ABSTRACT

The estrogen receptor signaling pathway plays an important role in vertebrate embryonic development and sexual differentiation. There are four major estrogen receptors in zebrafish: esr1, esr2a, esr2b and gper. However, the specific role of different estrogen receptors in zebrafish is not clear. To investigate the role of esr2b in zebrafish development and reproduction, this study utilized TALENs technology to generate an esr2b knockout homozygous zebrafish line. The number of eggs laid by esr2b knockout female zebrafish did not differ significantly from that of wild zebrafish. The embryonic development process of wild-type and esr2b knockout zebrafish was observed, revealing a significant developmental delay in the esr2b knockout zebrafish. Additionally, mortality rates were significantly higher in esr2b knockout zebrafish than in their wild-type counterparts at 24 hpf. The reciprocal cross experiment between esr2b knockout zebrafish and wild-type zebrafish revealed that the absence of esr2b resulted in a decline in the quality of zebrafish oocytes, while having no impact on sperm cells. The knockout of esr2b also led to an abnormal sex ratio in the adult zebrafish population, with a female-to-male ratio of approximately 1:7. The quantitative PCR (qPCR) and in situ hybridization results demonstrated a significant downregulation of cyp19ab1b expression in esr2b knockout embryos compared to wild-type embryos throughout development (at 2 dpf, 3 dpf and 4 dpf). Additionally, the estrogen-mediated induction expression of cyp19ab1b was attenuated, while the estradiol-induced upregulated expression of vtg1 was disrupted. These results suggest that esr2b is involved in regulating zebrafish oocyte development and sex differentiation.

ABSTRACT

Group living may entail local resource competition (LRC) which can be reduced if the birth sex ratio (BSR) is biased towards members of the dispersing sex who leave the group and no longer compete locally with kin. In primates, the predicted relationship between dispersal and BSR is generally supported although data for female dispersal species are rare and primarily available from captivity. Here, we present BSR data for Phayre's leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus phayrei crepusculus) at the Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand (N = 104). In this population, nearly all natal females dispersed, while natal males stayed or formed new groups nearby. The slower reproductive rate in larger groups suggests that food can be a limiting resource. In accordance with LRC, significantly more females than males were born (BSR 0.404 males/all births) thus reducing future competition with kin. This bias was similar in 2-year-olds (no sex-differential mortality). It became stronger in adults, supporting our impression of particularly fierce competition among males. To better evaluate the importance of BSR, more studies should report sex ratios throughout the life span, and more data for female dispersal primates need to be collected, ideally for multiple groups of different sizes and for several years.

ABSTRACT

The causes and consequences of sex-ratio dynamics constitutes a pivotal subject in evolutionary biology1. Under conditions of evolutionary equilibrium, the male-to-female ratio tends to be approximately 1:1; however, this equilibrium is susceptible to distortion by selfish genetic elements exemplified by driving sex chromosomes and cytoplasmic elements2,3. Although previous studies have documented instances of these genetic elements distorting the sex ratio, studies specifically tracking the process with which these distorters spread within populations, leading to a transition from balanced parity to a skewed, female-biased state, are notably lacking. Herein, we present compelling evidence documenting the rapid spread of the cytoplasmic endosymbiont Wolbachia within a localized population of the pierid butterfly Eurema hecabe (Figure 1A). This spread resulted in a shift in the sex ratio from near parity to an exceedingly skewed state overwhelmingly biased toward females, reaching 93.1% within a remarkably brief period of 4 years.

ABSTRACT

Infanticide and adoption have been attributed to sexual selection, where an individual later reproduces with the parent whose offspring it killed or adopted. While sexually selected infanticide is well known, evidence for sexually selected adoption is anecdotal. We report on both behaviors at 346 nests over 27 y in green-rumped parrotlets (Forpus passerinus) in Venezuela. Parrotlets are monogamous with long-term pair bonds, exhibit a strongly male-biased adult sex ratio, and nest in cavities that are in short supply, creating intense competition for nest sites and mates. Infanticide attacks occurred at 256 nests in two distinct contexts: 1) Attacks were primarily committed by nonbreeding pairs (69%) attempting to evict parents from the cavity. Infanticide attacks per nest were positively correlated with population size and evicting pairs never adopted abandoned offspring. Competition for limited nest sites was a primary cause of eviction-driven infanticide, and 2) attacks occurred less frequently at nests where one mate died (31%), was perpetrated primarily by stepparents of both sexes, and was independent of population size. Thus, within a single species and mating system, infanticide occurred in multiple contexts due to multiple drivers. Nevertheless, 48% of stepparents of both sexes adopted offspring, and another 23% of stepfathers exhibited both infanticide and long-term care. Stepfathers were often young males who subsequently nested with widows, reaching earlier ages of first breeding than competitors and demonstrating sexually selected adoption. Adoption and infanticide conferred similar fitness benefits to stepfathers and appeared to be equivalent strategies driven by limited breeding opportunities, male-biased sex ratios, and long-term monogamy.

ABSTRACT

Males and females often have different roles in reproduction, although the origin of these differences has remained controversial. Explaining the enigmatic reversed sex roles where males sacrifice their mating potential and provide full parental care is a particularly long-standing challenge in evolutionary biology. While most studies focused on ecological factors as the drivers of sex roles, recent research highlights the significance of social factors such as the adult sex ratio. To disentangle these propositions, here, we investigate the additive and interactive effects of several ecological and social factors on sex role variation using shorebirds (sandpipers, plovers, and allies) as model organisms that provide the full spectrum of sex role variation including some of the best-known examples of sex-role reversal. Our results consistently show that social factors play a prominent role in driving sex roles. Importantly, we show that reversed sex roles are associated with both male-skewed adult sex ratios and high breeding densities. Furthermore, phylogenetic path analyses provide general support for sex ratios driving sex role variations rather than being a consequence of sex roles. Together, these important results open future research directions by showing that different mating opportunities of males and females play a major role in generating the evolutionary diversity of sex roles, mating system, and parental care.

ABSTRACT

The sex ratio at birth (ratio of males to females) has been known to be affected by exogenous shocks such as wars, pollution, natural catastrophes, economic crises, and others. Among these stressful events, both earthquakes and the COVID-19 pandemic have been reported to lower the sex ratio at birth. In this article, a rather unusual situation of two episodes of simultaneous events of COVID-19 lockdown and earthquakes approximately nine months apart (March and December of 2020) is investigated to assess whether they were associated with a bias in sex ratio at birth 3-5 months later (in utero loss) and 9 months later (loss at conception) in Croatia. The monthly time series of sex ratio at birth, total number of births, and total number of both male and female births from January 2010 to December 2021 were analyzed. Seasonally adjusted autoregressive moving-average models were used to estimate the functional form of the time series from January 2010 to February 2020. These results were used to predict the future values of the series until December 2021 and to compare them with the actual values. For all series used, there was no indication of deviation from the values predicted by the models, neither for 3-5 months nor for 9 months after the COVID-19 lockdown and earthquake events. The possible mechanisms of the absence of bias, such as the threshold of the stressful events and its localized reach, as well as the statistical methods employed, are discussed.

ABSTRACT

The sex ratio shift was observed in peoples who underwent ART treatment. Moreover, there is limited evidence on differences in sex ratio between single frozen-thawed blastocyst morphology, insemination type and transfer days. So further research is needed in this area with regard to factors possibly affecting the sex ratio. Retrospective study based on multicenter including two large assisted reproduction centers in Shanghai and Wuhan in China. A total of 6361 singleton delivery offspring after frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer. Propensity score weighting and logistic regression models were used to estimate the associations between blastocyst morphology grading and child sex ratio. The main outcome measures is singleton sex ratio. In our study, the primary outcome measure was sex ratio which was calculated as the proportion of male newborns among all live births. Higher quality blastocysts resulted in a higher sex ratio than single poor-quality frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer. Among the three blastocyst morphological parameters of trophectoderm (TE), Grade A and B were significantly associated with a higher sex ratio than Grade C. The similar trend was observed in both IVF and ICSI treated subgroups. As compared with expansion (4 + 3), expansion degree 6 achieved a higher sex ratio in overall populations and IVF treated subgroup. Transferring blastocysts of day 6 had the highest sex ratio both in IVF group and ICSI group. A 6.95% higher sex ratio in transferring blastocysts of day 5 in IVF group than those in ICSI group. No significant association between inner cell mass degree and sex ratio was observed. However, as compared with IVF treatment, all morphology parameters achieved the similar or the biased sex ratio favoring female in ICSI treated subgroup. Quality of blastocysts was positively associated with sex ratio. TE score and expansion degree rather than ICM were significantly associated with sex ratio at birth. ICSI treatment promotes the biased sex ratio favoring female.

ABSTRACT

The medical literature has shown that populations under high stress have a lower sex ratio at birth (i.e. number of males for every 100 females). In this paper, I examine the relationship between income, as a source of economic stress, and the sex ratio at a subnational level for the 1895-2010 period. For this, I use census microdata from Argentina -a developing country that experienced rapid growth at the end of the 19th century and stagnated in recent decades- and I estimate from a two-way fixed effects model that exploits the wide temporal and geographic variability in income. The results show that as per capita income increases, the sex ratio at birth also increases. In particular, for every US$ 1,000 increase in per capita income, the sex ratio increases between 0.3 and 0.6 points. These findings make it possible to quantify the lost boys (i.e. those boys who were not born due to high economic stress on their parents) and constitute a call for attention in favor of the implementation of prenatal care policies -especially in periods of stagnation or income decline- to maintain a more balanced sex ratio.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of environmental sex determination (ESD) in squamate reptiles is often overestimated in the literature. This is surprising because we have reliable data demonstrating ESD in only a few species. The documentation of ESD in three species of geckos presented here has significantly increased our knowledge, given that satisfactory evidence for ESD existed in only eight other gecko species. For the first time, we document the occurrence of ESD in the family Sphaerodactylidae. Our finding of unexpected variability in the shapes of reaction norms among geckos highlights that traditional descriptions using parameters such as pivotal temperature, that is, temperature producing a 50:50 sex ratio, are unsatisfactory. For example, the gecko Pachydactylus tigrinus lacks any pivotal temperature and its sex ratios are strongly female-biased across the entire range of viable temperatures. We argue for the effective capture of the relationship between temperature and sex ratio using specific nonlinear models rather than using classical simplistic descriptions and classifications of reaction norms.

ABSTRACT

Sexual dimorphism can evolve in response to sex-specific selection pressures that vary across habitats. We studied sexual differences in subterranean amphipods Niphargus living in shallow subterranean habitats (close to the surface), cave streams (intermediate), and cave lakes (deepest and most isolated). These three habitats differ because at greater depths there is lower food availability, reduced predation, and weaker seasonality. Additionally, species near the surface have a near-even adult sex ratio (ASR), whereas species from cave lakes have a female-biased ASR. We hypothesized (a) a decrease in sexual dimorphism from shallow subterranean habitats to cave lake species because of weaker sexual selection derived from changes in the ASR and (b) an increase in female body size in cave lakes because of stronger fecundity selection on account of oligotrophy, reduced predation, and weaker seasonality. We measured body size and two sexually dimorphic abdominal appendages for all 31 species and several behaviours related to male competition (activity, risk-taking, exploration) for 12 species. Species with an equal ASR that live close to the surface exhibited sexual dimorphism in all three morphological traits, but not in behaviour. The body size of females increased from the surface to cave lakes, but no such trend was observed in males. In cave lake species, males and females differed neither morphologically nor behaviourally. Our results are consistent with the possibility that sexual and fecundity selection covary across the three habitats, which indirectly and directly, respectively, shape the degree of sexual dimorphism in Niphargus species.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to provide a detailed analysis of clinical and laboratory factors associated with skewed secondary sex ratio (SSR) after ART. METHOD: Retrospective cohort study of embryos resulting in live births, from frozen and fresh single blastocyst transfers. Embryos were cultured in either G-TL (n = 686) or Sage media (n = 685). Data was analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression model and a mixed model analysis. RESULTS: Significantly more male singletons were born after culture in Sage media compared to G-TL media (odds ratio (OR) 1.34, 95% CI (1.05, 1.70), P = 0.02). Inner cell mass grade B vs A (OR 1.36 95% CI (1.05, 1.76), P = 0.02) and one previous embryo transfer (OR 1.49, 95% CI (1.03, 2.16), P = 0.03) were associated with a significantly higher probability of male child at birth. Factors associated with a reduced probability of male child were expansion grade 3 vs 5 (OR 0.66, 95% CI (10.45, 0.96), P = 0.03) and trophectoderm grade B vs A (OR 0.57, 95% CI (0.44, 0.74), P = 0.00). Male embryos developed significantly faster in Sage media compared to G-TL media for the stages of blastocyst (- 1.12 h, 95% CI (- 2.12, - 0.12)), expanded blastocyst (- 1.35 h, 95% CI (- 2.34, - 0.35)), and hatched blastocyst (- 1.75 h, 95% CI (- 2.99, - 0.52)). CONCLUSION: More male children were born after culture in Sage media compared to G-TL media. Male embryo development was affected by culture media. Our observations suggest that culture media impact male embryo quality selectively, thus potentially favoring the selection of male embryos.

BACKGROUND: The experience of depressive manifestations and the presentation of symptoms in clinical settings may differ in men and women. Despite the extensive literature, it remains unclear how depressive manifestations interact at symptom levels in men and women. First, we aimed to describe and compare depressive networks by sex. Second, we examined symptom connections to Clinical depression and Functional Limitations as a proxy of self-recognition of a depressive episode. METHODS: We estimated networks from the 20 CES-D items in men and women from a large population-based French cohort. We computed centrality measures and ran comparisons. Then, we re-estimated two networks in men and women separately, adding, on the one hand, Clinical Depression and, on the other hand, Limitations due to a depressive episode. RESULTS: Over 200,000 participants were included in this study. Women were twice as likely to have a previous diagnosis of depression. Sex-ratio was less pronounced (1,7:1) for Limitations due to depression. Centrality measures revealed similar symptom patterns. However, network structures differed between men and women. We found some symptom connections to Clinical depression and Limitations to be non-invariant according to sex. LIMITATIONS: Cross-sectional data does not capture the direction of the connections between symptoms and an eventual diagnosis. We lacked data about the diagnosis's context and could not account for other factors influencing depressive symptomatology. CONCLUSIONS: Network structures differed, suggesting gender-specific mechanisms in activating symptoms and depressive states. Addressing central symptoms evoking depressed moods with tailored interventions may serve to tackle depressive states in men and women.

PURPOSE: To assess the primary sex ratio (males-to-females at time of conception) in blastocysts from consanguine couples undergoing IVF/ICSI treatments and its correlation with chromosomal constitution. METHOD: A total of 5135 blastocysts were analyzed by preimplantation-genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) with next-generation sequencing (NGS) from November 2016 to December 2020. From those, a total of 1138 blastocysts were from consanguine couples (CS) and 3997 from non-consanguine couples (NCS). Only blastocysts presenting normal sex chromosome constitution with or without autosomal aneuploidies were included. Primary sex ratio (PSR) of biopsied blastocysts was compared between CS and NCS couples. RESULTS: Expanded blastocysts derived from CS had 47.7% XY versus 52.3% XX constitutions, presenting a PSR of 0.91. In NCS, 48.9% of expanded blastocysts were XY and 51.2% XX, with a less pronounced PSR of 0.95. When stratifying embryos by ploidy, euploid embryos from CS had the lowest PSR (0.87) with 46.6% XY versus 53.4% XX blastocysts (OR 0.89, 95% CI 0.70-1.14; NS), but it did not achieve statistical significance. The lower PSR seemed rather related to euploid embryos from first-degree cousins (PSR = 0.80 versus 0.98 in second-degree cousins, NS). Euploid embryos from NCS presented a PSR of 0.96, with 49.1% XY versus 50.9% XX blastocysts (OR 0.98, 95% CI 0.79-1.22; NS). Significant differences in prevalence of euploidy of specific chromosomes were encountered between CS and NCS. CONCLUSIONS: The primary sex ratio was generally similar in expanded blastocysts from consanguine and non-consanguine couples, with a slight decrease in primary sex ratio of euploid blastocysts from consanguine couples.

ABSTRACT

Marine community science presents an important route to gather valuable scientific information while also influencing local management and policy, thus contributing to marine conservation efforts. Because seahorses are cryptic but charismatic species, they are good candidates for engaging diverse people to help overcome the many gaps in biological knowledge. We have synthesized information contributed to the community science project iSeahorse from October 2013 to April 2022 for 35 of 46 known seahorse species. We then compared the obtained results with information in existing IUCN Red List assessments, executed from 2014 to 2017, to explore the potential of iSeahorse in expanding seahorse knowledge. Our results show updated geographic ranges for 7 seahorse species, new habitats described for 24 species, observations outside the previously recorded depth range for 14 species, and new information on sex ratio for 15 species and on pregnancy seasonality for 11 species. As one example of the power of iSeahorse, contributed observations on Coleman's pygmy seahorse (Hippocampus colemani) indicated that its geographic range is thousands of square kilometers larger, its habitat more diverse, and its depth range shallower than previously known. It is clear that iSeahorse is expanding knowledge on seahorses to a level that will help improve IUCN Red List assessments. The power of community science for marine conservation in general needs to be fully explored.

ABSTRACT

Fitness gain curves were introduced into the framework of the Shaw-Mohler equation, the foundation of sex allocation theory. I return to the Shaw-Mohler equation to consider how it embodies the rare-sex advantage underlying frequency-dependent selection on the sex ratio. The Shaw-Mohler formulation is based on the numbers of males and females randomly mating in a panmictic population. Gain curves are meant to describe reproductive success through male and female functions in hermaphrodites and have been inserted in place of male and female numbers in the Shaw-Mohler equation. In doing so, gain curves bypass consideration of the implicit mating process in the Shaw-Mohler argument and can lead to anomalies like unequal total male and female fitness in a population. If gain curves truly represent fitness gain, equality of total male and female fitness requires a constant sex allocation of equal resource investment into male and female functions. The blurring of input with fitness outcome has led to misinterpretation of what gain curves mean in reproductive ecology. They can describe a particular reproductive ecology, such as diminishing fitness returns on resource investment, but lack causal efficacy with respect to sex allocation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This paper starts from the unusual observation of the overrepresentation of females among adults in the cemetery of Bronze Age Shahr-i Sokhta (Seistan, Iran) and explores the post marital residence pattern. By integrating taphonomical (skeletal preservation), anthropological (sex ratio [SR], sexual dimorphism, stress indicators, age at death), archeological (long distance trade indicators, habitation floor area, social role of women), and ancient DNA (heterozygosity levels in X chromosomes) data we test the hypothesis of post marital matrilocality in the site. METHODS: We computed the SR (pelvis-based sex determination) in a random unpublished adult sample from the cemetery of Shahr-i Sokhta and in two samples previously published by other authors. We used comparative data on SR from: a large Supra Regional multi-chronological sample of sites, n = 47, with 8808 adult sexed individuals, from Southern Europe, Egypt, Middle East, Southern Russia; a Regional Bronze Age sample of sites (n = 10) from Bactria Margiana and Indus Valley with 1324 adult sexed individuals. We estimated the heterozygosity levels in X chromosomes compared with the rest of the autosomes on the assumption that in a matrilocal society females should show lower variability than men. RESULTS: Adult SR in a sample (n = 549) from Shahr-i Sokhta is 70.5, the overrepresentation of females is shared with Regional Bronze Age sites from Bactria Margiana (SR = 72.09) and Indus Valley (SR = 67.54). On the contrary, in a larger Supra Regional multi-chronological sample of sites, mean SR ranges between 112.7 (Bronze Age) and 163.1 (Middle Ages). Taphonomical and anthropological indicators do not explain the overrepresentation of female skeletons. Archeological indicators suggest a high social status of women and that the society was devoted to long range trade activities. heterozygosity levels in X chromosomes are in agreement with a matrilocal society. CONCLUSIONS: Indicators suggest that Bronze Age Shahr-ì Sokhta was a matrilocal society and that long distance trade was an important economic factor producing an overrepresentation of adult female skeletons in the cemetery.

ABSTRACT

Background: The population structure and breeding biology of the Xanthid crab, Leptodius exaratus (H. Milne Edwards, 1834), on the rocky intertidal region of Shivrajpur in Saurashtra coast, Gujarat state, were examined. Method: From March 2021 to February 2022, monthly sampling was conducted during low tide using catch per unit effort in the 500 m2 area. The sampled specimens were categorised into male, non-ovigerous female or ovigerous female. In order to estimate fecundity, the morphology of the crab specimens (carapace width and body weight) as well as the size of eggs, number of eggs and weight of egg mass were recorded. Results: A total of 1,215 individuals were sampled of which 558 individuals were males and 657 individuals were females. The size (carapace width) of males ranges from 5.15 to 29.98 mm, while females ranges from 5.26 to 28.63 mm which shows that the average size of male and female individuals did not differ significantly. The overall as well as monthly sex ratio was skewed towards males with a bimodal distribution while unimodal in females. The population breeds year-round, which was indicated by the occurrence of ovigerous females throughout the year. However, the maximum percentage occurrence of ovigerous females was observed from December to April which indicates the peak breeding season. The size of eggs, number of eggs and weight of egg mass were shown to positively correlate with the morphology of ovigerous females (carapace width and wet weight).

ABSTRACT

Meiotic drivers that act during spermatogenesis derive a transmission advantage by disabling sperm that do not carry the driver, often leading to substantially reduced overall sperm number and function. A new study by Bates et al. shows no sperm deficit for a driver in a stalk-eyed fly, in contrast to a related species. This observed sperm compensation is possibly due to secondary testes-expanding mutations linked to the driving genomic locus.

ABSTRACT

Although random meiosis should prevent the facultative adjustment of offspring sex ratio, theory predicts that females should produce more of the sex with the higher reproductive value. We reported a case of offspring sex ratio manipulation in grass wrens Cistothorus platensis. Males in better body condition would have higher reproductive value than females due to the potential for social polygyny and extra-pair fertilizations. On the other hand, local demography influences reproductive strategies in grass wrens as male abundance affects both social polygyny and extra-pair paternity frequencies. We evaluated whether females bias their brood sex ratio in response to adult sex ratio and nestling body condition (a proxy for female's prospects of producing high-quality males). Females raised more male offspring when males were less abundant in the population (female-biased adult sex ratio). However, we found no relationship between nestling body condition and brood sex ratio, suggesting that females did not bias the brood sex ratio towards males when able to raise nestlings in better body condition. Taken together, our results provide the first suggestive evidence that female birds can manipulate their offspring sex ratio in response to the adult sex ratio.

ABSTRACT

Throughout the animal kingdom, there are striking differences in the propensity of one sex or the other to become infected. However, precisely when we should expect males or females to be the sicker sex remains unclear. A major barrier to answering this question is that very few studies have considered how the susceptibility of males and females changes across the full range of pathogen doses encountered in nature. Without quantifying this 'dose-susceptibility' relationship, we have likely underestimated the scope for sex differences to arise. Here, we use the Daphnia magnia-Pasteuria ramosa system to reveal that sex differences in susceptibility are entirely dose-dependent, with pathogens having a higher probability of successfully establishing an infection in mature males at low doses, but mature females at high doses. The scope for male-female differences to emerge is therefore much greater than previously appreciated-extending to sex differences in the upper limits to infection success, per-propagule infectivity risks and density-dependent pathogen behaviour. Applying this expanded scope across the animal kingdom will help us understand when and why a sicker sex emerges, and the implications for diseases in nature-where sex ratios, age structure and pathogen densities vary drastically.
