ABSTRACT
We provide a brief introduction on the importance and use of scientific collections and a general overview of the articles that are part of the special issue of the Brazilian Journal of Mammalogy on Brazilian mammal collections. The 19 articles that comprise this issue refer to collections distributed across eight Brazilian states. Most of the collections hold specimens of living mammals, and two of them are paleontological collections. Two articles address specific orders of mammals, while the rest present data for all the orders. We hope that this issue represents a significant contribution to efforts to preserve Brazilian scientific collections, providing a more comprehensive view of their importance and the current and potential use of the specimens preserved therein.

ABSTRACT
During COVID-19, many museums closed their physical structures and transitioned their exhibits to online platforms for public digital access. As museums reopen, there remains a need for some visitors to attend exhibits and cultural events with minimal risk. This article examines an innovative hybrid platform for museum digital access-personal telerobots to co-explore museums alongside community members. The way it works is as follows: a community member remains at home and remotely logs into the museum robot. A friend/family member is physically at the museum, and once the robot is embodied by the remote user, they can walk around the museum together, talk with each other, interact with artifacts, and experience the exhibits together. Ultimately, the robot user and the visitor can both be immersed in the venue, separate yet together at the same time. This article examines the use of online community events and personal robots in a Mexican-American history, art, and culture museum for cultural exhibits and how these technologies may facilitate the way community members learn, interact, and explore museum artifacts. It also explores the need for best practices on the use of online communities and personal robot technology in museums. This work contributes observations, reflections, and curatorial considerations on both forms of digital media for inclusive museum practices.
ABSTRACT
The Covid-19 pandemic has sparked an unprecedented public debate over socio-scientific controversies, particularly regarding vaccination and social distancing measures. Despite the potential of such subjects for developing critical thinking and a sense of citizenship, the theme of controversies is still incipient in science museums. This documentary study investigates the way three science institutions have proposed online exhibits on Covid-19 on Google Arts & Culture platform and checks their potential for favoring teaching on controversial science topics. Google Arts & Culture platform was searched for Covid-19-related keywords and the filtering of the results was based on focus and organizing institutions. Three exhibits were detected, whose analysis was submitted to an inter-rater agreement (Cohen's kappa). The results revealed the predominance of social and economic aspects that can strongly favor more scientifically progressive views of both science literacy and a socially undistorted science. On the other hand, the superficiality of political discussions on science topics, a lack of naturalization of the controversial discussions, and an excessive use of textual content were identified, thus revealing some initiatives have not explored the interactivity, multimediality, and the way dilemmas that mark the trajectory of science museums extend to online exhibits. From this perspective, we point out paths for teaching and learning socio-scientific controversies in museums.

ABSTRACT
This article reflects on the triad tourism, museums, and leisure from the public study. It consists of quantitative research conducted in two science museums in Brazil. The sample was 342 forms distributed equally between the surveyed institutions, 171 each. Two instruments were used to obtain data: the form for the quantitative approach and field observation, which enabled the observation of qualitative data. For the statistical treatment of the database, the R program, version 3.6.1 was used, through regression and correlation analysis. The results point out that the profile of the public is similar to others both in the national and international context and confirm the elite status of these spaces. In the specific case of Brazil, the cultural factor can be highlighted as a defining feature of distancing the population. A surprise identified in the survey was the low rate found for visitors who can be defined as tourists.

Natural history collections (NHCs) contain valuable information that can be used in different fields of knowledge, and aid in the development of society, science, and technology. The role of curators and taxonomists in maintaining and improving biological collections is essential, as these are fundamental for the understanding of biodiversity. However, the role of taxonomists and the importance of NHCs to society have been undervalued in recent years. We, while attending a graduate program on collections at PUCRS, noted a gap in knowledge about scientific collections. Was this gap, which continued from our undergraduate to graduate years, a mere coincidence or widespread in biological science programs in Brazil? We queried 126 Brazilian institutions of higher education to assess the presence of courses related to natural-history collections and taxonomy. A total of 25 private and 37 public universities from 126 institutions searched, have a program of study in biological sciences in the curriculum on their websites. About 16% offer some course related to NHCs or taxonomy, and all of them are public institutions. Despite the budget cutting made by the Brazilian government that make it even more difficult to recognize NHCs and related areas, we believe that there should be more links among researchers from different areas and especially between the levels of basic and higher education, so that students are exposed to this subject early in their education. We, as Brazilian students, believe that more information on NHC-related issues and taxonomic subjects is urgently needed in biological science programs.(AU)

Abstract: Introduction: Non-formal education occurs outside the traditional teaching environment, with structured educational objectives and the promotion of student autonomy to explore spaces, such as in libraries and museums. Museums offer a wide range of themes and can encompass different determinants of the health and disease process. Objective: To outline the situation of museums as a form of extended curriculum in Brazilian medical schools. Method: This is a narrative review conducted from February to July 2021. The study was developed from the analysis, as well as the relevant literature, of three main documents: National Curriculum Guidelines for the Medicine Course 2014, National Policy for Museum Education (PNEM) 2017 and Guidelines for Outreach Programs in Brazilian Higher Education 2018. The descriptors "Medical Education" and "Museums" and their equivalents in Portuguese were used in the search for works published in the databases. Result: Museums provide a redefinition of the collection's own specialized knowledge, with the potential to develop clinical skills related to perception, investigation and creative thinking, contributing to the medical student to perceive themselves as an agent of their practices and postures, in addition to offering a space to give voice to health service users. According to the PNEM, museum education should promote a direct interaction between the museum and society, seeking social transformation, in line with the concept of outreach activities, which will represent at least 10% of the learning hours of undergraduate medical training. Therefore, the museum is a means for outreach activities to be developed, connecting teaching and research, including and involving the academic community in the external community. About 26 museums were found, mainly concentrated in the south-southeast axis, whose main themes are the history of medicine, biographies and human anatomy, health and life. Conclusion: Museum education in medicine, through outreach programs, can impact the progressive redefinition of concepts about the health and disease process, with a consequent transformation of the vocational exercise for care, whether in terms of promotion, prevention, recovery or rehabilitation.
ABSTRACT
This article brings a theoretical reflection on the meanings and interactions between Leisure and Museums. The methodological procedures consisted of bibliographic review and document analysis. The methodological path adopted allowed a wide investigation of the museum universe and leisure over several historical periods up to the current paradigm, with emphasis on what was conventionally called New Museology. In this new paradigm, guided by the cultural industry, we consider that the new forms of interaction between Museums and their public, is always mediated from the perspective of cultural leisure and the reach of the important social function of museums.

Abstract The Caribbean monk seal (Monachus tropicalis), the only seal species native to Central America, was declared extinct in 2008, with the last confirmed sighting in 1952. This species historically had a broad range throughout the gulf of Mexico. This article discusses the history of Western science on the monk seal, from its first recorded sighting by a Western colonizer in 1492 to scientific collection in the 1800s and 1900s, as a history of the erasure of this species. Museum practices of collecting and displaying Caribbean monk seals have directly contributed to this erasure, and ways of writing a new history by giving the Caribbean monk seal the capacity to refuse erasure are suggested.

This paper discusses the phenomenon of leisure in contemporary times and the urgency of adopting other paradigms to analyze its manifestations. It presents a research carried out with children from kindergarten in museums in order to educate for other sensibilities. The study aimed to analyze the narratives made by 5-year-old children about the situation of the black people in our society, powered by visits to two museums in the city of Belo Horizonte. Thereby, the articulation of the concepts of childhood, curriculum, education and museum language allowed analyses that moved towards an ethno-racial education for these children. The qualitative research adopted the case study and document analysis strategies, interviews, participant observation. Thus, we see a positive reading about black people by the children and the constitution of other imaginaries made possible by playful practices outside the school context.

Tourism activity in Peru has been experiencing significant growth in the last ten years, positioning this economic sector as the third largest contributor to the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Likewise, Peru has a high ecological and climate diversity, which makes it the possessor of renewable energy potential, specifically solar and wind power. The rapid growth of tourism is leading to generating prospects for becoming a sustainable destination. In this sense, it is important to understand and evaluate the Peruvian legislative framework for sustainable tourism and the current state of the implementation of the scenarios provided by the governmental entity in terms of sustainability, and its link with tourism activity. Based on what has been described, this study is aimed at evaluating the four most relevant museums in the northern part of Peru; in addition, it contributes to the studies that exist at the intersection of tourism and sustainability in the chains of activities related to tourism and calls for rationality applied to tourism management in this region of Latin America. The results of the literature review of the Peruvian legal framework reveal a lack of specific laws and regulations on sustainable tourism; on the contrary, there are policies in force that contribute to promoting the development of sustainable tourism. The quantified evaluation of the solar and wind potentials of the geographical area under study indicates the minimum renewable energy potential necessary for its transformation and use in the development of sustainable museums and its contribution to sustainable tourism.

We studied how interactions with interpretative science centre staff impacts the learning behaviours and engagement levels of visitors who engage with exhibits at Science North (Sudbury, Canada). This study uses the Visitor-Based Learning Framework. The tool consists of seven discrete learning-associated behaviours that visitors show when engaging with exhibits, which are grouped into three categories of engagement: Initiation, Transition, and Breakthrough. These categories reflect increasing levels of engagement and depth of the learning experience. We studied forty-seven Science North exhibits, and 4,835 visitors to analyse the impact of unstructured facilitation in a naturalistic setting. We compared visitor Engagement Levels with and without a facilitator present. We determined that the presence of staff has a statistically significant impact on the percentage of visitors that engage in Breakthrough behaviours. When a facilitator is present, more visitors reach the Breakthrough Level of Engagement (p < 0.001). In the second phase of the study, we explored what facilitators do and say through thematic analysis to uncover common patterns of facilitator actions and comments. Our findings showed that facilitators employed strategies and methods that can be grouped in four categories or Facilitation Dimensions: Comfort, Information, Reflection, and Exhibit Use. These dimensions encompass different strategies and techniques of facilitation, that are used in a variety of situations and sequences. Our study goes beyond anecdotal evidence to show that staff-visitor interactions have a positive impact on visitor engagement with exhibits and therefore, potentially on visitor learning from exhibits. Our findings can be used to inform not only training programs but also managerial decisions and considerations around resource allocation. We suggest that facilitators are a fundamental asset for institutions that prioritize visitor engagement, one that should be given top priority when considering areas for investing.

Abstract In the last five years there has been a resurgence of scholarly research and museum exhibitions on the history of HIV and AIDS. This work has called into question some of the conventions of archiving and interpreting the history of the pandemic. It is increasingly clear that a narrow range of materials have been saved. As historians and curators turn to these holdings for analysis and exhibition, they find they inadequately represent the impact of AIDS across diverse groups as well as the range of local, national, international responses. This essay considers some of the factors that shape collection of the material culture, particularly the heritage of public health, and the consequences for our understanding of lessons from the past.

Buenos Aires' González Varela Library-Museum exhibits a possibly unique Lundy Rochester Model of Heidbrink Kinet-O-Meter anesthesia machine. Surveyed anesthesia libraries or museums reported no identical model of anesthesia machine or literature specific to same. Machine markings and the flowmeter patent helped narrow the year of manufacture to circa 1936.
