ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: Removable partial dentures (RPDs) remain a mainstay of prosthodontic care for partially dentate patients. Appropriately designed, they can restore masticatory efficiency, improve aesthetics and speech, and help secure overall oral health. However, challenges remain in providing such treatments, including maintaining adequate plaque control, achieving adequate retention, and facilitating patient tolerance. The aim of this paper is to review the successful provision of RPDs. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Removable partial dentures are a successful form of treatment for replacing missing teeth, and can be successfully provided with appropriate design and fabrication concepts in mind.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To discover the quality of written instructions from dentists to dental technicians and the nature of non-compliant prescriptions. METHOD: An audit of laboratory prescription compliance was conducted within an NHS Trust Dental Teaching Hospital to determine the level of communication between dentists and dental technicians. One hundred and fifty prescriptions were audited from dental undergraduates and qualified dentists throughout the different departments. RESULTS: A total of two-thirds of prescriptions were considered non-compliant and failed to meet relevant ethical and legal guidelines. This problem was seen throughout all departments and at all professional levels. CONCLUSION: A breakdown in communication between dentists and technicians through the use of prescriptions is evident even within a close working environment.

ABSTRACT

A complex human tissue harbors stem cells that are responsible for its maintenance or repair. These stem cells have been isolated also from dental tissues such as the periodontal ligament, dental papilla or dental follicle and they may offer novel applications in dentistry. This following review summarizes patents about dental stem cells for dental tissue engineering and considers their value for regenerative dentistry.

ABSTRACT

With the constant introduction and marketing of new dental technologies, dentists sometimes have difficulty deciding whether a new technology will be beneficial to their patients. At the same time, these clinicians are professionally and legally obligated to inform their patients about all appropriate therapeutic alternatives. In this second article of a 2-part series, we review these obligations, as well as provide information about where dentists can find the necessary scientific evidence on which to base an informed decision.

ABSTRACT

The Dental Act 1988 included requirements for the registration of clinical dental technicians, a new category of dental health worker. Despite the Act containing provision for a course of training in clinical dental technology, 11 years elapsed before the first candidates would graduate in this discipline. This paper describes the development and implementation of the new Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology, PGDipCDTech(Otago). Diplomates of the inaugural course in 1999 were the first students, other than students of dentistry, to obtain a clinical qualification from the School of Dentistry. Overall the course was very successful, but the provisions of the Dental Act inhibit flexible approaches to the teaching of clinical dental technology.

ABSTRACT

Board certification in any health care-related area is one mechanism that promotes high standards of practice and assures public confidence. Certification eligibility and requirements for dental technicians and laboratories are reviewed. Issues affecting the future of dental technology are discussed.
