ABSTRACT

Purpose: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is an ocular allergic disease characterized by a type 2 inflammation, tissue remodeling, and low quality of life for the affected patients. We investigated the involvement of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and unfolded protein response in VKC. Methods: Conjunctival imprints from VKC patients and normal subjects (CTs) were collected, and RNA was isolated, reverse transcribed, and analyzed with the Affymetrix microarray. Differentially expressed genes between VKC patients and CTs were evaluated. Genes related to ER stress, apoptosis, and autophagy were further considered. VKC and CT conjunctival biopsies were analyzed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) with specific antibodies against unfolded protein response (UPR), apoptosis, and inflammation. Conjunctival fibroblast and epithelial cell cultures were exposed to the conditioned medium of activated U937 monocytes and analyzed by quantitative PCR for the expression of UPR, apoptosis, autophagy, and inflammatory markers. Results: ER chaperones HSPA5 (GRP78/BiP) and HYOU1 (GRP170) were upregulated in VKC patients compared to CTs. Genes encoding for ER transmembrane proteins, PKR-like ER kinase (PERK), activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6), ER-associated degradation (ERAD), and autophagy were upregulated, but not those related to apoptosis. Increased positive reactivity of BiP and ATF6 and unchanged expression of apoptosis markers were confirmed by IHC. Cell cultures in stress conditions showed an overexpression of UPR, proinflammatory, apoptosis, and autophagy markers. Conclusions: A significant overexpression of genes encoding for ER stress, UPR, and pro-inflammatory pathway components was reported for VKC. Even though these pathways may lead to ER homeostasis, apoptosis, or inflammation, ER stress in VKC may predominantly contribute to promote inflammation.

ABSTRACT

Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is the most common form of allergic eye disease and an increasingly prevalent condition. Topical eye drop treatments are the usual approach for managing AC, although their impact on the ocular surface is not frequently investigated. The aim of this study was to perform a comparative physicochemical characterization, and in vitro biological evaluations in primary conjunctival and corneal epithelial cells of the new multidose preservative-free bilastine 0.6% and main commercially available eye drops. MTT assay was used to measure cell viability; oxidative stress was analyzed with a ROS-sensitive probe; and apoptosis was evaluated monitoring caspase 3/7 activation. Differences in pH value, osmolarity, viscosity and phosphate levels were identified. Among all formulations, bilastine exhibited pH, osmolarity and viscosity values closer to tear film (7.4, 300 mOsm/l and ~ 1.5-10 mPa·s, respectively), and was the only phosphates-free solution. Single-dose ketotifen did not induce ROS production, and single-dose azelastine and bilastine only induced a mild increase. Bilastine and single-dose ketotifen and azelastine showed high survival rates attributable to the absence of preservative in its formulation, not inducing caspase-3/7-mediated apoptosis after 24 h. Our findings support the use of the new bilastine 0.6% for treating patients with AC to preserve and maintain the integrity of the ocular surface.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The prevalence of ocular allergy varies according to the population and location of the study. Severe forms of ocular allergy are associated with compromised quality of life. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the application of the Brazilian-Portuguese version of the Quality of Life in Children with Keratoconjunctivitis questionnaire to children and adolescents with different subtypes of allergic conjunctivitis. METHOD: A total of 48 patients (aged 5-12 years) with allergic conjunctivitis were included in this study. They were enrolled and monitored at a specialized center. After the clinical appointment, the children responded to the questionnaire on two occasions at an interval of 30 days. Individual scores (ranging from 0 to 3) of the 16 items were added. RESULTS: The Brazilian-Portuguese version of the Quality of Life in Children with Keratoconjunctivitis questionnaire demonstrated good translation, adaptation, and intellectual properties, with substantial internal consistency (Cronbach's α coefficient = 0.702). There was no significant difference between the responses of the two interviews, revealing good reproducibility. The moderate/severe forms of allergic conjunctivitis had significantly higher quality of life scores (indicating a poorer quality of life) than the mild forms. CONCLUSIONS: The Brazilian-Portuguese version of the Quality of Life in Children with Keratoconjunctivitis proved to be quick, reliable, and reproducible for assessing the quality of life in children with allergic conjunctivitis. However, its ability to detect changes resulting from symptom aggravation or treatment needs to be further evaluated.

ABSTRACT

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic recurrent inflammatory skin disease with a bipolar age distribution in childhood, adolescence and middle adulthood. Up to 50% of AD patients show ocular involvement, which can be potentially sight threatening. Clinically, the majority of cases present with atopic blepharo(kerato)conjunctivitis or atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC); other clinical variants from this group of inflammatory ocular surface diseases are keratoconjunctivitis vernalis in childhood and adolescence and allergic conjunctivitis. In addition to the aforementioned blepharitis, keratitis and conjunctivitis, AD is also associated with eyelid involvement with subsequent eyelid malposition, limbal insufficiency with the development of pseudopterygia, (chronic) cicatrizing conjunctivitis with symblephara formation and fornix shortening, as well as ocular surface malignancies such as conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and squamous cell carcinoma. In addition, an association with AD or AKC has been described for keratoconus. Whereas the therapy of AD in dermatology has made revolutionary advances in recent years through the use of biologicals, the primary use of these biologicals in ophthalmological complications is still very hesitant. Treatment here is often provided using topical steroids and calcineurin inhibitors. The following article summarises recent developments in basic and clinical dermatological research and discusses them in the context of current concepts for ophthalmological therapy.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This meta-analysis aimed to review the safety and efficacy of topical cyclosporine A (CsA) and topical tacrolimus in allergic eye disease. METHODS: A systematic search identified thirteen studies and a total of 445 patients for inclusion, making this the largest meta-analysis published on the subject. The current review was performed in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). RESULTS: Thirteen randomized control trials were included in the meta-analysis. Eleven studies used CsA as the treatment, and two used Tacrolimus. In total, 445 participants were included, of whom 76.6% were male. The mean age of participants across the included studies was 14 years. All studies reported clinical signs as evaluated by an examining clinician. Signs were usually assessed by anatomical region, with the most common regions being the conjunctiva and the cornea, and the most common signs assessed were hyperemia and papillae. Three studies accounted for more than 50% of the meta-analysis's weight. Effect size (d) ranged from - 2.37 to - 0.03, negative values favoring immunomodulators. Fixed Effect Meta-Analysis returned an SMD of - 0.81 (95% CI [- 0.98, - 0.65]). However, there was significant heterogeneity (I2 = 61%, Qw = 30.76) in the outcome measure (P = 0.0021); therefore, a random-effect meta-analysis was also completed in which the pooled SMD was - 0.98 (95% CI [- 1.26, - 0.69], τ2 = 0.16). CONCLUSIONS: This study affirms the current scientific community's stance that immunomodulators effectively treat clinical signs, including blepharitis, conjunctival hyperemia, edema, papillae, and corneal damage in severe ocular allergic disease.

ABSTRACT

Globally, there has been a dramatic increase in the geriatric population. Sadly, this populace is highly prone to develop various ocular morbidities putting pressure on the strained eye care delivery system especially in low-income countries. Hence, the aim of this study was to determine the distribution of ocular morbidities among elderly. The study was a retrospective cross-sectional study conducted at Mzuzu Central Hospital in Malawi. We retrieved data from the hospital's Ophthalmology out-patient registry from January 2021 to December 2021. We recruited all 970 elderly patients who visited the clinic during the period of study. Data entry and analysis was done employing SPSS (v.26). More males than females had ocular morbidities. Cataract 400 (41.2%) was the most prevalent ocular morbidity followed by glaucoma 189 (19.5%), pinguecula 48 (4.9%) and allergic conjunctivitis 43 (4.4%). Anterior segment eye diseases were common 714 (73.6%). The prevalence of cataract, glaucoma, refractive error and allergic conjunctivitis was significantly associated with sex (p < 0.05). Age association was found with the prevalence of cataract, glaucoma, pinguecula, allergic conjunctivitis and corneal scar (p < 0.05). The pattern of eye diseases is endemic to the country. More resources should be targeting cataract and glaucoma among the age group.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported an increasing prevalence of childhood allergic rhinitis in developing countries. There is still a lack of the recent epidemiology of allergic rhinitis among Chinese preschool children. Therefore, this study explored the prevalence of rhinitis symptoms and identified their associations with potential risk factors among children at the age of 3-6 in Shanghai, China. METHODS: Validated International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire was adopted to collect information about rhinitis symptoms and potential risk factors. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to assess associations between risk factors and allergic rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis. RESULTS: A total of 6183 questionnaires were included in our study. The prevalence of rhinitis ever, current rhinitis, and physician-diagnosed rhinitis were 32.6%, 29.2%, and 14.3%, respectively, while the prevalence of current rhinoconjunctivitis was 11.3%. The higher prevalence was observed in boys than in girls in terms of rhinitis ever, current rhinitis, current rhinoconjunctivitis and doctor-diagnosed rhinitis. Autumn had the highest prevalence among four seasons. In our multivariate logistic regression analyses, history of allergic diseases and paracetamol use in the last year showed positive associations with the increased risk of both current rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis, and antibiotic use was an independent significant risk factor only for current rhinitis. Genetic factors, including maternal and paternal rhinitis, asthma, and eczema, were significantly associated with the prevalence of current rhinitis. Similar associations were seen between these factors and current rhinoconjunctivitis, except for paternal eczema. Among environmental factors, smoking exposure at home, heavy truck traffic in home's street, floor heating system were independent risk factors for both current rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis in the adjusted model, while cleaning the house less than once a week was only associated with current rhinitis. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of current rhinitis was 29.2% among children aged 3-6 in Shanghai, China. Sex differences and seasonal variations were observed in the prevalence of rhinitis symptoms. The identified risk factors would provide a basis for policy makers and medical experts to take intervention measures to prevent allergic rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis.

ABSTRACT

Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) is the only causal and disease-modifying treatment for immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated type I allergies. Regular exposure to the causative allergen results in an immunomodulatory effect by which the predominant T­helper (Th) 2 lymphocyte response is shifted to a Th1 lymphocyte response and more allergen-specific blocking immunoglobulins are produced. The approval of substances for AIT is regulated by the Therapy Allergens Ordinance (TAV). There are subcutaneous and/or sublingual AITs for the following indications: allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, allergic asthma and insect venom allergy. In this article the indications for allergic conjunctivitis are discussed in particular. Clinical symptoms and a relevant type 1 sensitization are the prerequisites for the indications for AIT. The assessment of the indications and carrying out an AIT should only be carried out by physicians who have been trained in allergology.

BACKGROUND: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) are complex and rare diseases. Thus, their diagnosis and treatment are often a challenge. OBJECTIVE: Discussion on the epidemiology, new pathogenetic concepts, interesting clinical findings, diagnostic possibilities and new treatment options and their side effects in severe ocular allergies. Analysis of the presentation of VKC in the internet. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Evaluation of recent review articles, original publications, and case reports on the topics of VKC and AKC over the past 5 years. RESULTS: Ocular allergies have significantly increased over the last decades. Recent concepts discussed in the pathogenesis of VKC and AKC are the role of the local and gut microbiome as well as the influence of neuroinflammation. Keratoconus is significantly more common in patients with VKC and AKC compared to the normal population. It is associated with faster progression and a more severe course of disease. A conjunctival provocation test is only rarely necessary in the diagnosis of allergic conjunctivitis. Treatment of atopic dermatitis with dupilumab, an interleukin 4 receptor alpha (IL-4Ra) antagonist, can cause ocular side effects. Unfortunately, information available on the internet for patients and parents on the topic of VKC is sometimes dangerously incorrect. CONCLUSION: From the abovementioned new pathogenetic concepts, preventive and personalized treatment options could be developed in the future. Keratoconus in AKC/VKC must be recognized and treated early. Official guidelines are now available for a standardized conjunctival provocation test in the diagnosis of allergic conjunctivitis. The unwanted ocular side effects of dupilumab are often difficult to discriminate from the actual underlying AKC and respond well to anti-inflammatory treatment. Patients with VKC must be informed about the incorrect information on the internet regarding their disease.

BACKGROUND: In severe and recurrent ocular allergies conventional ophthalmic drugs can reach their limits, especially in chronic forms. The first novel immunomodulators and biologicals are already in clinical use and could provide relief. OBJECTIVE: Based on the immunopathophysiological mechanisms of ocular allergies, possible targets for innovative treatment approaches are presented. An overview of promising new and future immunomodulators and biologicals and their modes of action is also given. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Current reviews on ocular allergies and the treatment of systemic allergic diseases were screened. Case reports on the treatment of ocular allergy using immunomodulators and biologicals were analyzed. The clinical relevance and possible applications are presented. RESULTS: In chronic forms of ocular allergies, complex ocular surface inflammatory responses mediated via immunoglobulin E (IgE), mast cells, CD4-positive type 2 T­helper cells and eosinophilic granulocytes are predominant. Cyclosporine A 0.1% eyedrops have been approved in Europe since 2018 for children aged 4 years and older with severe vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). In addition, case reports present promising data on the systemic off-label use of biologicals, such as dupilumab or omalizumab, in refractory VKC or atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC). CONCLUSION: A profound understanding of the immunopathophysiology of ocular allergies is necessary to detect further targets for future immunomodulators and biologicals. Currently, immunomodulatory therapy remains limited to cyclosporine A eyedrops. Other immunomodulatory agents, such as tacrolimus and biologicals can only be used off-label. Further studies on the controlled clinical use of these substances in the treatment of VKC or AKC are underway.

Allergic conjunctivitis (AC), an allergen-induced ocular inflammatory disease, primarily involves mast cells (MCs) and eosinophils. The role of neuroimmune mechanisms in AC, however, remains to be elucidated. We investigated the effects of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1)-positive sensory nerve ablation (using resiniferatoxin) and TRPV1 blockade (using Acetamide, N-[4-[[6-[4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4-pyrimidinyl]oxy]-2-benzothiazolyl] (AMG-517)) on ovalbumin-induced conjunctival allergic inflammation in mice. The results showed an exacerbation of allergic inflammation as evidenced by increased inflammatory gene expression, MC degranulation, tumor necrosis factor-α production by MCs, eosinophil infiltration and activation, and C-C motif chemokine 11 (CCL11) (eotaxin-1) expression in fibroblasts. Subsequent findings demonstrated that TRPV1+ sensory nerves secrete somatostatin (SST), which binds to SST receptor 5 (SSTR5) on MCs and conjunctival fibroblasts. SST effectively inhibited tumor necrosis factor-α production in MCs and CCL11 expression in fibroblasts, thereby reducing eosinophil infiltration and alleviating AC symptoms, including eyelid swelling, lacrimation, conjunctival chemosis, and redness. These findings suggest that targeting TRPV1+ sensory nerve-mediated SST-SSTR5 signaling could be a promising therapeutic strategy for AC, offering insights into neuroimmune mechanisms and potential targeted treatments.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The existing epidemiological evidence regarding the intricate relationship between allergic diseases and chronic adenotonsillar diseases (CATD) remains inconclusive. Herein, the objective of our study is to explore the causal association using Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS: Employing data from large genome-wide association studies, a comprehensive two-sample bidirectional MR study was conducted. The studied traits encompassed allergic rhinitis (cases n = 9707, controls n = 331173), allergic asthma (cases n = 8525, controls n = 193857), allergic conjunctivitis (cases n = 18321, controls n = 324178), atopic dermatitis (cases n = 11964, controls n = 306909), and CATD (cases n = 38983, controls n = 258553). All the patients were of European descent and participants in cohort studies. The primary analysis was executed using inverse-variance-weighted MR. Furthermore, six additional MR methods (MR-Egger, weighted median, simple mode, weighted mode, MR pleiotropy residual sum and outlier, MR robust adjusted profile score) were employed to ensure the reliability and detect potential horizontal pleiotropy within the results. The estimates obtained from the MR analysis were factored into the overall effect calculation. RESULTS: Genetically anticipated outcomes demonstrated a significant association between CATD risk and allergic rhinitis (OR = 1.141, p = 6.30E-06), allergic asthma (OR = 1.115, p = 8.31E-05), allergic conjunctivitis (OR = 1.197, p = 8.69E-07), and a suggestive association with atopic dermatitis (OR = 1.053, p = 0.040). However, no substantial correlation was observed in the reverse direction. CONCLUSIONS: Findings of our study provide evidence supporting a causal role of allergic diseases in the development of CATD, whereas the converse relationship does not appear to hold true. ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the concern about pollen broadcasting in Chinese population from multiple dimensions and to understand the information about allergic rhinitis (AR) in China by analyzing related factors. Methods: From March 1 to September 30, 2022, a large-scale multi-center cross-sectional survey was conducted based on the Questionnaire Star platform in 21 Chinese hospitals. A total of 7 056 subjects from 7 regions in China: Northeast, North, East, Central, South, Southwest, and Northwest China were included. Basic characteristics (including social demographic characteristics and disease characteristics of AR patients), concern about pollen broadcasting, the willingness of pollen-induced AR (PiAR) patients to receive pollen broadcasting, and the treatment satisfaction rate of AR patients were collected. The chi-square test, multivariate linear regression model, and Logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the concern about pollen broadcasting in the Chinese population and related factors from multiple dimensions. Results: Among 7 056 subjects, 23.02% were concerned about pollen broadcasting. Among 3 176 self-reported AR and 1 019 PiAR patients, 25.60% and 39.16% were concerned about pollen broadcasting, respectively, which was higher than that of non-AR or non-PiAR subjects (χ2 value was 21.74 and 175.11, respectively, both P<0.001). Among AR patients, the proportion of spring and autumn allergen-positive patients concerned about pollen broadcasting was higher than that in perennial allergen-positive patients (χ2 value was 20.90 and 19.51, respectively, both P<0.001). The proportion of AR patients with asthma, sinusitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases was higher than those without complications (χ2 value was 50.83, 21.97, 56.78, 7.62, respectively, all P<0.05). The proportion of AR patients in North China who could find pollen broadcasting locally was 31.01%, significantly higher than those in other regions (all P<0.05). Multivariate linear regression model analysis showed that among PiAR patients, those with higher per capita household income and higher AR disease cognition levels had been concerned about pollen broadcasting in the past, and those complicated with allergic conjunctivitis had stronger intention to receive pollen broadcasting (B value was 0.24, 0.13, 0.66, 0.47, respectively, all P<0.05). The higher the disease cognition level of PiAR patients, the stronger their willingness to actively participate in treatment (R2=0.72, P<0.001). Only 18.89% of AR patients felt satisfied with the treatment effect. Logistic regression analysis showed that in AR patients, the treatment satisfaction rate was significantly higher among those concerned about pollen broadcasting compared to those who were not (OR=1.83, P<0.001). Conclusions: Currently, the dissemination of pollen broadcasting in China is hindered by various factors such as disease cognition level. The treatment satisfaction among AR patients remains unsatisfactory.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of response intensity of allergen skin prick test (SPT) on symptom severity and long-term efficacy of dust mite subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) in allergic rhinitis (AR). METHODS: AR Patients diagnosed with dust mite allergy and completed 3 years of SCIT were collected and classified into three groups: grade 2 (SPT of + +), grade 3 (SPT of + + +) and grade 4 (SPT of + + + +). Comparisons between groups were performed to examine the associations of SPT categories and symptom severity and the long-term efficacy of SCIT in AR. RESULTS: 181 AR patients were included. There was no significant difference in the baseline TNSS, SMS, RQLQ and VAS, and particularly to symptom severity grading among three SPT grade groups (P > 0.05). The moderate-severe AR was more likely to be smoking and accompany with asthma and had higher prevalence of sensitization to cockroach, mixed grass and tree pollen than mild AR (P < 0.05). Prevalence of sensitization to cockroach, mixed grass, ragweed and animal dander was increased in AR patients with asthma and allergic conjunctivitis (P < 0.05). Furthermore, after 3 years of SCIT, no statistical differences in TNSS, SMS, RQLQ, VAS and long-term efficacy were observed among the three SPT grade groups (P > 0.05). Similarly, long-term outcomes of patients with different SPT grades did not differ among different clinical characteristics and different efficacy determination criteria (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The SPT response intensity cannot be used as an objective evaluation index for symptom severity and the long-term efficacy of SCIT in AR patients.

Objective: This study aims to assess the correlation between allergic conjunctivitis (AC) and allergic rhinitis (AR). Methods: A total of 462 patients diagnosed with either allergic conjunctivitis or allergic rhinitis and treated at our hospital from January 2018 to December 2020 were included. Patients were categorized into two groups, the AC group and the AR group, based on their initial department of consultation. The AC group comprised 232 patients diagnosed with allergic conjunctivitis in the ophthalmology department, while the AR group consisted of 230 patients diagnosed with allergic rhinitis in the ENT department. Allergen analysis was conducted on patients presenting with both AC and AR and conjunctival and nasal mucosal scrapings were performed to examine eosinophil presence. The study analyzed the association between allergic AC and AR. Results: In the AC group, 174 patients (75.00%) had concurrent AR, while in the AR group, 169 patients (73.48%) had concurrent AC. Inhalant allergen testing among patients with concurrent AC and AR revealed that the primary inhalant allergens were dust mites, house dust, and fungi, with specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) positivity of 91.23%. Testing for food allergens identified fish, shrimp, and crab as ingestive allergens, with a specific IgE positivity of 58.58%. Eosinophil presence was assessed through conjunctival and nasal mucosal scrapings in patients with concurrent AC and AR. Eosinophils were detected in 188 cases (54.81%) through conjunctival scraping and 197 cases (57.43%) through nasal mucosal scraping, with no significant differences observed (P > .05). Conclusions: AC and AR share a common pathophysiological process and allergen profile, with the conjunctiva and nasal mucosa serving as sites of allergic reactions. This study suggests the integration of AC prevention and treatment into AR prevention strategies.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To explore the efficacy and relevant mechanism of 0.05% cyclosporine A (CsA) eye drops (II) monotherapy in patients with allergic conjunctivitis-associated dry eye (ACDE). METHODS: Prospective, randomized, controlled study. Fifty-three patients with mild-to-moderate ACDE were randomly assigned to two groups. The CsA group received 0.05% CsA eye drops (II) monotherapy four times daily. The control group received 0.1% olopatadine twice daily combined with 0.1% preservative-free artificial tears four times daily. Clinical symptoms and signs, tear total IgE, and lymphotoxin-α (LT-α) concentrations were assessed at pre- and post-treatment days 7, 30, and 60. And we further measured six tear cytokines levels using a microsphere-based immunoassay. RESULTS: The CsA group showed significant improvement in symptoms (Ocular Surface Disease Index and itching scores) and signs (conjunctival hyperaemia, conjunctival oedema, conjunctival papillae, tear break-up time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein staining, and goblet cell density) at each follow-up period compared to pre-treatment (all P < 0.050). And its improvement in itching scores (P7th < 0.001, P30th = 0.039, and P60th = 0.031) and TBUT (P7th = 0.009, P30th = 0.003, and P60th = 0.005) was more significant than the control group at all follow-up periods. The tear total IgE, interleukin (IL)-5, IL-6, periostin, eotaxin-3, and MMP-9 levels significantly decreased in the CsA group at day 60 after treatment (all P < 0.050). And the changed values in tear total IgE were positively correlated with the change in itching scores. CONCLUSIONS: 0.05% CsA eye drops (II) monotherapy can rapidly improve the symptoms and signs, especially in ocular itching and TBUT, in patients with ACDE. And its efficacy is superior to 0.1% olopatadine combined with artificial tears. Moreover, CsA downregulates the expression levels of tear inflammatory cytokines, including tear total IgE, IL-5, IL-6, periostin, eotaxin-3, and MMP-9. Among that, the reduction in tear total IgE levels may reflect the improvement of ocular itching.
