ABSTRACT

Inclusive education represents one of the most challenging aspects of modern education. In recent years, a major challenge in achieving inclusivity in education has been to find modern tools that might adapt the teaching process to the needs of children with disabilities. This article investigates the possibility to use virtual reality (VR) technology to improve the learning process of children with disabilities. In this regard, a qualitative study based on the Focus Group method was conducted among 31 specialists who work with children with disabilities, with the aim of identifying potential opportunities and limits of using VR technology in the education of this category of children. The research results reveal that for most of the interviewees the VR application was a new experience; they appreciated that this technology could improve the educational process for children with disabilities and it could become a useful tool to support the education of such children. These results could have a positive impact on the activities carried out by policymakers, academia, and the economic environment in their efforts to implement policies aimed at improving the inclusive education system. To this end, some VR applications could be developed in a collaborative system involving IT companies and universities in the designing and implementation of these applications.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The complex changes in vascular surgical teaching and commonalities are to be outlined and discussed, in particular, similarities/differences to general surgery, specifics of teaching/teaching content and its university requirements. METHOD: Compact narrative overview RESULTS: Vascular surgical teaching component at Magdeburg University Hospital comprises 10 academic teaching hours and includes the following topics: PAD, embolism/thrombosis, vascular injury, compartment syndrome, mesenteric ischemia, aortic aneurysm and venous surgery. This puts vascularsurgical teaching here well above the average of 6.1 academic teaching hours in Germany. The strength of (vascular)surgical training lies in the fact that the knowledge gained at the bedside can be linked to visual impressions and simultaneous explanations in the operating theatre. Close integration of the student into the team is the high art of promoting acceptance of surgery as a profession and vocation. The prerequisites for successful teaching are a didactically competent teacher with specialist expertise, a proactive teaching attitude, knowledge of the specific learning objectives, the curriculum, modern teaching methods and awareness of the special role model function for students. Classical teaching by means of lecture, seminar, practical course and textbook is justified and should be strengthened but it is increasingly supplemented by the use of internet-based learning platforms, libraries and video portals. CONCLUSION: In the coming years, vascular surgical teaching will (have to) shift to a (rather) multimodal/-media approach with more practice-oriented components and intensive integration of students into everyday clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Case-based learning (CBL) is an established bidirectional active learning approach where students learn concepts by solving cases or problems under the guidance of a facilitator. In the present study, the awareness and acceptance level of faculties to implement this method of teaching were assessed by behavioral analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was done through two workshops organized at NDRI Karnal on December 16 and 17, 2019, and BHU Varanasi on March 1, 2020. Fifty-four faculties from different applied sciences participated. The participants were given an insight into this teaching tool through didactic lecture and hands-on training session about implementation of this method. Pre and post- session responses were compared through a set of questionnaires and the behavioral change was analyzed by using SPSS version 22. P ≤ 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. RESULTS: Only 31.5% faculties were aware of the active learning methods though 83% agreed that active learning is better than conventional teaching. 96% agreed that CBL is a better way to develop concepts and nearly 81% agreed that more learning could be done with lesser efforts. The clinical decision-making improve significantly. Pre and post-session mean scores of effectiveness of CBL as a teaching tool were 2.44 ± 0.63 and 2.72 ± 0.53, respectively. CONCLUSION: CBL originally is a mode of imparting knowledge in a student-centric bimodal learning. Acceptance to the mode is increasing among faculties despite of many deterrents.

ABSTRACT

One of the main goals in academia is, and has been, high quality education of students to provide theoretical and practical knowledge essential for professional life. Achieving this goal is highly dependent on teaching procedures and, consequently, on a constant adaptation of teaching styles to align to technical advances and cutting-edge topics. Technical advances can strongly influence teaching and learning in the complex subject area of veterinary parasitology. Today's students are provided with extensive, digital lecture notes, and e-learning offers including virtual microscope technology to independently obtain intensified theoretical knowledge and understanding. As veterinary parasitology is also highly reliant on proficient practical skills, lectures with integrated diagnostic exercises are mandatory. Nowadays, such practical skills, such as carrying out faecal examination procedures, can be strengthened by having access to clinical skills labs. Advances such as digital lecture notes, e-learning and virtual microscopes do not only provide new, innovative opportunities, but can also comprise challenges. In this context, provision of sufficient relevant studying material may discourage students to take on responsibilities for autonomous gathering of information. Besides technical advances, 'Zeitgeist' changes are shaping teaching contents, which are progressively expanding as zoonoses are increasingly being focused on. With the aim of adopting the one-health concept, students today are expected not only to bear responsibilities for animals, but also for their owners and public health. This article will cast light on some key challenges and opportunities in modern veterinary parasitology teaching from the teachers´ and the students´ perspectives.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This article aims to identify representations about the global method of literacy through short stories, analyzing the role of reading in the process of renewal of teaching practices and the establishment of pedagogical modernity. Taking the newspaper 'Gazeta do Norte' as a document source, we found that the city of Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, joined the Francisco Campos Reform (1927-1928) which imposed the global method of short storiesto teach how to read and write based on the understanding of texts not only in the memorization of linguistic units. The disseminated speeches also indicate that reading teaching should enable research, reflection and language use in different communicative situations.
