ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Mexico is under-represented in global neurosurgical research. High-income countries represent roughly 10% of the world's population but utilize about 90% of the research funding for medical research, highlighting the need for promoting research initiatives in low- and middle-income countries. We present an online-based research initiative in Mexico that aims to reduce the research gap in neurosurgery. METHODS: Implemented in early 2023, our online-based research initiative included weekly modules covering study types, statistical analysis, meta-analysis, and scientific writing. The first cohort of 22 students completed the 12-week program and then served as tutors for subsequent cohorts. The research model was promoted via word of mouth and social media platforms to medical students, graduates, and specialists across Latin America. Post-program, tutors and the author conducted weekly planning sessions to assist with project planning, analysis, and article writing. RESULTS: From 833 registrations, over 800 students completed at least 1 training module. The program published 7 articles and presented 12 abstracts at major international neurosurgical meetings. We performed a bibliographic analysis in PubMed and found that from 2021 to 2022, 33,637 neurosurgical articles were published, with 197 involving collaboration from Mexico (0.5%). From 2023 to 2024, 24,121 articles were published, with 205 involving collaboration from Mexico (0.8%), a significant increase (P < 0.001). Our collaboration contributed to 3.4% of these, representing a significant addition in 2023-2024 (P = 0.026). CONCLUSIONS: This online-based neurosurgical model contributed to 3.4% of the neurosurgical research productivity in Mexico. Our findings suggest that this model can effectively bridge the research gap and enhance scientific contributions in developing countries.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine characteristics of Latin American (LA) productivity in spine surgery published worldwide between 2004 and 2021 compared between periods and global literature. METHODS: A comprehensive search about LA productivity in the field of spine surgery using the Scopus and PubMed databases was performed in February 2022. The results were limited to articles published in indexed journals from 2004 to 2021. RESULTS: A total of 1447 publications were identified in the study period. The number of publications has increased across evaluated decades, with 583 between 2004 and 2013 (58.3/year) and 864 between 2014 and 2021 (108/year), and a yearly increase was demonstrated (P = 0.0001). Comparing the most productive year in the first (2012) and last decade (2020), a 1.79-fold increase was demonstrated. Brazil ranked first in productivity (51.14%), followed by Mexico (26.40%) and Argentina (8.64%). Coluna/Columna published the largest number, with 309 articles (21.35%). The top 10 institutions published at least 475 (32.82%) and the most productive was the University of Campinas (Brazil, 74). CONCLUSIONS: This scientometric study is one of the first regional evaluations worldwide. The number of publications in the spine surgery field in Latin America has continued to increase over evaluated decades from 58.3 per year to 108, and a 1.79-fold increase between the most productive years for each decade. Brazil is still the greatest contributor (51.14%), with Mexico (26.40%) and Argentina (8.64%) as growing contributor countries. Most publications were classified as Level of Evidence 4, and this result reflects the importance of continuous research development in the quality of research for our region.

ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the participation of Psychology in the National System of Science, Technology and Innovation (SNCTI), placing it among the major areas of knowledge. For this purpose, it took the current panorama of research productivity fellowship (PQ) distribution at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) as reference. It presents the distribution of PQ grants by modality and gender to discuss gender inequalities, both in the general sphere of science and within Psychology. Data was collected from the bank of active researcher(s) made available by CNPq in 2019, consisting of 12,917 PQ fellows, including all areas. All major areas of knowledge showed inequalities in access to resources for research promotion, particularly in terms of PQ quota distribution. The results also point to regional inequalities and gender asymmetries in the academic and research career reflected in the quantity and modality of the FP grant in all areas of knowledge, especially Psychology. In the set of quotas made available by CNPq, Psychology, throughout its 60 years of existence, still holds an insignificant percentage. To some extent, this scenario stems from the fact that Psychology is historically marked as a predominantly female profession, as an applied discipline and with little tradition in the scientific field and knowledge production.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Atrazine (ATZ) is one of the most widely used herbicides in the world. A scientometric study was conducted to analyze the evolution of research on ATZ. The study also looked at the use of microalgae and cyanobacteria as biological models for toxicity tests during the period from 1959 to 2019, in the category of toxicology of Web of Science. The results show an increase in the number of scientific publications mainly in the USA, Canada, and China. The majority of papers was published in journals with high impact factors, demonstrating the relevance of such studies. About 83% of the studies aimed to evaluate the effect of ATZ on non-target organisms. From those, 7.5% included microalgae and cyanobacteria. The majority of them worked with chlorophyceae to perform toxicity bioassays of ATZ and analyze its sublethal effects. The gaps identified by this analysis included a small number of collaborations between research groups from different countries; the number of studies with terrestrial organisms, which are larger in comparison to aquatic organisms; and the fact that none of the studies with ATZ and microalgae was performed in the field. These findings can point out to researchers and funding agencies the gaps in knowledge on the toxic effects of ATZ and guide the development of new research projects as well as environmental policies.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Biomedical research and publications provide evidence-based information about the extent and burden of health-related problems of a country and help to formulate strategic and operational plans to tackle the problems. PURPOSE: To determine the biomedical publication rates of CARICOM full member countries. METHODS: Biomedical publications of full member CARICOM countries were retrieved using PubMed (1990-2015) and SCImago Journal & Country Rank (1996-2015) databases. CARICOM countries having >50 publications in the PubMed (1990-2015) database were subject to further analysis, whereby publications of each country were adjusted by total population (million population), gross domestic product (billion-dollar), and Internet usage rate (hundred thousand population). RESULTS: Total publications by all countries were 7281 and 8378 in PubMed and SCImago Journal & Country Rank, respectively. Jamaica produced highest number of publications (PubMed: 3928 (53.9%); SCImago Journal & Country Rank: 2850 (34.0%)). In both databases, Grenada had the highest research publications when adjusted with per million population (4721 and 10,633), per billion gross domestic product (803 and 1651), and per hundred thousand Internet users (1487 and 3387). Trend analysis revealed Jamaica produced the highest number of additional PubMed listed publications each year, averaging 4.8/year, followed by Trinidad and Tobago (4.4). According to SCImago Journal & Country Rank, Jamaica also had the highest number of citations (42,311) and h-index (76), followed by Trinidad and Tobago (29,152 and 71). Barbados had the highest number of citations per document (24.9), followed by Haiti (18.4). The publication rates determined by PubMed and SCImago Journal & Country Rank databases were significantly correlated (p < 0.001). Most publications (68% SCImago Journal & Country Rank and 85% PubMed) can be attributed to authors affiliated with Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad. CONCLUSION: Publication and citation rates varied markedly between CARICOM countries and were in general low. Most publications could be attributed to researchers affiliated with The University of the West Indies. More universities valuing biomedical research are needed in the region, and more resources needed to improve publication rates.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

In this study, data regarding the population of productivity fellows from the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), Committee of Veterinary Medicine, were evaluated by calculation of scientometrical indexes as an effort to examine the profile of researchers from different levels on these parameters. Other variables, such as the place of doctorate studies, gender, institution, and advisory of human resources were also recorded and evaluated. There is a clear predominance of men (72.37%), which are mostly settled in the South and Southeast. Most of the recipients were awarded his doctorate in Brazil. From the analyzed parameters, advisory of human resources is very high at all levels; among the scientometric variables, the citations indexes and h-index are decreasing from the highest level (PQ-1A) to level 2, yet the intragroup variation is very high for these and other derivatives of the H-index. A modification of the h-index, the AWCR index, in which the calculation takes into account the age of articles published and cited, seems more appropriate to stratify the scholarship of fellows. Studies like these could be repeated in the medium term in order to improve the ranking formulas of scholars.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Colombian psychology journals have made great efforts in order to gain visibility in Latin America. They have improved editorial and scientific quality and participated in academic events with a broader geographic and thematic scope. Additionally, they have adopted the principles of open access and learned how to participate in international indexation systems. This article intends to make explicit the routes and trajectories of these changes in productivity and visibility. In a similar fashion, the article points out the importance of integrative strategies in the process of strengthening an academic and research community, able to organize the visibility strategies at all levels, and knowledgeable of its own productive capacity.

ABSTRACT

Conventional approaches for fostering research productivity, such as recruitment and incentives, do relatively little to develop latent capacities in researchers. Six promising unorthodox approaches are the promotion of regular writing, tools for creativity, good luck, happiness, good health and crowd wisdom. These options challenge conventional ideas about research management (AU)
