ABSTRACT
Patterns of genetic variation in crops are the result of multiple processes that have occurred during their domestication and improvement, and are influenced by their wild progenitors that often remain understudied. The locoto chile, Capsicum pubescens, is a crop grown mainly in mid-highlands of South-Central America. This species is not known from the wild and exists only as a cultigen. The evolutionary affinities and exact origin of C. pubescens have still not been elucidated, with hypotheses suggesting its genetic relatedness and origin to two wild putative ancestral Capsicum species from the Central Andes, C. eximium and C. cardenasii. In the current study, RAD-sequencing was applied to obtain genome-wide data for 48 individuals of C. pubescens and its wild allies representing different geographical areas. Bayesian, Maximum Likelihood and coalescent-based analytical approaches were used to reconstruct population genetic patterns and phylogenetic relationships of the studied species. The results revealed that C. pubescens forms a well-defined monotypic lineage closely related to wild C. cardenasii and C. eximium, and also to C. eshbaughii. The primary lineages associated with the diversification under domestication of C. pubescens were also identified. Although direct ancestor-descendant relationship could not be inferred within this group of taxa, hybridization events were detected between C. pubescens and both C. cardenasii and C. eximium. Therefore, although hybrid origin of C. pubescens could not be inferred, gene flow involving its wild siblings was shown to be an important factor contributing to its contemporary genetic diversity. The data allowed for the inference of the center of origin of C. pubescens in central-western Bolivia highlands and for better understanding of the dynamics of its gene pool. The results of this study are essential for germplasm conservation and breeding purposes, and provide excellent basis for further research of the locoto chile and its wild relatives.

This breeding project, initiated at the United States Potato Genebank (USPG) in collaboration with Peruvian partners Instituto Nacional de Innovacion Agraria (INIA), International Potato Center, Peru (CIP), and local farmers, sought to enhance cold hardiness and frost tolerance in native potato cultivars in Peru. The Andes and Altiplano are often affected by frost, which causes significant reduction in yield; creating varieties with superior resilience is a critical undertaking. The goal was to transfer outstanding non-acclimated cold tolerance and acclimation capacity found in wild potato species Solanum commersonii (cmm). Breeding families segregating for cold hardiness were created using (a) a somatic hybrid cmm + haploid Solanum tuberosum (tbr) (cv. Superior, US variety from Wisconsin) as male and (b) seven cultivars native to Peru of the species S. tuberosum sbsp. andigenum (adg) as females. All plant materials were part of the USPG germplasm collection. Sexual seeds of each family were sent to Peru for evaluations under the natural conditions of the Andean highlands and Altiplano. The plants were assessed for their response to frost, and genotypes showing exceptional tolerance were selected. Plants were also evaluated for good tuber traits and yield. Initial planting involving ~2,500 seedlings in five locations resulted in selecting 58 genotypes with exceptional frost tolerance, good recovery capacity after frost, and good tuber traits. Over the years, evaluations continued and were expanded to replicated field trials in the harsher conditions of the Altiplano (Puno). All trials confirmed consistency of frost tolerance over time and location, tuber quality, and yield. After 8 years, two advanced clones were considered for cultivar release because of their exceptional frost tolerance and superior field productivity that outyielded many of the established cultivars in the region. In November 2018, a new native cultivar named Wiñay, a Quechua word meaning "to grow" was released in Peru. In 2022, a second cultivar followed with the name Llapanchispaq (meaning "for all of us"). This project evidenced that a multinational and all-encompassing approach to deploy valuable genetic diversity can work and deliver effective results. This is even more significant when outcomes can promote food security and sustainability in very vulnerable regions of the world.

Purpose: To analyze and compare metabolic, lifestyle and mental health parameters in relatives and people-with-T2DM (PDM) with and without support. Patients and Methods: We included 160 patients with <5 years of diagnosis of T2DM, without disabling complications, and non-smokers, attending a multidisciplinary program for diabetes control, and their accompanying relatives. If the patients or relatives abandoned the program, we contacted them and asked to take laboratory tests and answer surveys regarding anxiety, depression, and perception of their family support. Variables distribution was assessed with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. We used ANOVA or Kruskal Wallis Tests, according to variable distribution. Frequencies and percentages are used for categorical values and analyzed with a chi-square test. We separated the participants in four groups: relatives with and without support and PDM with and without support. Results: We included 160 participants, age 51±10, and 54.3% women. Total cholesterol (188±36 vs 204±43 vs 170±34 vs 181±35 mg/dL, p=0.001), LDL-cholesterol (113±35 vs 125±27 vs 101 ±30 vs 109±29, p=0.008), and non-HDL cholesterol (143±32 vs 154 ±30 vs 129±33 vs 135±35 mg/dL, p=0.010) were higher in the group without support. Although patients without family support had lower values, they did not achieve metabolic goals. Weight (75±17 vs 77±19 vs 74.2±10.5 vs 90.2±17.3 kg) and body mass index (28.9±4.8 vs 30.1±4.7 vs 27.4±3.3 vs 33±4.3 kg/m2) were higher in PDM without family support (p<0.001 for both). Conclusion: Support in PDM and their families is important in metabolic control. However, raising awareness among family members to screen for diabetes and changes in lifestyle are points to improve. Including the evaluation of social and family support will allow a more complete assessment to identify barriers to achieving goals.

Objetivo: Identificar as estratégias disponíveis na literatura internacional que forneça métodos de autoajuda para pacientes em cuidados paliativos e seus familiares. Método: Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura, realizada entre abril e maio de 2022, utilizando as bases de dados e bibliotecas online Medline, Scielo, Scopus, CINAHL e Web of Science. Os estudos foram selecionados de forma rigorosa, através da utilização de diferentes combinações dos MESH's e palavras chaves self-help, groups, palliative care, medicine in literature, literature, health, disease com o operador booleano AND. Foi utilizado um aplicativo online de gerenciamento de revisões, Rayyan - Intelligent Systematic Review, sendo realizada a dupla verificação cega. Na busca primária foram encontrados 3259 estudos, após a aplicação dos critérios de exclusão 16 artigos compuseram o corpus de análise que usou como forma de apreciação a metodologia descritiva. Resultados: Obteve-se como principais achados a utilização de grupos de autoajuda como uma importante estratégia para auxiliar pacientes e familiares em situações desafiadoras que cernem o final de vida, outras estratégias foram vislumbradas como o uso de cartilhas, espaços e programas, que tendem a auxiliar nos momentos em que é necessário a comunicação de más notícias ou passar por situações de perda antecipatória e luto. Houve a predominância de estudos de abordagem qualitativa, e em maioria realizados na Suécia. Conclusão: Evidenciou-se que a estratégia dominante foi os grupos de autoajuda, que demonstraram ser um espaço de troca de conhecimento e experiências pessoais, entre os indivíduos participantes.

Conclusión: Se evidenció que la estrategia dominante fueron los grupos de autoayuda, que demostraron ser un espacio para el intercambio de información conocimientos y experiencias personales entre las personas participantes.
Objective: To identify the strategies available in the international literature that provide self-help methods for palliative care patients and their family members. Method: This is an integrative literature review conducted between April and May 2022 in the following online databases and libraries: Medline, Scielo, Scopus, CINAHL and Web of Science. The studies were selected rigorously using different combinations of MESH terms and keywords self-help, groups, palliative care, medicine in literature, literature, health, disease; with the AND Boolean operator. An online review management app was used, Rayyan - Intelligent Systematic Review, performing a double-blind check. ABSTRACT
Cucurbita ficifolia is a squash grown from Mexico to Bolivia. Its ancestor is unknown, but it has limited compatibility with wild xerophytic Cucurbita from Mexico's highlands. We assembled the reference genome of C. ficifolia and assessed the genetic diversity and historical demography of the crop in Mexico with 2524 nuclear single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We also evaluated the gene flow between C. ficifolia and xerophytic taxa with 6292 nuclear and 440 plastome SNPs from 142 individuals sampled in 58 sites across their area of sympatry. Demographic modelling of C. ficifolia supports an eight-fold decrease in effective population size at about 2409 generations ago (95% CI = 464-12,393), whereas plastome SNPs support the expansion of maternal lineages ca. 1906-3635 years ago. Our results suggest a recent spread of C. ficifolia in Mexico, with high genetic diversity (π = 0.225, FST = 0.074) and inbreeding (FIS = 0.233). Coalescent models suggest low rates of gene flow with C. radicans and C. pedatifolia, whereas ABBA-BABA tests did not detect significant gene flow with wild taxa. Despite the ecogeographic proximity of C. ficifolia and its relatives, this crop persists as a highly isolated lineage of puzzling origin.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the level of anxiety and depression in relatives of critically ill COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), and to perform an exploratory pilot study on the implementation of telephone psychological interventions to reduce the initial levels of anxiety and depression in this population. Patients and Methods: Family members of COVID-19 inpatients at ICU answered GAD-7, PHQ-9 and questions on socio-demographic data. A brief psychological intervention was applied via telephone based on the needs of the participants (with adequate adaptation, with symptoms of anxiety, depression, or both). After intervention, participants completed the Patient Global Impression of Change Scale. Results: A total of 1307 relatives were included (66.5% female), 34% and 29% had anxiety and depressive symptoms, respectively. These symptoms were associated with female gender, unemployment, and being the parent or partner of the patient. After intervention, 57.9% reported felt better, 31.3% a little better and 6.6% much better; and with emotional regulation techniques and psychoeducation, higher percentages of feeling better or much better were reported. Conclusion: Brief interventions to reduce the psychological impact of inpatient family members could be effective but will need to be explored further in future studies.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gigantism is a key component of the domestication syndrome, a suite of traits that differentiates crops from their wild relatives. Allometric gigantism is strongly marked in horticultural crops, causing disproportionate increases in the size of edible parts such as stems, leaves or fruits. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) has attracted attention as a model for fruit gigantism, and many genes have been described controlling this trait. However, the genetic basis of a corresponding increase in size of vegetative organs contributing to isometric gigantism has remained relatively unexplored. METHODS: Here, we identified a 0.4-Mb region on chromosome 7 in introgression lines (ILs) from the wild species Solanum pennellii in two different tomato genetic backgrounds (cv. 'M82' and cv. 'Micro-Tom') that controls vegetative and reproductive organ size in tomato. The locus, named ORGAN SIZE (ORG), was fine-mapped using genotype-by-sequencing. A survey of the literature revealed that ORG overlaps with previously mapped quantitative trait loci controlling tomato fruit weight during domestication. KEY RESULTS: Alleles from the wild species led to lower cell number in different organs, which was partially compensated by greater cell expansion in leaves, but not in fruits. The result was a proportional reduction in leaf, flower and fruit size in the ILs harbouring the alleles from the wild species. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that selection for large fruit during domestication also tends to select for increases in leaf size by influencing cell division. Since leaf size is relevant for both source-sink balance and crop adaptation to different environments, the discovery of ORG could allow fine-tuning of these parameters.

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a new online program (Minds Together ) for carers of a person with depressive or anxiety symptoms. Methods: Using a two-arm randomised controlled trial design, 108 carers of a person with depressive or anxiety symptomology aged 16 years or over (89% female; mean age 50 years) received immediate or delayed access to the Minds Together program. Feasibility was measured using program activation and survey completion rates. Acceptability was measured using a project-speciï¬c satisfaction scale, semi-structured interviews, and program completion metadata. The study used intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis for participant-reported outcomes (carer burden, coping self-eï¬cacy) across groups. Results: Feasibility and acceptability thresholds were consistent with similar studies: 59% activated their program account, 47% met the program completion threshold, and almost all reported satisfaction with the program. The ITT indicated trends in increased coping self-eï¬cacy and reduced carer burden for the Intervention group, compared to the Waitlist control. Conclusions: The Minds Together program is a feasible and acceptable program for carers supporting a person with depressive or anxiety symptomology. Results support exploration of the program's eï¬cacy in a full-scale RCT.
Objetivo: Evaluar la factibilidad y aceptabilidad de un nuevo programa en línea (Minds Together) para cuidadores de una persona con síntomas depresivos o ansiosos. Métodos: utilizando un diseño de ensayo controlado aleatorio de dos brazos, 108 cuidadores de personas con sintomatología depresiva o ansiosa de 16 años o más (89% mujeres; edad media, 50 años) recibieron acceso inmediato o diferido al programa Minds Together. La viabilidad se midió utilizando la activación del programa y las tasas de ï¬nalización de la encuesta. La aceptabilidad se midió utilizando una escala de satisfacción especíï¬ca del proyecto, entrevistas semiestructuradas y metadatos de ï¬nalización del programa. El estudio utilizó el análisis por intención de tratar (ITT) para los resultados informados por los participantes (carga del cuidador, autoeï¬cacia de afrontamiento) en todos los grupos. Resultados: Los umbrales de viabilidad y aceptabilidad fueron consistentes con estudios similares: el 59% activó su cuenta del programa, el 47% alcanzó el umbral de ï¬nalización del programa y casi todos informaron satisfacción con el programa. El ITT indicó tendencias en el aumento de la autoeï¬cacia de afrontamiento y la reducción de la carga del cuidador para el grupo de Intervención, en comparación con el control de la Lista de Espera. Conclusiones: El programa Minds Together es un programa factible y aceptable para los cuidadores que apoyan a una persona con sintomatología depresiva o ansiosa. Los resultados respaldan la exploración de la eï¬cacia del programa en un RCT a gran escala.

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder (BD) has been associated with a decrease in white matter integrity. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies have enabled these changes to be elucidated with higher quality. Due to BD's high heritability, some studies have been conducted in relatives of BD patients looking at white matter integrity, and have found that structural connectivity may also be affected. This alteration has been proposed as a potential BD biomarker of vulnerability. However, there are few studies in children and adolescents. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a review of the literature on changes in white matter integrity determined by DTI in high-risk children and adolescents. RESULTS: Brain structural connectivity in the paediatric population is described in studies using DTI. Changes in the myelination process from its evolution within normal neurodevelopment to the findings in fractional anisotropy (FA) in BD patients and their high-risk relatives are also described. CONCLUSIONS: Studies show that both BD patients and their at-risk relatives present a decrease in FA in specific brain regions. Studies in children and adolescents with a high risk of BD, indicate a reduced FA in axonal tracts involved in emotional and cognitive functions. Decreased FA can be considered as a vulnerability biomarker for BD.

PREMISE: The central Oaxaca Basin has a century-long history of agave cultivation and is hypothesized to be the region of origin of other cultivated crops. Widely cultivated for mezcal production, the perennial crop known as "espadín" is putatively derived from wild Agave angustifolia. Nevertheless, little is known about its genetic relationship to the wild A. angustifolia or how the decades-long clonal propagation has affected its genetics. METHODS: Using restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing and over 8000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms, we studied aspects of the population genomics of wild and cultivated A. angustifolia in Puebla and Oaxaca, Mexico. We assessed patterns of genetic diversity, inbreeding, distribution of genetic variation, and differentiation among and within wild populations and plantations. RESULTS: Genetic differentiation between wild and cultivated plants was strong, and both gene pools harbored multiple unique alleles. Nevertheless, we found several cultivated individuals with high genetic affinity with wild samples. Higher heterozygosity was observed in the cultivated individuals, while in total, they harbored considerably fewer alleles and presented higher linkage disequilibrium compared to the wild plants. Independently of geographic distance among sampled plantations, the genetic relatedness of the cultivated plants was high, suggesting a common origin and prevalent role of clonal propagation. CONCLUSIONS: The considerable heterozygosity found in espadín is contained within a network of highly related individuals, displaying high linkage disequilibrium generated by decades of clonal propagation and possibly by the accumulation of somatic mutations. Wild A. angustifolia, on the other hand, represents a significant genetic diversity reservoir that should be carefully studied and conserved.

Introducción: El trastorno afectivo bipolar (TAB) se ha asociado con una disminución de la integridad de la sustancia blanca. Los estudios con imágenes con tensor de difusión (DTI) han permitido elucidar con una mayor calidad estos cambios. Debido a la gran heredabilidad del TAB, se han realizado estudios en familiares de pacientes con TAB acerca de la integridad de la sustancia blanca, y se ha encontrado que la conectividad estructural también puede estar afectada. Dicha alteración se ha propuesto como un potencial biomarcador de vulnerabilidad a este trastorno. Sin embargo, los estudios en niños y adolescentes son pocos. Objetivo: Revisar la literatura sobre los cambios en la integridad de la sustancia blanca determinados mediante DTI en niños y adolescentes con alto riesgo. Resultados: Se describe la conectividad estructural cerebral en la población pediátrica en estudios que utilizaron DTI. Se describen los cambios en el proceso de mielinización desde su evolución dentro del neurodesarrollo normal hasta los hallazgos en la anisotropía fraccional (AF) en pacientes con TAB y los familiares en alto riesgo. Conclusiones: Los estudios demuestran que tanto pacientes con TAB como sus familiares en riesgo presentan disminución de la AF en regiones cerebrales específicas. Los estudios en niños y adolescentes con riesgo familiar de TAB señalan una AF reducida en tractos axonales implicados en funciones emocionales y cognitivas. La disminución de la AF puede considerarse como un biomarcador de vulnerabilidad al TAB.

ABSTRACT
Several Mesoamerican crops constitute wild-to-domesticated complexes generated by multiple initial domestication events, and continuous gene flow among crop populations and between these populations and their wild relatives. It has been suggested that the domestication of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) started in the northwest of the Yucatán Peninsula, from where it spread to other regions inside and outside of Mexico. We tested this hypothesis by assembling chloroplast genomes of 23 wild, landraces, and breeding lines (transgene-introgressed and conventional). The phylogenetic analysis showed that the evolutionary history of cotton in Mexico involves multiple events of introgression and genetic divergence. From this, we conclude that Mexican landraces arose from multiple wild populations. Our results also revealed that their structural and functional chloroplast organizations had been preserved. However, genetic diversity decreases as a consequence of domestication, mainly in transgene-introgressed (TI) individuals (π = 0.00020, 0.00001, 0.00016, 0, and 0, of wild, TI-wild, landraces, TI-landraces, and breeding lines, respectively). We identified homologous regions that differentiate wild from domesticated plants and indicate a relationship among the samples. A decrease in genetic diversity associated with transgene introgression in cotton was identified for the first time, and our outcomes are therefore relevant to both biosecurity and agrobiodiversity conservation.

Parents and siblings of children on the autism spectrum experience significant distress, and for this reason, it is essential to understand the most prevalent psychopathological symptoms among this population. This work aims to establish the prevalence of psychopathological symptoms in parents and siblings of individuals on the autism spectrum, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses Protocols (PRISMA-P) criteria. Searches were carried out using the PubMed/Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, SciELO, and Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) databases. Twenty-three articles were included in this review. Depressive symptoms were the most frequently reported conditions, with a higher prevalence in mothers of children on the autism spectrum. In the meta-analysis, mothers of children on the autism spectrum scored higher by 0.42 standard deviations on the symptom scales (SMD 0.42; CI 0.25-0.59), with low statistical heterogeneity (I2 0%, p = 0.5) when compared with mothers of children with atypical development. The psychopathological symptoms of relatives should be investigated as part of the follow-up procedures for the child on the autism spectrum to facilitate their treatment.

Crop wild relatives (CWRs) are important sources of novel genes, due to their high variability of response to biotic and abiotic stresses, which can be invaluable for crop genetic improvement programs. Recent studies have shown that CWRs are threatened by several factors, including changes in land-use and climate change. A large proportion of CWRs are underrepresented in genebanks, making it necessary to take action to ensure their long-term ex situ conservation. With this aim, 18 targeted collecting trips were conducted during 2017/2018 in the center of origin of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), targeting 17 diverse ecological regions of Peru. This was the first comprehensive wild potato collection in Peru in at least 20 years and encompassed most of the unique habitats of potato CWRs in the country. A total of 322 wild potato accessions were collected as seed, tubers, and whole plants for ex situ storage and conservation. They belonged to 36 wild potato species including one accession of S. ayacuchense that was not conserved previously in any genebank. Most accessions required regeneration in the greenhouse prior to long-term conservation as seed. The collected accessions help reduce genetic gaps in ex situ conserved germplasm and will allow further research questions on potato genetic improvement and conservation strategies to be addressed. These potato CWRs are available by request for research, training, and breeding purposes under the terms of the International Treaty for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) from the Instituto Nacional de Innovacion Agraria (INIA) and the International Potato Center (CIP) in Lima-Peru.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by joint inflammation and destruction. OBJECTIVE: Establish the association between Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) infection, body mass index (BMI), joint involvement, and serum adipokines in first-degree relatives (FDR) of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: The cross-sectional study evaluated 124 FDR and 124 healthy controls (HC). The clinical examination included joint and radiographic evaluation and calculation of BMI. Serum adipokine levels were measured (leptin, vaspin, adiponectin, resistin, and adipsin), as were the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and anti-citrullinated protein antibodies. Investigations were performed to detect P. gingivalis, and anti-P. gingivalis antibodies. Statistical analyses were performed to confirm associations. RESULTS: Leptin levels in FDR were associated with BMI >25 (OR, 2.64; 95%CI, 1.17-5.97; P=0.019), radiographic damage (Simple Erosion Narrowing Score [SENS])/hands, total SENS, and joint space narrowing in feet (P=0.037, 0.026, 0.020, respectively). FDR had more tender joints (P=0.018); this finding was associated with high levels of leptin and resistin and low levels of adipsin (P=0.040, 0.040, and 0.019, respectively). The presence of P. gingivalis was related to FDR, low levels of adipsin, resistin, adiponectin, and a trend toward higher levels of leptin (P=0.002, 0.001, 0.003, and 0.060, respectively), whereas anti-P. gingivalis antibodies were related to low levels of adipsin (P=0.001). CONCLUSION: In FDR, serum adipokine levels were associated with overweight and the presence of P. gingivalis. Adipokine levels were also associated with joint involvement. Hence, adipokines may be involved in the pathogenesis of RA in FDR and warrant further investigation.

Objective: to identify the prevalence and characteristics of family caregivers of people with mental disorders who, based on their care history, experienced disruptions related to work, study, leisure, and interpersonal relationships. Method: a cross-sectional study was conducted with 537 family members of users of Psychosocial Care Centers in the 21st Health Region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Results: among the disruptions studied, the most prevalent related to leisure (38.7%), home visits by friends or family (34.3%) and work (33.9%). For disruptions in studies and romantic relationships, prevalence corresponded to 9.9% and 8.6% respectively. Among the characteristics related to these disruptions, there were lower education levels, lower income, and a greater degree of dependence of the assisted user. Conclusion: through this study, it was possible to deepen the investigations about some repercussions in the lives of family members of people with mental disorders.(AU)
Objetivo: identificar a prevalência e as características de familiares de pessoas com transtornos mentais que, a partir da experiência do cuidado, vivenciaram rupturas relacionadas ao trabalho, estudo, lazer e relacionamentos interpessoais. Método: estudo transvers al com 537 familiares de usuários de Centros de Atenção Psicossocial da 21ª Região de Saúde do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Resultados: entre as rupturas estudadas, as mais prevalentes foram relacionadas ao lazer (38,7%), frequência da casa de amigos ou fa miliares (34,3%) e trabalho (33,9%). Para as rupturas de estudos e relacionamentos amorosos, as prevalências corresponderam à 9,9% e 8,6% respectivamente. Entre as características relacionadas a essas rupturas, estiveram menor escolaridade, menor renda e maior grau de dependência do usuário assistido. Conclusão: por meio deste estudo, foi possível aprofundar as investigações sobre algumas repercussões na vida dos familiares de pessoas com transtorno mental.(AU)

Método: se realizó un estudio transversal con 537 familiares de usuarios de los Centros de Atención Psicosocial de la Región 21 de Salud del Estado de Rio Grande do Sul. Resultados: entre las rupturas estudiadas, las más frecuentes se relacionaron con actividades de ocio (38.7%), visitas a casa de amigos o familiares (34.3%) y trabajo (33.9%). La prevalencia de rupturas con estudios y relaciones amorosas fue 9.9% y 8.6% respectivamente. Entre las características relacionadas con esas rupturas están bajo nivel educativo, bajos ingresos económicos y mayor grado de dependencia del usuario asistido. Conclusión: a partir de este estudio se logró profundizar las investigaciones sobre algunas repercusiones en la vida de familiares de personas con trastornos mentales.(AU)

Alongside the use of fertilizer and chemical control of weeds, pests, and diseases modern breeding has been very successful in generating cultivars that have increased agricultural production several fold in favorable environments. These typically homogeneous cultivars (either homozygous inbreds or hybrids derived from inbred parents) are bred under optimal field conditions and perform well when there is sufficient water and nutrients. However, such optimal conditions are rare globally; indeed, a large proportion of arable land could be considered marginal for agricultural production. Marginal agricultural land typically has poor fertility and/or shallow soil depth, is subject to soil erosion, and often occurs in semi-arid or saline environments. Moreover, these marginal environments are expected to expand with ongoing climate change and progressive degradation of soil and water resources globally. Crop wild relatives (CWRs), most often used in breeding as sources of biotic resistance, often also possess traits adapting them to marginal environments. Wild progenitors have been selected over the course of their evolutionary history to maintain their fitness under a diverse range of stresses. Conversely, modern breeding for broad adaptation has reduced genetic diversity and increased genetic vulnerability to biotic and abiotic challenges. There is potential to exploit genetic heterogeneity, as opposed to genetic uniformity, in breeding for the utilization of marginal lands. This review discusses the adaptive traits that could improve the performance of cultivars in marginal environments and breeding strategies to deploy them.

Few studies have explored the differences in clinical psychopathology between youth at high risk for psychosis and those at familial high risk for psychosis. This study seeks to describe and compare the sociodemographic, clinical, and functional characteristics of At-Risk Mental State (ARMS) for psychosis youth and those with a first- or second-degree relative with psychosis (Familial High-Risk: FHR) in a Mexican sample. Twenty-one ARMS individuals and 21 with FHR were evaluated for sociodemographic characteristics, psychopathological symptoms, and functional impairment. ARMS individuals were significantly younger, had fewer years of schooling, and were more likely to be male than those in the FHR group. Groups did not differ as regards marital status or occupation. The ARMS group showed greater severity of prodromal symptoms, schizotypal personality traits, and general psychopathology than the FHR group. In addition, they reported more premorbid adjustment deficit from early adolescence than the FHR group. Current overall social and role functioning was significantly lower in the ARMS group. Findings are consistent with ARMS studies from other countries. First- or second-degree relatives of patients with psychosis should be considered a vulnerable group as they display several symptoms of general psychopathology and may experience social adjustment problems in their adult lives. The lack of early detection and intervention psychosis programs in Mexico underlines the need to prioritize the development of preventive strategies to help close the care gap.

We aimed to investigate the relationship between HLA alleles in patients with type 1 diabetes from an admixed population and the reported race/skin color of their relatives. This cross-sectional, multicenter study was conducted in public clinics in nine Brazilian cities and included 662 patients with type 1 diabetes and their relatives. Demographic data for patients and information on the race/skin color and birthplace of their relatives were obtained. Typing of the HLA-DRB1, -DQA1, and -DQB1 genes was performed. Most studied patients reported having a White relative (95.17%), and the most frequently observed allele among them was DRB1*03:01. Increased odds of presenting this allele were found only in those patients who reported having all White relatives. Considering that most of the patients reported having a White relative and that the most frequent observed allele was DRB1*03:01 (probably a European-derived allele), regardless of the race/skin color of their relatives, we conclude that the type 1 diabetes genotype comes probably from European, Caucasian ethnicity. However, future studies with other ancestry markers are needed to fill the knowledge gap regarding the genetic origin of the type 1 diabetes genotype in admixed populations such as the Brazilian.
