ABSTRACT

Health status was examined in workers engaged into methylmethacrylate-based organic glass production. The study supported that incidence, time and severity of occupational intoxications with methylmethacrylate depend on the level of its action. High (3-5-10 and more times exceeding the MAC) concentrations of methylmethacrylate induced the clinical signs of intoxication after 5 years of service. Neural, circulatory, digestive disorders were diagnosed. The workers contacting methylmethacrylate more than 15 years showed higher oncologic mortality. The noted features of exposure to methylmethacrylate are necessary to be taken into account in screenings of workers engaged into the stated production.

ABSTRACT

70 patients with chronic gastritis induced by occupational intoxication by methylmetacrylate (MMA) were examined in the clinic, their stomach activity was studied 3-5 and more years following the removal from MMA exposure. Characteristics of the development of the stomach disease were specified by the duration of occupational exposure to MMA, the time following the cessation of work under the conditions of MMA exposure, and marked neurologic changes. Chronic gastritis was accompanied by an allied condition, gradual decrease of acidity under secure enzyme-producing capacity of gastric glands. Morphologic changes in the stomach caused severe disorders, such as atrophic and erosive gastritis, pretumor stomach diseases. Medical supervision of the groups at risk of antacid gastritis and oncologic diseases was recommended.
