ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Five combinations of materials commonly used for intermaxillary records in cases of bilateral free end saddle were evaluated: acrylic resin base + wax; acrylic resin base + wax + ZOE paste; acrylic resin base + wax + Duralay resin; condensation silicone; and acrylic resin plate + irreversible hydrocolloid. The materials were evaluated by measuring the vertical distance between pairs of reference points located on the bases of the upper and lower articulated casts. The measurements obtained by manual articulation of the casts were used as the standards to which the measurements obtained with the recording materials were compared. ANOVA revealed significant differences among the materials and the Tukey's test showed that condensation silicone differed significantly (p<0.05) from the acrylic resin + wax combination, while no significant differences (p>0.05) were observed among the remaining materials. The condensation silicone presented the greatest differences from the measurements obtained by manual articulation of the casts whereas the acrylic resin base + wax combination presented the least differences. Based on the findings of this study, the following scale of fidelity can be settled from best to worst: acrylic resin base + wax; acrylic resin plate + alginate; acrylic resin base + wax + ZOE; acrylic resin base + wax + Duralay; and condensation silicone.

ABSTRACT

The use of systematic terminology for implant prostheses can simplify communication within the scientific community. However, a review of the current literature demonstrates the lack of uniformity in this field. It is the purpose of this manuscript to suggest uniform terminology based on conventional prosthodontic terms that will simplify communication in the profession.

ABSTRACT

The study assessed the number of missing teeth, the state of the existing prosthodontic appliances and the need for their replacement. Dental status and anamnesis were taken on a group of 120 elderly home residents by trained examiners. Prosthodontic appliances were evaluated according to the Karlsson's index for the crowns and bridges, and according to the modified Nevalainen et al. index for the evaluation of the complete dentures, as well as the need for prosthetic treatment. The most persistent teeth in both jaws were lower canines, while the most commonly missing teeth were lower first molars. On average, the crowns were older and in poorer condition than the bridges. Lower complete dentures had better stability but were also less retentive in comparison with the upper complete dentures. More than 82% of the subjects were in need of either fixed, removable or combined prosthodontic treatment. The high prevalence of needs for prosthodontic treatment pointed to the requirement for frequent dental check ups within elderly home residents in order to better identify and meet their dental needs.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Based on data from patient records from a random sample of Dutch general practices, a study was made of the bridge distribution pattern in different patient groups. Patient variables such as age, sex and insurance type were analysed. More women had a bridge inserted than men. However, there appeared to be no difference in the average quantity of bridges in men or women. The abutment teeth most frequently used were the cuspids in the maxilla and the second premolars and second molars in the mandible. Fourteen percent of the bridges consisted of five or more units, 14% were free-end bridges, 13% did not meet Ante's law and 16% had one or more non-vital abutment teeth.
