ABSTRACT

Os dentistas são um grupo de alto risco para o desenvolvimento de doenças de desordens musculoesqueléticas e tendo em vista que o sistema de produção industrial desenvolve produtos que atendem a maioria da população destra, os estudantes canhotos precisam se adequar a uma formação acadêmica, usando instrumentais, cadeiras odontológicas eoutros objetos projetados para destros. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo a coletade informações sobre os canhotos nos cursos de Odontologia da cidade de Uberlândia ­Minas Gerais. Foram incluídos todos os alunos canhotos matriculados no ano de 2022 e que estavam cursando ou já cursaram disciplinas com atividades laboratoriais ou clínicas. Questionários foram aplicados para identificação do perfil, das dificuldades, da ergonomia e das dores osteomusculares dos alunos canhotos em suas atividades. Os dados foram em seguida tabulados e passaram por análise estatística. Da quantidade total de alunos das três instituições (n=1.578), foram entrevistados 45 (2,8%) alunos canhotos, sendo a maioria feminina (80%), na qual identificou-se um posicionamento inadequado do operador canhoto quando comparado ao preconizado pela ISO-FDI, além da limitação de movimento na presença de auxiliar (82,2%). Os locais com maior frequência de dor/desconforto foram: pescoço (79%), costas superior esquerda (63%) e inferior esquerda (61%) e punhos/ mãos esquerda (56%). A intensidade da dor variou entre alguma, moderada e bastante. O impedimento de realizar atividades diárias foi relatado por 17% dos alunos (n=7) e destes somente 1 buscou atendimento médico. Não houve diferença estatística na comparação entre instituição pública e privada. Diante dos resultados, concluiu-se que os canhotos representam minoria dos alunos de Odontologia e apresentam várias regiões de dor/ desconforto devido às adaptações e posturas erradas durante os atendimentos. Apesar de grande parte apresentar dor, poucos tiveram impedimento de atividades rotineiras ou procuraram ajuda médica(AU)


Dentists are a high risk group for the development of musculoskeletal disorders and considering that the industrial production system develops products that serve the majority of the right-handed population, lefthanded students need to adapt to an academic training, using instruments, dental chairs and other objects designed for right-handers. This study aimed to collect information about left-handers in Dentistry courses in the city of Uberlândia - Minas Gerais. All left- handed students enrolled in the year 2022 and who were taking or had taken courses with laboratory or clinical activities were included. Questionnaires were applied to identify the profile, difficulties, ergonomics and musculoskeletal pain of left-handed students in their activities. The data were tabulated and then undergo statistical analysis. Of the total number of students from the three institutions (n=1,578), 45 (2.8%) left-handed students were interviewed, the majority being female (80%), in which an inadequate positioning of the left-handed operator was identified when compared to the recommended one by ISO-FDI, in addition to limitation of movement in the presence of an assistant (82.2%). The places with the highest frequency of pain/discomfort were: neck (79%), upper left back (63%) and lower left back (61%) and left wrists/hands (56%). The intensity of pain varied between some, moderate and a lot. The impediment to carrying out daily activities was reported by 17% of the students (n=7) and of these, only 1 sought medical attention. There was no statistical difference when comparing public and private institutions. In view of the results, it was concluded that left-handers represent a minority of dentistry students and have several regions of pain/discomfort due to adaptations and wrong postures during consultations. Although most of them had pain, few were prevented from performing routine activities or sought medical help(AU)

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To develop and validate prediction models for the risk of future work absence and level of presenteeism, in adults seeking primary healthcare with musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). METHODS: Six studies from the West-Midlands/Northwest regions of England, recruiting adults consulting primary care with MSD were included for model development and internal-external cross-validation (IECV). The primary outcome was any work absence within 6 months of their consultation. Secondary outcomes included 6-month presenteeism and 12-month work absence. Ten candidate predictors were included: age; sex; multisite pain; baseline pain score; pain duration; job type; anxiety/depression; comorbidities; absence in the previous 6 months; and baseline presenteeism. RESULTS: For the 6-month absence model, 2179 participants (215 absences) were available across five studies. Calibration was promising, although varied across studies, with a pooled calibration slope of 0.93 (95% CI: 0.41-1.46) on IECV. On average, the model discriminated well between those with work absence within 6 months, and those without (IECV-pooled C-statistic 0.76, 95% CI: 0.66-0.86). The 6-month presenteeism model, while well calibrated on average, showed some individual-level variation in predictive accuracy, and the 12-month absence model was poorly calibrated due to the small available size for model development. CONCLUSIONS: The developed models predict 6-month work absence and presenteeism with reasonable accuracy, on average, in adults consulting with MSD. The model to predict 12-month absence was poorly calibrated and is not yet ready for use in practice. This information may support shared decision-making and targeting occupational health interventions at those with a higher risk of absence or presenteeism in the 6 months following consultation. Further external validation is needed before the models' use can be recommended or their impact on patients can be fully assessed.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The belief that cannabis has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties continues to attract patients with chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain towards its use. However, the role that cannabis will play in the management of chronic MSK pain remains to be determined. This study examined 1) the rate, patterns of use, and self-reported efficacy of cannabis use among patients with chronic MSK pain and 2) the interest and potential barriers to cannabis use among patients with chronic MSK pain not currently using cannabis. METHODS: Self-reported cannabis use and perceived efficacy were prospectively collected from chronic MSK pain patients presenting to the Orthopaedic Clinic at the University Health Network, Toronto, Canada. The primary dependent variable was current or past use of cannabis to manage chronic MSK pain; bivariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to identify patient characteristics independently associated with this outcome. Secondary outcomes were summarized descriptively, including self-perceived efficacy among cannabis users, and interest as well as barriers to cannabis use among cannabis non-users. RESULTS: The sample included 629 patients presenting with chronic MSK pain (mean age: 56±15.7 years; 56% female). Overall, 144 (23%) reported past or present cannabis use to manage their MSK pain, with 63.7% perceiving cannabis as very or somewhat effective and 26.6% considering it as slightly effective. The strongest predictor of cannabis use in this study population was a history of recreational cannabis use (OR 12.7, p<0.001). Among cannabis non-users (N=489), 65% expressed interest in using cannabis to manage their chronic MSK pain, but common barriers to use included lack of knowledge regarding access, use and evidence, and stigma. CONCLUSIONS: One in five patients presenting to an orthopaedic surgeon with chronic MSK pain are using or have used cannabis with the specific intent to manage their pain, and most report it to be effective. Among non-users, two-thirds reported an interest in using cannabis to manage their MSK pain, but common barriers to use existed. Future double-blind placebo-controlled trials are required to understand if this reported efficacy is accurate, and what role, if any, cannabis may play in the management of chronic MSK pain.

ABSTRACT

The application of ultrasound (US) in pain medicine has been a rapidly growing field since the 2000s. Musculoskeletal injections, peripheral nerve blocks, and neuraxial injections under US guidance have been acknowledged for managing chronic pain. Although many studies on US-guided pain procedures have been published, there needs to be a classification system to evaluate which image device, the US or fluoroscopy, is clinically and technically better in various pain interventions. Therefore, this narrative review introduces the classification system for the US-guided pain procedures according to their clinical and technical outcomes and designates US-guided pain procedures into one of the four categories by reviewing previous prospective randomized comparative trials.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the current evidence comparing low level to high level laser therapy to reveal any superiorities in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. METHODS: Five databases were searched till September 2022 to obtain relevant RCTs comparing high intensity and low-level laser therapies in the management of musculoskeletal disorders. Two authors assessed the methodological quality of the included studies using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale and meta-analysis was conducted for studies that showed homogeneity. RESULTS: Twelve articles were included in this systematic review with a total population of 704 participants across various musculoskeletal pathologies including tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic non-specific low back pain, knee arthritis, plantar fasciitis, and subacromial impingement. There were no statistical differences between the two interventions in pain, electrophysiological parameters, level of disability, quality of life, postural sway or pressure algometer, however, Low level laser therapy showed superiority in increasing grip strength compared to high intensity laser therapy while results were significant in favour of high intensity laser therapy regarding long head of biceps diameter and cross sectional area, supraspinatus thickness and echogenicity and acromio-humeral distance. CONCLUSION: The current literature suggests no superiority of both types of laser therapy in musculoskeletal disorders, however, more RCTs with larger sample size are required to reach a definitive conclusion regarding the superiority of either form of laser therapy in musculoskeletal disorders.

ABSTRACT

Osteoporosis, vertebral fractures, and spinal degenerative diseases are common conditions that often coexist in older adults. This study aimed to determine the factors influencing low back pain and its impact on activities of daily living (ADL) and physical performance in older individuals with multiple comorbidities. This cross-sectional study was part of a large-scale population-based cohort study in Japan, involving 1009 participants who underwent spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess cervical cord compression, radiographic lumbar spinal stenosis, and lumbar disc degeneration. Vertebral fractures in the thoracolumbar spine were evaluated using sagittal MRI with a semi-quantitative method. Bone mineral density was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Low back pain, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and physical performance tests, such as one-leg standing time, five times chair-stand time, maximum walking speed, and maximum step length, were assessed. Using clinical conditions as objective variables and image evaluation parameters as explanatory variables, multiple regression analysis showed that vertebral fractures were significantly associated with low back pain and ODI. Vertebral fractures and osteoporosis significantly impacted physical performance, whereas osteoporosis alone did not affect low back pain or ODI. Our findings contribute to new insights into low back pain and its impact on ADL and physical performance.

ABSTRACT

Calcific tendinitis, classified as enthesopathy, is a self-limiting disease that rarely involves the tendons of the gluteus maximus. We discuss a 52-year-old woman with a 1-year history of localized, reproducible posterolateral pain of her left hip, which was previously treated with steroid injection to her left greater trochanteric bursa without significant pain relief. Plain radiography and magnetic resonance imaging of the left hip revealed abnormal edema and calcifications at the insertion of the gluteus maximus tendon to the gluteal tuberosity, corresponding to the area of maximal tenderness on examination. This case report contributes to the growing medical literature for the rare presentation of calcific tendinitis of gluteus maximus insertion and reinforces the importance of the patient history, focused physical examination with special testing, and pertinent imaging for proper diagnosis and management.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: There is a need to increase the capacity and capability of musculoskeletal researchers to design, conduct, and report high-quality clinical trials. The objective of this study was to identify and prioritise clinical trial learning needs of musculoskeletal researchers in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Findings will be used to inform development of an e-learning musculoskeletal clinical trials course. METHODS: A two-round online modified Delphi study was conducted with an inter-disciplinary panel of musculoskeletal researchers from Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, representing various career stages and roles, including clinician researchers and consumers with lived experience of musculoskeletal conditions. Round 1 involved panellists nominating 3-10 topics about musculoskeletal trial design and conduct that they believe would be important to include in an e-learning course about musculoskeletal clinical trials. Topics were synthesised and refined. Round 2 asked panellists to rate the importance of all topics (very important, important, not important), as well as select and rank their top 10 most important topics. A rank score was calculated whereby higher scores reflect higher rankings by panellists. RESULTS: Round 1 was completed by 121 panellists and generated 555 individual topics describing their musculoskeletal trial learning needs. These statements were grouped into 37 unique topics for Round 2, which was completed by 104 panellists. The topics ranked as most important were: (1) defining a meaningful research question (rank score 560, 74% of panellists rated topic as very important); (2) choosing the most appropriate trial design (rank score 410, 73% rated as very important); (3) involving consumers in trial design through to dissemination (rank score 302, 62% rated as very important); (4) bias in musculoskeletal trials and how to minimise it (rank score 299, 70% rated as very important); and (5) choosing the most appropriate control/comparator group (rank score 265, 65% rated as very important). CONCLUSIONS: This modified Delphi study generated a ranked list of clinical trial learning needs of musculoskeletal researchers. Findings can inform training courses and professional development to improve researcher capabilities and enhance the quality and conduct of musculoskeletal clinical trials.

ABSTRACT

This study systematically investigated the influence of a passive arm-support exoskeleton (ASE) on static postural balance in load-holding tasks under different weight conditions and load locations, and the relationship between such influence and the exoskeleton's supportive force profile. Using a 3 (exoskeleton interventions) ×3 (weight conditions) ×3 (load locations) within-subjects design, the research found that wearing ASE with supportive force significantly reduced postural sway by 17.84% and 15.19% across all conditions compared to without wearing the exoskeleton and with deactivated support, respectively. These improvements were consistent with subjective assessments. The stability benefits varied with the weight and load location, reflecting the exoskeleton's supportive force profile. Overall, the study suggests that the supportive force from the ASE can enhance static postural balance, with effectiveness dependent on weight conditions and load locations. This highlights the potential of passive ASEs for improving stability and reducing fall risks in work environments.

AIM: To determine differences in physical examination findings between people with acute whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) with and without headache. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, participants with acute WAD were evaluated to assess differences in the presence of physical impairments. The following were assessed: pain intensity on manual palpation the over spinous process of C1-C3, zygapophyseal joints of C0-C4, and trapezius, sternocleidomastoid, suboccipitalis, masseter and temporalis muscles; cervical range of motion (ROM); flexion-rotation test (FRT); forward head posture; cranio-cervical flexion test (CCFT); neck flexor and extensor endurance; pressure-pain thresholds (PPT) over neural structures and upper limb neural tests (ULNT) in addition to median UNLT + CCF. Correlation analyses were performed to assess the association between examination findings and headache intensity. Logistic regression and discriminant analyses were also performed. RESULTS: Forty-seven participants (26 men and 21 women; mean age = 38.9 years old) were included in the study. 60% of the participants presented with headache. Several examination findings were significantly different between groups. A group of examination findings composed of neck endurance, manual palpation over cervical and muscular structures, PPT, CCFT, ROM and FRT could discriminate between groups with a sensitivity of 86.7% and specificity of 90%. CONCLUSIONS: Several neuromusculoskeletal features are different between people with acute WAD with or without headache. A combination of features could distinguish between groups with high levels of sensitivity and specificity.

BACKGROUND: Self-management is endorsed in clinical practice guidelines for the care of musculoskeletal pain. In a randomized clinical trial, we tested the effectiveness of an artificial intelligence-based self-management app (selfBACK) as an adjunct to usual care for patients with low back and neck pain referred to specialist care. OBJECTIVE: This study is a process evaluation aiming to explore patients' engagement and experiences with the selfBACK app and specialist health care practitioners' views on adopting digital self-management tools in their clinical practice. METHODS: App usage analytics in the first 12 weeks were used to explore patients' engagement with the SELFBACK app. Among the 99 patients allocated to the SELFBACK interventions, a purposive sample of 11 patients (aged 27-75 years, 8 female) was selected for semistructured individual interviews based on app usage. Two focus group interviews were conducted with specialist health care practitioners (n=9). Interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Nearly one-third of patients never accessed the app, and one-third were low users. Three themes were identified from interviews with patients and health care practitioners: (1) overall impression of the app, where patients discussed the interface and content of the app, reported on usability issues, and described their app usage; (2) perceived value of the app, where patients and health care practitioners described the primary value of the app and its potential to supplement usual care; and (3) suggestions for future use, where patients and health care practitioners addressed aspects they believed would determine acceptance. CONCLUSIONS: Although the app's uptake was relatively low, both patients and health care practitioners had a positive opinion about adopting an app-based self-management intervention for low back and neck pain as an add-on to usual care. Both described that the app could reassure patients by providing trustworthy information, thus empowering them to take actions on their own. Factors influencing app acceptance and engagement, such as content relevance, tailoring, trust, and usability properties, were identified. BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a common musculoskeletal disorder. Effect of massage in the management of CLBP has been documented, but it is not clear which massage regimen is more effective. This study was carried out to compare the effect of connective tissue massage and classical massage on pain, lumbar mobility, function, disability, and well-being among patients with CLBP. METHODS: The study included 30 participants who were randomly assigned to one of three intervention groups: the connective tissue massage group (CTMG; n = 10), the classical massage group (CMG; n = 10), and a standard physiotherapy/control group (CG; n = 10). The interventions were administered three times a week for four consecutive weeks. Assessments were conducted at baseline and at the end of the fourth week. Pain severity (Visual Analog Scale), lumbar mobility (Modified Schober Test), function (Back Pain Functional Scale), disability (Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire), and well-being (Short Form-36/SF-36) was evaluated. RESULTS: All groups exhibited improvements in pain, lumbar mobility, function, and disability after 4 weeks (p < 0.05). The CMG showed enhancements in physical function, bodily pain, role physical, and role emotional subgroups of SF-36. The CTMG demonstrated improvements in all subgroups of SF-36 except general health (p < 0.05), while the CG only improved in the physical function subgroup (p < 0.05). A 2-way repeated measures ANOVA revealed a significant group-time interaction for MST (p = 0.04), Bodily Pain (p = 0.025) and Role Physical (p = 0.015). CONCLUSIONS: The findings obtained from this study showed that CTMG was superior to CMG and CG in increasing lumbar mobility, and both massage applications were superior to the CG in increasing the well-being.

ABSTRACT

Telemedicine and digital health represent alternative approaches for clinical practice; indeed, its potential in healthcare services for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and disease monitoring is widely acknowledged. These are all crucial issues to consider when dealing with chronic Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases (RMDs). The aim was to determine the current state of telemedicine in the field of rheumatology, considering the tools and devices in use as well as the Patient Reported Outcomes. A scoping review was performed following the PRISMA-ScR, retrieving articles through five databases from 1990 to 2022. Inclusion criteria were as follows: (I) adult patients with RMDs, (II) original research papers in the English language with available abstracts, and (III) telehealth and telemedicine are provided as healthcare services. Within the 62 included studies, multiple tools of telemedicine were used: 21/62 websites/online platforms, 18/62 mobile applications, 16/62 telephone contacts, 5/62 video-consultations, and 1/62 wearable devices. Outcomes were classified based on the economic, clinical, and humanistic framework. Clinical outcomes assessed through digital tools were pain, disease activity, and serum uric acid levels. Humanistic outcomes have been grouped according to four categories (e.g., mental and physical function, health management, and health perception). The heterogeneity of digital tools in the field of rheumatology highlights the challenge of implementing reliable research into clinical practice. Effective telerehabilitation models have been presented, and the use of a tight control strategy has also been mentioned. Future research should focus on establishing studies on other RMDs as well as summarizing and formulating clinical guidelines for RMDs. Key Points • Evidence for the usefulness of telemedicine and digital health for managing and monitoring rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases is progressively increasing. • Several digital tools effectively measure clinical and humanistic and patient reported outcomes in rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. • Integrating diverse digital tools in rheumatology is challenging yet promising. • Future research should focus on developing standardized recommendations for practical use of telemedicine in daily practice.

AIMS: To (a) compare student nurses' health status and levels of ergonomics knowledge and awareness to those of first-year nursing staff and (b) investigate the association between nurses' ergonomic compliance and health status with their educational preparedness. DESIGN: This cohort study compared ergonomics awareness and knowledge, and health status of nurses when they were students and after their first-year working in medical facilities. METHODS: In total, 133 4th-year student nurses completed a survey; 45 of them completed a second survey after working 1 year in a medical facility. Their health status was compared over time using repeated-measures ANOVA. Correlation tests were used to analyse associations between ergonomics knowledge and awareness, health status, demographic variables and educational preparedness. RESULTS: Respondents in both surveys displayed weak knowledge of ergonomic principles significantly associated with increased pain intensity and educational preparedness. PATIENT CONTRIBUTION: Ergonomics training should be expanded during nursing studies and first-year training to prevent long-term health disorders.

BACKGROUND: Women of reproductive age experience cyclical variation in the female sex steroid hormones 17ß-estradiol and progesterone during the menstrual cycle that is attenuated by some hormonal contraceptives. Estrogens perform a primary function in sexual development and reproduction but have nonreproductive effects on bone, muscle, and sinew tissues (ie, ligaments and tendons), which may influence injury risk and physical performance. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study is to understand the effect of the menstrual cycle and hormonal contraceptive use on bone and calcium metabolism, and musculoskeletal health and performance. METHODS: A total of 5 cohorts of physically active women (aged 18-40 years) will be recruited to participate: eumenorrheic, nonhormonal contraceptive users (n=20); combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP) users (n=20); hormonal implant users (n=20); hormonal intrauterine system users (n=20); and hormonal injection users (n=20). Participants must have been using the COCP and implant for at least 1 year and the intrauterine system and injection for at least 2 years. First-void urine samples and fasted blood samples will be collected for biochemical analysis of calcium and bone metabolism, hormones, and metabolic markers. Knee extensor and flexor strength will be measured using an isometric dynamometer, and lower limb tendon and stiffness, tone, and elasticity will be measured using a Myoton device. Functional movement will be assessed using a single-leg drop to assess the frontal plane projection angle and the qualitative assessment of single leg loading. Bone density and macro- and microstructure will be measured using ultrasound, dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, and high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography. Skeletal material properties will be estimated from reference point indentation, performed on the flat surface of the medial tibia diaphysis. Body composition will be assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. The differences in outcome measures between the hormonal contraceptive groups will be analyzed in a one-way between-group analysis of covariance. Within the eumenorrheic group, the influence of the menstrual cycle on outcome measures will be assessed using a linear mixed effects model. Within the COCP group, differences across 2 time points will be analyzed using the paired-samples 2-tailed t test. RESULTS: The research was funded in January 2020, and data collection started in January 2022, with a projected data collection completion date of August 2024. The number of participants who have consented at the point of manuscript submission is 66. It is expected that all data analysis will be completed and results published by the end of 2024. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding the effects of the menstrual cycle and hormonal contraception on musculoskeletal health and performance will inform contraceptive choices for physically active women to manage injury risk. The intricate interplay between the muscle and bone tissues is a fundamental aspect of musculoskeletal physiology. Over the past decades, emerging research has highlighted the pivotal role of lipid signaling in mediating communication between these tissues. This chapter delves into the multifaceted mechanisms through which lipids, particularly phospholipids, sphingolipids, and eicosanoids, participate in orchestrating cellular responses and metabolic pathways in both muscle and bone. Additionally, we examine the clinical implications of disrupted lipid signaling in musculoskeletal disorders, offering insights into potential therapeutic avenues. This chapter aims to shed light on the complex lipid-driven interactions between the muscle and bone tissues, paving the way for a deeper understanding of musculoskeletal health and disease.

ABSTRACT

The musculoskeletal system, which is vital for movement, support, and protection, can be impaired by disorders such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and muscular dystrophy. This review focuses on the advances in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, specifically aimed at alleviating these disorders. It explores the roles of cell therapy, particularly Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) and Adipose-Derived Stem Cells (ADSCs), biomaterials, and biomolecules/external stimulations in fostering bone and muscle regeneration. The current research underscores the potential of MSCs and ADSCs despite the persistent challenges of cell scarcity, inconsistent outcomes, and safety concerns. Moreover, integrating exogenous materials such as scaffolds and external stimuli like electrical stimulation and growth factors shows promise in enhancing musculoskeletal regeneration. This review emphasizes the need for comprehensive studies and adopting innovative techniques together to refine and advance these multi-therapeutic strategies, ultimately benefiting patients with musculoskeletal disorders.

ABSTRACT

Creating musculoskeletal models in a paediatric population currently involves either creating an image-based model from medical imaging data or a generic model using linear scaling. Image-based models provide a high level of accuracy but are time-consuming and costly to implement, on the other hand, linear scaling of an adult template musculoskeletal model is faster and common practice, but the output errors are significantly higher. An articulated shape model incorporates pose and shape to predict geometry for use in musculoskeletal models based on existing information from a population to provide both a fast and accurate method. From a population of 333 children aged 4-18 years old, we have developed an articulated shape model of paediatric lower limb bones to predict bone geometry from eight bone landmarks commonly used for motion capture. Bone surface root mean squared errors were found to be 2.63 ± 0.90 mm, 1.97 ± 0.61 mm, and 1.72 ± 0.51 mm for the pelvis, femur, and tibia/fibula, respectively. Linear scaling produced bone surface errors of 4.79 ± 1.39 mm, 4.38 ± 0.72 mm, and 4.39 ± 0.86 mm for the pelvis, femur, and tibia/fibula, respectively. Clinical bone measurement errors were low across all bones predicted using the articulated shape model, which outperformed linear scaling for all measurements. However, the model failed to accurately capture torsional measures (femoral anteversion and tibial torsion). Overall, the articulated shape model was shown to be a fast and accurate method to predict lower limb bone geometry in a paediatric population, superior to linear scaling.

OBJECTIVE: Although studies have shown that Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) are common and continue to be a main source of disability and work time loss, there are few reports on elbow WMSDs. The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence and associated factors of elbow WMSDs. METHODS: The valid questionnaires of 57501 workers from 15 different industries nationwide were collected and the Chi-square test and logistic-regression-analysis were applied to reveal the prevalence and risk factors of elbow. RESULTS: The findings indicated that prevalence of elbow WMSDs among workers was 7.3%. The prevalence of elbow WMSDs in toy manufacturing was 21.3%, which significantly higher than that in other industries (P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that aged 40 and above, married, very poor health, left-handed, lifting weights (more than 20 kg each time) , work requiring upper limb or hand force, work in an uncomfortable position, repetitive operations within one minute, using vibrating tools, work involves cold, cool winds or temperature changes, work being completed in the same workshop, work being done outdoors, frequent deal with customers , two shifts, often work overtime, staff shortage, often work for colleagues were the risk factors of elbow WMSDs.The higer education level and monthly income, and enough rest time were the protective factors of elbow WMSDs. CONCLUSION: The toy manufacturing is a high-risk industry for elbow WMSDs. The publicity and education of ergonomics knowledge should be strengthened, and the workers' ergonomics awareness should be improved to reduce the impact of WMSDs.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are disorders of the musculoskeletal system that have the highest prevalence among workers worldwide. Workers in gas stations usually work in poor ergonomic working conditions, including prolonged standing and repetitive posturing. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of WMSDs and fatigue and to identify the predictors of WMSDs among gas station workers. DESIGN: The present study was a cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: 2962 gas station workers from an oil and gas company in China, with ages ranging from 17 to 75 years old, 55.47% female. RESULTS: The prevalence of WMSDs within the 12 months prior to the study was 73.23%, with the highest prevalence in the neck, shoulders, ankles and feet. Furthermore, a correlation was observed between fatigue, stress and WMSDs. Fatigue and job role were the strongest predictors of WMSDs, with an OR range of 2.211-3.413. CONCLUSIONS: This research identified the detrimental impact of WMSDs and fatigue on gas station workers, indicating the critical need for interventions to reduce WMSDs and relieve fatigue.
