ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has tremendously disrupted societal behaviors and norms. People had to cope with new situations, including restrictions on free movement, home confinement, and school closures, among others. With less scope for physical classes, online classes became rampantly common during and after the pandemic. A virtual learning platform cannot replace the societal learning and preparation of children that normally occurs in school settings. The pandemic had a multifaceted impact on children, disrupting their routine work, social life, and mental health. Such uncertain circumstances are bound to interfere with their emotional well-being, with long-term consequences. It is imperative to screen for the effects of the pandemic situation among children for timely action. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was carried out in both rural and urban areas of Puducherry, India, between February and April 2022, toward the fag end of the pandemic. Face-to-face interviews were conducted among caregivers of 621 children aged 6-17 years. Details such as sociodemographic, personal, and behavioral aspects of the child were collected. Emotional and behavioral difficulties during the pandemic were assessed using the parent (caregiver) version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire-25 (SDQ-25). Univariate analysis was performed using the chi-square test. Four different regression models were fitted to ascertain the factors influencing the overall difficulty score as well as the SDQ subscales, namely, the internalizing, externalizing, and prosocial scores. A P value of <0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Overall, 101 (16.3%) children aged 6-17 years were likely to have emotional and behavioral difficulties according to the SDQ scores. Abnormal externalizing, internalizing, and prosocial scores were documented among 160 (25.8%), 258 (41.5%), and 285 (45.9%) children, respectively. Caregivers reported disruptions in their children's academic performance (426, 68.6%), sleeping patterns (269, 43.3%), and eating habits (256, 41.2%). The use of digital devices for noneducational purposes was reported among 97 (35.9%) children. Younger caregivers (18-45 years), children who used digital devices for >2 hours per day, children who experienced any death due to COVID-19 in their family, and caregivers who perceived that the psychological changes in their children were due to the pandemic were predictors of abnormal SDQ scores. Physical activity for more than two hours per day reduced the risk of emotional and behavioral difficulties in children by 60%. CONCLUSIONS: This research underscores the potential ramifications of the pandemic on the mental well-being and lifestyle of children. Implementing initiatives that promote positive mental health and conducting preventive screening for vulnerable populations, such as children, are considered essential, anticipating the challenges posed by such unprecedented pandemic circumstances in the future.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to assist decision-making in anti-bullying interventions by highlighting the importance of positive factors such as gratitude, forgiveness, and self-regulation in mitigating the negative impacts of bullying/cyberbullying. The objective was to examine and synthesize available evidence on the impact of gratitude, forgiveness, and self-regulation practices in the school context regarding bullying/cyberbullying phenomena. Three databases were consulted (Web of Science, Scopus, and Scielo), and the results include 14 articles. The three character strengths were associated with psychological well-being, life and school satisfaction, improved mental health, increased likelihood of engaging in pro-social behavior, and reduced involvement in bullying/cyberbullying situations. These strengths have the potential to enhance overall well-being and decrease risk behaviors, leading to more positive outcomes in experiences of violence. These results underscore the importance of considering students' individual strengths and the possible interventions to promote healthy school environments.

ABSTRACT

In the present study, we explored the relationship between proactive personality and career adaptability to construct a cross-level moderated mediation model based on the conservation of resources (COR) theory. By conducting a time-lagged study involving three data collection points from 587 employees across 104 teams in China, we examined how and when proactive personality predicts employees' career adaptability using strengths use as a mediator and managerial coaching as boundary conditions. The results revealed that proactive personality predicted strengths use, which, in turn, influenced career adaptability, with managerial coaching moderating the indirect relationship between proactive personality and career adaptability. Consequently, our findings suggest that, in contexts where managerial coaching lacks guidance, facilitation, and inspiration, a proactive personality encourages employees to leverage their strengths, subsequently enhancing their career adaptability. Finally, we discuss the theoretical and practical implications of our findings, address limitations, and propose directions for future research.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Quantitative research on vigour as a therapeutically responsive marker of positive mental health, has become possible by virtue of the validation of the Vigour Assessment Scale (VAS). Considering that its validation and therapeutic responsiveness were examined in an avolitional schizophrenia population, using the VAS outside these constraints requires that its psychometric properties be investigated in a more general non-clinical population. METHOD: Social media respondents (n = 787) were recruited on social media through snowball sampling and data were obtained for statistical analyses through an online questionnaire comprising the VAS and measures of work-place vigour, active involvement in personal growth, behavioural activation, procrastination, and fatigue. RESULTS: Convergent validity was confirmed in moderate to strong positive correlations between the VAS and measures approximate to vigour including physical strength (r = 0.805), cognitive liveliness (r = 0.676), planfulness (r = 0.61), and intentional behaviour (r = 0.595). Discriminant validity was evident in negative correlations with procrastination (r = -0.593) and fatigue (r = -0.786). The VAS showed good internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.951), split-half reliability (r = 0.892), test-retest reliability (r = 0.861), and a low standard error of measurement of 3.73 within a theoretical range of 82 points. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a clear two-factor structure. LIMITATIONS: Results are limited to willing participants who responded through social media. CONCLUSIONS: Vigour may now be measured clinically as an indication of positive mental health and well-being. It may also be further investigated for its relations to other parameters of health, personality, and the efficacy of professional and self-enhancing interventions that aim for the cultivation of vigour.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: While the adoption of strengths-based approaches to supporting autistic adolescents is growing in popularity, the application of this approach to a digital arts mentoring program has yet to be explored. This study reports on the core elements contributing to the success of a community digital arts mentoring program for autistic adolescents from the mentors' perspective. This paper presents an in-depth exploration of mentors' experiences, comprising a component of a broader line of research investigating a digital arts mentoring program for autistic adolescents emphasising positive youth development. METHODS: The digital arts mentoring program spanned 20 weeks across two Australian school terms and was attended by two groups of autistic adolescents (N = 18) aged between 11 and 17 years. A qualitative approach was utilised in exploring the perspective of their mentors (N = 6). Qualitative data were collected at the end of each school term for each group with the mentors using an interpretive phenomenological approach and Colaizzi's seven-step analysis method. Thirteen individual interviews were conducted with six mentors. CONSUMER AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: This research was conducted with a disability arts provider to provide a digital arts mentoring program to autistic adolescents. The mentors employed have lived experience with disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety. RESULTS: Five primary themes emerged from the data: positive connections, mentor knowledge and experience, mentoring approaches, autism education, program organisation, resources and environment. Subthemes underpinned the primary themes related to positive connections (three subthemes), mentoring approaches (four subthemes) and program organisation, resources and environment (three subthemes). CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that prior experience, sufficient training, a supportive environment and a flexible and adaptable approach were essential for success. Understanding the core elements of a strengths-based digital arts program in occupational therapy provides a comprehensive framework for utilising clients' inherent strengths and creativity as therapeutic tool, creating an empowering environment, fostering meaningful outcomes for clients.

ABSTRACT

The Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD Symptoms and Normal Behaviour Scale (SWAN) measures the full spectrum of attention and activity symptoms, not just the negative end of the distribution. Previous studies revealed strong psychometric properties of the parent and teacher report versions; however, there is little research on the new self-report form of the SWAN. Therefore, our research aimed to explore the psychometric characteristics of the SWAN self-report. A non-clinical sample of young women (N = 664, mean age: 20.01 years, SD: 3.08 years) completed the SWAN self-report, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the Mental Health Continuum Short Form (MHC-SF). We tested several models using confirmatory factor analyses to assess the factorial validity of the SWAN self-report. Distributional characteristics, convergent, and predictive validity were assessed. A bifactor model with a general factor and a specific inattention factor (bifactor-1) provided the best fit in our data (CFI = 0.977, TLI/NFI = 0.972, RMSEA = 0.053 [90% CI: 0.047 - 0.059], SRMR = 0.061, ω = 0.90). The reliability of the general ADHD factor was good (ωh = 0.87), and the specific inattention factor was acceptable (ωh = 0.73). The distribution of the SWAN self-report scores did not differ from the normal distribution. A strong correlation between the SWAN and the SDQ Hyperactivity subscale was found. The analyses revealed good predictive validity. Our results suggest that the SWAN self-report is a valuable tool for assessing symptoms of ADHD in adolescents and young adults.

AIMS: This study explores how perceived organizational support for strengths use influences nurses' job performance, specifically examining the mediating effects of control beliefs about stress and optimism. BACKGROUND: Identifying factors that enhance job performance is crucial in the demanding field of nursing. Previous research has highlighted the positive impact of perceived organizational support for strengths use on job performance. METHOD: Conducted between May and October 2023, this study involved 653 nurses from various hospital settings across three Chinese provinces. A combination of convenience and snowball sampling methods ensured a representative sample. Questionnaires distributed via an online platform measured variables including perceived organizational support for strengths use, control beliefs about stress, optimism, and job performance. Data analysis utilized SPSS-25 and the PROCESS macro, with correlation and regression analyses examining the relationships between perceived organizational support for strengths use, control beliefs about stress, optimism, and job performance. RESULTS: Perceived organizational support for strengths use positively correlates with control beliefs about stress, optimism, and job performance. Control beliefs about stress and optimism serve as mediators in the relationship between perceived organizational support for strengths use and job performance, both independently and sequentially, with optimism being the more potent mediator. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that control beliefs about stress and optimism independently and sequentially mediate the relationship between perceived organizational support for strengths use and job performance among nurses. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY: This research underscores the importance of creating a work environment that leverages nurses' strengths and fosters their ability to manage stress and maintain optimism in the face of workplace challenges. Such an environment can significantly enhance job performance and overall well-being among nurses.

ABSTRACT

Titanium (Ti), as a hard tissue implant, is facing a big challenge for rapid and stable osseointegration owing to its intrinsic bio-inertness. Meanwile, surface-related infection is also a serious threat. In this study, large-scale quasi-vertically aligned sodium titanate nanowire (SNW) arrayed coatings incorporated with bioactive Cu2+ ions were fabricated through a compound process involving acid etching, hydrothermal treatment (HT), and ion exchange (IE). A novel coating based on sustained ion release and a shape-preserving design is successfully obtained. Cu2+ substituted Na+ in sodium titanate lattice to generate Cu-doped SNW (CNW), which maintains the micro-structure and phase components of the original SNW, and can be efficiently released from the structure by immersing them in physiological saline (PS) solutions, ensuring superior long-term structural stability. The synergistic effects of the acid etching, bidirectional cogrowth, and solution-strengthening mechanisms endow the coating with higher bonding strengths. In vitro antibacterial tests demonstrated that the CNW coatings exhibited effective good antibacterial properties against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria based on the continuous slow release of copper ions. This is an exciting attempt to achieve topographic, hydrophilic, and antibacterial activation of metal implants, demonstrating a paradigm for the activation of coatings without dissolution and providing new insights into insoluble ceramic-coated implants with high bonding strengths.

Background: Among sexual minorities (SMs), experiencing discrimination has been associated with greater substance use at the day-level. However, variations in sample characteristics and measures of day-level discrimination limit the generalizability of findings. Furthermore, it is unknown how positive experiences due to minority identity ("Minority Strengths") may impact the association between experiencing discrimination and same day drinking. Methods: The present study extends prior research on discrimination and drinking using detailed discrimination measures, Minority Strengths measures, and a gender diverse sample. Participants (N = 61) were majority White (n = 45, 73.8 %) adult (mean age 26.8 years) self-identified SMs (e.g., 44.3 % identified as "gay") who engaged in alcohol use within the past month. Participants completed up to 31 days of daily diary surveys about their experiences and drinking. Recruitment took place in the northeastern U.S. from May to December 2021. Results: Multilevel model analysis indicated that experiencing discrimination was associated with increased same day drinking among Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) participants but not among White participants. A significant gender by discrimination interaction indicated that cisgender men drank more the same day they experienced discrimination compared to cisgender women and transgender/non-binary participants. Minority Strengths had no impact on these relationships. Conclusions: Results highlight that the experience of discrimination and its association with drinking may be influenced by a host of contextual factors that are attached to racial and gender identities. Future research should examine how discrimination in different contexts (e.g., regions) and based on specific identities may be associated with alcohol use.

OBJECTIVES: Playfulness describes individual differences in (re)framing situations in a way that they are experienced as interesting, intellectually stimulating, or entertaining. We extended the study of playfulness to groups of middle- and higher age and examined the relations of four facets of playfulness (Other-directed, Lighthearted, Intellectual, and Whimsical) to indicators of positive psychological functioning. METHOD: We collected self-report data from 210 participants aged between 50 and 98 years. RESULTS: The playfulness expressions in this age group were comparable to younger adults. We found that playfulness relates to life satisfaction, the PERMA domains of well-being, and character strengths with small-to-medium correlation effect sizes. The OLIW facets showed differential associations, with regression analyses revealing that particularly Other-directed is positively associated with positive psychological functioning. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the importance of playful relationships across the lifespan. We discuss the findings regarding the role of playfulness for healthy aging.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to determine the most effective method for bonding composite resin to artificially aged amalgam. A spherical amalgam alloy was triturated and condensed by hand into cylindrical plastic molds (6 mm in diameter and 4 mm in height) to create 90 specimens, which were then aged for 2 weeks in closed plastic containers at 23°C. The amalgam surfaces underwent 1 of 3 surface treatments (n = 30 per treatment): (1) air particle abrasion (APA) with 50-µm aluminum oxide particles applied with a force of 45 psi from a 10-mm distance, followed by rinsing with deionized water for 60 seconds; (2) APA following the same protocol with subsequent application of a metal primer (Alloy Primer); or (3) coating with 30-µm silica (CoJet) at a force of 45 psi from a 10-mm distance until the surface turned black. Specimens were then treated with 1 of 3 adhesives (n = 10 per adhesive per surface treatment): (1) 2-step total-etch adhesive (OptiBond Solo Plus), (2) 1-step self-etching adhesive (Scotchbond Universal), or (3) dual-cured resin cement (Panavia F 2.0). Each adhesive was applied to the treated amalgam surfaces following its manufacturer's instructions. The specimens were placed in a bonding clamp, and nanocomposite resin columns, 2.38 mm in diameter and 2.00 mm in height, were photocured (40 seconds, 500 mW/cm2) against the treated amalgam surfaces. The specimens were stored for 24 hours in 37°C deionized water and underwent shear bond strength testing at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Data were analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance and post hoc analysis with the Tukey test at 95% confidence. The mean (SD) shear bond strength values ranged from 12.3 (1.2) MPa for aluminum oxide-treated surfaces bonded with OptiBond Solo Plus to 25.9 (4.6) MPa for silicoated surfaces bonded with Panavia F 2.0. All bonding agents produced the highest shear bond strength when the amalgam surface was silicoated. These results indicate that composite can be effectively bonded to amalgam via silicoating.

ABSTRACT

Our analysis employed the life-course approach to examine whether and how mental health during the preschool stage could predict mental health during adolescence in the Thai context, where migration of parents is common. We used the longitudinal data set of the 2008 and 2021 Child Health and Migrant Parents (CHAMPSEA)-Thailand. The baseline survey of CHAMSEA-Thailand gathered data from 1030 households that met the eligibility criteria, each having a child within one of the two specified age ranges (aged 3-5 or 9-11). Our analysis used the baseline data of children aged 3 to 5 years old who were 16 to 18 years old in the subsequent survey (N = 404). In both surveys, the mental health of children was measured using the SDQ (total difficulties scores), a global standard tool for assessing children's mental health. Parental migration measured whether the parent(s) were international migrants when the child was 3 to 5 years old at the baseline. Results showed a significant, positive impact of the SDQ total difficulties scores of children aged 3 to 5 on their SDQ total difficulties scores when they grew up to 16 to 18 years old. Findings also revealed that experiencing parental international migration during the early life stage led to adverse effects on individuals' mental health when they became adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health affect health behaviors and outcomes. Youth experiencing homelessness suffer significant deprivation of resources such as inadequate housing, reduced education, poor health care, and decreased economic stability. Inner resources, such as psychological capital, may also be related to health behaviors and health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we sought to describe and explore associations among selected determinants of health and self-reported scores on indicators of psychological capital among youth experiencing homelessness. METHODS: This cross-sectional secondary analysis was conducted with a randomized subsample of 148 youth. We calculated chi-square frequencies to describe the data, classical item analyses to evaluate responses, and correlation tests to examine significance of associations. RESULTS: Youth in this sample demonstrated that they possess inner resources associated with determinants of health. Education, health care, and social support were significantly associated with attributes of psychological capital (hope, efficacy, resilience, optimism). Sexual minority groups had high representation in this subsample (25.7%), indicating a need for more study and equitable services for this population. CONCLUSION: More research should be conducted to better understand the associations between determinants of health, psychological capital, and health behaviors among disadvantaged youth to advance health equity initiatives.

ABSTRACT

Background: Targeted interventions have been found effective for developing leadership practices in nurses. However, to date, no leadership training program based on the Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare Leadership approach exists. Objectives: Demonstrate the effectiveness of a Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare Leadership 6-month program designed for nurse and healthcare leaders on leadership capacity and psychological outcomes. Design: Concurrent mixed-methods with nurse and healthcare leaders from five healthcare organisations in Quebec and Ontario (Canada). Settings: Participants were recruited from five Canadian health care organizations: two in Toronto (Ontario) and three in Montreal (Quebec). Participants: A total of 50 nurse leaders and healthcare leaders were included in the quantitative component, and 22 (20 nurse leaders and two healthcare leaders) participated in the qualitative individual interviews. Methods: Quantitative and qualitative (interviews) methods were used. Quantitative data (pre-post surveys) were collected from the participants before their participation in the program (Time 0), as well as after the completion of the program (Time 1). Qualitative data (individual interviews) were collected from participants at the end of the program (Time 1). Analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, paired-sample t-tests, and thematic analysis. Results: Quantitative results suggest a significant improvement in terms of leadership capabilities, work satisfaction, and reduction in perceived stress among participants. Three themes emerged from the qualitative data analysis: 1) focus on people's strengths, 2) structure and language based on Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare values, and 3) building support networks. Conclusions: The Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare Leadership program developed to build the leadership capabilities of nurse and healthcare leaders was found to be effective. The positive impact of the 6-month program was demonstrated. It was also shown that the leadership program can help improve the leadership competencies, well-being, and work satisfaction of participating nurses and healthcare leaders. Implication: This study reinforces the importance of working with educational, research, and healthcare organizations to establish leadership development programs and mentorship opportunities. Future leadership training should use a Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare Leadership lens when tackling leadership and stress in the workplace.

Like all job applicants, veterans have to face the ubiquitous employment interview and pass this potential hurdle to civilian sector employment. So, because of the uniqueness of transitioning from the military to civilian employment, the present paper sought to identify perceived interviewing strengths and weaknesses of veteran interviewees from (a) the perspective of civilian sector human resource professionals (i.e. hiring personnel) with experience interviewing veterans (Study 1, five focus groups, N = 14), and (b) veterans (Study 2, N = 93). Qualitative analysis of the focus group transcripts resulted in the emergence of two theme categories: (1) veteran interviewee strengths and (2) veteran interviewee weaknesses. This information guided the development of a 10-item survey that was completed by 93 veterans (Study 2). In its totality, the results (from both Study 1 and Study 2) indicated that communication of soft skills, confidence, and professionalism were perceived to be strengths that veterans displayed during civilian employment interviews, and conversely, the ineffective translation and communication of relevant technical skills acquired in the military, use of military jargon, and nervousness were considered to be weaknesses. Recommendations to capitalize on the strengths and mitigate the weaknesses are presented.

BACKGROUND: Peer influence, the development of attitudes, and behavioral changes are some of the phenomenal changes that happen in adolescence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was undertaken to find out the association between peer influence and behavior among 355 adolescents within the age group of 16 to 18 years, randomly chosen from Pre-university schools of Udupi district, Karnataka using the Peer Influence Scale (PIS) and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). RESULT: The results indicate that their peers highly influenced 43.9% of the participants. Meanwhile, 23.1% and 7.9% of adolescents who participated in the survey showed borderline and abnormal behavior, respectively. The association between peer influence and behaviour was assessed using the Chi-square test; the results (χ2=14.545, P = 0.001) revealed that peers highly influence adolescent behavior and change adolescent conduct significantly. CONCLUSION: Adolescents should be aware of the accepted and non-accepted behaviors in society and be wise in choosing the right peers who later influence their behavior. Parents need to check the conduct of their children and guide them in developing their identity.

Married individuals and those in committed romantic relationships generally report having better mental health outcomes than their single or divorced counterparts. However, studies of romantic relationships for adults with mental illness have often ignored rewarding aspects of romantic relationships and have focused primarily on relationship difficulties. In this study, 23 adults with serious mental illness in long-term romantic relationships described their relationship strengths and struggles in small focus group discussions. Content analysis was used to characterize themes from participant accounts. Overall, participants described deep emotional bonds with their partners, a mutual willingness to work on their relationship, and good communication skills as relationship strengths. Mental health symptoms and internalized stigma were identified as major contributors to relationship struggles. Participants spontaneously identified intentional strategies that they used to navigate mental health challenges in their relationship that included self-directed, partner-directed, and couple-directed actions. Implications of findings for research and practice are discussed.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The job interview can be challenging for autistic adolescents considering the required social communication skills. Further, having decreased awareness of personal strengths may make it difficult to advocate for oneself to a future employer. The purpose of the current pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) is to examine the preliminary efficacy and feasibility of a combined interventional approach using: the Virtual Interview Tool for Autistic Transition-Age Youth (VIT-TAY) and Kessler Foundation Strength Identification and Expression (KF-STRIDE). METHOD: Twenty autistic transition-age youth (TAY) were randomly assigned to two groups: an intervention group (n = 10) that received 9 h of VIT-TAY (interviewing practice with a virtual human), and three lessons of KF-STRIDE (positive psychology intervention to learn and discuss one's personal character strengths) and a services-as-usual (SAU) group (n = 10). The primary outcome was measured using a video-recorded mock job interview performed at pre- and post-test, which was rated by blinded assessors. Secondary outcomes included self-reports of job interview skill, interview anxiety, work readiness and recent job search behavior. RESULTS: Paired samples t-tests revealed significant differences between pre- and post-test in the intervention group (but not the control group) on the mock interview total score (p = 0.02, d = 0.76) and self-reported job interview skills total score (p = 0.02, d = 0.75). The intervention group (but not the control group) had improvements in work-readiness (p = 0.06, d = 0.53) and job search behavior (p = 0.07, d = 0.52) that were characterized by medium effect sizes. CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study suggests that combining VIT-TAY with KF-STRIDE leads to improvements in performance-based and self-reported job interview skills.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the relationship between parental reports of children's behavioral problems and their cheating behaviors on simulated academic tests, addressing a significant gap in understanding early childhood academic cheating and its potential links to broader behavioral issues. We hypothesized that children's early problem behaviors would be predictive of their academic cheating. To test these hypotheses, children aged 4 to 12 years took part in six unmonitored academic tests that measured their cheating behaviors while their parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire elsewhere. Separate hierarchical linear regressions revealed that children's problem behaviors, as reported by parents, overall significantly predict children's cheating behaviors even after accounting for demographic variables such as age, gender, ethnicity, and parental religiosity. Specifically, the Conduct Problems subscale of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire showed a significant and unique association with children's cheating behaviors above and beyond the common contributions of all predictors. However, the Child Behavior Checklist scores and the scores on the other Strengths and Difficulties subscales were not significantly or uniquely related to cheating. These findings offer new insight into simulated childhood academic cheating and its relation to problem behaviors observed by parents.
