ABSTRACT

We tested the antibacterial properties of a mix of minerals consisting mainly of sericite, talc, and halloysite from Korea. The preparation showed clear growth inhibition of the gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and the gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus, S. epidermidis, and Bacillus cereus, as well as the anaerobic bacterium Propionibacterium acnes. These results indicate that this preparation, made from ore minerals indigenous to Korea, could be used to develop new antibacterial reagents.

ABSTRACT

Experiment talc retinopathy was produced in four adult rhesus monkeys by biweekly intravenous injections of talc for 31/2 to ten months and was studied by retinal vascular flat preparations and by light microscopy. Talc particles were lodged in the walls of the precapillary arterioles and capillaries, producing focal occlusion of retinal and choroidal capillaries. The pericyte-endothelial cell ratio was 1:0.77 in the posterior pole and 1:0.53 in the retinal periphery. The horseradish peroxidase study showed leakage of tracer from the retinal vasculature into the extracellular interstitial space, but the barrier of the retinal pigment epithelium was intact. Microinfarcts produced small cystoid spaces in the outer plexiform layer, inner nuclear layer, and ganglion cell layer of the macula. Cytoid bodies and macrophages were scattered in the retina. No retinal or vitreal neovascularization was observed.

ABSTRACT

The unequivocal identification of mineral impurities in talc requires definitive analytical techniques due to the very similar structure of many naturally occurring silicates and the small quantities of associated minerals frequently found. The instrumental methods and techniques extant for this purpose are reviewed. Light microscopy, x-ray diffractometry, and differential thermal analysis have been found to be particularly useful, complementary, and practical for both exploratory and routine determinations of mineral impurities in the talc matrix. When necessary, transmission electron microscopy is recommended for the analysis of mineral components present at sub-trace levels.

ABSTRACT

Particles of talc have been identified on the route surface of surgeons' rubber gloves and in sections of tissue classified as 'starch' or 'foreign body' granulomas. This analytical study indicates that under certain circumstances these granulomas could have been caused by talc contamination.
