ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective We aim to describe an experimental model for studying femoral fractures in rats after exposure to ionizing radiation, demonstrating a way to apply a substance for analysis, the method for patterning fracture and irradiation, and how to evaluate its effectiveness based on radiographic studies. Methods We used 24 rats divided into 2 groups of 12 animals each. The STUDY group was exposed to ionizing radiation and treated with saline solution, and the CONTROL group was not exposed to radiation and was treated with saline solution. All animals were subjected to standardized fracture of the right femur that was fixed with intramedullary wire. The efficiency of the bone union was assessed by radiographic exam. Results Fracture healing was more efficient in bones not exposed to ionizing radiation (p = 0.012). All fractures met the criteria of being simple, diaphyseal, transverse or short oblique. Conclusion The experimental model presented is an efficient alternative for the study of fractures in irradiated bones in rats.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objectives: To evaluate the photoprotective activity of a cream with lyophilized aqueous extract of maca (LEM) against ultraviolet (UV) irradiation in the skin of mice. Materials and methods: An experimental study was carried out on 35 BALB/c mice. Treatment was applied topically on the dorsum of the animals, which were subsequently irradiated with ultraviolet B rays, and then we measured the thickness in microns (μm) of histological samples of the skin of the mice. Seven groups were assigned, divided into non-irradiated: Blank (G1) and irradiated with UV light: no treatment (G2); with commercial sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) 30 (G3); cream (placebo) (G4); LEM at 15% in water (G5); LEM cream at 5% (G6); and LEM cream at 15% (G7). In vitro SPF was determined using the Mansur method. Absorbance readings were taken in an ultraviolet- visible spectrophotometer (UV-VIS) and SPFs were determined for the following formulations: LEM cream at 5%, benzophenone-4 (BZF-4) and commercial sunscreen SPF 30. Results: Mouse skin thickness in microns (μm) was 27.28 in G2; 18.31 in G3; 27.33 in G4; 19.51 in G5 and 18.04 in G6. There was no significant difference between the group not exposed to radiation (G1) and the 15% LEM cream group (G7), both had the lowest thicknesses (12.76 and 14.20 μm, respectively). The SPF of LEM cream at 15% was 5.480 ± 0.020. Conclusions: The formulation with LEM cream showed photoprotective activity against UV irradiation, alkaloids were the phytochemical components mostly found and the formulation was compatible with the active principle (LEM).

ABSTRACT

Introduction: sunscreen is a cosmetic used to protect human skin from the deleterious effects of UV radiation and thus minimize the risks of developing skin cancer. Extracts produced from fruits, such as Abiu, Guava, Rambutan and Grape, have significant concentrations of chromophores and phenolic substances that have the ability to absorb UV light and neutralize free radicals. The production of cosmetics from naturally occurring substances with such activities will be of great importance for Brazilian industry and could reduce the cost of production, given the large existing biodiversity in the country. Objectives: carry out a patent search for formulations and cosmetic products that contains phenolic rich fruit extracts as photoprotective and antioxidant bioactives. Methodology: a survey of patents was carried out in the database of the National Institute of Intellectual Property (INPI) and the European Patent Office (EPO), covering a time period between 2008 and 2018, using a combination of keywords related to herbal cosmetics and sunscreens. Results: this research identifies a significant number of patents related to plant extract in association with sunscreen product, however, no patent filings were identified for cosmetic products containing extracts of the evaluated fruits, either alone or in combination, for photoprotective and antioxidant purposes. Conclusion: the Brazilian and international market for sun care products moves millions to billions of dollars annually and have a significant annual growth prospect. Considering the great biodiversity existing in the country, the production of cosmetics from naturally occurring substances with such activities will be of great importance for the Brazilian industrial sector.

ABSTRACT

Sanitization using chemical agents to reduce the microbiological load on the surface of agricultural products have the drawback of leaving residues. Conversely, physical treatments, such as ultraviolet radiation C (UV-C), are residue-free, non-toxic and environmentally friendly. Ripe figs are perishable, exhibiting an epidermis with low resistance to mechanical treatment, high water content and the ostiole, which is an open door that expedites undesirable microorganism penetration. In this study, the effect of different energy levels of UV-C radiation on the appearance and physico-chemical properties of the figs when stored at 10 °C and 20 °C was evaluated focusing on the technological parameters of the application of radiation. The energy levels of radiation applied were 0.00, 0.71, 1.32, 2.64 and 4.01 kJ m−2 and they showed neither acceleration nor delay effects on fig ripening. Figs exposed to the radiation energy at 0.71, 1.32, 2.64 and 4.01 kJ m−2 showed a lower incidence of rot at the same temperature, but the figs exposed to the highest radiation, 4.01 kJ m−2, showed more wilting and stains, which significantly impaired their appearance. UV-C radiation reduces the development of rotting, providing evidence of its potential in the postharvest processing of ripe figs. However, radiation levels should be limited to avoid undesirable epidermis stains.

ABSTRACT

Radio frequency plasma, RF plasma, has been applied to a number of industrial applications. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the RF plasma potential in Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) control. Three treatment variables: (1) helium or argon plasmas; (2) two power levels (50 and 100 watt); and (3) different RF plasma exposure times (0, 20, 40, 60 and 90 seconds) were examined in this study. The susceptibility of T. castaneum to treatment varies as gas, power level, and the exposure time varies. A positive correlation was found between insect mortality percent in treating larvae as well as treated pupae and exposure time to RF plasma and also the power level of irradiation. The results revealed that no live insects were found after a 90 second, 100 watt helium RF plasma treatment. The survival percents of the adults were developed from treated larvae and treated pupae were significantly reduced by increasing of the exposure time or power level. Obtained data indicated that the treatment with RF plasma might be considered as an environmentally compatible or alternative supplement to the other control methods for stored product-pests management.(AU)

ABSTRACT

(AU)

We adopted the same study design, to verify if the results of your evaluation of the frequency of micronuclei (MN) in cell phone users were comparable to the results obtained in this similar study in Cordoba, Argentina. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To study ADN damage from radiofrequency exposure associated with cell phone, MN (cell markers of genomic damage) were studied in exfoliated buccal cells, extracted from right and left internal cheek cell smears of cell phone in 83 healthy volunteers from 18 to 36 years. RESULTS: The MN frequencies were analyzed by the duration and the preferential side of use of the cell phone. No relationship was observed between the MN frequency and the duration of use as well as the preferential side. CONCLUSION: our results suggest that exposure to radiofrequency in the observed levels does not induce the formation of MN in buccal cells. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Introduction: This research work was carried out in the city of Honda, Colombia. It identified the effect of tree shade on temperature attenuation, relative humidity, soil surface temperature, solar and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and determined water requirements for arboreal vegetation. Methodology: Data on air and soil surface temperature, relative air humidity, solar and UV radiation were taken under the shade of trees and at full exposure. Results: It was found that the air temperature ranged from 50ºC at full sun exposure to 41ºC under shade. The surface temperature was 66.8ºC and 42.6ºC under shade. The variation of the registered solar radiation offered a value of 17.13 mW/cm2 at full solar exposure and 1.69 mW/cm2 under shade. The UV radiation presented values of 8 at full solar exposure and 5 under shade. The water demand per plant/day varied between 5 and more than 500 liters, being the daily demand close to 2500 m3. Conclusions: There is no irrigation of trees in the city which leads to a water deficit evidenced by the loss of foliage causing minimal attenuations to UV radiation. The most relevant species regarding shade are almond (Terminalia cattapa), Pallandé (Pitecellobium dulce), orange (Capparis odoratissima), guayacán carrapo (Bulnesia carrapo), chirlobirlo (Tecoma stands), cumula (Aspidosperma polyneuron) and mango (Manguifera indica). Trees can generate a good ecosystem service by shade which is mediated by the selection of the species and the management of the trees.

ABSTRACT

Several topical products are developed in order to avoid the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, including sunscreens made by physical and/or chemical filters. However, chemical filters may promote adverse events, which is why the search for actives from natural sources has proven to be of great importance. The microalgae Botryococcus braunii may be of potential interest in cosmetic applications, because it has been reported that its aqueous extract showed a reduction in skin dehydration, induced collagen production and promoted antioxidant activity. Thus, the study aimed to analyze the contribution of B. braunii in skin photoprotection and skin protection through in vitro antioxidant action. The formulations, consisting of biomass from the microalgae or their extracts, supplemented or not by filters, were evaluated for: antioxidant activity, photoprotective activity in vitro and photostability. The B. braunii showed good growth performance, containing lipids (25.65%) and protein (49.17%) in similar proportion to the described by the literature. The presence of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity were analyzed in extracts obtained with chloroform, methanol and 70% ethanol. The extract obtained with 70% ethanol showed the highest concentration of total phenolics (68.9 mg/mL caffeic acid), but lower than that reported in the literature; and the antioxidant action was not considered significant when compared to the Trolox® standard. In the formulations, the extracts were considered inefficient for antioxidant action. In relation to the in vitro photoprotection activity and photostability, B. braunii did not provide adequate efficacy, however, there is a possibility that the extracts have an ability to act in the visible light region and contribute to the protection from the harmful effects caused by that radiation to the skin

ABSTRACT

The standard approach to the follow-up of lymphoma includes computed tomography (CT) every 6-12 months for the first 2 years and, then, as clinically indicated. Recent evidence suggests that most relapses are detected clinically, outside scheduled CT which, on the other hand, increases risk of second malignancies and cost. In early-stage lymphomas, involved site CT instead of full body CT may be a reasonable alternative to reduce radiation dose. We analyzed whether regular CT surveillance detects asymptomatic relapses in a single-center Uruguayan early stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) population. We evaluated utility of full body CT halfway and at the end-of-treatment evaluation and calculated the radiation exposure. In our study, CT surveillance added nothing to clinical follow-up. Moreover, 44% of our patients received a cumulative effective dose that doubles the risk of malignancies. Involved-site CT scan would be enough to monitor response during treatment in early stage NHL.

ABSTRACT

Background: Since ionizing radiation has the potential to alter the molecular structure and affect the biologica properties of biomolecules, it has been successfully employed to attenuate animal toxins. The present study aimed to characterize the structural modifications on irradiated crotamine, a toxin from Crotalus durissus terrificus venom, using circular dichroism (CD), fluorescence, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Methods: A combination of size exclusion and ion-exchange chromatography was used to purify the peptide using crude venom. The pure toxin was then submitted to 2 kGy gamma irradiation doses from a cobalt-60 source. Native and irradiated crotamine were analyzed using a fluorescence spectrophotometer. Wavelength was fixed at 295 nm and fluorescence emission scans were collected from 300 to 400 nm. CD and FTIR techniques were used to identify the secondary structure of both samples. DSC analyses were performed at a starting temperature of 20 °C up to a final temperature of 90 °C. AFM provided a 3D profile of the surfaces of both crotamine forms adsorbed on mica. Results: Fluorescence spectroscopy showed that the quantum yield of the irradiated form decreased. CD spectra of native and irradiated crotamine solutions showed differences between the samples in wavelength, indicating that irradiation induced a transition of a small portion of the random coil regions towards an a-helical conformation. FTIR and CD showed that the native and irradiated crotamine spectra were different with regard to secondary structure. The thermodynamic analysis showed that irradiation caused changes in the calorimetric profile and CD showed that temperature-induced changes also occur in the secondary structure. Finally, AFM showed the possible formation of insoluble aggregates. Conclusions: Our results indicate that irradiation leads to progressive changes in the structure of the toxin, which could explain a decrease in myotoxic activity.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of low intensity red light on some kinetic parameters of cryopreserved canine sperm. Ejaculates from 08 adult dogs were centrifuged, diluted in Tris-egg yolk with 6% glycerol, and subsequently separated into: T1: incidence of red light (660 nm) (Fisioled -MMOptics - 100mW) for 60 seconds before the cooling and after thawing, T2: just before cooling, T3: only after thawing, and T4: no incidence. After thawing the samples were subjected to TTR using Sperm analyzer(r). In TTR0, TTR60 and TTR90 there were no differences between the variables analyzed by CASA. Only in TTR30 the effects of the incidence of red light were visible and significant in T1 and T2. T1 resulted in low MT (12.5 ±10.6%) and T2 determined the best result of MT 26.1%±40.3. Similarly T1 showed a higher number of static spermatozoa (77.5±28.9%) compared to T2 (50.6±28%). We concluded that the double incidence of low intensity red light, before cooling and after thawing, had a deleterious effect on canine sperm motility expressed at 30 minutes after thawing.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the biological and reproductiv e performance of Aedes aegyptimales sterilized by gamma radiation and its potential for use in controlling the species through the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). The sterilization efficacy of different doses of gamma radiation, 30, 40 and 50 Gy, was assessed in irradiated males (IM) in the pupal stage. The direct effects of gama radiation on the longevity and competitiveness of IM, as well as the effect on the fecundity and fertility of females mated with these males, and also irradiated females (IF), were analyzed. The competitiveness was examined by tests conducted in large cage (2 x 2 meters) in semi field conditions where irradiated males (IM) and non-irradiated males (NIM) were released in the following proportions: 5:1, 10:1 and 15:1. The results revealed that the biological and reproductive fitness of the mosquitoes are affected by radiation, so that the effects are directly proportional to the radiation dose. The longevity parameter showed significant differences...
