ABSTRACT

Due to an increase in life expectancy and, consequently, an increase in the number of people with a possible cognitive deterioration, there is a need to look for new pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments to potentiate both cognitive and functional levels, minimize the risk of depression, and improve the quality of life of the people affected by it . One kind of non-pharmacological treatments is dance therapy. The aim of this study is to see the effect of dance therapy on both cognitive and functional levels, depression and quality of life on people diagnosed with dementia in moderate to moderate-advanced stages. A group of twenty-four subjects took part in the study, every one of them was evaluated with different scales, fourteen of which then underwent dance therapy for six weeks. The results show that there is a tendency to improve in terms of quality of life in the group which took part of the dance therapy program, and a significant change in cognitive and depression levels, although this results are not conclusive

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Dance therapy is a less conventional modality of physical activity in cardiovascular rehabilitation. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the effects of dance therapy in hypertensive patients. METHODS: Pubmed, Scopus, LILACS, IBECS, MEDLINE and SciELO via Virtual Health Library (Bireme) (from the earliest data available to February 2016) for controlled trials that investigated the effects of dance therapy on exercise capacity, systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure in hypertensive patients. Weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated, and heterogeneity was assessed using the I(2) test. RESULTS: Four studies met the eligibility criteria. Dance therapy resulted in a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (WMD -12.01mmHg; 95% CI: -16.08, -7.94mmHg; P<0.0001) when compared with control subjects. Significant reduction in diastolic blood pressure were also found (WMD -3.38mmHg; 95% CI: -4.81, -1.94mmHg; P<0.0001), compared with control group. Exercise capacity showed a significant improvement (WMD 1.31; 95% CI: 0.16, 2.47; P<0.03). A moderate to high heterogeneity was observed in our analysis: I(2)=92% to SBP, I(2)=55% to DBP, and I(2)=82% to exercise capacity. CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis showed a positive effect of dance therapy on exercise capacity and reduction of SBP and DBP in individuals with hypertension. However, the moderate to high heterogeneity found in our analysis limits a pragmatic recommendation of dance therapy in individuals with hypertension.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This essay aims at identifying, describing and analyzing possible changes both in the experience of the body and in interpersonal relations of women with breast cancer, which result from their participation in Dance Therapy group meetings. Method: This is a phenomenologically oriented qualitative research using Maria Fux´s dance therapy method for group experiences. Eight meetings are described here, and an analysis of descriptions based primarily on Merleau-Ponty and María Fux is provided. Results: The participants have been able to express pain and sorrow over the circumstances that breast cancer and its relational environments have brought to their lives. They have been able to go through moments of creation and surrender to the rhythmic body sensations and experiential environment with different emotions lived separately and jointly. They have revived memories and sensations of their childhood and adolescence, and finally, they have rediscovered their sensitive body through body resignifications marked by the absence of the breast, and by means of feelings of greater acceptance and integration of lived experiences in new gestalts. Conclusions: This project is still under way, but it is already possible to conclude that the life experiences provided in dance therapy have allowed these women to improve their integration and welfare. Likewise, they have felt positive changes in the perception of their corporality and in their way of being in the world and with other subjects, thus experiencing the body in a new and different way

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the level of improvement, as regards pain, impact on fibromyalgia and depression, achieved by patients with fibromyalgia by comparing aquatic biodanza and stretching exercises. Design: Randomised controlled trial with two intervention groups. Location: Five health centres (Almeria). Patients: A total of 82 fibromyalgia patients between 18 and 65 years old, diagnosed by American College of Rheumatology criteria, were included, with 12 patients declining to take part in the study. The 70 remaining patients were randomly assigned to two groups of 35 patients each: aquatic biodanza and stretching exercises. Those who did not attend in at least 14 sessions or changed their treatment during the studio were excluded. The final sample consisted of 19 patients in aquatic biodanza group and 20 in stretching group. The limitations of the study included, the open evaluation design and a sample size reduced by defaults. Main measures: The outcome measures were sociodemographic data, quality of life (Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire), pain (McGill-Melzack questionnaire; and Visual Analogue Scale), pressure algometry (Wagner FPI10 algometer) and depression (Beck Inventory). These were carried out before and after a 12-week therapy .Results: The mean age of the sample was 55.41 years. The mean period from diagnosis was 13.44 years. The sample consisted mainly of housewives. There were significant differences (P<0.05) between groups, in pain (P<0.01), fibromyalgia impact (P<0.01), and depression (P<0.04) after the treatment. Conclusions: The biodanza aquatic exercises improve pain and quality of life in fibromyalgia patients(AU)

ABSTRACT

In order to assess qualitatively the fatness-slenderness of ballet dancers in an holistic volumetric classification of their figures and define the morphological linearity, a value of body weight for stature is quantitatively related to the empirical classification of morphological linearity of dancers. The purpose of this research is to compare the relations of body weight for stature between dancer groups of ballet and modern & folkloric dance(MFD). Dancers of the best professional companies and medium level schools of ballet and MFD from Cuba were studied anthropometrically. The body weight and stature were measured. The Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated in order to determine the relation of body weight for stature. The Student t- test for independent sample was applied to measure the differences between the types of dancers. There were significant differences in BMI values between ballet professional dancers in both sexes, and MFD. The female student of ballet showed lower values of IMC than MFD students; while the comparison between male students registered statistical similarities. The BMI average of female ballet dancers was in a range classified as low body weight (< 18.5 kg/m²) by the Word Health Organization. The BMI values made it possible to distinguish the morphological linearity for both females and males of the professional level between ballet dancers and folkloric dancers and female dancers of the student level.
