ABSTRACT

The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate the influence of low level laser therapy (LLLT) in alleviating pain caused by micro-marsupialization and the healing of oral ranulas and selected mucoceles. Eleven patients underwent micro-marsupialization treatment associated with LLLT. The patients were irradiated with a 660-nm continuous wave from an indium-gallium-arsenide-phosphorous (InGaAsP) diode laser, at 100 mW, with a spot size on the tissue surface of 0.0283 cm(2) (irradiance = 3.53 W/cm(2)). Irradiation was carried out immediately following micro-marsupialization treatment, as well as at 24, 48, and 72 h post-micro-marsupialization. All treated oral ranulas and selected mucoceles presented clinical healing. No evidence of recurrence could be identified during a mean of 11.0-month follow-up period. The use of InGaAsP diode lasers, within the parameters tested, appears to present a good alternative treatment to reduce pain and heal oral ranulas and selected mucoceles associated with micro-marsupialization.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To improve capability of appendiceal mucocele diagnosis via analyzes its clinical, pathological basis and radiological results. METHODS: Summarize 18 cases with pathological diagnosed appendiceal mucocele in PUMC Hospital since January 1985 till september 2004, including 4 males and 14 females (1:3.5), age ranged from 31 to 78 yrs old (average 59.8 years old). Eleven cases underwent barium enema, in which 9 cases received abdominal CT scanning and 1 case received CT virtual colonography. RESULTS: (1) CLINICAL RESULTS: 8 cases (44.4%) had right lower abdominal pain, 12 cases (66.7%) had palpable abdominal mass. (2) Radiological results: barium enema showed extrinsic oppressed filling defect at the end of cecum without destruction of mucosa; CT scanning showed right lower abdominal cystic mass, 75% with cystic wall calcification, massive septal mucous ascites was seen in one case with pseudomyxoma peritonei; CT virtual colonography showed clearly the extra cavity and intracavity changes at cecum. (3) Pathological results: simple mucocele (4 cases, 22.2%), mucous cystadenoma (12 cases, 66.7%) and mucous cystadenocarcinoma (2 cases, 11.1%) CONCLUSION: There are four pathological types in appendiceal mucocele. Radiological characters of appendiceal mucocele have distinct specificities while its clinical ones not. Radiological procedures are vital for correct clinical diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the clinical effect of microwave on commonly seen benign tumors or malformations of the oral cavity, 146 patients were randomly selected. There were 78 patients with mucous cyst, 22 patients with papilloma, 24 patients with hemangioma or malformation, 6 patients with lymphatic malformation and 16 patients with epulis. All the patients were treated by ECO-100 microwave. It is concluded that 126 patients were cured (86.3%), 20 patients had good response (13.7%) after treatment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article was to observe the effect of by microwave thermocoagulation on oral benign tumor and to provide theoretical basis for clinic treatment of oral benign tumor. METHODS: 165 patients with oral benign tumor were included. There were 83 patients with oral bursa cyst, 42 patients with hemangioma, 19 patients with papilloma, 14 patients with fibrous hyperplasia and 7 patients with epulis. All the patients were treated by WB-100 microwave thermocoagulation. RESULTS: 144 patients were effective after the first treatment and 21 patients were effective after the second treatments. No side effect and reoccurrence were found after 3 years. CONCLUSION: Microwave thermocoagulation is an effective and safe method in clinic treatment of oral benign tumor.
