ABSTRACT
AIM: To study the crystalline characteristics of ceftezole sodium. METHODS: Ceftezole sodium crystals were obtained from different solvents. X-ray diffraction, DSC, TGA, etc were used to analyze the crytals. RESULTS: Ceftezole sodium crystal was easily obtained in isopropanol-water mixture. It consists of ceftizole sodium monohydrate, which consists of type I and type II two different crystal forms. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns showed differences between type I and the type II crystal forms. Peaks at 8 degrees and 18 degrees in diffractograms of the type I, but at 9 degrees and 18.6 degrees in the type II could be observed. Water molecules in different crystal forms had different combining condition. They lost during 35-117 degrees C in the type I form, but lost during 110-160 degrees C in the type II form. CONCLUSION: Structure of ceftizole sodium monohydrate crystal obtained in different circumstance could be some vary, which influence upon the thermal stability of the compound. The type I crystal form is more stable than the type II.

La cefazolina sódica es una cefalosporina de primera generación semisintética que es efectiva contra la mayoría de las bacterias gram positivas y gran negativas. En pacientes sometidos a intervenciones quirúrgicas de cadera se suele administrar durante el perioperatario. El presente estudio se efectuó en 36 sujetos con lesión de cadera que requirieron estabilización quirúrgica o reemplazo protésico, a los cuales se administró cefazolina sódica en dosis de 1 g por vía endovenosa una hora antes de la operación. En el postoperatorio se suministraron cuatro dosis de cefazolina sódica por vía endovenosa a razón de 1 g cada 12 horas, junto con cuatro dosis de amikacina (500 mg) dos veces al día. Al valorar a los pacientes se encontró un solo caso en el que la herida operatoria se infectó. Por consiguiente, la profilaxis perioperatoria con antibióticos, aunque continúa siendo motivo de controversia, permite disminuir la incidencia de infección en regiones anatómicas tan susceptibles como la cadera. Por esta razón, la cefazolina sódica, por sus características, es de primera elección en profilaxis para este tipo de intervenciones quirúrgicas
