 USD/L. Compared to existing literature, gasoline desulfurization was less efficient and less costly. The solutions provided by MOFO demonstrate not only economic viability through decreased overall operating costs and simplified process conditions, but also offer valuable insights for optimizing prospective future industrial-scale UAOD processes.

ABSTRACT

The simulated patient methodology (SPM) is considered the "gold standard" as covert participatory observation. SPM is attracting increasing interest for the investigation of community pharmacy practice; however, there is criticism that SPM can only show a small picture of everyday pharmacy practice and therefore has limited external validity. On the one hand, a certain design and application of the SPM goes hand in hand with an increase in external validity. Even if, on the other hand, this occurs at the expense of internal validity due to the trade-off situation, the justified criticism of the SPM for investigating community pharmacy practice can be countered.

ABSTRACT

The optimal conditions of applied factors to reuse Aluminium AA6061 scraps are (450, 500, and 550) °C preheating temperature, (1-15) % Boron Carbide (B4C), and Zirconium (ZrO2) hybrid reinforced particles at 120 min forging time via Hot Forging (HF) process. The response surface methodology (RSM) and machine learning (ML) were established for the optimisations and comparisons towards materials strength structure. The Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) strength and Microhardness (MH) were significantly increased by increasing the processed temperature and reinforced particles because of the material dispersion strengthening. The high melting point of particles caused impedance movements of aluminium ceramics dislocations which need higher plastic deformation force and hence increased the material's mechanical and physical properties. But, beyond Al/10 % B4C + 10 % ZrO2 the strength and hardness were decreased due to more particle agglomeration distribution. The optimisation tools of both RSM and ML show high agreement between the reported results of applied parameters towards the materials' strength characterisation. The microstructure analysis of Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) provides insights mapping behavioural characterisation supports related to strength and hardness properties. The distribution of different volumes of ceramic particle proportion was highlighted. The environmental impacts were also analysed by employing a life cycle assessment (LCA) to identify energy savings because of its fewer processing steps and produce excellent hybrid materials properties.

BACKGROUND: Effective health care services that meet the diverse needs of children and adolescents with cancer are required to alleviate their physical, psychological, and social challenges and improve their quality of life. Previous studies showed that serious games help promote people's health. However, the potential for serious games to be used for successful cancer control for children and adolescents has received less attention. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to map the use of serious games in cancer prevention and cancer care for children and adolescents, and provide future directions for serious games' development and implementation within the context of cancer control for children and adolescents. METHODS: This study followed a combination of the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews) and the JBI (Joanna Briggs Institute) framework for the conduct of scoping reviews. PubMed, CINAHL Plus Full Text, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, and American Psychological Association (APA) PsycINFO databases were used for the search. RESULTS: From the initial 2750 search results, 63 papers were included in the review, with 28 quantitative, 14 qualitative, and 21 mixed method studies. Most of the studies were cancer care serious game papers (55/63, 87%) and a small number of studies were cancer prevention serious game papers (8/63, 13%). The majority of the included studies were published between 2019 and 2023 (cancer prevention: 5/8, 63%; cancer care: 35/55, 64%). The majority of the studies were conducted in Europe (cancer prevention: 3/8, 38%; cancer care: 24/55, 44%) and North America (cancer prevention: 4/8, 50%; cancer care: 17/55, 31%). Adolescents were the most represented age group in the studies' participants (cancer prevention: 8/8, 100%; cancer care: 46/55, 84%). All (8/8, 100%) cancer prevention serious game papers included healthy people as participants, and 45 out of 55 (82%) cancer care serious game papers included patients with cancer. The majority of cancer prevention serious game papers addressed game preference as a target outcome (4/8, 50%). The majority of cancer care serious game papers addressed symptom management as a target outcome (28/55, 51%). Of the cancer care studies examining serious games for symptom management, the majority of the studies were conducted to treat psychological (13/55, 24%) and physical symptoms (10/55, 18%). CONCLUSIONS: This review shows both the growth of interest in the use of serious games for cancer control among children and adolescents and the potential for bias in the relevant literature. The diverse characteristics of the included papers suggest that serious games can be used in various ways for cancer control among children and adolescents while highlighting the need to develop and implement serious games in underrepresented areas.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effects of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) combined with ultrasonic stress germination (AUG) treatment on the phenolic content and antioxidant activity of highland barley (HB). Key variables, including germination times (ranging from 0 to 96 h), ultrasonic power (200-500 W), and GABA concentration (5-20 mmol/L), were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) to enhance the enrichment of phenolic compounds. Furthermore, the study assessed the content, composition, and antioxidant activities of phenolic compounds in HB under various treatment conditions such as germination alone (G), ultrasonic stress germination (UG), and AUG treatment. RESULTS: The study identified optimal conditions for the phenolic enrichment of HB, which included a germination time of 60 h, an ultrasound power of 300 W, and a GABA concentration of 15 mmol L-1. Under these conditions, the total phenolic content (TPC) in HB was measured at 7.73 milligrams of gallic acid equivalents per gram dry weight (mg GAE/g DW), representing a 34.96% enhancement compared to untreated HB. Notably, all treatment modalities - G, UG, and AUG - significantly increased the phenolic content and antioxidant activity in HB, with the AUG treatment proving to be the most effective. CONCLUSION: These obtained results suggest that AUG treatment is a promising processing method for enriching phenolic compounds and improving antioxidant activity in HB. Subsequently, the AUG-treated HB can be used to develop phenolic-rich germinated functional foods to further broaden the application of HB. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In-depth interviews are a common method of qualitative data collection, providing rich data on individuals' perceptions and behaviors that would be challenging to collect with quantitative methods. Researchers typically need to decide on sample size a priori. Although studies have assessed when saturation has been achieved, there is no agreement on the minimum number of interviews needed to achieve saturation. To date, most research on saturation has been based on in-person data collection. During the COVID-19 pandemic, web-based data collection became increasingly common, as traditional in-person data collection was possible. Researchers continue to use web-based data collection methods post the COVID-19 emergency, making it important to assess whether findings around saturation differ for in-person versus web-based interviews. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify the number of web-based interviews needed to achieve true code saturation or near code saturation. METHODS: The analyses for this study were based on data from 5 Food and Drug Administration-funded studies conducted through web-based platforms with patients with underlying medical conditions or with health care providers who provide primary or specialty care to patients. We extracted code- and interview-specific data and examined the data summaries to determine when true saturation or near saturation was reached. RESULTS: The sample size used in the 5 studies ranged from 30 to 70 interviews. True saturation was reached after 91% to 100% (n=30-67) of planned interviews, whereas near saturation was reached after 33% to 60% (n=15-23) of planned interviews. Studies that relied heavily on deductive coding and studies that had a more structured interview guide reached both true saturation and near saturation sooner. We also examined the types of codes applied after near saturation had been reached. In 4 of the 5 studies, most of these codes represented previously established core concepts or themes. Codes representing newly identified concepts, other or miscellaneous responses (eg, "in general"), uncertainty or confusion (eg, "don't know"), or categorization for analysis (eg, correct as compared with incorrect) were less commonly applied after near saturation had been reached. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides support that near saturation may be a sufficient measure to target and that conducting additional interviews after that point may result in diminishing returns. Factors to consider in determining how many interviews to conduct include the structure and type of questions included in the interview guide, the coding structure, and the population under study. Studies with less structured interview guides, studies that rely heavily on inductive coding and analytic techniques, and studies that include populations that may be less knowledgeable about the topics discussed may require a larger sample size to reach an acceptable level of saturation. Our findings also build on previous studies looking at saturation for in-person data collection conducted at a small number of sites.

ABSTRACT

Considering comprehensive utilization of natural products, isolation and activity determination processes of bioactive compounds are essential. In this study, a combined high-speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC) with preparative HPLC method was developed to isolate the five antioxidant polyphenols from 75% ethanol extract of Malus pumila Mill. leaves. The HSCCC conditions were optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) considering two response indexes including retention of stationary phase and analysis time. The optimal HSCCC conditions were flow rate of 2.11 mL/min, revolution speed of 717 rpm, and temperature of 25℃, with a solvent system of ethyl acetate/methanol/water (10:1:10, v/v/v). The unseparated fractions obtained from HSCCC were subjected to preparative HPLC for further isolation. As a result, phloridzin (15.3 mg), isoquercitrin (2.1 mg), quercetin 3-O-xyloside (1.9 mg), quercetin-3-O-arabinoside (4.0 mg), and quercitrin (2.0 mg) were isolated from 200.0 mg extracts. The purities of these compounds were all above 92%. Their chemical structures were identified by mass spectrometer and nuclear magnetic resonance. The five isolated compounds were further investigated for their rat hippocampal neuroprotective effects against hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress. No cytotoxicity was observed in all tested concentrations. While all five compounds except phloridzin showed significantly neurogenic activities and neuroprotective effects, especially at the concentration of 0.5 mg/L. These results demonstrate that RSM is a suitable technique for optimisation of HSCCC and the isolated polyphenols can be used as antioxidants in pharmaceutical and food products.

ABSTRACT

Environmental pollution is increasing worldwide due to population and industrialization. Among the various forms of pollution, water pollution poses a significant challenge in contemporary times. In this study, we synthesized CuO-decorated montmorillonite K30 (MK30) nanosheets via a simple ultrasonication technique. The structural, morphological, compositional, and optical properties of the synthesized nanocomposites were evaluated using advanced instrumentation techniques. The morphology of CuO was cubic and cubic CuO evenly designed on the MK30, which was proved by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The adsorption photocatalytic activity of the synthesized cubic CuO/MK30 composites was examined through the degradation of MB under visible light irradiation. The apparent reaction rate constant of 20% CuO/MK30 was 12.5 folds higher than that of CuO. These conditions included a catalyst dosage ranging from 5 to 15 mg, a pH level ranging from to 3-11, and a pollutant concentration ranging from 5 to 20 mg/L. The optimal conditions for MB dye removal were determined using response surface methodology (RSM). A scavenger study of the composite was conducted and verified that •O2- and •OH radicals play an important role in the degradation process. This investigation addressed the process of adsorption and potential removal pathways, with a particular emphasis on the role of functional groups. The environmentally friendly CuO/MK30 nanocomposites exhibited potential as photocatalysts for efficiently absorbing and degrading MB dye and TC drug pollutants. They represent promising candidates for the treatment of industrial wastewater, aiming to mitigate the environmental threats posed by organic pollutants.

The effluent from the oil drilling site is a complex mixture of hazardous chemicals that causes environmental impacts on its disposal. The treatment of oil drill-site wastewater has not been explored much, and understanding its characteristics and optimizing the treatment process are required. In the present study, we have optimized the electrocoagulation process with aluminum electrodes for drill-site wastewater treatment. A multi-level factorial center composite design using response surface methodology is applied to optimize the effect of current density (CD), pH, and inter-electrode distance (IED) on chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. The increasing current density shows a significant increase in COD removal, and a similar trend was observed with a decreased pH. It was found that with current density and inter-electrode distance, the maximum COD removal achieved was 70% at the CD of 19.04 mA cm-2 and IED 2.6 cm. By varying pH and current density, the COD removal reached up to 90% at pH 6 and CD 19.04 mA cm-2. The study shows that the current density is the dominant factor for the process's energy consumption and operating cost, followed by pH. This study's findings could be effectively used to develop large-scale treatment processes through electrocoagulation.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: "Programme science" deploys scientific methods to address questions that are a priority to support the impact of public health programmes. As such, programme science responds to the challenges of making such studies: (1) feasible to undertake, (2) useful, (3) rigorous, (4) real-world-relevant, (5) informative, and undertaken by (6) equitable partnerships. The acronym "FURRIE" is proposed to describe this set of six challenges. This paper discusses selected HIV/STI (sexually transmitted infection) programme science case studies to illustrate how programme science rises to the FURRIE challenges. DISCUSSION: One way in which programme science is made more feasible is through the analysis and interpretation of data collected through service delivery. For some questions, these data can be augmented through methods that reach potential clients of services who have not accessed services or been lost to follow-up. Process evaluation can enhance the usefulness of programme science by studying implementation processes, programme-client interactions and contextual factors. Ensuring rigour by limiting bias and confounding in the real-world context of programme science studies requires methodological innovation. Striving for scientific rigour can also have the unintended consequence of creating a gap between what happens in a study, and what happens in the "real-world." Community-led monitoring is one approach to grounding data collection in the real-world experience of clients. Evaluating complex, context-specific strategies to strengthen health outcomes in a way that is informative for other settings requires clear specification of the intervention packages that are planned and delivered in practice. Programme science provides a model for equitable partnership through co-leadership between programmes, researchers and the communities they serve. CONCLUSIONS: Programme science addresses the FURRIE challenges, thereby improving programme impact and ultimately health outcomes and health equity. The adoption and adaptation of the types of novel programme science approaches showcased here should be promoted within and beyond the HIV/STI field.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Case study research (CSR) has gained popularity across disciplines due to its ability to provide detailed insights into specific phenomena. AIM: To explore the philosophy and methodology of CSR, drawing from notable authors who have contributed to its development. DISCUSSION: This article discusses the characteristics of CSR in terms of design and method in both quantitative and qualitative approaches. It examines CSR's advantages and disadvantages as a research method. It draws on two example case studies to emphasise the use of CSR for exploring complex healthcare and social care settings. CONCLUSION: CSR has proven valuable in nursing research for investigating complex clinical problems, patient-care scenarios, and organisational dynamics and phenomena. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: CSR provides a methodological framework for nursing research that offers a unique lens for exploring multifaceted, complex issues. This ultimately improves patient care outcomes.

ABSTRACT

The current study proposes an optimized ethanolic extraction for the efficient recovery of high-value components from Pakistani olives (cv. Arbequina) using response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural networking (ANN). The extracts were investigated for antioxidant properties and GC-MS metabolite profiling.  Four factors such as time, temperature, solvent concentration, and solute weight (g/100 mL) were utilized as independent variables for determining the response (% yield).  The results obtained under optimum extraction conditions such as duration (25 min), temperature (45°C), solvent concentration (65%; ethanol: water v/v), and solute (7.50 g) indicated an extract yield of 40.96% from Arbiquina olives. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) for the RSM model showed significant p-values and a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9960, confirming model reliability.  The multilayer perceptron architecture was used in ANN, and the results were fairly consistent with the experimental findings. Arbequina olive extract (AOE) demonstrated significant antioxidant ability in terms of total phenolics, total flavonoid concentration, and DPPH radical scavenging. The GC-MS analysis of AOE revealed the presence of several bioactives, including oleic acid (36.22%), hydroxytyrosol (3.95%), tyrosol (3.32%), ß-sitosterol (2.10%), squalene (1.10%), sinapic acid (0.67%), α-tocopherol (0.66%), vanillic acid (0.56%), 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (0.31%), and quercetin.

ABSTRACT

Inductive generalization is adaptive in novel contexts for both biological and artificial intelligence. Spontaneous generalization in inexperienced animals raises questions on whether predispositions (evolutionarily acquired biases, or priors) enable generalization from sparse data, without reinforcement. We exposed neonate chicks to an artificial social partner of a specific color, and then looked at generalization on the red-yellow or blue-green ranges. Generalization was inconsistent with an unbiased model. Biases included asymmetrical generalization gradients, some preferences for unfamiliar stimuli, different speed of learning, faster learning for colors infrequent in the natural spectrum. Generalization was consistent with a Bayesian model that incorporates predispositions as initial preferences and treats the learning process as an update of predispositions. Newborn chicks are evolutionarily prepared for generalization, via biases independent from experience, reinforcement, or supervision. To solve the problem of induction, biological and artificial intelligence can use biases tuned to infrequent stimuli, such as the red and blue colors.

ABSTRACT

Current studies in early cancer detection based on liquid biopsy data often rely on off-the-shelf models and face challenges with heterogeneous data, as well as manually designed data preprocessing pipelines with different parameter settings. To address those challenges, we present AutoCancer, an automated, multimodal, and interpretable transformer-based framework. This framework integrates feature selection, neural architecture search, and hyperparameter optimization into a unified optimization problem with Bayesian optimization. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that AutoCancer achieves accurate performance in specific cancer types and pan-cancer analysis, outperforming existing methods across three cohorts. We further demonstrated the interpretability of AutoCancer by identifying key gene mutations associated with non-small cell lung cancer to pinpoint crucial factors at different stages and subtypes. The robustness of AutoCancer, coupled with its strong interpretability, underscores its potential for clinical applications in early cancer detection.

ABSTRACT

The present research looked for ways to develop shielded nanoparticles (NPs)-drug transporters made of chitosan (CS) to enhance the bioavailability of Edoxaban tosylate monohydrate (ETM) for oral administration by examining the correlation among design aspects and data from experiments using response surface methodology. ETM-loaded CS nanoparticles (ETM-CS-NPs) were developed using the ionic gelation of CS with tripolyphosphate (TPP). Utilizing Zeta-sizer and scanning electron microscopy, the ETM-CS-NPs were evaluated for particle size (PS), zeta potential (ZP), surface morphology, polydispersity index (PDI), entrapment efficiency (EE), and drug loading (DL). Drug and polymer interactions in NPs were assessed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The response surface approach and Design-Expert software optimized the ETM-CS-NPs. Using response surface methodology, the effects of independent variables such as the amount of CS, the amount of TPP, and the amount of glacial acetic acid on PS, PDI, and ZP were analyzed. The optimal combination of PS (354.8 nm), PDI (0.509), ZP (43.7 + mV), % EE (70.3 ± 1.3), and % DL (9.1 ± 0.4) has been identified for the optimized ETM-CS-NPs. ETM-CS-NPs' anticoagulant activity was evaluated using activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), prothrombin time (PT), and thrombin time (TT) assays. In conclusion, a practical and consistent method has been established, and its application has been proven in vitro, indicating its utility for future studies of the biological distribution of ETM-CS-NPs in vivo for specific antithrombotic treatments.
