ABSTRACT

Stormwater pollution is a key factor contributing to water quality degradation, posing substantial environmental and human health risks. Although stormwater retention ponds, also referred to as wet ponds, are commonly implemented to alleviate stormwater challenges by reducing peak flow and removing suspended solids, their effectiveness in removing heavy metals and nutrients is limited. This study evaluated the performance of floating treatment platforms (FTPs) featuring vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides), a non-invasive, nutrient- and metal-accumulating perennial grass, in removing heavy metals (Cu, Pb, and Zn) and nutrients (P and N) in stormwater retention ponds. Furthermore, the potential for utilizing the spent vetiver biomass for generating biochar and bioethanol was investigated. The study was conducted in a greenhouse setup under simulated wet and dry weather conditions using pond water collected from a retention pond in Stafford Township, New Jersey, USA. Two FTPs with vetiver (vegetated FTPs) were compared with two FTPs without vetiver (non-vegetated FTPs), which served as controls. Results showed that the removal of heavy metals and nutrients by the FTPs with vetiver was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the FTPs without vetiver. Notably, vetiver showed resilience to stormwater pollutants and hydroponic conditions, displaying no visible stress symptoms. The biochar and bioethanol generated from the spent vetiver exhibited desirable yield and quality, without raising concerns regarding pollutant leaching, indicated by very low TCLP and SPLP concentrations. This study provides compelling evidence that the implementation of vetiver-based FTPs offers a cost-effective and environment-friendly solution for mitigating stormwater pollution in retention ponds. Furthermore, the utilization of vetiver biomass for biofuel and biochar production supports clean production and fostering circular economy efforts.

ABSTRACT

Metal ions have attracted a lot of interest in antitumor therapy due to their unique mechanism of action. However, multiple death mechanisms associate with metal ions to synergistic antitumors have few studies mainly due to the serious challenges in designing and building metal-associated multimodal treatment platforms. Hence, a series of glutathione-activatable CaCu-based metal-organic-frameworks loaded with doxorubicin and ovalbumin are successfully designed and synthesized with an "all in one" strategy, which is modified by galactosamine-linked hyaluronic acid to prepare multimodal treatment platform (SCC/DOX@OVA-HG) for targeted delivery and synergistic antitumor therapy. SCC/DOX@OVA-HG can be rapidly degraded by the overexpressed glutathione and then releases the "cargoes" in the tumor microenvironment. The released Cu+ efficiently catalyzes H2O2 to produce highly toxic ROS for CDT, and the up-regulation of calcium ion concentration in tumor cells induced by the released Ca2+ enables calcium overload therapy, which synergically enhances the metal-related death pattern. Meanwhile, OVA combined with Ca2+/Cu2+ further activates macrophages into an M1-like phenotype to accelerate tumor cell death through immunotherapy. Besides, the released DOX can also insert into the DNA double helix for chemotherapy. Consequently, the developed SCC/DOX@OVA-HG reveals significantly improved antitumor efficacy through a multimodal synergistic therapy of chemotherapy, chemodynamic therapy, calcium overload, and immunotherapy.

ABSTRACT

Most types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, are not curable. However, there are risk factors, such as obesity or hypertension, that can promote the development of dementia. Holistic treatment of these risk factors can prevent the onset of dementia or delay it in its early stages. To support individualized treatment of risk factors in dementia, this paper presents a model-driven digital platform. It enables monitoring of biomarkers using smart devices from the internet of medical things (IoMT) for the target group. The collected data from such devices can be used to optimize and adjust treatment in a patient in the loop manner. To this end, providers such as Google Fit and Withings have been connected to the platform as example data sources. To achieve treatment and monitoring data interoperability with existing medical systems, internationally accepted standards such as FHIR are used. The configuration and control of the personalized treatment processes are achieved using a self-developed domain-specific language. For this language, an associated diagram editor was implemented, which allows the management of the treatment processes through graphical models. This graphical representation should help treatment providers to understand and manage these processes more easily. To investigate this hypothesis, a usability study was conducted with twelve participants. We were able to show that such graphical representations provide advantages in clarity in reviewing the system, but lack in easy set-up (compared to wizard-style systems).

ABSTRACT

Objective To establish a pre-hospital and in-hospital first aid rapid linkage treatment platform in order to provide quick rescue time for emergency patients. Methods The interconnection first aid APP was made. The emergency center and traffic command center were combined to participate in first aid. The traffic command center controls the traffic lights in real time to provide the optimal transportation path for the emergency patients. The first aid center carries out preliminary treatment, and shares the patient information to the hospital in real time to make the most suitable doctors waiting for the consultation. The therapeutic effects of patients with acute critical disease before and after the platform applied was compared. Results It has realized the tripartite information linkage between the hospital, the emergency center and the traffic command center. In the experimental group, the pre-hospital emergency response time, the hospital rescue time and the emergency success rate were(16.28±3.08)min, (17.89±5.84)min,87.85%(217/247),the control groups'pre-hospital emergency response time, the rescue time in hospital and the success rate of acute critical patients were(18.29±1.87)min,(24.84±1.69)min, 63.01% (138/219), the data of two groups were statistically significant (t=3.783, 5.745, χ2=5.404, P<0.05). Conclusions The establishment of pre-hospital and in-hospital first aid rapid linkage treatment platform of emergency patients can optimize the patient first aid survival chain, provide greater rescue opportunities for emergency patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the impacts of water supply on water quality in the pipeline of the dental comprehensive treatment platform to contribute to pollution control. Methods Totally 8 platforms from the stomatological department underwent 2-a detection and tracing. The water sources included tap water, distilled water and filtered water, and the discharge water went through sampling and bacteriological analysis before and after disinfection. Results The mean numbers of colonies by tap water, distilled water and filtered water were (472±385),(380±372) and (446±382) cfu/ml respectively, and the qualification rates by tap water, distilled water and filtered water were 33.3%,45.8% and 37.5% respectively. All the colonies numbers were limited within 0 and 60 cfu/ml with the qualification rate being 100% after disinfection. Conclusion Water source cannot relieve bacterial infection effectively, and disinfection eliminates bacteria and improves water quality in the pipeline of the dental comprehensive treatment platform.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we developed a sensitive and selective analytical method of determining salinomycin in flesh and meat using a lab-built laser induced fluorescence microscope (LIFM) with nanoparticles. Two types of nanoparticles, Cy5 doped core-shell silica nanoparticles as a probe and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to extract the target antibiotic from the treated sample, were synthesized and modified for chemical and enzymatic binding. After optimization, the newly developed method was applied to ham, chicken, and meat samples for the quantitative determination of salinomycin. The limits of detection (LODs) obtained from the calibration curve were 48-590 pg/mL, which was about 100-fold lower than that of the ELISA method.
