ABSTRACT

Background: Group preoperative education is becoming standard care for patients preparing for surgery, alongside optimisation of exercise, diet, and wellbeing. Although patient education is essential, the effectiveness of group education programmes or 'surgery schools' as a means of delivery is unclear. This review examines whether attending group preoperative education improves patient outcomes. Methods: We systematically reviewed studies of group perioperative education before major elective surgery. Observational or intervention studies with a baseline group or control arm were included. All outcomes reported were collected and, where possible, effect estimates were summarised using random effects meta-analysis. Results: Twenty-seven studies reported on 48 different outcomes after group education. Overall, there was a 0.7 (95% confidence interval 0.27-1.13) day reduction in mean length of stay. The odds ratio for postoperative complications after abdominal surgery was 0.56 (95% confidence interval 0.36-0.85; nine studies). Patient-centred outcomes were grouped into themes. Most studies reported a benefit from group education, but only postoperative physical impairment, pain, knowledge, activation, preoperative anxiety, and some elements of quality of life were statistically significant. Conclusion: This review presents a summary of published evidence available for group preoperative education. While these data lend support for such programmes, there is a need for adequately powered prospective studies to evaluate the effectiveness of preoperative education on clinical outcomes and to evaluate whether behaviour change is sustained. Furthermore, the content, timing and mode of delivery, and evaluation measures of preoperative education require standardisation. Systematic review protocol: PROSPERO (166297).

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study evaluated the association between preoperative education and adherence to downstream components of enhanced recovery programs (ERPs) and surgical outcomes among patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery. Background: ERPs improve outcomes for surgical patients. While preoperative education is an essential component of ERPs, its relationship with other components is unclear. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of all ERP patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery from 2019 to 2022. Our institutional ERP database was linked with American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program data and stratified by adherence to preoperative education. Primary outcomes included adherence to individual ERP components and secondary outcomes included high-level ERP adherence (>70% of components), length of stay (LOS), readmissions, and 30-day complications. Results: A total of 997 patients were included. The mean (SD) age was 56.5 (15.8) years, 686 (57.3%) were female, and 717 (71.9%) were white. On adjusted analysis, patients who received preoperative education (n = 877, 88%) had higher adherence rates for the following ERP components: no prolonged fasting (estimate = +19.6%; P < 0.001), preoperative blocks (+8.0%; P = 0.02), preoperative multimodal analgesia (+18.0%; P < 0.001), early regular diet (+15.9%; P < 0.001), and postoperative multimodal analgesia (+6.4%; P < 0.001). High-level ERP adherence was 13.4% higher (P < 0.01) and LOS was 2.0 days shorter (P < 0.001) for those who received preoperative education. Classification and regression tree analysis identified preoperative education as the first-level predictor for adherence to early regular diet, the second-level predictor for LOS, and the third-level predictor for ERP high-level adherence. Conclusion: Preoperative education is associated with adherence to ERP components and improved surgical outcomes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Preoperative education can improve postoperative quality of life in patients undergoing stoma surgery. However, the prevalence and when, where, and how preoperative education is implemented are unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the current status of outpatient preoperative education for patients undergoing stoma surgery for rectal cancer as perceived by nurses. Additionally, it sought to identify the information provided by Japanese healthcare providers as a part of preoperative education. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1,716 wound, ostomy, and continence nurses (WOCNs) in charge of stoma clinics at Japanese hospitals. Unsigned self-administered survey forms were mailed to the participants, and paper- or web-based responses were obtained. The main questions included: overview of the participants and their facilities, provision of outpatient preoperative education, status of implementation, and preoperative education components. To examine the factors associated with preoperative education, the independent variable was the presence or absence of preoperative education in the clinic, and the explanatory variables were the years of experience as a nurse, years of experience as a WOCN, type of hospital, number of beds, and number of intestinal stoma surgeries per year. Regression analysis was performed. RESULTS: We received 773 valid responses (valid response rate: 45%). Duration of experience as a nurse and as a WOCN were 24.6 and 10.9 years, respectively. Outpatient preoperative education was provided by 24% of the participants. Most preoperative education sessions were conducted for patients or caregivers. Preoperative education took 31-60 min per patient, and one to five patients received preoperative education each month. Booklets, ostomy appliances, and stoma models/dolls were used as supplementary materials for preoperative education. The most frequently mentioned components of preoperative education were stoma care, daily life, social security, stoma clinic, traveling and going out, quality of life after stoma surgery, and precautions for medical treatment. In addition, education on the use of restrooms on the go, disaster preparedness, defecation disorders after restorative proctectomy, and complications after stoma closure were considered necessary. CONCLUSIONS: The implementation rate of outpatient preoperative education was low (24%). Future challenges include the development of specific educational content and procedures suitable for the Japanese medical environment and the establishment of preoperative medical care teams for stoma surgery to promote the provision of outpatient preoperative education.

Background: Advancements in surgical procedures for total joint arthroplasty (TJA) have resulted in more effective procedures with more rapid recovery. To prepare patients for surgery, many organizations offer a preoperative "joint class," which has been associated with reduced length of stay (LOS). Virtual modes of education are increasingly favored for those having TJA. Purpose: To determine whether participation in an individually administered preoperative educational session ("Prehab") relates to reduced LOS or increased likelihood of same-day discharge (SDD) for those undergoing TJA. Additionally, to establish whether and the virtual mode of education provision is superior or inferior to the in-person mode with regards to LOS benefits. Methods: The author conducted a case-control study of 2532 patients who had a primary or revision TJA between January 2022 and August 2022 at a single institution. Data were obtained from the electronic medical record. A total of 1118 patients attended Prehab; 1414 patients did not. Patients were included if they were over the age of 18 and had a total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) during the study period. T-tests, chi-square χ2 tests, and binomial logistic regression were used to evaluate the LOS and SDD outcomes for those who participated in Prehab compared with those who did not. Results: Those receiving Prehab in any form had shorter LOS than those who had not. Those receiving virtual Prehab had the shortest LOS. There was no difference in the rate of SDD for outpatient-class patients. Conclusion: Preoperative education is associated with LOS benefits to patients undergoing TJA. The virtual mode of education provision is at minimum non-inferior, and may be superior, to the in-person mode. The lack of statistically significant between-group differences for SDD outcomes may be explained by a lack of SDD-specific educational content provided during Prehab.

Background: Increasing numbers of patients are undergoing total joint arthroplasty as a treatment for osteoarthritis, which can be an anxiety-provoking experience. Setting expectations through a preoperative physical therapy (pre-op PT) session can alleviate some of these stressors, potentially decrease hospital length of stay (LOS), and promote home discharge. Purpose: We sought to determine whether attending a pre-op PT session is associated with decreased hospital LOS and home discharge in total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed of 20,822 patients who underwent THA or TKA between January 2020 and December 2023. Pre-op PT attendance and covariates, including patient demographics and clinical data, were collected and analyzed for association with LOS and discharge disposition. Results: Unadjusted univariate analysis revealed that THA and TKA patients who received pre-op PT had a significantly lower average LOS and were more likely to be discharged home. Our multivariate regression model showed that pre-op PT was not significantly associated with LOS in both groups but was significantly associated with home discharge among THA patients. Conclusions: Our retrospective study of the effect of pre-op PT education on LOS and discharge disposition for elective THA and TKA patients found different results in univariate and multivariate analysis. Further study is needed to confirm the association found on multivariate analysis between pre-op PT and home discharge in THA patients.

Although the Caesarean section (CS) is considered a harmless surgery, it has various complications. Women scheduled for elective CSs often have high levels of anxiety due to a lack of knowledge. The aim of this quantitative quasi-experimental study was to determine the relationship between preoperative educational sessions and anxiety levels among women undergoing CSs. The study was conducted at the antenatal unit in the King Faisal Medical Complex (KFMC) in Taif, Saudi Arabia, using a structured interview questionnaire, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and satisfaction interviews. A total of 50 pregnant women participated in this study, who were divided into two groups: 25 participants in the intervention group and 25 in the control group. Most participants (92%) in the intervention group had low anxiety levels following educational sessions, and 96% of the participants were very satisfied with the preoperative information they had been given. Women in the control group (again, 92%) had high anxiety levels, and there was a significant difference in the anxiety levels of the intervention and control groups (p ≤ 0.5) after the educational sessions. Providing proper preoperative education about CSs can reduce preoperative anxiety, improve patient outcomes, and enhance patients' involvement in their care and decision-making.

Purpose: Lumbar disc herniation, often treated with surgical decompression when conservative measures fail, presents challenges due to prolonged prone positioning in surgeries. This retrospective study evaluates the benefits of preoperative adaptive training to mitigate post-surgical physiological changes. Patients and Methods: A review of medical records from June 2021 to March 2023 identified 170 patients unresponsive to conservative treatments. Grouped into adaptive training and control groups based on historical data, the former had undergone exercises to prepare for surgery and postoperative changes. Vital signs and VAS scores were extracted from patient records to assess training impact. Results: The adaptive training group demonstrated stabilized vital signs intraoperatively, with a notable improvement in surgical exposure compared to the control group. However, there were no significant differences in operative time or blood loss between the groups. Additionally, postoperative VAS scores showed no significant improvement in the adaptive training group at follow-up intervals of 14 days, 1 month, and 3 months post-operation, compared to the control group. Conclusion: Our study reveals that preoperative adaptive training stabilizes intraoperative blood pressure fluctuations in lumbar disc herniation surgeries. However, this stabilization does not significantly impact long-term postoperative pain management. This highlights the need for further research to explore comprehensive strategies that effectively combine preoperative training with postoperative care.

ABSTRACT

RATIONALE: Preoperative patient education through 'joint class' has potential to improve quality of care for total joint replacement (TJR). However, no formal guidance exists regarding curriculum content, potentially resulting in inter-institutional variation. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to (a) synthesize curriculum components of 'joint classes' across high-volume institutions and (b) develop a preliminary theory of change model for development and evaluation guided by the existing curricula and related literature. METHODS: We reviewed 'joint class' curricula from the websites of the 10 highest-volume TJR centres (by average annual 2017-2019 volume) that publicly disclosed this information. Two reviewers qualitatively compared available content and noted common categories, which were synthesized into key domains across institutions. We then reviewed the PubMed database for literature on pre-TJR patient education and education needs in the past 10 years. Drawing on our curriculum synthesis and related literature, we proposed a theory of change model: hypothesized mechanisms through which 'joint class' confers benefits to patients and health systems. RESULTS: We identified 30 categories in our review of existing class content, which we synthesized into seven key domains: (I) Practical Elements, (II) Logistics, (III) Medical Information, (IV) Modifiable Risk Factors, (V) Expected Outcomes, (VI) Patient Role in Recovery and (VII) Enhanced Education. Variation across institutions was noted. Our preliminary model based on the curriculum synthesis and related literature on the impact of 'joint class' includes three levels: (1) Practical Elements ('joint class' accessibility and information quality), (2) Class Goals (increased health literacy, increased adherence, risk mitigation, realistic expectations, and reduced anxiety) and (3) Target Outcomes (improved clinical outcomes, positive patient experience and increased patient satisfaction). CONCLUSION: Our synthesis identified core common topics included in pre-TJR education but also highlighted variation across institutions, supporting opportunities for standardization. Clinicians and researchers can use our preliminary model to systematically develop and evaluate 'joint classes,' with the goal of establishing a standard of care for TJR preoperative education.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To identify and summarize evidence about the benefits of perioperative pain neuroscience education (PNE) on pain-related and psychosocial outcomes. METHODS: Included were reports written in English that carried out PNE or its synonyms; perioperative period; aged ≥ 18 years; interventional studies and observational studies. Secondary studies, conference abstracts, and editorials were excluded. There was no time limitation. INFORMATION SOURCES: PubMed, Virtual Health Library, Cochrane Library, and Science Direct. Search: June 20th 2023. The risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklists, and synthesis followed the recommendations of the Synthesis Without Meta-analysis (SWiM) guideline. Register: Center for Open Science website (10.17605/OSF.IO/ZTNEJ). RESULTS: The sample consisted of 18 reports. For pain outcomes, it was not possible to attribute PNE benefits because ten reports found improvements in both intervention and control groups. For psychosocial outcomes, fourteen reports found benefits for PNE groups. All the analyzed reports showed low risk of bias. CONCLUSION: PNE had additional benefits beyond those obtained with conventional treatment for psychosocial outcomes. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Due to the lack of evidence, it was not possible to indicate the clinical use of PNE. It is suggested that further studies are needed aimed at clarifying the possible benefits.

OBJECTIVES: Traditional preoperative reminding services have been applied to enhance the quality of bowel preparation for colonoscopy. In this study we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an automated electronic reminder system (E-reminder) on improving bowel preparation and the quality of preoperative education before colonoscopy. METHODS: From August 2021 to March 2022, 833 outpatients aged 50-75 years who underwent colonoscopy were included and randomly assigned to the E-reminder group and the control group. While the control group received routine preoperative education. The E-reminder group received automatic phone call, text message reminders and web services regarding the details of bowel preparation before the colonoscopic examination. The quality of bowel preparation was evaluated by the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS) score and the previously validated objective evaluation scale of automatic BBPS (e-BBPS). RESULTS: In manual assessment, the rate of adequate bowel preparation was improved in the E-reminder group of intention-to-treat population using BBPS (60.7% vs 54.5%, P = 0.01). The percentage of objective evaluated adequate bowel preparation using e-BBPS in the E-reminder group of per-protocol population was significantly higher than that in the control group (76.9% vs 69.2%, P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: E-reminder was an effective tool to improve the quality of bowel preparation and compliance with medical instructions. It may be regarded as an efficient and convenient education tool, improving the quality of medical service.

Preoperative arthroplasty classes decrease complications and readmissions, however, in-person classes are inconvenient for elderly patients with mobility limitations. This retrospective review included 232 patients (305 joints) with in-person preoperative educational classes (IPC) and 155 patients (192 joints) with telephone preoperative educational classes (TC). Compared to IPC, TC patients had a shorter length of stay (P<.009), but a greater percentage made at least one postoperative clinic call (22.8% vs 40%; P<.001). No differences were noted in complications, but emergency room visits significantly decreased for total knee TC patients (P=.039). The increase in clinic calls may be addressed through focused changes to the preoperative telephone dialogue, providing a safe and efficient alternative to IPCs.

BACKGROUND: Surgical resection is a common treatment for patients with colorectal cancer. Patients undergoing surgery are at risk of functional deterioration as a response to surgical stress. Furthermore, patients with cancer often present with systemic problems as well as a functional decline. The study aimed to create a framework for preoperative education for patients undergoing colorectal cancer resection. METHODS: Five databases were utilised to find intervention-based studies describing the content, mode, setting and timing of delivery of preoperative education for patients undergoing abdominal surgery. Physiotherapists were purposively sampled to participate in a focus group session using a seven-step nominal group technique (NGT) with the goal to reach consensus on the proposed content of a preoperative patient education programme. RESULTS: Seventeen studies were reviewed. Results indicate that the mode and timing of the education provided are heterogenous. Content included in the education programs described were breathing exercises, coughing techniques, verbal advice, physical exercises, surgical information, postoperative pain management, nutritional support, relaxation techniques and information about postoperative complications. Six physiotherapists participated in the focus group discussion. Ideas generated in the focus group were similar to those described in the literature. CONCLUSION: Results from both the narrative review and the focus group session assisted the authors to develop a framework for the content, timing, setting and mode of delivery of physiotherapy preoperative education for patients undergoing surgical resection for colorectal cancer.Contribution: The framework can be used to inform a physiotherapy preoperative education programme for patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer.

Background: The time before surgery is a traumatic period for patients. Despite this fact, no research has been conducted on nurses' preoperative patient education in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess preoperative patient education practices and associated factors among nurses working in East Amhara comprehensive specialized hospitals, Ethiopia, 2022. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted with 416 nurses. Pretested, structured questionnaires were used to collect the data. Bivariable analysis was performed for each independent variable with a P-value < 0.25 on the data imported to multivariate logistic regression analysis. AOR with a 95% CI and a P-value < 0.05 at a 5% level of significance were considered. Results: Only 38.5% of nurses were found to have good practices for preoperative patient education, with a response rate of 98%. Nurses with 6 years of work experience (AOR = 3.15, 95% CI: 1.692-5.874), adequate time (AOR = 2.33, 95% CI: 1.119-4.889), training (AOR = 4.27, 95% CI: 1.548-11.796), age 25-29 (AOR = 0.15, 95% CI: 0.070-0.331), age 30-34 (AOR = 0.25, 95% CI: 0.137-0.479), and knowledge (AOR = 3.73, 95% CI: 2.222-6.273) were significantly associated. Conclusion: Preoperative patient education practices among nurses were poor. Work experience, knowledge, training, and adequate time were found to be significant. Organize preoperative patient education programs for nurses that share experiences and provide ongoing training.

Objectives: The quality of health care is individually and subjectively reflected through patients' level of satisfaction, as well as the optimality and effectiveness of the provided postoperative pain management. The provision of postanesthesia care unit (PACU) service in hospitals has led to overall positive outcomes, in addition to the enhancement of patients' satisfaction with the provided pain management service. This study assessed patients' level of satisfaction with PACU service at a university hospital and discussed different factors that might have contributed to the level of satisfaction. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was carried out among patients after being discharged from PACU. The study took place at King Fahad Hospital of the University in Al Khobar, KSA between November 2021 and February 2022. The data were collected using a three-section predesigned questionnaire. Results: Two hundred patients were included in this study. Nearly all patients (95.5%) were satisfied with the provided pain management service. Almost all patients (99.5%) indicated that the PACU staff was courteous and professional during the entire pain management service. More patients complained about pain before using analgesia and this difference was statistically significant (Z = 8.642; p < 0.001). The satisfaction rate was significantly higher in the older age group (>45 years) (Z = 2.114; p = 0.035), in patients with American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) 3 physical status (H = 13.130; p = 0.001), and those with a previous surgical history (Z = 2.139; p = 0.032). Conclusion: This study concluded that the level of patients' satisfaction with PACU service was high, and established a statistically significant association with age, ASA score, and previous surgical history. Healthcare providers should consider patient education and effective communication to increase patients' satisfaction level and improve the overall quality of care.

PURPOSE: Preoperative education is an important part of surgical preparation. Nursing visits offer nurses the opportunity to provide personalized care. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of nursing visits before laparoscopic surgery on the anxiety and pain levels of patients in the postoperative period. DESIGN: Randomized controlled clinical trial. METHODS: Data were collected from 135 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery between March and October 2019 in Istanbul. During the nursing visits, the experimental group (n = 72) was educated by the operating room nurse, while the control group (n = 63) was educated by the service nurse. Data were collected using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Visual Analog Scale. The CONSORT checklist was followed. FINDINGS: The pre-education state anxiety scores of the control and experimental groups were similar and at a moderate level (P > .05). The state anxiety score of the experimental group visited by operating room nurses decreased more than that of the control group after education (P < .001). The postoperative state anxiety and pain scores of the control and experimental groups were found to be similar (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: Visits by operating room nurses before laparoscopic surgery can be an effective method to reduce the anxiety level of patients. Obtaining the opinions of operating room nurses on care integration and organization of in-service education programs may be necessary.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of preoperative web-based information to parents of children undergoing elective ambulatory surgery performed with anesthesia. Outcome measures were parental anxiety, knowledge, and satisfaction. METHOD: The review followed the PRISMA statement. A systematic search of six databases was conducted. Randomized controlled trials, cluster-randomized trials and quasi-randomized controlled trials were eligible for inclusion. RESULT: Eight studies were included. An effect in favour of web-based information compared to standard information was observed for parental anxiety measured before separation from child (SMD=-0.66, 95% CI=-0.92 to -0.40) and after surgery (SMD=-0.55, 95% CI=-0.95 to -0.16), for parental knowledge measured in-hospital (SMD=1.10, Cl 95%=0.37-1.82), and parental satisfaction after discharge (SMD=1.03, 95% Cl=0.41-1.65). No effect was observed for anxiety at separation, and for satisfaction in-hospital. The certainty of the evidence varied from very low to moderate. CONCLUSION: Depending on the timing of assessment, web-based information before pediatric surgery may reduce the level of parental anxiety and increase the level of parental knowledge and satisfaction more than standard care. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Web-based routines can be used to convey pre-operative information to parents before paediatric ambulatory surgery. Still, standardized research that enables further comparison across studies is needed.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Preoperative patient education is an effective intervention of the healthcare team, which has been used to promote patient recovery and well-being. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a nursing preoperative educational intervention on the anxiety and pain of patients undergoing spinal decompression surgery. METHODS: In this pilot randomized controlled study, patients (n=40) undergoing spinal decompression surgery, were randomized into an intervention group (underwent educational intervention, n=23) and a control group (n=17). The preoperative educational intervention included an oral briefing and a leaflet with perioperative care information as well as post-discharge care. Participants completed the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS), the subscale "State" of the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S), the Numerical Rating Scale, and a questionnaire about demographic characteristics, the day before surgery (T0) and the first post-operation day (T1). Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 22.0. The statistical significance level was set at p<0.05. RESULTS: A significant reduction was found in pain intensity before and after surgery in both groups. Pain levels, after surgery, were significantly lower in the intervention group compared to pain levels in the control group (t=2.174, p=0.036). In both groups, high state anxiety scores on the STAI-S scale before surgery were confirmed by high anxiety scores in APAISsurgery. Additionally, in both groups after surgery, high state anxiety scores on the STAI-S scale were associated with high pain levels. There were no statistically significant group differences with regard to scores of STAI-S before and after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Nursing preoperative educational intervention in patients undergoing spinal decompression surgery had a positive impact on reducing the intensity of pain after surgery. These results indicated that nurses and health care providers should integrate patient education and health literacy into their daily clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: The aim of this systematic review was to determine whether prehabilitation before total hip arthroplasty, in the form of exercise therapy, education alone, or both together, improves postoperative outcomes, such as physical functioning, compared with no intervention. Materials and Methods: A systematic literature search was performed in the online databases PubMed, PEDro and Cochrane Library using the following search keywords: "prehabilitation", "preoperative care", and "total hip replacement". Results: A total of 400 potentially relevant studies were identified. After title, abstract and full-text screening, 14 studies fulfilled all inclusion criteria and were included in this systematic review. Patients who completed exercise-based prehabilitation before their operation showed significant postoperative improvements compared with no intervention in the following tests: six-minute walk test, Timed Up and Go test, chair-rise test, and stair climbing. For various other assessments, such as the widely used Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Hip disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HOOS), 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36) and Barthel Index, no significant differences in outcomes regarding exercise therapy were reported in the included studies. Education alone had no effect on postoperative outcomes. Conclusions: Prehabilitation in the form of a prehabilitation exercise therapy is an effective prehabilitation measure with regard to postoperative physical functioning, while prehabilitation in the form of education has no significant effects. No negative effects of prehabilitation on the outcomes examined were reported.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of music and preoperative education on anxiety, physiological responses, length of hospital stay, and quality of life in Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery (CABG) patients. DESIGN: This was a non-randomized quasi-experimental study. METHODS: For this study, 214 patients were separated into an experimental and control group. A dual intervention using preoperative education and a CD with classical Turkish music was applied to the experimental group. The control group was provided with an uninterrupted rest period at the same time. The primary outcome was the difference in anxiety of the patients. Other outcomes included differences in the physiological responses, length of hospital stay, and quality of life. FINDINGS: Anxiety decreased in the preoperative and postoperative periods in both groups (P = .000), and patients' anxiety level in the experimental group was lower than the control group (P = .000). The experimental group patients had a decrease in systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate in the preoperative period (P = .000), and all physiological responses in the postoperative period were lower than the control group (P = .000). Furthermore, the experimental group's length of hospital stay was shorter (5.8 ± 1 days), and their quality of life was better (P = .000). CONCLUSIONS: The dual integrative nursing intervention (music and preoperative education) was effective in reducing anxiety in CABG patients. The results of the study will contribute to nonpharmacological approaches in the management of anxiety in CABG patients.
