ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Caring is mostly considered a characteristic of women and men are considered hard-hearted. In the nursing profession, female nurses are considered more caring than male nurses which influence patients' views about the care provided by male nurses. There is limited knowledge about patients' beliefs and views about caring behaviors of male nurses. PURPOSE: To explore caring behaviors of male nurses from patients' perspectives. DESIGN: A descriptive qualitative study drawn from a larger convergent mixed methods study METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 15 patients from 14 medical surgical units of three private hospitals in Islamabad, Pakistan. Inductive thematic analysis was used for data analysis. FINDINGS: Patients reported that male nurses are respectful, considerate, good listener, unbiased, and supportive. CONCLUSION: These findings delineated five tangible caring behaviors that patients expect from the male nurses who care for them. It suggests that patients have specific expectations from their male nurses for providing effective nursing care. The male nurses can foster these behaviors to enhance their relationships with their patients.

ABSTRACT

The nursing studies narrative of the role of masculinity can be summarized as follows: hegemonic masculinity prevents men from doing care work. An analysis of public relations efforts to recruit male nurses in West Germany during the 1960s does not provide evidence for such a link. Representing nursing as compatible with hegemonic masculinity was also able to legitimize the existence of male nurses, while the idea of promoting gender equality in nursing was advocated by exactly those institutions that enabled the eventual gender inequality within the profession. Finally, the thesis of hegemonic masculinity as some kind of anti-caregiving agent comes into question because of the success of the civilian service in West Germany, despite the gender shaming used to deter men from enlisting in it.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Stereotype threat describes the apprehension individuals experience from the prospect of confirming negative self-relevant stereotypes. Due to their minority status, male nurses are believed to be susceptible to stereotype threat effects in the field of nursing. METHOD: One hundred eighty-three male nursing students were randomly assigned to one of three evaluative frames (patient management, empathy, or control) and tasked with completing an online patient simulation experiment. With empathy serving as a form of stereotype threat, participant responses were analyzed for tentative language use. RESULTS: An interaction effect (patient gender × frame) was observed, where participants were most tentative when the simulation involved a male patient in the empathy frame. CONCLUSION: Findings from the study offer encouragement as the communicative abilities of participants were not consistently influenced under conditions of stereotype threat. This provides support for the need to forearm male nurses against the pernicious effects of gender-based stereotypes. [J Nurs Educ. 2018;57(10):614-619.].

ABSTRACT

The number of men in professional caregiving roles has increased. While still a small percentage, the numbers of men in these roles continues to expand. Too often, the methods that professional male caregivers use to provide care differ from their female counterparts. There has not been much research conducted to understand how males in the professional role differ from their female counterparts in terms of caregiving characteristics.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nursing is predominantly a female profession and caring has been considered an attribute of female nurses, which could imply a noncaring image of male nurses. AIM: To determine patients' experiences and satisfaction from care provided by male nurses in a private hospital in Islamabad, Pakistan. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included a purposive sample of 50 patients admitted to medical surgical units for at least 2 days and who had at least three professional interactions with a male nurse. The Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. RESULTS: The total score for experience and satisfaction was 81 and 51, respectively. A statistically significant difference existed between experience and satisfaction scores of male and female participants, indicating that males were more pleased and satisfied with their experience of receiving care from male nurses compared to the female participants. CONCLUSION: The male nurses were concerned for their patients, they were knowledgeable about the patients' condition and care, and provided them with clear explanations of the medical and nursing procedures. However, they seem to lack interpersonal relationship with patients and did not take initiative in understanding their patients.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Historically, nursing has evolved from being a feminine profession to a profession accepted by both sexes. In the contemporary world, gender mainstreaming has been instituted as a global strategy in promoting gender equality. Though men continue to join nursing, they face many challenges. It is believed that through proper socialization some of the challenges can be addressed. In Malawi, there is dearth of literature on this subject. This resulted in undertaking the study. OBJECTIVE: The goal of the study was to describe experiences of male student nurses during undergraduate education in Malawi. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was utilised. Focus group discussions were conducted with study participants in purposively selected nursing colleges. FINDINGS: Male student nurse midwives faced more negative than positive experiences in nursing. The following three major themes were generated: nursing is a feminine occupation, facing discrimination and socialisation experienced. CONCLUSION: Malawian male student nurse midwives face both positive and negative experiences during their integration in nursing. Formulation and implementation of gender sensitive policies would help in strengthening male nurse education.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nursing is a career which, especially for male students, requires one making an informed choice prior to pursuing it. A mixed-method, qualitative study, investigating the professional socialization process of male student nurses in Malawi found that most students did not make an informed choice regarding their selected career. This resulted in some of them facing many challenges which compromised their academic performance, and in some cases, contributed to high attrition rates. An "unmet need" for career guidance was identified by the study participants. Further, the study participants made recommendations on the need to address the unmet need for career guidance. A brochure entitled "A career in nursing and midwifery in Malawi" was designed. This article reports on the validation of the brochure. OBJECTIVE: The goal of the study was to validate the brochure utilising the Nominal Group Technique. METHODS: The validation exercise was part of the mixed method study. Five steps of the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) were utilised, as expounded by Vigra-Atkins, aimed at evaluating the content contained in the brochure. Study participants in four nursing colleges (n = 37) participated by studying the draft brochure and identifying strong and weak areas for improvements. Responses were ranked based on group consensus. FINDINGS: A total of five groups were involved in NGT discussions. Four of the five groups found the brochure relevant and motivating to prospective students. However, two groups suggested that pictures needed to be more gender sensitive. CONCLUSION: Through the NGT, the brochure was commended by the majority of the participants as being clear and relevant in terms of giving information necessary for a nursing career choice. Finally, the authors recommend the use of the NGT compared to other group-based research techniques, considering the benefits the NGT offers.

ABSTRACT

Study whose objectives were to identify and analyze scientific production about the male insertion in the practice of nursing. This was an integrative review with sample of 47 articles published in national and international databases. The method used was a search strategy where an articulated the keywords with the words AND and OR in different combinations to find as many productions. The results showed four categories: the practice of nursing by men occurred in there ligious context and its physical strength; the feminization of nursing occurred by modernization with Florence Nightingale; it is easier to man in nursing to achieve power positions because of their masculinity and they also exercising the profession for personal fulfillment though they suffer preconception. It was concluded that nursing is still predominantly female but with the male presence gradually increasing. It was observed that for men to integrate into the nursing they develop strategies to overcome the difficulties of being a man and become nurse (AU)

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The situations in which patients prefer a male or female nurse are not clear, as the literature reports differing relationships between gender and preference. Furthermore, most research has focused on female preferences. METHODS: This questionnaire study investigated the preferences of both males and females for a male or female nurse, depending on four clinical situations. The role of age and previous experience with a male nurse was also taken into account. Gender, age and experience were further examined in relation to attitudes towards professional nursing practice. To determine whether preferences and attitudes have changed over time, the study was replicated in 2000, having been first conducted in 1984. Data were collected from the same general practice waiting room on each occasion. RESULTS: Consistent with previous research, the degree of intimacy in a clinical situation was found to be predictive of same-gender preferences. Younger females may prefer female nurses more than older females. Experience with male nurses was limited in both samples, but was not predictive of preferences or attitudes. CONCLUSIONS: Generally speaking, results from 1984 and 2000 were not significantly different. As a quantitative study, this research contributes to an understanding of patient preferences. However, in-depth, qualitative research is recommended to understand better the reasons for preferences and attitudes, for both male and female patients.

ABSTRACT

The extremely small number of men choosing the nursing profession as a career, coupled with the continuing shortage of nurses, prompted an investigation of male high school students' opinions about nursing. Kohler and Edwards' Career Questionnaire was administered to 126 male high school students representing grades 9-12 from three area public schools. Findings show that although the majority of subjects have a positive perception of nurses and nursing, the vast majority are not planning on entering the profession. Analysis of subjects' beliefs about nurses' financial status offers a possible explanation.
