Abstract Background: Police training is considered high risk and demands physical and mental vigor from the worker before preforming the service. Therefore, sleep quality is important as it directly impacts the health of these workers in several aspects. Furthermore, the lack of sleep quality due to work can negatively influence the quality of life outside of work. Aim: To analyze the influence of sleep quality on the quality of life and work of military police officers. Methods: A quantitative, cross-sectional correlational study, conducted in the first half of 2019 with police officers from three municipalities in Bahia, Brazil. Three instruments were used: sociodemographic and work characteristics; quality of life at work; and sleep quality. The chi-square test was applied for sociodemographic and occupational variations. Subsequently, the Spearman correlation test was applied between sleep quality and the quality of life and work dimensions. Results: Among the 298 police officers the median age was 40 years and the length of service was ≤ 7 years. It was also observed that police officers with poorer sleep quality had an unsatisfactory quality of life at work in all its dimensions (biological/physiological; psychological/behavioral; sociological/relational; economic/political, environmental/organizational). Conclusion: Police officers suffer from poor sleep quality and this negatively influence their quality of life and work. Therefore, there is a need to develop actions in the workplace that may reduce the risks of health problems caused by poor sleep quality.

ABSTRACT

Owing to its remarkable ease of use, ultrasound has recently been explored for stimulating or amplifying immune responses during cancer therapy, termed 'sono-immunotherapy'. Ultrasound can cause immunogenic cell death in cancer cells via thermal and nonthermal effects to regulate the tumor microenvironment, thereby priming anticancer immunity; by integrating well-designed biomaterials, novel sono-immunotherapy approaches with augmented efficacy can also be developed. Here, we review the advances in sono-immunotherapy for cancer treatment and summarize existing limitations along with potential trends. We offer emerging insights into this realm, which might prompt breakthroughs and expand its potential applications to other diseases.

ABSTRACT

Background: Dental implants have become an increasingly popular option for replacing missing teeth, and the prevalence of peri-implantitis has also increased, which is expected to become a public health problem worldwide and cause high economic and health burdens. This scenario highlights the need for new therapeutic options to treat peri-implantitis. Methods: In this study, we proposed a novel sono-responsive antibacterial nanosystem co-loaded with metformin (Met) and bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) to promote efficacy in treating peri-implantitis. We introduced the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as a carrier for hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME) to enhance the antibacterial effect of sonodynamic antibacterial therapy and tested its reactive oxygen species (ROS) production efficiency and bactericidal effect in vitro. Afterward, HMME-loaded ZIF-8, BMP-2-loaded polylactic acid-glycolic acid (PLGA), and Met were incorporated into gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogels to form HMME@ZIF-8/Met/BMP-2@PLGA/GelMA composite hydrogels, and the biocompatibility of which was determined in vitro and in vivo. A bacterial-induced peri-implantitis model in the maxilla of rats was established to detect the effects of the composite hydrogels with adjunctive use of ultrasound on regulating inflammation and promoting bone tissue repair in vivo. Results: The results indicated that HMME@ZIF-8 with ultrasound stimulation demonstrated more better ROS production efficiency and antimicrobial efficacy. The composite hydrogels had good biocompatibility. Ultrasound-assisted application of the composite hydrogels reduced the release of the inflammatory factors IL-6 and TNF-α and reduced bone loss around the implant in rats with bacterial-induced peri-implantitis. Conclusion: Our observations suggest that HMME@ZIF-8 may be a new good sonosensitizer material for sonodynamic antibacterial therapy. The use of HMME@ZIF-8/Met/BMP-2@PLGA/GelMA composite hydrogels in combination with ultrasound can provide a novel option for treating peri-implantitis in the future.

ABSTRACT

Thermosonication (UT) prestress treatments combining with varied fermentation patterns has been revealed as an effective method to regulate post-acidification as exerted by Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (L. delbrueckii), but sono-biochemical controlling mechanisms remain elusive. This study employed physiological and transcriptomic analysis to explore the response mechanism of L. delbrueckii to UT-induced microstress (600 W, 33 kHz, 10 min). UT stress-induced inhibition of acidification of L. delbrueckii during (post)-fermentation was first confirmed, relying on the UT process parameters such as stress exposure duration and UT power. The significantly enhanced membrane permeability in cells treated by 600 W for 10 min than the microbes stressed by 420 W for 20 min suggested the higher dependence of UT-derived stresses on the treatment durations, relative to the ultrasonic powers. In addition, ultrasonication treatment-induced changes in cell membrane integrity enhanced and/or disrupted permeability of L. delbrueckii, resulting in an imbalance in intracellular conditions associated with corresponding alterations in metabolic behaviors and fermentation efficiencies. UT-prestressed inoculum exhibited a 21.46% decrease in the membrane potential during the lag phase compared to untreated samples, with an intracellular pH of 5.68 ± 0.12, attributed to the lower activities of H+-ATPase and lactate dehydrogenase due to UT stress pretreatments. Comparative transcriptomic analysis revealed that UT prestress influenced the genes related to glycolysis, pyruvate metabolism, fatty acid synthesis, and ABC transport. The genes encoding 3-oxoacyl-[acyl-carrier-protein] reductases I, II, and III, CoA carboxylase, lactate dehydrogenase, pyruvate oxidase, glucose-6-phosphate isomerase, and glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase were downregulated, thus identifying the relevance of the UT microstresses-downregulated absorption and utilization of carbohydrates with the attenuated fatty acid production and energy metabolisms. These findings could contribute to provide a better understanding of the inactivated effects on the post-acidification of L. delbrueckii by ultrasonic pretreatments, thus providing theoretical basis for the targeted optimization of acidification inhibition efficiencies for yogurt products during chilled preservation processes.

ABSTRACT

Sonophotodynamic antimicrobial therapy (SPDAT) is recognized as a highly efficient biomedical treatment option, known for its versatility and remarkable healing outcomes. Nevertheless, there is a scarcity of sonophotosensitizers that demonstrate both low cytotoxicity and exceptional antibacterial effectiveness in clinical applications. In this paper, a novel ZnO nanowires (NWs)@TiO2-xNy core-sheath composite was developed, which integrates the piezoelectric effect and heterojunction to build dual built-in electric fields. Remarkably, it showed superb antibacterial effectiveness (achieving 95% within 60 min against S. aureus and ∼100% within 40 min against E. coli, respectively) when exposed to visible light and ultrasound. Due to the continuous interference caused by light and ultrasound, the material's electrostatic equilibrium gets disrupted. The modification in electrical properties facilitates the composite's ability to attract bacterial cells through electrostatic forces. Moreover, Zn-O-Ti and Zn-N-Ti bonds formed at the interface of ZnO NWs@TiO2-xNy, further enhancing the dual internal electric fields to accelerate the excited carrier separation to generate more reactive oxygen species (ROS), and thereby boosting the antimicrobial performance. In addition, the TiO2 layer limited Zn2+ dissolution into solution, leading to good biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. Lastly, we suggest a mechanistic model to offer practical direction for the future development of antibacterial agents that are both low in toxicity and high in efficacy. In comparison to the traditional photodynamic therapy systems, ZnO NWs@TiO2-xNy composites exhibit super piezo-photocatalytic antibacterial activity with low toxicity, which shows great potential for clinical application as an antibacterial nanomaterial.

ABSTRACT

This study demonstrates the potential of sono-photodynamic therapy as an effective approach for enhancing singlet oxygen generation using the synthesized Schiff-base diaxially substituted silicon phthalocyanines. In photochemical studies, the singlet oxygen quantum yields (Φ∆) were determined as 0.43 for Si1a, 0.94 for Q-Si1a, 0.58 for S-Si1a, and 0.49 for B-Sia1. In sono-photochemical studies, the Φ∆ values were reached to 0.67 for Si1a, 1.06 for Q-Si1a, 0.65 for S-Si1a, and 0.67 for B-Sia1. In addition, this study demonstrates the therapeutic efficacy of phthalocyanines synthesized as sensitizers on the PC3 prostate cancer cell line through in vitro experiments. The application of these treatment modalities exhibited notable outcomes, leading to a substantial decrease in cell viability within the PC3 prostate cancer cell line. These findings highlight the potential of utilizing these synthesized phthalocyanines as promising therapeutic agents for prostate cancer treatment.

ABSTRACT

Establishing an advanced ecosystem incorporating freshwater harvesting, plastic utilization, and clean fuel acquisition is profoundly significant. However, low-efficiency evaporation, single energy utilization, and catalyst leakage severely hinder sustainable development. Herein, a nanofiber-based mortise-and-tenon structural Janus aerogel (MTSJA) is strategically designed in the first attempt and supports Z-scheme catalysts. By harnessing of the upper hydrophilic layer with hydrophilic channels embedding into the hydrophobic bottom layer to achieve tailoring bottom wettability states. MTSJA is capable of a fully-floating function for lower heat loss, water supply, and high-efficiency solar-to-vapor conversion. Benefiting from the ultrasonic cavitation effect and high sensitivity of materials to mechanical forces, this is also the first demonstration of synergistic solar and ultrasound fields to power simultaneous evaporation desalination and waste plastics as reusable substrates generating fuel energy. The system enables persistent desalination with an exceptional evaporation rate of 3.1 kg m-2 h-1 and 82.3% efficiency (21 wt.% NaCl solution and 1 sun), and realizes H2, CO, and CH4 yields with 16.1, 9.5, and 3 µmol h-1 g-1, respectively. This strategy holds great potential for desalination and plastics value-added transformation toward clean energy and carbon neutrality.

ABSTRACT

This research study is centered on the sono-assisted photocatalytic degradation of a well-known antibiotic (ciprofloxacin; CIP) in aquatic media using a g-C3N4/NH2-UiO-66 (Zr) catalyst under visible light irradiation. Initially, the catalyst was prepared by a simple method, and its physiochemical features were thoroughly analyzed by XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDX, EDS-Dot-Mapping, and UV-Vis analytical techniques. After that, the impact of several influential factors affecting the performance of the applied sono-assisted photocatalytic process such as the initial concentration of CIP, solution pH, catalyst dosage, light intensity, and ultrasound power was fully assessed, and the optimal conditions were established. After 75 min of the sono-assisted photocatalytic treatment, the complete degradation of CIP (10 mg/L) was accomplished under the condition as follows: g-C3N4/NH2-UiO-66 (Zr), 0.6 g/L; pH, 5.0, and ultrasound power, light intensity 75 mw/cm2, 200 W/m2. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic degradation of CIP followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. In addition, the scavenger experiments demonstrated that OH˚ and O2°- radicals played a key role in the sono-assisted photocatalytic degradation process. It is also acknowledged that the applied catalyst was reused for five consecutive runs with a minor loss observed in its degradation efficiency. In a further experiment, a significant synergistic effect with regard to the degradation of CIP was observed once all three major parameters (visible light, ultrasound waves, and catalyst) were used in combination compared to each used alone. To sum up, it is thought that the integration of g-C3N4/MOF-based catalyst, ultrasound waves, and visible light irradiation could be potentially applied as a promising strategy for the degradation of various pharmaceuticals on account of high degradation performance, simple operation, excellent reusability, and eco-friendly approach.

ABSTRACT

Pickering emulsions stabilized by functional nanoparticles (NPs) have received considerable attention for improving the physical stability and biological function of NPs. Herein, hydrophobic polyphenols were chosen as phenolic ligands to form metal-phenolic network (MPN) coatings on NPs (e.g., silica, polystyrene) mediated by the sono-Fenton reaction. The MPN coatings modulated the surface wettability and charges of NPs and achieved emulsification behavior for preparing Pickering emulsions with pH responsiveness and oxidation resistance. A series of polyphenols, including resveratrol, rutin, naringin, and curcumin, were used to form MPN coatings on NPs, which served as stabilizers for the engineering of functionalized oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsions. This work provides a new avenue for the use of hydrophobic polyphenols to modulate NP emulsifiers, which broadens the application of polyphenols for constructing Pickering emulsions with antioxidant properties.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Dairy foods are nutritional sources of calcium, phosphorus, protein, and other nutrients that improve bone health. However, the effects of dairy consumption on bone biomarkers in the Japanese population remain unclear. This study explored the association between dairy consumption and bone biomarkers in Japanese adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted as part of the Iwaki Health Promotion Project in Aomori, Japan. In total, 1063 adults were included in the analysis. Bone turnover marker levels were measured in local citizens during their annual medical checkups. The calcaneus osteo sono assessment index (OSI) was calculated using a quantitative ultrasound technique. The dietary intake of foods and nutrients was estimated using a food frequency questionnaire. Linear regression models were established using dairy consumption and bone biomarkers with adjustments. Statistic significance was considered by P < 0.05. Results: In multivariate models, the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b and parathyroid hormone concentrations were inversely associated with dietary dairy consumption after adjusting for age and sex. The undercarboxylated osteocalcin, a procollagen type I N-terminal peptide to bone alkaline phosphatase ratio, and OSI were the directly associated with dairy consumption in multivariate models with adjustment. Conclusions: Dairy consumption is partially associated with bone turnover biomarkers and OSI in adult Japanese participants. Habitual consumption of dairy foods may contribute to the nutritional supplementation for maintaining bone health, including turnover and structure. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the diagnostic utility of an immunohistochemical panel including calcium-binding protein P, p53, Ki-67, and SMAD family member 4 and K-ras mutation for diagnosing pancreatic solid lesion specimens obtained by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy and to confirm their usefulness in histologically inconclusive cases. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry and peptide nucleic acid-clamping polymerase chain reaction for K-ras mutation were performed on 96 endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy specimens. The diagnostic efficacy of each marker and the combination of markers was calculated. The diagnostic performances of these markers were evaluated in 27 endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy specimens with histologically inconclusive diagnoses. A classification tree was constructed. RESULTS: K-ras mutation showed the highest accuracy and consistency. Positivity in more than two or three of the five markers showed high diagnostic accuracy (94.6 % and 93.6 %, respectively), and positivity for more than three markers showed the highest accuracy for inconclusive cases (92.0 %). A classification tree using K-ras mutation, Ki-67, S100P, and SMAD4 showed high diagnostic performance, with only two misclassifications in inconclusive cases. CONCLUSIONS: K-ras mutation detection via peptide nucleic acid-clamping polymerase chain reaction is a stable and accurate method for distinguishing between pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and non-pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma lesions. A classification tree using K-ras mutation, Ki-67, S100P, and SMAD4 helps increase the diagnostic accuracy of cases that are histologically difficult to diagnose.

ABSTRACT

During COVID-19, health services and professionals who worked on the front line experienced a challenging scenario with a constant risk of infection by SARS-CoV-2, an increased demand for work, and many uncertainties. This study analyzed the repercussions of COVID-19 on the health of Bahian physical therapists working on the hospital front line. Bahian physical therapists participated in this study, answering questions related to their sociodemographic data, sleep quality, and symptoms of anxiety and depression by an electronic form (Google Forms). Overall, 38 physiotherapists living in Salvador (Bahia) answered this form. In total, 50% worked in Intensive Care Units (ICUs); 65%, in the private sector, and 68% suffered infection from SARS-CoV-2 one or more times. This study found that 77.3% of participants reported the constant fear of infecting their family members and 36% showed emotional exhaustion after working hours; 34.2%, psychological stress; and 26%, physical fatigue. Bahian physical therapists reported that COVID-19 brought major confrontations in the workplace, such as the fear of getting sick and transmitting the disease and, above all, death. Fatigue and psychological stress remained constant in the professional practice, but, despite this, most physical therapists felt satisfied for having acted in such an indispensable way in a delicate and unique moment.

ABSTRACT

In university students, sleep quality and mental health impairments are related to greater daytime dysfunction and lower academic performance. COVID-19 has harmed the quality of sleep and mental health of several population groups. However, more studies are needed to evaluate the quality of sleep and mental health of university students enrolled in health courses during the COVID-19 pandemic. To evaluate the quality of sleep and mental health of university students in healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic and to investigate possible correlations between the aforementioned aspects in this population. An electronic form containing questions to characterize its sample and other specific questionnaires were used in this cross-sectional study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to evaluate sleep quality and the General Health Questionnaire (QSG-12) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) were used to evaluate psychological well-being, anxiety, and depression, respectively. Overall, 324 health students participated in this study. Of these, 87.3% of students had poor sleep quality (≥ 5), 74.1% had impaired mental health, and 73.7% had possible or probable anxiety. Furthermore, the PSQI, QSG-12, and HAD scale values showed a moderately positive correlation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, university students in healthcare experienced significant losses in their sleep quality and mental health. In this context, studies must investigate therapeutic options to mitigate these impacts.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Physiatrists are facing with survivors from disasters in both the acute and chronic phases of muscle and nerve injuries. Similar to many other clinical conditions, neuromusculoskeletal ultrasound can play a key role in the management of such cases (with various muscle/nerve injuries) as well. Accordingly, in this article, a recent single-center experience after the Turkey-Syria earthquake will be rendered. METHODS: Ultrasound examinations were performed for various nerve/muscle lesions in 52 earthquake victims referred from different cities. Demographic features, type of injuries, and applied treatment procedures as well as detailed ultrasonographic findings are illustrated. RESULTS: Of the 52 patients, 19 had incomplete peripheral nerve lesions of the brachial plexus (n=4), lumbosacral plexus (n=1), and upper and lower limbs (n=14). CONCLUSION: The ultrasonographic approach during disaster relief is paramount as regards subacute and chronic phases of rehabilitation. Considering technological advances (e.g., portable machines), the use of on-site ultrasound examination in the (very) early phases of disaster response also needs to be on the agenda of medical personnel.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Non-invasive external energy triggered efficient tumor therapy is a promising specific treatment strategy. Herein, a composite material of bismuth sodium titanate (BNT) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with piezoelectric effect was designed for the synergistic treatment of breast cancer with near-infrared-II (NIR-II) light and ultrasound (US) activation. The BNT@MoS2 exhibit excellent photothermal and acoustic properties upon excitation by 1060 nm NIR-II laser and US, respectively. The synergistic effect of hyperthermia and reactive oxygen species (ROS) under photoacoustic action endows the BNT@MoS2 with remarkable anti-tumor activities, enabling them to eradicate breast cancer cells within 10 min. The work could provide new insights into the treatment of breast cancer.
