ABSTRACT
Currently, the use of acoustic echo cancellers (AECs) plays a crucial role in IoT applications, such as voice control appliances, hands-free telephony and intelligent voice control devices, among others. Therefore, these IoT devices are mostly controlled by voice commands. However, the performance of these devices is significantly affected by echo noise in real acoustic environments. Despite good results being achieved in terms of echo noise reductions using conventional adaptive filtering based on gradient optimization algorithms, recently, the use of bio-inspired algorithms has attracted significant attention in the science community, since these algorithms exhibit a faster convergence rate when compared with gradient optimization algorithms. To date, several authors have tried to develop high-performance AEC systems to offer high-quality and realistic sound. In this work, we present a new AEC system based on the grey wolf optimization (GWO) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms to guarantee a higher convergence speed compared with previously reported solutions. This improvement potentially allows for high tracking capabilities. This aspect has special relevance in real acoustic environments since it indicates the rate at which noise is reduced.

Microgrids (MGs) based on renewable energies have emerged as a proficient strategy for tackling power quality issues in conventional distribution networks. Nonetheless, MG systems require a suitable control scheme to supply energy optimally towards the electrical grid. This paper presents an innovative framework for designing hybrid Proportional-Resonant (PR) controllers with Linear Quadratic Regulators (LQR), PR+LQR, which merge relevant properties of PR and LQR controllers. This method simultaneously determines the MG control parameters and the current unbalanced factor generated at the distribution network. We select the traditional IEEE 13-bus test feeder network and place two MGs at strategic locations to validate our approach. Moreover, we use the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) to find control parameters through a reliable fitness function that leads to high-performance microgrids. Finally, we conceive several tests to assess the efficacy of GWO for tuning the hybrid controller and compare the resulting data across distinct realistic operation conditions representing power quality events. So, we choose four case studies considering different renewable energy penetration indexes and power factors and evaluate the effects of the MGs over the distribution grid. We also compare the proposed hybrid PR+LQR controller against closely-related alternatives from the literature and validate its robustness and stability through the disk margin approach and the Nyquist criterion. Our numerical simulations prove that hybrid controllers driven by GWO are highly reliable strategies, yielding an average unbalanced current reduction of 30.03%.

Epilepsy is one of the most common chronical neurological conditions affecting over 50 million people worldwide. In addition to the stigma and discrimination, individuals with epilepsy suffer from a nearly three-fold increased risk of premature death compared to the general population. Although these premature deaths occur due to multiple causes, sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) still challenges neurologists and clinicians dealing with individuals with epilepsy. Recently, an increased interest in cardiac outcomes related to acute seizures and chronic epilepsy resulted in the groundbreaking development of the "epileptic heart" concept, and sudden cardiac death in individuals with epilepsy, which is 4.5 times as frequent as SUDEP according to some observational data, has gained more attention. As we gather information and learn about possible comorbidities and consequences of seizures and/or chronic epilepsy, we present a clinical case of a young patient with an unusual association of epilepsy, the Gorlin Goltz syndrome, and a cardiac fibroma with Wolf-Parkinson-White (WPW), who had multiple aborted cardiac arrests. Diagnostic challenges and multiple possible causes of sudden cardiac death in this single patient report are discussed.

La tormenta tiroidea es un estado crítico y poco frecuente que condiciona la disfunción de múltiples órganos por el efecto del exceso de las hormonas tiroideas, esta disfunción endócrina tiene una elevada mortalidad y genera manifestaciones típicas como la taquicardia, fiebre, alteraciones gastrointestinales, cardiovasculares y del sistema nervioso central. El embarazo se ha asociado con un incremento en la incidencia de arritmias. Necesitan un tratamiento inmediato con drogas antiarrítmicas, cardioversión eléctrica o cesárea de urgencia. El WPW es una anormalidad cardiaca congénita que consiste en la presencia de un haz anómalo (Haz de Kent) que evita el sistema normal de conducción uniendo directamente aurículas y ventrículos. Veremos el caso de una gestante de 32 semanas que presenta un cuadro de tormenta tiroidea y múltiples episodios de taquicardia paroxística supraventricular (TPS), de tórpida y sombría evolución clínica mediada por un haz anómalo de Kent intermitente. Es evidente que la tormenta tiroidea en el contexto de la gestación produjo cambios en las propiedades electrofisiológicas del haz anómalo de Kent intermitente lo cual propició el desarrollo de múltiples taquicardias paroxísticas supraventriculares refractarias a la cardioversión eléctrica y farmacológica. Tampoco mejoró con la tiroidectomía total, solamente cedió por completo con la ablación por catéter de radiofrecuencia del haz anómalo de Kent.
Thyroid storm is a critical and infrequent state that conditions the dysfunction of multiple organs due to the effect of excess thyroid hormones. This endocrine dysfunction has a high mortality and generates typical manifestations such as tachycardia, fever, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and heart disorders, and the central nervous system. Pregnancy has been associated with an increased incidence of arrhythmias. They need immediate treatment with antiarrhythmic drugs, electrical cardioversion, or emergency caesarean section. WPW is a congenital cardiac abnormality that consists of the presence of an abnormal bundle (Kent bundle) that prevents the normal conduction system, directly joining the atria and ventricles. We will see the case of a 32-week pregnant woman who presented symptoms of thyroid storm and multiple episodes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PST), with a torpid clinical course mediated by an abnormal intermittent Kent bundle. It is evident that the thyroid storm in the context of pregnancy produced changes in the electrophysiological properties of the intermittent Kent bundle, which led to the development of multiple PST refractory to electrical and pharmacological cardioversion. Moreover, it also did not improve with total thyroidectomy, only resolved completely with radiofrequency catheter ablation of the Kent bundle.

We evaluated the presence of antibodies against CaHV-1, CDV, and CPV-2 in serum samples from Brazilian wild carnivore species. Nine maned wolves and six crab-eating foxes were tested for CaHV-1 and CDV by virus neutralization test and CPV-2 by hemagglutination inhibition assay. Antibodies to CaHV-1, CDV, and CPV-2 were detected in serum samples of 1 (6.7%), 5 (33.3%), and 10 (66.7%) wild carnivores, respectively. Two maned wolves and one crab-eating fox were seropositive simultaneously for CDV and CPV-2. Antibodies against all viruses were detected in one crab-eating fox. This is the first report of CaHV-1 antibody detection in crab-eating foxes.

In this work, an approach is proposed to solve binary combinatorial problems using continuous metaheuristics. It focuses on the importance of binarization in the optimization process, as it can have a significant impact on the performance of the algorithm. Different binarization schemes are presented and a set of actions, which combine different transfer functions and binarization rules, under a selector based on reinforcement learning is proposed. The experimental results show that the binarization rules have a greater impact than transfer functions on the performance of the algorithms and that some sets of actions are statistically better than others. In particular, it was found that sets that incorporate the elite or elite roulette binarization rule are the best. Furthermore, exploration and exploitation were analyzed through percentage graphs and a statistical test was performed to determine the best set of actions. Overall, this work provides a practical approach for the selection of binarization schemes in binary combinatorial problems and offers guidance for future research in this field.

The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is the largest South American canid. In Brazil, as in other countries, it is considered an endangered species. Habitat loss, landscape changes, hunting, and roadkill are the main threats to this species. In addition, invasive diseases of domestic animals are considered to be an emerging threat to the maned wolf, where parasitic diseases are relevant. Sarcoptic mange is a skin disease caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. This disease is currently almost globally distributed, with a remarkable host diversity. In Brazil, reports of sarcoptic mange in wildlife include several species, both wild and captive. However, the impact of this disease on wildlife is unknown. At the time of writing, there is only one published report of sarcoptic mange in maned wolves. This study sheds light on the occurrence of sarcoptic mange in free-ranging maned wolves in their natural range. A total of 52 cases (suspected and confirmed) of sarcoptic mange were identified through social media review, camera trapping, chemical immobilization and sample collection. These cases were distributed in southeastern Brazil, in the states of São Paulo (n = 34), Minas Gerais (n = 17), and Rio de Janeiro (n = 1), demonstrating a rapid and widespread spread of this disease, although it still only occurs in part of the species' range. We expect that these results will help to subsidize future actions relevant to the control of this emerging disease.

Abstract Zoochory is a fundamental process that can be the main mechanism for seed and plant dispersal for many species. Mammals of the Carnivora order are among the most important dispersing agents; however, little is known regarding the role of canids as seed dispersers. Although the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) has a potentially important role in seed dispersal, given its relatively high consumption of fruits, few studies have investigated the germination rate of ingested seeds. Here, we used seeds removed from the feces of two captive specimens (maned wolf treatment) and those directly collected from unconsumed fruits (control) in germination essays to evaluate the germination rate and emergence velocity index (IVE). We used mature fruits from five species of trees in the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest in a 5 (species) × 2 (method of seed collection) factorial arrangement. The passage of seeds through the digestive tract of the maned wolf favored the germination of Genipa americana and Psidium guajava, delayed germination of Psidium cattleianum, and maintained the germination of Plinia cauliflora and Ficus obtusifolia. Our results revealed that germination occurred for all tested plant species consumed by the maned wolf; therefore, this canid species has high dispersal potential and can be an important ally in the restoration of the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest-Cerrado contact zone ecosystems.
Resumo A zoocoria é um processo fundamental para muitas espécies vegetais, podendo ser o principal mecanismo de dispersão de sementes e plantas. Os mamíferos da ordem Carnivora estão entre os agentes dispersores mais importantes, contudo, pouca atenção tem sido dada ao papel dos canídeos como dispersores de sementes. Embora o lobo-guará (Chrysocyon brachyurus) tenha um papel potencialmente importante na dispersão de sementes dado o seu consumo relativamente elevado de frutos, poucos estudos investigaram a taxa de germinação de sementes ingeridas. Aqui utilizamos sementes retiradas de fezes de dois exemplares em cativeiro (tratamento do lobo-guará) e diretamente retiradas de frutos não consumidos (controle) em ensaios de germinação para avaliar a taxa de germinação e o índice de velocidade de emergência (IVE). Utilizamos frutos maduros de cinco espécies de árvores que ocorrem no Cerrado e Mata Atlântica formando um arranjo fatorial de 5 (espécie) × 2 (forma de coleta de sementes). A passagem das sementes pelo trato digestivo do lobo-guará favoreceu a germinação de duas espécies, Genipa americana e Psidium guajava, atrasou a germinação de uma espécie, Psidium cattleianum e não afetou a germinação de duas espécies, Plinia cauliflora e Ficus obtusifolia. Com base nos nossos resultados, particularmente a descoberta de que todas as espécies vegetais testadas consumidas pelo lobo-guará germinaram, concluímos que esta espécie de canídeo tem um elevado potencial de dispersão, sendo um importante aliado na restauração de ecossistemas do Cerrado e da zona de contato entre Cerrado e Mata Atlântica.

Resumo Fundamento A síndrome de Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) é uma condição pró-arrítmica que pode exigir restrição de atividades extenuantes e é caracterizada por sinais de ECG, incluindo ondas delta. Observamos casos de padrões intermitentes de WPW apresentando-se como QRS alternante ('WPW alternante') em uma grande coorte de triagem de ECG pré-participação de homens jovens que se candidataram ao recrutamento militar. Objetivos Nosso objetivo foi determinar o padrão de WPW alternante, as características do caso e a prevalência de outros diagnósticos diferenciais relevantes apresentando-se como alternância de QRS em um ambiente de pré-participação. Métodos Cento e vinte e cinco mil cento e cinquenta e oito recrutas militares do sexo masculino prospectivos foram revisados de janeiro de 2016 a dezembro de 2019. Uma revisão de prontuários médicos eletrônicos identificou casos de WPW alternante e padrões ou síndrome de WPW. A revisão de prontuários médicos eletrônicos identificou casos de diagnósticos diferenciais relevantes que podem causar alternância de QRS. Resultados Quatro indivíduos (2,2%) apresentaram WPW alternante em 184 indivíduos com diagnóstico final de padrão ou síndrome de WPW. Dois desses indivíduos manifestaram sintomas ou achados eletrocardiográficos compatíveis com taquicardia supraventricular. A prevalência geral de WPW alternante foi de 0,003%, e a prevalência de WPW foi de 0,147%. As WPW alternantes representaram 8,7% dos indivíduos com QRS alternantes, e QRS alternantes tiveram prevalência de 0,037% em toda a população. Conclusões A WPW alternante é uma variante da WPW intermitente, que compreendeu 2,2% dos casos de WPW em nossa coorte de triagem pré-participação. Não indica necessariamente um baixo risco de taquicardia supraventricular. Deve ser reconhecido na triagem de ECG e distinguido de outras patologias que também apresentam QRS alternantes.
Abstract Background Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is a proarrhythmic condition that may require restriction from strenuous activities and is characterized by ECG signs, including delta waves. We observed cases of intermittent WPW patterns presenting as QRS alternans ('WPW alternans') in a large pre-participation ECG screening cohort of young men reporting for military conscription. Objectives We aimed to determine the WPW alternans pattern, case characteristics, and the prevalence of other relevant differential diagnoses presenting as QRS alternans in a pre-participation setting. Methods One hundred twenty-five thousand one hundred fifty-eight prospective male military recruits were reviewed from January 2016 to December 2019. A review of electronic medical records identified cases of WPW alternans and WPW patterns or syndrome. Reviewing electronic medical records identified cases of relevant differential diagnoses that might cause QRS alternans. Results Four individuals (2.2%) had WPW alternans out of 184 individuals with a final diagnosis of WPW pattern or syndrome. Two of these individuals manifested symptoms or ECG findings consistent with supraventricular tachycardia. The overall prevalence of WPW alternans was 0.003%, and the prevalence of WPW was 0.147%. WPW alternans represented 8.7% of individuals presenting with QRS alternans, and QRS alternans had a prevalence of 0.037% in the entire population. Conclusions WPW alternans is a variant of intermittent WPW, which comprised 2.2% of WPW cases in our pre-participation screening cohort. It does not necessarily indicate a low risk for supraventricular tachycardia. It must be recognized at ECG screening and distinguished from other pathologies that also present with QRS alternans.

Seizures are one of the clinical hallmarks of Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS), causing a significant impact on the life quality, still in the first years of life. Even that the knowledge about WHS-related seizure candidate genes has grown, cumulative evidence suggests synergic haploinsufficiency of distinct genes within cellular networks that should be better elucidated. Herein, we evaluated common mechanisms between candidate genes from WHS seizure-susceptibility regions (SSR) and genes globally associated with epilepsy. For this purpose, data from 94 WHS patients delineated by chromosomal microarray analysis were integrated into a tissue-specific gene network with gene expression, drugs, and biological processes. We found functional modules and signaling pathways involving candidate and new genes with potential involvement in the WHS-related seizure phenotype. The proximity among the previous reported haploinsufficient candidate genes (PIGG, CPLX1, CTBP1, LETM1) and disease genes associated with epilepsy suggests not just one, but different impaired mechanisms in cellular networks responsible for the balance of neuronal activity in WHS patients, from which neuron communication is the most impaired in WHS-related seizures. Furthermore, CTBP1 obtained the largest number of drug associations, reinforcing its importance for adaptations of brain circuits and its putative use as a pharmacological target for treating seizures/epilepsy in patients with WHS.

Optical fiber sensors based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are prone to measurement errors if the cross-sensitivity between temperature and strain is not properly considered. This paper describes a self-compensated technique for canceling the undesired influence of temperature in strain measurement. An edge-filter-based interrogator is proposed and the central peaks of two FBGs (sensor and reference) are matched with the positive and negative slopes of a Fabry-Perot interferometer that acts as an optical filter. A tuning process performed by the grey wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithm is required to determine the optimal spectral characteristics of each FBG. The interrogation range is not compromised by the proposed technique, being determined by the spectral characteristics of the optical filter in accordance with the traditional edge-filtering interrogation. Simulations show that, by employing FBGs with optimal characteristics, temperature variations of 30 °C led to an average relative error of 3.4% for strain measurements up to 700µÏµ. The proposed technique was experimentally tested under non-ideal conditions: two FBGs with spectral characteristics different from the optimized results were used. The temperature sensibility decreased by 50.8% as compared to a temperature uncompensated interrogation system based on an edge filter. The non-ideal experimental conditions were simulated and the maximum error between theoretical and experimental data was 5.79%, proving that the results from simulation and experimentation are compatible.

This study aimed to describe successful cryopreservation of sperm from maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus). Three ejaculates from 2 maned wolves were collected by digital manipulation of the penis and evaluated subjectively, centrifuged and frozen in BotuCrio® (Botupharma, Botucatu, Brazil) or Tris-yolk egg extender. Spermatozoa were thawed at 37ºC/30s or 70ºC/4s and evaluated for kinetics, morphology, plasma and acrosome membrane integrity, mitochondrial potential, hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion and lipid peroxidation. From 5 thawed samples, two had sperm total motility >55% (56.0% and 64.0%) and progressive motility ~35% (35% and 40%), both frozen with Tris-yolk egg. Plasma and acrosome membrane integrity decreased and percentage of sperm defects increased post-thawing. We concluded that is possible to freeze spermatozoa from maned wolves using semen collection and processing methods applied for domestic dogs.

The image stitching process is based on the alignment and composition of multiple images that represent parts of a 3D scene. The automatic construction of panoramas from multiple digital images is a technique of great importance, finding applications in different areas such as remote sensing and inspection and maintenance in many work environments. In traditional automatic image stitching, image alignment is generally performed by the Levenberg-Marquardt numerical-based method. Although these traditional approaches only present minor flaws in the final reconstruction, the final result is not appropriate for industrial grade applications. To improve the final stitching quality, this work uses a RGBD robot capable of precise image positing. To optimize the final adjustment, this paper proposes the use of bio-inspired algorithms such as Bat Algorithm, Grey Wolf Optimizer, Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm, Salp Swarm Algorithm and Particle Swarm Optimization in order verify the efficiency and competitiveness of metaheuristics against the classical Levenberg-Marquardt method. The obtained results showed that metaheuristcs have found better solutions than the traditional approach.

The Mexican wolf (Canis lupus baileyi) was once distributed in southern United States and northern Mexico. It is an endangered subspecies detached from the gray wolf, and likely exemplifies one of the original migration waves of C. lupus into the new world. This is a canine whose individuals survive in specialized facilities, zoos, and museums as part of captive-breeding programs. In order to contribute to the improvement of the management of this species and favor its long-term conservation in Mexico, we aimed to evaluate the diversity and abundance of the fecal bacterial microbiota in two populations exposed to different types of diet: (1) Michilia (23° N, 104° W); kibble daily and raw meat sporadically, and (2) Ocotal (19° N, 99° W); raw meat daily and live animals periodically. Next generation sequencing (V3-V4 16S rRNA gene) by Illumina was implemented. The operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in Michilia resulted in 9 phyla, 19 classes, 34 orders, 61 families, 204 genera, and 316 species, while in Ocotal there were 12 phyla, 24 classes, 37 orders, 69 families, 232 genera, and 379 species. Higher estimated Chao1 richness, Shannon diversity, and core microbiota were observed in Ocotal. Differences (p < 0.05) between populations occurred according to the Bray-Curtis beta diversity index. In the Michilia, dominance of bacteria that degrade carbohydrates (Firmicutes, Lachnospiraceae, Blautia, Clostrodium, Eisenbergiella, Romboutsia, and Ruminococcus) was observed; they are abundant in kibble diets. In contrast, the Ocotal microbiota was dominated by protein-degrading bacteria (Fusobacteria, Fusobacteriaceae, and Fusobacteria), indicating a possible positive relation with a raw meat diet. The information generated in this study is fundamental to support the implementation of better management plans in the two populations considered here, as well as in different facilities of southern United States and Mexico, where this subspecies is kept in captivity for conservation purposes.

The present research develops the parametric estimation of a second-order transfer function in its standard form, employing metaheuristic algorithms. For the estimation, the step response with a known amplitude is used. The main contribution of this research is a general method for obtaining a second-order transfer function for any order stable systems via metaheuristic algorithms. Additionally, the Final Value Theorem is used as a restriction to improve the velocity search. The tests show three advantages in using the method proposed in this work concerning similar research and the exact estimation method. The first advantage is that using the Final Value Theorem accelerates the convergence of the metaheuristic algorithms, reducing the error by up to 10 times in the first iterations. The second advantage is that, unlike the analytical method, it is unnecessary to estimate the type of damping that the system has. Finally, the proposed method is adapted to systems of different orders, managing to calculate second-order transfer functions equivalent to higher and lower orders. Response signals to the step of systems of an electrical, mechanical and electromechanical nature were used. In addition, tests were carried out with simulated signals and real signals to observe the behavior of the proposed method. In all cases, transfer functions were obtained to estimate the behavior of the system in a precise way before changes in the input. In all tests, it was shown that the use of the Final Value Theorem presents advantages compared to the use of algorithms without restrictions. Finally, it was revealed that the Gray Wolf Algorithm has a better performance for parametric estimation compared to the Jaya algorithm with an error up to 50% lower.

We characterized the immunohistochemical expression profiles of dysgerminomas from a 16-y-old maned wolf and 13 domestic dogs using the following biomarkers: Sal-like protein 4 (SALL4), octamer-binding transcription factor 3/4 (OCT3/4), placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP), c-kit, and vimentin. The maned wolf had nonspecific and long-standing clinical signs of lethargy, anorexia, and weight loss, and was euthanized because of poor prognosis. At autopsy, the left ovary was effaced by a 12 × 8 × 6 cm mass, comprised of anaplastic cells with a mitotic count of 20 mitoses in 10 high power fields. Dysgerminomas from 7 of 13 domestic dogs had nuclear expression of SALL4. Dysgerminomas from the maned wolf and 2 domestic dogs had both nuclear and cytoplasmic expression of SALL4. Cytoplasmic expression of PLAP and OCT3/4 was present in dysgerminomas from the maned wolf and 3 (PLAP) or 4 (OCT3/4) domestic dogs. All dysgerminomas expressed vimentin. Membranous c-kit expression was rare in the dysgerminoma from the maned wolf, and variable in dysgerminomas from 4 domestic dogs. A dysgerminoma from a domestic dog had cytoplasmic expression of c-kit. SALL4 is a useful marker to confirm germ cell origin of dysgerminoma in canids.

Fifteen maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) were anesthetized a total of 43 times as part of a long-term ecology and health study in a remote region of northeastern Bolivia. We administered tiletamine-zolazepam (TZ) to wolves in box traps or free-ranging, from blinds or on foot, at a mean dosage of 4.6 mg/kg intramuscularly. Detailed anesthetic information was recorded in 24 of these events in 11 wolves (six males, five females), and wolves were monitored closely post procedure with very high frequency or global positioning system telemetry collars. Anesthetic induction was smooth and rapid in all cases, with a mean 6.4 min from injection to recumbency. Vital parameters were stable during the majority of procedures. As expected with this drug combination, recovery was long (mean time to standing 163 min [range: 80-235 min]) but smooth, and animals were monitored in most cases in box traps until stable for release. One case of apnea and prolonged recovery is reported. In two cases, wolves recovered normally but were found to move minimally in the 2.5-4 d postprocedure before resuming normal movements. Overall, TZ provided safe, stable immobilization of free-ranging maned wolves in remote and extreme field conditions, although postanesthesia monitoring via telemetry is recommended.

During the 2019 Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) outbreak in Michigan, two 2-month old Mexican wolf pups experienced neurologic signs, lymphohistiocytic neutrophilic meningoencephalitis with neuronal necrosis and neuronophagia, and acute death. We identified EEEV by reverse transcription real-time PCR and in situ hybridization. Vector mosquitoes were trapped at the zoo.

Communication between dogs and humans is a topic of growing interest, and the "unsolvable task" is a common method used to measure human-directed communication. In this task, dogs learn how to solve a problem to obtain a reward. After a fixed number of trials, the reward becomes impossible to access, arguably leading to communicative attempts from the dog. Although useful to observe dogs' communicative behaviors in a fairly naturalistic situation, the methodology varies among studies regarding apparatus, number of trials, and other factors. The proxies used, for instance, gaze duration or frequency of gaze alternation, also vary, and there are discrepancies and a debate regarding what the task actually measures. Therefore, in this study, we reviewed the usage of the unsolvable task in canids of the genus Canis, searching Web of Science and Scopus for the terms "dog*", "Canis", "dingo*", "wolf" or "wolves" in the title and "unsolvable task" or "impossible task" in the topic. We included thirty-five studies in this review and discussed their different methodologies and proxies, such as different apparatuses, number of solvable trials, and different interpretations of "looking back", pointing out how they can affect results and hinder comparisons. Lastly, we used current data to propose strategies to homogenize the use of this important paradigm, with an ethogram of possible behaviors and their interpretation and a predefined set of methodological aspects for future research.

Parasitism is an important factor in conservation worldwide, especially for endangered species, as it can affect host populations by reducing growth rates, fecundity and affecting nutritional status. The maned wolf Chrysocyon brachyurus, a near-threatened species, is distributed across different habitats from the south Amazonian forest in Brazil to northern Argentina, Paraguay and eastern Bolivia. Most studies on gastrointestinal parasites in wild maned wolves are based on coprological findings, and there is little information about adult parasites and parasite species richness. Therefore, this study aims to expand the knowledge about the helminth infracommunity of a maned wolf, describe adult parasites, and explore parasitic coinfections. We performed a necropsy of an adult individual found road killed in Chaco province, Argentina. We collected adult worms from subcutaneous tissues, from the right ventricle, kidneys, and intestine. The parasites were morphologically identified as Dirofilaria immitis, Dioctophyma renale and Spirometra sp. respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first record for adults of Dirofilaria immitis in maned wolves. Filarioids were located within the heart as well as in subcutaneous tissues with mature females containing uterine microfilariae; this study also adds C. brachyurus as a new host for Spirometra sp. in Argentina. Considering that the three helminths found herein are zoonotic and that the maned wolf is an endangered canid, it is essential provide baseline information to determine the risk factors involved in the transmission and extend the studies to sympatric wild and domestic canids in the area.
