ABSTRACT

Treatment with such analgetics as analginum, promedol and pantopon was shown experimentally either to inhibit or to stimulate the growth of sarcoma-37 and its dissemination. It was also found to reduce the tumor growth--stimulating effect of operative trauma.

ABSTRACT

Light scattering (90 degrees) of Ehrlich ascites tumor and sarcoma 37 cell suspension in the temperature range 25-60 degrees C was studied (heating velocity was 3 grad/min). It is found that the scattering curve has the peak at 46 degrees C and two plots which are typical of phase transitions in the membranes; the first plot in the range 40-46 degrees C is reversible and the second one at 46-51 degrees C is irreversible. It is proposed that 46 degrees is a critical temperature for the membranes structure stability and viability of the studied cells.

ABSTRACT

Using morhometric autoradiographic and cytophotometric methods, the author examined the changes in the size of the nucleus, and of the cell as well as of the ratio: surface of the nucleus (surface of the cytoplasma in sarcoma-37 ascitic variant in accordance with their position in the generative cycle. The cells with small sizes of the nucleus 30 microns 2 were not labelled with 3H-thymidine and were found mainly in Gi-phase of the cycle. The labelled cells with nuclear sizes of 40-60 microns 2 were at the S-phase of the cycle. The labelled cells with larger sizes of the nucleus either were leaving S and entered Gi phase of the cycle or there was a subpopulation of cells with an increased number of chromosomes. The data on the presence of nonlabelled nuclei and cells with equal cells with equal sizes of those of the labelled cells as well as the elevated values of DNA, exceeding the tetraploid region of the hystogram, suggested heterogenesis of the cellular population in sarcoma-37.

ABSTRACT

The inoculation of sarcoma-37 against the background of the ganglionary blockade, provided by the intraperitoneal injection of 1 ml of pentamine, is not associated with its less take rate, but there is a manifest suppression of the tumor growth during the period up to 63 days. A preliminary ganglionary blockade completely eliminates the stimulating effect of a trauma on the tumor growth.

ABSTRACT

There were two inhibition periods of the growth of ascitic hepatoma 22a when its cells were transplanted intraperitoneally to partially hepatectomized A/he mice 1 to 12 days after the operation. The first inhibition took place when the transplantation was performed one day, and the second--3 to 10 days, after partial hepatectomy. The animals which were most resistant to this tumour (5 to 8 days after the operation) proved to be resistant, although to a lesser extent, to the intraperitoneal transplantation of sarcoma 37 and Ehrlich's adenocarcinoma.

ABSTRACT

Procedures for producing, monitoring, and maintaining 3-hr 400-500-mg% whole blood glucose levels in Sarcoma-37 (S-37) transplanted virgin female inbred DBA/2J mice are described. Aqueous infused 40% (w/v) dextrose was evaluated as a potential therapeutic factor. The effects of procedural variations on treatment survival and longevity are discussed. One hundred percent infusion safety and 25% increased longevity over nontreated transplanted mice were achieved. Doxorubicin and/or dacarbazine were also evaluated when administered prior to the dextrose infusion. Doxorubicin followed by intravenous dextrose increased survivor longevity by 37%, but this combination was unsafe at the drug dosages employed. A large dose of dacarbazine was safe and effective alone but unsafe when given prior to the infusion, although the survivors lived 29% longer than the untreated transplanted controls. Both drugs were marginally effective, but safe, when given together. When given together prior to the infusion, only 87% survived the treatment. The survivors lived 6 days longer than the controls.

ABSTRACT

The synchronizing effect of hydroxyurea on the passage of the esophagus epithelia cells through the stage of the DNA synthesis and mitosis was investigated in albino mice bearing sarcoma. Dinrnal variations in the number of epithelial cells at these stages of the mitotic cycle were taken into consideration. Two mutually complementary indices for the measurement of the shifts in the cell population and the rate of the synchronization are used. Two cell groups which passed the S-phase and mitosis synchronously were found in artificial synchronization in the esophageal epithelium. The synchronization indices characterizing the first group were lower than control. In the second group the cell count during the DNA synthesis was double as compared with the number of cells synthesizing DNA in natural synchronization; however, the rate of the changes in the synchronism was the same in the experimental and control groups.
