ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Rural public health system leaders struggle to access and use data for understanding local health inequities and to effectively allocate scarce resources to populations in need. This study sought to determine these rural public health system leaders' data access, capacity, and training needs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews across Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington with individuals expected to use population data for analysis or decision-making in rural communities. We used content analysis to identify themes. RESULTS: We identified 2 broad themes: (1) challenges in accessing or using data to monitor and address health disparities and (2) needs for training in data use to address health inequities. Participants faced challenges accessing or using data to address rural disparities due to (a) limited availability or access to data, (b) data quality issues, (c) limited staff with expertise and resources for analyzing data, and (d) the diversity within rural jurisdictions. Participants also expressed opportunities for filling capacity gaps through training-particularly for displaying and communicating data. DISCUSSION: Rural public health system leaders expressed data challenges, many of which can be aided by informatics solutions. These include interoperable, accessible, and usable tools that help capture, access, analyze, and display data to support health equity efforts in rural communities. CONCLUSION: Informatics has the potential to address some of the daunting data-related challenges faced by rural public health system leaders working to enhance health equity. Future research should focus on developing informatics solutions to support data access and use in rural communities.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Accurate morphological characterization of the multiple neuronal classes of the brain would facilitate the elucidation of brain function and the functional changes that underlie neurological disorders such as Parkinson's diseases or Schizophrenia. Manual morphological analysis is very time-consuming and suffers from a lack of accuracy because some cell characteristics are not readily quantified. This paper presents an investigation in the automatic classification of a data set of pyramidal neurons of young and adult monkeys, which degrade his morphologic structure with the aging. A set of 21 features were used to describe their morphology in order to identify differences between neurons. Thispaper evaluates the performance of four popular machine learning methods, in the classification of neural trees. The machine learning methods used are: support vector machines (SVMs), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), multinomial logistic regression (MLR) and back propagation neural network (BPNN). The results showed the advantages of MLR and BPNN with respect to others for this purposes. These automatic classification algorithms offer advantages over manual expert based classification. While neuroscience is rapidly transitioning to digital data, the principles behind automatic classification algorithms remain often inaccessible to neuroscientists, limiting the potential for breakthroughs(AU)

ABSTRACT

The analysis of the stability that present the systems when being in front of certain variations of the initial conditions and the parameters that it characterize, it is today one of the important studies that carried out to the dynamic systems. The existent methods until the moment don't allow making this analysis in more than a time series at the same time, because in general they annul the ability to gather in oneself study the possibility to verify how they influence the variations. That´s the reason why the present work has the purpose of to put in the investigator's hands a methodology that allows to study the stability of the Systems of n-dimensional Differential Equations, regarding the variation of the parameters of the same one and to interpret the obtained results. Specifically like essential part of the methodology was used the function lyapunov developed inside the mathematical assistant Matlab and for the analysis of those results the technique of Datamining was included: Trees of Decision, also wanting to have results in the smallest possible time, one worked with the Platform of Tasks Distributed T-arenal. The methodology was applied to a case of study reported in the literature and one was proven that it was obtained the same classification of stability or uncertainty. On the other hand, when carrying out the analysis in a quantity of time series, the time in that the result was obtained was considerably small, concerning its complexity(AU)

ABSTRACT

Health informatics has experienced a great progress in recent years, that is why most of these services require software and mathematical models for its proper functioning; for example, in planning cardiovascular surgeries. This article is about improving and adaptation of the method proposed by Pradenas and Matamala to the conditions of Cardiocentro Ernesto Che Guevara from Villa Clara, Cuba. The obtained model guaranties the prioritization of those patients with greater severity of their illness; thus, total number of surgeries will have a proportional distribution for each provinces, according to the number of inhabitants. This mathematical model allows resolving the difficult situation in which it has been working for some years(AU)

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To survey advances in public health and epidemiology informatics over the past three years. METHODS: We conducted a review of English-language research works conducted in the domain of public health informatics (PHI), and published in MEDLINE between January 2012 and December 2014, where information and communication technology (ICT) was a primary subject, or a main component of the study methodology. Selected articles were synthesized using a thematic analysis using the Essential Services of Public Health as a typology. RESULTS: Based on themes that emerged, we organized the advances into a model where applications that support the Essential Services are, in turn, supported by a socio-technical infrastructure that relies on government policies and ethical principles. That infrastructure, in turn, depends upon education and training of the public health workforce, development that creates novel or adapts existing infrastructure, and research that evaluates the success of the infrastructure. Finally, the persistence and growth of infrastructure depends on financial sustainability. CONCLUSIONS: Public health informatics is a field that is growing in breadth, depth, and complexity. Several Essential Services have benefited from informatics, notably, "Monitor Health," "Diagnose & Investigate," and "Evaluate." Yet many Essential Services still have not yet benefited from advances such as maturing electronic health record systems, interoperability amongst health information systems, analytics for population health management, use of social media among consumers, and educational certification in clinical informatics. There is much work to be done to further advance the science of PHI as well as its impact on public health practice.

ABSTRACT

Team-based healthcare delivery models, which emphasize care coordination, patient engagement, and utilization of health information technology, are emerging. To achieve these models, expertise in interprofessional education, collaborative practice across professions, and informatics is essential. This case study from informatics programs in the Academic Health Center (AHC) at the University of Minnesota and the Office of Health Information Technology (OHIT) at the Minnesota Department of Health presents an academic-practice partnership, which focuses on both interprofessionalism and informatics. Outcomes include the Minnesota Framework for Interprofessional Biomedical Health Informatics, comprising collaborative curriculum development, teaching and research, practicums to promote competencies, service to advance biomedical health informatics, and collaborative environments to facilitate a learning health system. Details on these Framework categories are presented. Partnership success is due to interprofessional connections created with emphasis on informatics and to committed leadership across partners. A limitation of this collaboration is the need for formal agreements outlining resources and roles, which are vital for sustainability. This partnership addresses a recommendation on the future of interprofessionalism: that both education and practice sectors be attuned to each other's expectations and evolving trends. Success strategies and lessons learned from collaborations, such as that of the AHC-OHIT that promote both interprofessionalism and informatics, need to be shared.
