ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: For centuries, spring and other natural waters have been recommended as external or internal remedies for numerous diseases. For studies that examined the effects of drinking mineral waters against heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or functional dyspepsia, a systematic review is lacking. OBJECTIVES: The main aim of this systematic review was to examine the effects of drinking natural mineral waters on heartburn from various causes by identifying all published intervention studies and critically appraising their methods as well as summarizing their results. METHODS: We systematically searched the largest medical literature database MEDLINE, further relevant web sources, and gray literature for randomized and nonrandomized trials, with or without control groups, up to September 2021 and no language restrictions. Further inclusion criteria were adult patients with heartburn, drinking cure with natural mineral water as the intervention, compared to no or other interventions (care-as-usual, waiting list). We defined the reduction of heartburn symptoms and duration of disease episodes as primary and quality of life as secondary outcomes. Two reviewers independently carried out the study quality assessments (risk of bias) using the National Institutes of Health-Study Quality Assessment Tools. RESULTS: Nine trials comprising 393 patients from Italy, Russia, Ukraine, and Germany fulfilled all inclusion criteria. We identified three randomized controlled trials (all with poor methodological quality), plus six before-after (pre/post) intervention studies without a control group. The intervention groups of the three comparative trials seemed to show a stronger reduction of self-reported heartburn symptoms, and duration of heartburn episodes than the respective control groups; however, they all had poor methodological quality. CONCLUSION: Based on the best available evidence of clinical studies, we cannot recommend or advise against drinking natural mineral waters as a treatment for heartburn. The potential benefits of natural mineral waters that were reported in some studies with a lower evidence level (e.g., lacking a control group) should be verified by good quality randomized clinical trials with adequate comparison groups and longer follow-up periods.HintergrundSeit Jahrhunderten werden Quell- und andere natürliche Wässer als äußerliche oder innerliche Heilmittel für zahlreiche Krankheiten empfohlen. Für Studien, die die Wirkung des Trinkens von Mineralwasser gegen Sodbrennen, gastroösophageale Refluxkrankheit (GERD) oder funktionelle Dyspepsie untersuchten, fehlt eine systematische Übersicht.ZielsetzungDas Hauptziel dieser systematischen Übersichtsarbeit war es, die Auswirkungen von Trinkkuren mit natürlichen Mineralwässern auf Sodbrennen verschiedener Ursachen zu untersuchen, indem alle veröffentlichten Interventionsstudien identifiziert und ihre Methoden kritisch bewertet sowie ihre Ergebnisse zusammengefasst wurden.MethodenWir durchsuchten systematisch die größte medizinische Literaturdatenbank MEDLINE, weitere relevante Internetquellen und graue Literatur nach randomisierten und nicht-randomisierten Studien, mit oder ohne Kontrollgruppen, bis September 2021 und ohne sprachliche Einschränkungen. Wir identifizierten drei randomisierte kontrollierte Studien (alle mit schlechter methodischer Qualität) sowie sechs Vorher-Nachher-Studien (Prä-/Post-Studien) ohne Kontrollgruppe. Die Interventionsgruppen der drei randomisierten Vergleichsstudien schienen eine stärkere Verringerung der selbstberichteten Symptome und der Dauer der Episoden des Sodbrennens zu zeigen als die jeweiligen Kontrollgruppen, allerdings waren sie alle von schlechter methodischer Qualität.SchlussfolgerungAuf der Grundlage der besten verfügbaren Belege aus klinischen Studien können wir das Trinken natürlicher Mineralwässer zur Behandlung von Sodbrennen weder empfehlen noch davon abraten. Die potenziellen Vorteile natürlicher Mineralwässer, die in einigen Studien mit geringerer Evidenz (z. B. ohne Kontrollgruppe) berichtet wurden, sollten durch qualitativ hochwertige randomisierte klinische Studien mit angemessenen Vergleichsgruppen und längeren Nachbeobachtungszeiträumen überprüft werden.

ABSTRACT

This systematic review investigates the potential health and wellness benefits of natural calcium-rich mineral waters. It emphasizes the importance of dietary calcium sourced from natural mineral waters in promoting bone health, maintaining cardiovascular function, aiding in weight management, and enhancing overall well-being. The review process involved the comprehensive analysis of peer-reviewed articles, clinical trials, and experimental studies published within the last decade. Findings reveal that consuming calcium-rich mineral water can contribute significantly to daily calcium intake, particularly for those with lactose intolerance or individuals adhering to plant-based diets. The unique bioavailability of calcium from such waters also appears to enhance absorption, thus potentially offering an advantage over other calcium sources. The potential benefits extend to the cardiovascular system, with some studies indicating a reduction in blood pressure and the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases. Emerging evidence suggests that calcium-rich mineral water might have a role in body weight management, though further research is needed. The review identifies several areas requiring additional research, such as the potential interaction between calcium-rich mineral water and other dietary components, the effects on populations with specific health conditions, and the long-term effects of consumption. In conclusion, natural calcium-rich mineral waters show promise as a readily accessible and bioavailable sources of dietary calcium, potentially beneficial for a broad range of individuals. However, further investigation is required to fully understand its range of health impacts and define optimal intake levels.

ABSTRACT

Natural thermal and mineral waters are widely distributed along the Hellenic region and are related to the geodynamic regime of the country. The diverse lithological and tectonic settings they are found in reflect the great variability in their chemical and isotopic composition. The current study presents 276 (published and unpublished) trace element water data and discusses the sources and processes affecting the water by taking into consideration the framework of their geographic distribution. The dataset is divided in groups using temperature- and pH-related criteria. Results yield a wide range of concentrations, often related to the solubility properties of the individual elements and the factors impacting them (i.e. temperature, acidity, redox conditions and salinity). Many elements (e.g. alkalis, Ti, Sr, As and Tl) present a good correlation with temperature, which is in cases impacted by water rock interactions, while others (e.g. Be, Al, Cu, Se, Cd) exhibit either no relation or an inverse correlation with T possibly because they become oversaturated at higher temperatures in solid phases. A moderately constant inverse correlation is noticed for the vast majority of trace elements and pH, whereas no relationship between trace element concentrations and Eh was found. Seawater contamination and water-rock interaction seem to be the main natural processes that influence both salinity and elemental content. All in all, Greek thermomineral waters exceed occasionally the accepted limits representing in such cases serious harm to the environment and probably indirectly (through the water cycle) to human health.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The phenomenon of therapeutic and prophylactic effect of natural mineral waters (MW) used to restore tissue tolerance to glucose and normalize basal insulin secretion in metabolic syndrome is well known. At the same time, the use of selenium-enriched MW is promising due to its multitarget action including participation in the regulation of the protein-synthesizing function of cells. AIM: To study the effect of internal course intake of selenium-modified mineral waters of different composition on bone mineral density after long-term diet-induced metabolic disorders in the experiment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was carried out on outbred male white rats that were distributed into 3 control groups (CG) and 4 main groups (MG). In CG1 14 animals received laboratory food and drinking water; in CG2 14 animals were modeled for diet-induced metabolic disorders, and they were withdrawn from the experiment the day after the cancellation of the hypercaloric diet (180 days); after the cancellation of the hypercaloric diet 180 days later 14 animals with diet-induced metabolic disorders in CG3 had a standard diet (laboratory food and drinking water) for 30 days. In the experimental groups (EG), the animals similarly to CG3 were modeled diet-induced metabolic disorders, after the cancellation of the diet they had a standard diet and watering with MW. In MG1 18 animals were given MW1 (Essentuki-4); in MG2 19 animals had a course of MW1Se (Essentuki-4 enriched with selenium); in MG3 14 animals had a course of MW2 (Slavyanovskaya); in MG4 18 animals had a course of MB2Se (Slavyanovskaya enriched with selenium). The weight (body weight) of the animals was monitored monthly. Biochemical studies, densitometry and computed microtomography were used to determine the effectiveness of MW. RESULTS: The characteristics of spongy bone tissue of femoral metaphysis of the rats of the control groups revealed disorders of varying degrees, but, despite this, the bone tissue structure of the examined vertebral bodies in animals without a hyper caloric diet (CG1) was preserved. The analysis of the study results demonstrated a significant effectiveness of selenium-enriched MW in regulating metabolic processes (p<0.05-p<0.01), bone mineral density (p<0.05), reduced bone resorption (p<0.05), that is, the characteristics of spongy bone tissue of femoral metaphysis and vertebral bodies of animals showed a clear tendency to restore bone structure. CONCLUSION: The results of this study make it possible to predict an increase in the effectiveness of medical rehabilitation of patients with somatic diseases when selenium-enriched MW is included in the programmes.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of the preventive course of drinking mineral water enriched with selenium on the processes of resistance to the damaging action of reversible occlusion of the anterior mesenteric artery based on the comparison of intestinal morphological changes in the experiment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: There has been modeled ischemic reperfusion injury of the intestinal wall according to H. Ikeda and co-authors using reversible occlusion of the anterior mesenteric artery with 33 outbred male rats. The rats were divided into four groups by block randomization: the 1st group - intact animals (n=7) - without an exposure; the control group - sham operated animals (n=6); the group of comparison (n=7) - with a model-operation; the experimental group (n=11) - animals with a model operation that had courses of intragastric watering of bottled sulfate-chloride-hydrocarbonate-sodium low-mineralized (2.2 g/l) drinking mineral water «Psyzh¼ enriched with selenium. Biopsies of the small intestine were taken for histological examination. RESULTS: Histological examination of the small intestine of experimental animals determines various degrees of severity of damage: on average, the animals of the experimental group on the scale of C.J. Chiu (1970) had the lowest degree of severity of pathological changes, the animals of the group of comparison - 1.4 times higher (p=0.02). That is, the effect of a preventive course of mineral water «Psyzh¼ enriched with selenium was manifested in the formation of resistance to the damaging effect of reversible occlusion of the anterior mesenteric artery; in the presence of ischemic reperfusion damage to the intestinal wall, comparable in severity to changes with the animals without prevention, the most significant positive effect was realized in the containment of reactive changes. CONCLUSION: The effect of the preventive course of drinking mineral water «Psyzh¼ enriched with selenium manifested itself in the formation of resistance to the damaging effect of reversible occlusion of the anterior mesenteric artery, which is the basis for introducing this technique into clinical practice in order to prevent the development of reperfusion injuries of the intestine.

ABSTRACT

The continental subsurface harbors microbial populations highly enriched in uncultured taxa. OPB41 is an uncultured order-level phylogenetic lineage within the actinobacterial class Coriobacteriia. OPB41 bacteria have a wide geographical distribution, but the physiology and metabolic traits of this cosmopolitan group remain elusive. From two contrasting subsurface environments, a terrestrial mud volcano and a deep subsurface aquifer, located in the central part of Eurasia, within the Caucasus petroleum region, we have isolated two pure cultures of anaerobic actinobacteria belonging to OPB41. The cells of both strains are small non-motile rods forming numerous pili-like appendages. Strain M08DHBT is mesophilic, while strain Es71-Z0120T is a true thermophile having a broad temperature range for growth (25-77°C). Strain M08DHBT anaerobically reduces sulfur compounds and utilizes an aromatic compound 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid. Strain Es71-Z0120T is an obligate dissimilatory Fe(III) reducer that is unable to utilize aromatic compounds. Both isolates grow lithotrophically and consume molecular hydrogen or formate using either thiosulfate, elemental sulfur, or Fe(III) as an electron acceptor. Genomes of the strains encode the putative reductive glycine pathway for autotrophic CO2 fixation, Ni-Fe hydrogenases, putative thiosulfate/polysulfide reductases, and multiheme c-type cytochromes presumably involved in dissimilatory Fe(III) reduction. We propose to assign the isolated strains to the novel taxa of the species-order levels and describe strain M08DHBT as Anaerosoma tenue gen. nov., sp. nov., and strain Es71-Z0120T as Parvivirga hydrogeniphila gen. nov., sp. nov., being members of Anaerosomatales ord. nov. This work expands the knowledge of the diversity, metabolic functions, and ecological role of the phylum Actinomycetota.

ABSTRACT

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) represents one of the greatest challenges to public health given its serious consequences on cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. A carbohydrate-restricted, low-fat diet is the current therapy for MetS. Natural mineral waters (NMWs) are known to exert beneficial effects on human health. Our primary objective was to shed light on the potential therapeutic properties of NMWs in MetS. A total of 125 C57BL/6 male and female mice were included in the study. Of these, 10 were left untreated. They were fed a standard diet with tap water throughout the study period, and stayed healthy. The remaining 115 mice were initially fed a high-calorie diet (HCD) consisting of a high-fat feed (60% of energy from fat) with 10% fructose in tap water, served ad libitum over a period of 4 months to induce MetS (the MetS induction phase). Mice were then randomly divided into six treatment groups and a control group, all of which received a low-calorie diet (LCD), but with a different kind of drinking water, for 2 months (the treatment phase). Five groups were each treated with a different kind of NMW, one group by alternating the five NMWs, and one group - the control group - was given tap water. Body weight and blood biochemistry were monitored over the 6-month trial. After 4 months, male and female mice on HCD developed obesity, hypercholesterolaemia and hyperglycaemia, although gains in body weight, total cholesterol, and blood glucose in males were greater than those observed in females (P < 0.0001). When combined with an LCD, the NMWs rich in sulphate, magnesium and bicarbonate, and the minimally mineralised one were the most effective in reducing the blood levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and glucose. Sex differences emerged during both the MetS induction phase and the treatment phase. These results suggest that NMWs rich in specific macronutrients, such as bicarbonate, sulphate and magnesium, and minimally mineralised water, in combination with an LCD, may contribute to controlling blood lipid and glucose levels in subjects with MetS. Further studies are needed to confirm these results and to extend them to humans.

ABSTRACT

The method for determination of rare earth elements (REE: La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) total concentrations in mineral waters was developed and validated. The proposed method comprised inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) detection and the 10-fold off-line REE preconcentration. To improve the method sensitivity and selectivity, the major matrix components and elements causing severe spectral interferences (Ba and Sr) were removed by the seaFAST-pico chromatographic system. The assessed method performance characteristics showed low detection limits (0.02 ng/L-0.3 ng/L), high elements recoveries (98% ± 4%), good repeatability (3%-5%), and satisfactory uncertainties (8%-16%). The method usability was confirmed via analysis of available reference materials with different water matrices (SLRS-5, SLRS-6, CASS-5, SERMIN1, and VIDAC18) and natural mineral waters originated either directly from wells or bottles sold in supermarkets.

ABSTRACT

Balneotherapy, a branch of physical and rehabilitation medicine using the natural factors of balneal resorts for therapeutical purposes to modulate the symptoms of numerous diseases, represents a non-pharmaceutical therapeutic alternative, easily accepted by patients and used both preventively and curatively. Crenotherapy, a branch of balneotherapy, is the method in which mineral waters are used as a therapeutic internal cure by ingestion. This procedure is performed in spa resorts (where these natural resources exist), and the ingestion of mineral water takes place at the source (spring), in the quantities recommended by the medical rehabilitation physician, according to specific regimens for the condition to be treated. Depending on their physical and chemical composition, the therapeutic mineral waters fall into several categories, having clear indications for certain pathologies. Hypotonic, isotonic, or slightly hypertonic mineral waters are recommended in diseases of the digestive tract and hepatobiliary conditions. Over time, studies have been conducted to determine the effect of these types of treatments, highlighting the complex influence of crenotherapy on the gastrointestinal tract, with favorable results, therefore the use of mineral water intake in various pathologies being recommended. The current review focuses on the existing literature data and refers to the main progress made in understanding the benefit, indications, and crenotherapy procedures in the management of gastrointestinal disorders.

ABSTRACT

Balneotherapy (BT) is one of the most commonly used non-pharmacologic complementary therapies for different rheumatic diseases. Its beneficial properties probably derived from a combination of mechanical, thermal, and chemical effects, but the exact mechanism of action is not elucidated. This review aimed at summarizing the current knowledge about the effects of BT, and identifying its possible mechanism of action in different rheumatic diseases. Pubmed and Scopus were used to perform a search of the literature to extract articles including terms related to BT and rheumatic diseases published in the period from 2010 to 2021. We selected pre-clinical studies, randomized controlled trials, and clinical trials. The results of clinical studies confirmed the beneficial properties on different mediators and factors of inflammation, oxidative stress, cartilage metabolism, and humoral and cellular immune responses in patients affected by chronic degenerative musculoskeletal disorders. The data derived from OA and RA-induced murine models revealed the efficacy of different BT treatments in decreasing pain, inflammation, and improving mobility, as well as in reducing the expression of matrix-degrading enzymes and markers of oxidative stress damage. Different in vitro studies analyzed the potential effect of a mineral water, as a whole, or of a mineral element, demonstrating their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and chondroprotective properties in OA cartilage, synoviocytes and chondrocytes, and osteoblast and osteoclast cultures. The presented data are promising and confirm BT as an effective complementary approach in the management of several low-grade inflammation, degenerative, and stress-related pathologies, as rheumatic diseases.

The study deals with the analyses of springs and wells at the base of Montepugliano Hill that represents the SE edge of the wide carbonate Matese massif (Campania, southern Italy). At the base of the hill, from west to east and for almost one kilometre, cold springs HCO3-Ca type (Grassano springs, ~ 4.5 m3/s; TDS: about 0.45 g/L) pass to hypothermal, HCO3-Ca type, sulphurous and CO2-rich springs (~ 1 m3/s with TDS > 1 g/L). Some of the latter are widely used in Telese Spa and Centro Relax Spa. Chemical and isotopic analyses carried out for this study support the hypothesis that all these waters (mineral and non-mineral) have the same catchment area, which is located in the Matese massif. As regards the sulphurous springs, they receive both meteoric waters infiltration and uprising of deeper waters rich in endogenous CO2 and H2S gases through important faults systems. Far from these faults, the chemistry of groundwater is scarcely (or not at all) affected by these deep fluid enrichment processes. This scheme is very significant; in fact, when very important groundwater resources are present, it is possible to use both mineral waters in Spa and, in areas far from the faults, those not yet mineralized. Finally, at Montepugliano Hill, in the final stage of the flow path, groundwater is also affected by change in the microbiome: this could provide a basis for comparison between various mineral waters.

ABSTRACT

The article is devoted to the use of drinking mineral waters in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with various pathologies. The results of numerous studies carried out in previous years have proven the ability of mineral waters to positively influence the functional state of the digestive system, eliminate various metabolic disorders, and affect the processes of hormonal and immune regulation. However, due to the current lack of educational programs for the training of doctors at medical universities, as well as further training in the basics of balneology, medical workers often encounter difficulties in determining the most suitable schemes for the use of mineral waters for a specific pathology. It is known that today there are quite a lot of bottled waters on the market that do not have a healing effect, but are quite suitable for use as table waters. The latter circumstance, combined with not always correct information about the real healing properties of waters, creates certain difficulties even for doctors. In addition, there is a need for a certain clarification of the methods of prescribing mineral waters, taking into account the magnitude of mineralization, the main cation-anionic composition, the nature of the disease and the phase of its course. Taking into account the fact that drinking mineral waters are actively used in the treatment of many diseases, including in children and the elderly, the task of fully and competently informing doctors of different specialties, and with their help, patients, about the features of specific mineral waters available in different regions of the Russian Federation, their unique capabilities, optimal methods of therapeutic use.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) results from loss of cartilage in-tegrity in association with changes to the structure of the entire joint. Treatment of OA is based on different pharmaceutical and no phar-maceutical approaches and the latter include the use of spa-therapy. The biological effects of mud-bath therapy are mainly secondary to heat stimulation and to physic-chemical properties of mineral waters and mud-packs. Mud-bath therapy likely exerts its effects modulating several cytokines and other molecules involved in inflammation and cartilage degradation. Our aim was to perform an updated meta-analysis of the effectiveness of the mud-bath therapy on knee osteoarthritis and briefly to discuss the mechanisms of action of this treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A MEDLINE on PubMed for articles on knee OA and spa therapy published from 1995 through up to April 2019 was performed. Then, we checked the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials to find additional references included up to April 2019. Articles were included if in accordance with the eligibility cri-teria. Sample size and effect sizes were processed with the MedCalc software package. RESULTS: Twenty one studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in meta-analysis. We examined WOMAC Index and VAS pain. We found significant improvements in function scores and painful symptoms after mud-bath therapy in patients with knee joint osteoarthritis. CONCLUSIONS: Spa therapy is a non-drug treatment modalities, non invasive, complication-free, and cost-effective alternative modality for the conservative treatment of knee osteoarthritis. It cannot substitute for conventional therapy but can integrated or alternated to it. Treatment with mud-bath therapy may relieve pain, stiffness and improve functio-nal status in patients with knee OA.

ABSTRACT

Purpose of the study. To carry out a comparative analysis of the intake effect of mineral waters (MW) of various physicochemical compositions, including those ones enriched in selenium, on the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome (MS) in the experiment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The experiment was carried out on 68 male white rats aged 3 months, which were divided into 5 groups. Control groups: CG1 - 10 animals without exposure; CG2 - 14 animals with MS, received only drinking water. Experimental groups: EG1 - 14 rats with MS, received MW1 of chloride-sulfate sodium composition (Ivanovo region); EG2 - 15 animals, received MW2 of chloride-hydrocarbonate-sodium composition (Essentuki No. 4); EG3 - 15 animals, received MW2 enriched with selenium. MS was modeled by double injection of streptozotocin, intraperitoneally, 30 µg/kg, after 60 days of finding the animals on a hypercaloric diet. RESULTS: According to the oral glucose tolerance test (GTT) in animals with MS, two variants of the glycemic response were identified, according to which two subgroups (SG) were identified in each group. In the 1st SG CG2 and EG1-3, a moderate increase in glucose at the 60th minute of GTT was revealed, which was 1.2 times higher than the glucose level at the 60th minute in CG1. In SG 2, an increase in glucose was noted at the 60th minute by 2.5-5.0 times, by the 120th minute of GTG the glucose level was higher than in CG1. In animals CG2, there was no decrease in glucose by the 120th minute, in contrast to EG1-3. The activity of blood α-amylase increased by 2 times was determined in animals CG2 compared to CG1, and in groups EG1 and EG2 the level of its activity approached the level of CG1. CONCLUSION: In animals with MS, a decrease in the sensitivity of ß-cells to the stimulating effect of glucose and the involvement of the exocrine pancreas in the pathological process was determined. Under the influence of therapeutic course drinking MW of different physicochemical composition in animals with MS in the experiment, the sensitivity of tissues to the stimulating hyperglycemic signal was restored to varying degrees and the increased activity of blood α-amylase decreased.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is a widespread pathological condition, a group of interconnected metabolic disorders that contribute to the development of a number of severe noncommunicable diseases. Natural mineral waters of various compositions are widely used in the correction of MS. Their biological activity and specificity of action is associated with the presence of specific components (micronutrients, biologically active substances). At the same time, many researchers do not pay enough attention to the role of the biological activity of macro nutrients in low mineralized mineral waters. OBJECTIVE: To assess the corrective effect of macro-components of mineral waters based on a comparative analysis of changes in the structure of internal organs of white rats with the MS model, receiving mineral waters of the same balneological type, but with different quantitative composition of macro components. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The material for histological and histochemical tests were the internal organs of male white rats with body weight 280-320 g. Animals were ranked into 4 groups: I - rats served as a control, ӀӀ - rats with a model of MS; ӀӀӀ and ӀV - rats received the mineral waters against the background of MS modeling. The mineral waters used in the work were characterized by an increased (in close amounts) content of organic substances (C org.), similar in chemical but different in quantitative macro-component composition. At the same time, mineral waters practically did not differ in terms of total mineralization. Modeling of MS was carried out for 60 days by replacing 10% fructose solution in drinking water bowls, introducing white bread crackers into the diet, and excluding green mass from the diet. In groups where animals were corrected for MS, mineral waters were administered with an intragastric tube with olive at a dose of 1% of body weight daily, starting from the 60th day of the experiment, for 12 days. Upon completion of the experiment on day 72, histological sections (which were stained with hematoxylin-eosin) were prepared from the extracted pieces of the heart, stomach, liver and kidneys tissues. The succinate-dehydrogenase (SDH) and lactate-dehydrogenase (LDH) activity were determined on the prepared cryostat sections. Using a light microscope, changes in the structure of the above organs and changes in the activity of oxidative-restorative enzymes were evaluated. RESULTS: The activity of oxidative-restorative enzymes was approaching normal; some manifestations of changes in water metabolism in the animal organism persisted. At the end of the use of both mineral waters, a significant decrease was found in the content of visceral fat around the intestines, renal capsule, under the pericardium, which correlated with a decrease in the animal's body weight and restoration of the fasting blood glucose level to the cereal level. The authors believe that the established features of the corrective effect of both mineral waters on changes in the structure of internal organs are explained not so much by the difference in the content and ratio of the bioactive component (C org.), but by differences in the content of macronutrients. In mineral waters obtained by rats of group III, the content of Cl- and SO4+2 ions is 2.30 and 3.67 times, and Ca2+ and Мg2+ ions are 2.75 and 4.57 more than in mineral waters, which received rats of group IV. However, the content of HCO3-, Na+, K+ is 1.14 and 1.30 times higher in the mineral waters obtained by rats of group IV. CONCLUSIONS: The authors believe that the macronutrients involved in the implementation of MWs biological activity affect the metabolic background of the organism, which creates the bioactive element - C org. conditions for the performance of more intensive corrective action.

RESUMEN San Miguel de los Baños surgió y se desarrolló gracias a sus aguas mineromedicinales. Con el objetivo de determinar el origen, estudio y caracterización de estas se realiza revisión bibliográfica, mediante la consulta de bibliografías y documentos históricos recopilados; la información se buscó sin restricción de fecha de publicación, por descriptores, en bases de datos de la Biblioteca Virtual de Salud y por Google, en pos de hallar publicaciones, artículos y archivos que contuvieran en las palabras clave, determinándose que en los momentos fundacionales y durante el funcionamiento del balneario se realizaron estudios de caracterización, uso y terapéutica de las aguas provenientes de los manantiales: "El Tigre" y "La Salud"; desde 1962 no se brinda atención médica, desde 1984 a la fecha solo constan estudios geo- mineros, físico-químicos y bacteriológicos. La población local hace uso de estas aguas sin indicación, dosis y registro. No se han publicado estudios basados en la evidencia necesarios para la prescripción actual (AU).


Summary San Miguel de los Baños was founded and developed thanks to its mineral- medicinal waters. A bibliographic review was carried out with the objective of determining the origin, study and characterization of these waters consulting bibliography and historical documents, searching information without publishing date restriction, using descriptors in databases of the Virtual Health Library and Google for publications, articles and files having the used key words. The authors arrived to the conclusion that in the times of foundation and during the years of the spa functioning, there were carried out studies on characterization, use and therapeutic of the waters running from the springs "El Tigre" and "La Salud"; medical care is not provided since 1962; only geo-mining, physic-chemical and bacteriological studies were carried out from 1984 up to the date. Local population uses the waters without prescription, doses or recording. No evidence-based studies were published for their current prescription (AU).

ABSTRACT

The article is devoted to the history of the creation and establishment of the Far Eastern resort «Talaya¼, located in the Far North of Russia, in the Magadan Region among the hills of the Kolyma Range, in the valley of the Talaya River. A historical essay is presented from 1868 to the present days, including periods of the resort's development at various stages of Russia's formation (pre-revolutionary, post-revolutionary periods, the era of developed socialism, present times). The contribution of resort doctors, geologists, employees of research institutes to the study of the mechanism of action and clinical effectiveness of the use of Tal mineral water is described. The balneological characteristic of nitrogen-siliceous thermal water, the main therapeutic factor of the Talaya resort, is given. Currently, the Talaya sanatorium is providing the treatment of patients with diseases of the skin, musculoskeletal system, gynecological, neurological diseases, diseases of the digestive system, metabolism, upper respiratory tract, cardiovascular system, occupational diseases using balneotherapy, mud therapy and others methods of non-drug therapy. Hundreds of thousands of northerners were healed by the Kolyma health resort, which gained fame as the «Northern Pearl¼. Today, during the reorganization of health care, the Talaya sanatorium is going through a difficult but interesting period in improving the possibilities of healing the inhabitants of the northern regions of Russia.

ABSTRACT

Balneotherapy (BT) is one of the most commonly used complementary therapies for many pathological conditions. Its beneficial effects are related to physical and chemical factors, but the exact mechanism of action is not fully understood. Recently, there has been an increased interest in the use of preclinical models to investigate the influence of BT on inflammation, immunity, and cartilage and bone metabolism. The objective of this comprehensive analysis was to summarize the current knowledge about the in vitro studies in BT and to revise the obtained results on the biological effects of mineral waters. Special attention has been paid to the main rheumatological and dermatological conditions, and to the regulation of the immune response. The objective of this review was to summarize the in vitro studies, on human and animal samples, investigating the biological effects of BT. In particular, we analyzed the properties of a thermal water, as a whole, of an inorganic molecule, such as hydrogen sulfide in different cell cultures (keratinocytes, synoviocytes, chondrocytes, and peripheral blood cells), or of the organic component. The results corroborated the scientific value of in vitro studies in demonstrating the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, chondroprotective, and immunosuppressive role of BT at the cellular level. However, the validity of the cell culture model is limited by several sources of bias, as the differences in experimental procedures, the high heterogeneity among the available researches, and the difficulties in considering all the chemical and physical factors of BT. We would like to stimulate the scientific community to standardize the experimental procedures and enhance in vitro research in the field of BT.

ABSTRACT

O presente artigo de revisão relata os dados científicos disponíveis sobre a água termal La Roche-Posay e esclarece seus mecanismos de ação, suas indicações e seus benefícios clínicos. Além disso, estudos clínicos e avaliação genômica do microbioma da pele demonstraram que esta água termal melhora a diversidade do microbioma da pele e reduz a gravidade das lesões cutâneas em dermatoses inflamatórias, tais como dermatite atópica e psoríase. Justifica-se, portanto, o uso de água rica em selênio em formulações tópicas na prevenção ou tratamento de doenças de pele e como coadjuvante para aumentar a qualidade de vida dos pacientes dermatológicos.


This review article reports the scientific data available on La Roche-Posay thermal water and clarifies its mechanisms of action, indications, and clinical benefits. Clinical studies and genomic evaluation of the skin microbiome have shown that La Roche-Posay thermal water improves the skin microbiome's diversity and reduces the severity of skin lesions in inflammatory dermatoses, such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Therefore, it justifies the use of selenium-rich water in topical formulations to prevent or treat skin diseases and as an adjunct to increase dermatological patients' quality of life
