ABSTRACT

At the beginning of the 20th century science was beginning to transform the world, including Brazil. All aspects of dentistry were considered essential to the welfare of the people and that may also have included orthodontics. It is possible then to assume that the manufacturing of some orthodontic appliances was already being taught in the educational courses. However, the lack of didactic orthodontic texts in Portuguese was a problem, when considering literature as one of the pillars that would support advancements in the science and practice of orthodontics. This difficulty, however, was solved in 1910, when the third edition of the Odontological Manual by Coelho e Souza was published including a chapter on orthodontics. Some years later Carlos Lustosa became interested in this subject after reading the paper by Angle that presented the ribbon arch appliance. He went to Pasadena (CA) and convinced Angle to accept him as a student. In 1923 he completed the course at the Angle School of Orthodontia, becoming the first Brazilian specialist in orthodontics. He treated patients with the ribbon arch until his death in 1937. However, did his search for knowledge outside the country influence the course of Brazilian orthodontics?

ABSTRACT

The idea of a global orthodontic organization, the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO), made up of national and regional orthodontic organizations, was realized in 1995 in San Francisco at the 4th International Orthodontic Congress that was held in conjunction with the 95th annual American Association of Orthodontists meeting. This umbrella organization strives to promote quality orthodontic care, practiced and delivered by orthodontic specialists in all parts of the world. In addition, it supports its member organizations with governing principles that promote appropriate membership criteria, qualified individual leadership participation, and long-term stability of the organization over time. In response to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic, the WFO has responded proactively and plans to augment its digital resources even further in the near future. This article describes the formation of the organization, the idea that germinated through the first three international orthodontic congresses, its workflow and membership criteria, the accountability and commitment it has toward its affiliates and individual members, and its plans for future years to come.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Background: In Sancti Spíritus province, the absence of documentary evidence about the history of the Orthodontic specialty was verified, so it is necessary a study to rescue information that contributes to the Cuban scientific heritage in health sciences, thus for the formation of the current and future human potential. Objective: To describe the historical development of the Orthodontic specialty in Sancti Spíritus province. Methodology: A qualitative research was carried out with the use of theoretical methods: historical-logical, analytical-synthetic and empirical: interview and documentary analysis, from 1980 to 2018. Results: From the emergence of the specialty in the province until 1999, health facilities were created to carry out Orthodontic care in the locality, which, potentiated by the creation of the group and the chapter, allowed the training of the first specialists despite the material limitations. In a second moment until today, the study plan was developed, services were extended to all municipalities and scientific production was increased (recognitions, awards, participation in national and international events and publications). Conclusions: The specialty has had a progressive development in the province as the teachers cloister has been strengthened, with a stable training of human capital that covers the care needs of the population in the territory and with scientific-technical results that endorse its current high level. The description of its historical evolution allows improving on the training of future generations thus, deep into other topics such as quality management.

ABSTRACT

From World War II to the end of 20th century, the types of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment and their reasons for doing so changed significantly. In the 1950s and 1960s, Canadian parents were told that orthodontics would "cure" inferiority complexes and protect children with crooked teeth, especially girls, from a life of delinquency and missed opportunities. By the last two decades of the 20th century, the consumer health movement and rising incomes empowered patients to decide which treatments were right for them, and an increasing number of adult patients sought orthodontic treatment to improve their appearance. Orthodontists never abandoned their claim that orthodontic treatment could improve psychological health, as while health psychologists and other researchers increasingly called this into question. But orthodontists did begin to place greater emphasis on aesthetics as a reason for treatment, and orthodontics became part of a much larger explosion in "cosmetic dentistry" procedures that came to include tooth whitening and veneers.

ABSTRACT

Scientific advancements result from previous knowledge which, in the light of new contributions, will be modified, expanded or rejected. In scientific publications bibliographic references contribute, or sometimes seem to provide authority to the authors. The objective of this analysis is to reflect upon the original publication of Dr. Andrews: "The six keys of normal occlusion" (AU)

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Alexis Schange was one of the first practitioners able to use accurate casts of the dental arches thanks to the invention of the impression-tray by Delabarre. Consequently, his diagnoses were more precise and his appliances fitted better than those of his predecessors. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The author will first outline the status of Orthodontics prior to Schange and the advent of the first casts, before describing Schange's contribution to Orthodontics. DISCUSSION: In 1841, Schange published his "Handbook of Dental Uprighting", a clear and pedagogical work and undoubtedly the best over the many years when Orthodontics was exclusively European.

ABSTRACT

There are so many compliments to Dr. Steven Lindauer that is hard for one to figure where to start from… Well, travelling backwards in time, all the way to the year 2000, I went to Virginia to study English at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), in Richmond, Virginia, USA. During my daily walks to the English school, I used to pass by the School of Dentistry, where the Department of Orthodontics was. That was the place where my very first "contact" with the VCU happened. In 2015, 15 years later, I had the pleasure to go back to the VCU and spend two days with Dr. Steven Lindauer. I have to confess that I was anxious and nervous to get to know not only the Chair of the Department, but also the Editor-in-chief of "The Angle Orthodontist". Since the very first moment I could experience how incredibly positive and pro-active the environment within the Department was. Staff members, Residents and Faculty members used to work very gladly and in perfect synergy. After a quick chat with the residents, I heard from them: "Dr. Lindauer is an unprecedented human being! Besides a brilliant Professor, Researcher and Administrator, he is like a father to all of us!" Besides this touching testimony, I also heard flattering compliments from workmates to the great friend, leader and partner Dr. Lindauer was. Here goes some food for thought, though. Unfortunately, the leader is often compelled to resort to unpopular measures in order to enforce compliance. Dr Lindauer is the living proof that a boss, a leader, can be a light, humble, friendly and highly charismatic human being. In 2016, I was given a second chance to enjoy Dr. Lindauer's company when he visited Brazil as a guest lecturer in Salvador, at the Federal University of Bahia and the Brazilian Association of Orthodontics (Bahia Chapter). I noticed, once again, that besides an excellent lecturer and careful clinician, he mastered orthodontic mechanics very proficiently. And needless to say at length about his brilliance ahead of "The Angle Orthodontist"... It didn't take me long to realize that his virtues by far exceeded the boundaries of the professional domain. Despite his utterly busy schedule, he is still able to dedicate time to his parents, taking them to trips around the world. Interestingly, at every international trip, he always remembers his puppies (Memphis, Baxter and Kingston - in memoriam), taking sightseeing pictures to immediately Photoshop them into. Having done the well deserved introductions to our distinguished interviewee, I would like to offer righteous acknowledgements to the colleagues Jorge Faber, David Turpin, Bhavna Shroff and David Normando, for having accepted the invitation to take part in this interview. I also would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to Dental Press for having entrusted me with the honor to conduct this project. I wish all readers as delightful and rich of an experience when going through this interview as it's been the scientific path that brought us all here in the first place. No doubts, you stand in face of a life dedicated to Orthodontics. (Andre Wilson Machado, interview coordinator).
