ABSTRACT

Background: Less than one-quarter of US children meet physical activity (PA) guidelines. Understanding the context in which PA occurs and how these contexts may play a role in meeting PA guidelines is an essential step toward developing effective behavioral interventions. The purpose of this study was to examine associations between PA context (sports participation, participation in other organized physical activities, active travel to school, and outdoor play) and the number of days children met PA guidelines in a representative sample of children living in Texas. Methods: We analyzed cross-sectional data from a statewide sample of fourth-grade children in Texas who completed the 2019-2020 Texas School Physical Activity and Nutrition (Texas SPAN) survey. The Texas SPAN survey was designed to monitor the statewide prevalence of overweight/obesity among school children and assess habitual self-reported obesity-related behaviors, including diet and PA. Weighted Poisson regression models were employed to examine the associations between PA contexts (sports participation, participation in other organized physical activities, active travel to school, and outdoor play) and the number of days children met PA guidelines, adjusting for sex, race/ethnicity, overweight/obesity, urban-rural status, and economic disadvantage. Results: A total of 16.7% of fourth-grade children met physical activity guidelines every day during the week (mean age = 9.4 ± 0.6 years; female = 48.7, 51.8% Hispanic, mean days meeting PA guideline = 3.6 ± 2.3 days). One in ten (11.2%) children did not meet daily PA guidelines on any day of the week, and 72.1% met them between 1 and 6 days. Participating in sports (b = 0.22, 95%CI:0.14, 0.30), any other organized physical activities (b=0.13, 95%CI:0.017, 0.19), and playing outdoors 1-3 days (b = 0.25, 95%CI:0.04, 0.46) and 4-7 days in the past week (b = 0.77, 95%CI:0.57, 0.97) was significantly and positively associated with the number of days children met PA guidelines. Conclusion: Participating in sports, participating in other organized physical activities, and playing outdoors may beneficially influence the number of days children meet PA guidelines. PA programs should consider these contextual factors and investigate how to promote organized activities and outdoor play effectively and appropriately among children.

ABSTRACT

HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATION FOR 2024 OLYMPICS AND PARALYMPICS GAMES. The 2024 olympic and paralympic Games (JOP 2024) constitute the largest global festive event. While this major international gathering is primarily synonymous with celebrations, health security represents a major challenge for the French healthcare system in a highly tense national and international context. The health security of the JOP 2024 relies on close collaboration between the medical service of the organizer Paris 2024, responsible for care at the Olympic sites, and state services (SAMU, Law Enforcement, Firefighters) providing support in the event of serious health incidents or exceptional health situations (SSE). The projected impact on our healthcare structures (excluding SSE) appears moderate, as a 5% increase in hospital activity and approximately 150 additional daily emergencies are expected during the Olympic period compared to a normal summer season. In the event of a major incident resulting in a large number of casualties, state services will take over the governance of relief efforts by activating the ORSEC-NOVI and ORSAN-AMAVI plans for health response. The preparation of this health coverage involves an unprecedented mobilization of all healthcare stakeholders and is manifested by the organization of exercises at a very brisk pace.


ORGANISATION DU SYSTÈME DE SOINS POUR LES JEUX OLYMPIQUES ET PARALYMPIQUES 2024. Les Jeux olympiques et paralympiques 2024 (JOP 2024) constituent le plus important événement festif mondial. Si ce grand rassemblement international se veut avant tout synonyme de fête, la sécurité sanitaire représente un enjeu majeur pour le système de soins français, dans un contexte national et international en tension majeure. La sécurité sanitaire des JOP 2024 relève d'une étroite collaboration entre le service médical de l'organisateur Paris 2024, responsable des soins sur les sites olympiques, et les services de l'État (Samu, forces de l'ordre, sapeurs-pompiers) venant en soutien en cas d'événements sanitaires graves ou en cas de situation sanitaire exceptionnelle. La prévision de l'impact sur les structures sanitaires (en dehors de situation sanitaire exceptionnelle) semble modérée, puisque l'on attend une augmentation de 5 % de l'activité hospitalière et environ 150 urgences journalières de plus pendant la période olympique par rapport à une saison estivale normale. En cas d'événement majeur générant un grand nombre de victimes, les services de l'État prendront la gouvernance des secours par le déclenchement des plans ORSECNOVI et ORSAN-AMAVI pour la valence sanitaire. La préparation de cette couverture sanitaire fait appel à une mobilisation sans précédent de tous les acteurs de santé et se concrétise par l'organisation d'exercices à un r ythme très soutenu.

OBJECTIVE: Aim: Dynamic comparison of the lower limbs length, depending on the type of sport, followed by the construction of a mathematical model for predicting sports abilities. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and Methods: The comparison of the lower limbs length in dynamics was carried out on 132 students of higher education institutions of Bukovyna. While the primary study was carried out during September-October 2021, next study of these same students was conducted in September-October 2022. The main group consists of 92 (69.7%) students, the control group - 40 (30.30%) students aged 16 to 18 years. All students underwent an anthropometric study (determination of the length of the lower limbs) according to the method of P.P. Shaparenka. The comparesment of anthropometric parameters in the main group depending on the type of sport used the Kruskel-Wallis test (non-parametric analysis of variance) in order to identify a reliable difference in the average indicators of the respondents depending on the type of sport (the median of the distribution was considered as a measure of central tendency). In order to establish which pairs of age groups had a statistical difference in the medians, the Conover-Iman test was used. A paired t-test (t-test of paired samples) was performed to compare the length of the respondents' lower limbs during the first measurement and again one year later. Statistical analysis of the obtained data was performed using the licensed RStudio program. RESULTS: Results: The distribution of the length of the right lower limb of the respondents of the main group by measurement shows that the average value of the length of the right lower limb has changed: a significant difference in the length of the right lower limb was found between the first (M = 88.812, SD = 5.287) and the second (M = 89.377, SD = 5.347) measurements; t (68) = -5.223, p < 0.001. The distribution of the length of the left lower limb shows that the average value of the length of the left lower limb has changed also: a significant difference in the length of the left lower limb was found between the first (M = 88.667, SD = 5.266) and the second (M = 89.435, SD = 5.309) measurements; t (68) = -8.289, p < 0.001. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: In order to dynamically compare the length of the lower limbs for comprehensive control and selection of promising students in football, volleyball, handball and basketball, a mathematical model was derived for predicting the length of the lower limbs, in corresponding sports: right lower limb y = 0.506 x and left y = 0.507x, where y - is the length of the left lower limb, x - is the height. The coefficient of determination is 99.8%. A significant predictor for the length of both lower limbs is the height.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to analyze the association between sports participation in childhood and adolescence and the practice of physical activity at different intensities in adulthood, and to verify if some sports participation characteristics such as number of sports; type of sport (individual, collective or a combination of both) and total estimated sports participation time are associated with the different physical activity intensities in adulthood. DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study. METHODS: This study included 129 young adults of both sexes aged 18-25 years. Sports participation in childhood (7-10 years) and adolescence (11-17 years) was retrospectively estimated through specific questionnaire. Light, moderate, vigorous and moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity was objectively estimated by accelerometers. To verify the association between SP in childhood and adolescence and BP intensities in adults, multiple linear regression was adopted, with 5% significance. RESULTS: Analyses showed that, in females, sports participation in childhood (ß = 0.315; R2 = 0.14; P = 0.020) and persistence in sports participation (ß = 0.364; R2 = 0.18; P = 0.007) were positive predictors of vigorous physical activity in adulthood. In addition, the comparison according to the specificities of the sport practice, indicated that participation in two or more sports in childhood, one sport and collective sports in adolescence and at least one year of sports participation throughout childhood and adolescence were associated with longer time in vigorous physical activity intensity and MVPA (minutes/day) in adult females (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It could be concluded that sports participation indicators in childhood and adolescence were considered predictors of vigorous physical activity in adult females. In addition, number of sports, type of sport and practice time in childhood and adolescence seem to predict vigorous and moderate to vigorous levels of physical activity for adult females.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Effectively managing their athletic and academic projects is a major challenge for student-athletes. The salience of the identity they develop in each of these contexts can affect their well-being and is therefore an important variable to consider. Examining these mechanisms in countries and student-athlete support systems other than the United States is also important. AIM: This study aims to both translate and evaluate the psychometric properties of a French version of the Academic and Athletic Identity Scale, the AAIS-FR, and to examine the additive and interactive relationships of the two identities with sport burnout and engagement. METHODS: Participants were 359 French student-athletes (50.42% female) who were competing at various levels (ranging from regional to international). RESULTS: Results from analyses using a slightly modified version of the original scale provided evidence of construct (i.e., factor structure) and concurrent (i.e., expected relationships between both identities and several correlates identified in previous work) validity, as well as reliability (i.e., internal consistency) and invariance across gender and sport competition levels of the AAIS-FR. In addition, regression analyses revealed a favourable relationship between athletic identity and sport well-being (i.e., positive with engagement and negative with burnout), no relationship between academic identity and sport well-being, and no interaction between the two identities. CONCLUSION: While further research is needed to provide additional evidence for the validity of the AAIS-FR, researchers can still use this tool to measure the salience of the two identities of French-speaking student-athletes.

ABSTRACT

This article mainly introduces the development history and current situation of sports medicine in China, and deeply analyzes the problems that have emerged during the current development process, and proposes corresponding solutions. Based on this, the article proposes five key directions for the development of sports medicine, which are: developing arthroscopic minimally invasive techniques, ensuring the guarantee work for competitive sports, attaching great importance to the development of sports rehabilitation, vigorously carrying out exercise prescription and exercise assessment work, and emphasizing the training and education of sports medicine professionals. Finally, the article looks forward to the future development of sports medicine from three aspects: popularizing and expanding the influence of sports medicine through popular science promotion, improving the quality and safety of sports through health management and disease prevention, and achieving precise diagnosis and treatment through scientific research and innovation. It is hoped that this article will provide reference for the development of sports medicine in China.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The development of the digital economy constitutes a key component of China's endeavors to advance towards "Digital China." The sports industry functions as a new catalyst for high-quality economic growth. This study systematically evaluated the integration between these two sectors. METHODS: First, we conducted two levels of grey relational analysis to assess their integration between 2016 and 2021. Second, we conducted a VAR analysis to determine whether their integration between 2009 and 2021 represents a causal relationship. RESULTS: At the macro level, the grey relational analysis reveals that the sports industry (grade = 0.770) ranked second among China's eight key economic sectors in terms of digital economy integration. At the meso level, a wide variation (ranging from 0.606 to 0.789) existed in the grade of integration between the digital economy and the sub-sectors of the sports industry. According to the VAR model, the digital economy does not Granger cause (p = 0.344) the growth of the sports industry. CONCLUSIONS: This study yielded two added values to the existing literature: First, there exists a sectoral imbalance in the digitization process; second, the explosive growth of the sports industry was not primarily caused by the digital economy. Accordingly, the "sports + digital" complex is still in the first wave of technological integration. We propose three policy recommendations, namely, sectoral synergistic development, overtaking via esports IP, and new economy and new regulation. Collectively, these findings provide updated insights for the digital transformation towards "building a leading sports nation" and "Digital China."

Agreement between maximal lactate steady state and critical power in different sports: A systematic review and Bayesian's meta-regression. J Strength Cond Res 38(6): e320-e339, 2024-This study aimed to systematically review the literature and perform a meta-regression to determine the level of agreement between maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) and critical power (CP). Considered eligible to include were peer-reviewed and "gray literature" studies in English, Spanish, and Portuguese languages in cyclical exercises. The last search was made on March 24, 2022, on PubMed, ScienceDirect, SciELO, and Google Scholar. The study's quality was evaluated using 4 criteria adapted from the COSMIN tool. The level of agreement was examined by 2 separate meta-regressions modeled under Bayesian's methods, the first for the mean differences and the second for the SD of differences. The searches yielded 455 studies, of which 36 studies were included. Quality scale revealed detailed methods and small samples used and that some studies lacked inclusion/exclusion criteria reporting. For MLSS and CP comparison, likely (i.e., coefficients with high probabilities) covariates that change the mean difference were the MLSS time frame and delta criteria of blood lactate concentration, MLSS number and duration of pauses, CP longest predictive trial duration, CP type of predictive trials, CP model fitting parameters, and exercise modality. Covariates for SD of the differences were the subject's maximal oxygen uptake, CP's longest predictive trial duration, and exercise modality. Traditional MLSS protocol and CP from 2- to 15-minute trials do not reflect equivalent exercise intensity levels; the proximity between MLSS and CP measures can differ depending on test design, and both MLSS and CP have inherent limitations. Therefore, comparisons between them should always consider these aspects.

ABSTRACT

Sports activities can lead to exercise-related skin complaints. These include different symptoms (e.g. infections, mechanical injuries, contact dermatitis). Previous studies mostly focused only on skin infections and injuries in competitive athletes. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and characteristics of exercise-related skin complaints among sports students and to what extent these complaints influence physical fitness. We performed a self-administered online survey among 259 actively exercising sports students from two German universities. Descriptive analyses were conducted. The most common complaints were blistering (57.3%), dryness (56.7%), redness (44.7%), and chafing (34.0%). Hands and feet (78.0% each) were most frequently affected. Participants whose skin was particularly stressed (47.5%) had higher training duration (7.6 h/week, 95%-CI 6.8-8.3 h) than those without complaints (5.1 h/week, 95%-CI 5.5-6.7 h, p = 0.003). The students reported reduced intensity (34.7%) and frequency (22.7%) of training due to their skin complaints. A reduction in performance was reported by 32.0% of the students. Actively exercising sports students considered an intact skin as essential for their physical fitness. Reported impairments of the skin led to a reduced intensity and frequency of training. To enhance the awareness of exercise-related skin complaints, further research is necessary.

ABSTRACT

With a rapidly growing sports industry worldwide, one may argue that sports industry agglomeration can play a crucial role in the economy of the sports industry. In particularly, the coupling linkage between sports industry agglomeration and economic resilience can be leveraged to promote both economic quality and efficiency. Based on data on three provinces and one city in the Yangtze River Delta region during the 2011-2020 period, this study uses the entropy-weighted TOPSIS method, coupling coordination degree model, and relative development models to explore the coupling coordination relationship between sports industry agglomeration and economic resilience in this region. The results show that: (1) Sports industry agglomeration shows an overall increasing albeit fluctuating trend with inter-provincial differences. (2) Economic resilience has steadily increased, while the economic resilience kernel density curve generally shows a "dual peaks" trend. (3) The coupling coordination between sports industry agglomeration and economic resilience remains in a fluctuating, albeit coordinated state. These findings are relevant for the integration and high-quality development of the sports industry in the Yangtze River Delta region.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between components of physical activity and spatiotemporal gait parameters in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with 134 independent community-dwelling older adults. A questionnaire was applied to obtain information related to the components of physical activity (frequency, duration, modality, and history of physical activity in the life course) and the GAITRite System was used to quantify gait parameters. Three MANOVA models adjusted for potential confounders were conducted to identify associations between components of physical activity (predictors) and gait performance (outcome). RESULTS: Higher weekly frequency but not daily hours of physical activity and sports practice (tennis, boxing, football, volleyball, and tai chi) were significantly associated with better gait performance, specifically gait speed and stride length. CONCLUSION: Understanding the most effective components of physical activity to maintain functional capacity and independence in community-dwelling older adults, allowing for active aging, is essential for formulating more effective strategies.

ABSTRACT

Association between genomic variants and athletic performance has seen a high degree of controversy, as there is often conflicting data as far as the association of genomic variants with endurance, speed and strength is concerned. Here, findings from a thorough meta-analysis from 4228 articles exploring the association of genomic variants with athletic performance in power and endurance sports are summarized, aiming to confirm or overrule the association of genetic variants with athletic performance of all types. From the 4228 articles, only 107 were eligible for further analysis, including 37 different genes. From these, there were 21 articles for the ACE gene, 29 articles for the ACTN3 gene and 8 articles for both the ACE and ACTN3 genes, including 54,382 subjects in total, from which 11,501 were endurance and power athletes and 42,881 control subjects. These data show that there is no statistically significant association between genomic variants and athletic performance either for endurance or power sports, underlying the fact that it is highly risky and even unethical to make such genetic testing services for athletic performance available to the general public. Overall, a strict regulatory monitoring should be exercised by health and other legislative authorities to protect the public from such services from an emerging discipline that still lacks the necessary scientific evidence and subsequent regulatory approval.

ABSTRACT

This study employed Rasch analyses to validate a novel measure of sport experience: the Sport Experience Measure: Children and Youth (SEM:CY). Analyses were applied to self-reported data of n = 503 young people (age 9-18 years, M = 12.91, 50% female) in Canada who were engaging in sport during the previous 12 months. The revised measure, consisting of 24 items on a 3-point response scale, demonstrated good fit statistics (e.g., item fit residual: M = -0.50, SD = 0.94 and person fit residual: M = -0.62, SD = 2.33), an ability to reliably discriminate between levels of sport experience, and an absence of differential item functioning for various groups (males and females, older and younger individuals, solo and team sports, and those playing at various competitive levels, including recreation). The SEM:CY is a succinct tool that can serve as a valuable means to gauge the quality of an individual's sport experience, which can facilitate positive youth development and sustain participation across the life span.

ABSTRACT

Rotational jumps are crucial techniques in sports competitions. Estimating ground reaction forces (GRFs), a constituting component of jumps, through a biomechanical model-based approach allows for analysis, even in environments where force plates or machine learning training data would be impossible. In this study, rotational jump movements involving twists on land were measured using inertial measurement units (IMUs), and GRFs and body loads were estimated using a 3D forward dynamics model. Our forward dynamics and optimization calculation-based estimation method generated and optimized body movements using cost functions defined by motion measurements and internal body loads. To reduce the influence of dynamic acceleration in the optimization calculation, we estimated the 3D orientation using sensor fusion, comprising acceleration and angular velocity data from IMUs and an extended Kalman filter. As a result, by generating cost function-based movements, we could calculate biomechanically valid GRFs while following the measured movements, even if not all joints were covered by IMUs. The estimation approach we developed in this study allows for measurement condition- or training data-independent 3D motion analysis.

Motion capture technology plays a crucial role in optimizing athletes' skills, techniques, and strategies by providing detailed feedback on motion data. This article presents a comprehensive survey aimed at guiding researchers in selecting the most suitable motion capture technology for sports science investigations. By comparing and analyzing the characters and applications of different motion capture technologies in sports scenarios, it is observed that cinematography motion capture technology remains the gold standard in biomechanical analysis and continues to dominate sports research applications. Wearable sensor-based motion capture technology has gained significant traction in specialized areas such as winter sports, owing to its reliable system performance. Computer vision-based motion capture technology has made significant advancements in recognition accuracy and system reliability, enabling its application in various sports scenarios, from single-person technique analysis to multi-person tactical analysis. Moreover, the emerging field of multimodal motion capture technology, which harmonizes data from various sources with the integration of artificial intelligence, has proven to be a robust research method for complex scenarios. A comprehensive review of the literature from the past 10 years underscores the increasing significance of motion capture technology in sports, with a notable shift from laboratory research to practical training applications on sports fields. Future developments in this field should prioritize research and technological advancements that cater to practical sports scenarios, addressing challenges such as occlusion, outdoor capture, and real-time feedback.
