ABSTRACT

When radioisotopes are injected to human body, instantly free radicals are generated due to the interaction of ionizing radiation with water and fluids present in the body. The vehicle carrying radionuclides into human body should therefore be designed in a way which could also eliminate or reduce such possibilities. For the first time we have used free radical scavenger hesperidin, a polyphenolic compound having a benzo-γ-pyrone with a benzene ring moiety for extraction of no-carrier added (NCA) 200,203Pb and 200,201,202Tl. We have modified CA beads by incorporation of a polyphenol (hesperidin) (CA-Hes). This tailor made beads were characterized and tested for their efficacy towards extraction of no-carrier-added lead and thallium radioisotopes from 40MeV α particle irradiated Hg2Cl2 target.

ABSTRACT

Cross-sections of proton induced nuclear reactions on natural thallium have been studied for investigation of the production of the medical important (201)Tl diagnostic radioisotope. The excitation functions of (204m)Pb, (203)Pb, (202m)Pb, (201)Pb, (200)Pb, (199)Pb, (202)Tl (direct, cumulative), (201)Tl (direct, cumulative), (200)Tl(direct), and (203)Hg were measured up to 42MeV proton energy by stacked foil technique and activation method. The experimental data were compared with the critically analyzed experimental data in the literature, with the IAEA recommended data and with the results of model calculations by using the ALICE-IPPE, EMPIRE-II and TALYS codes.

ABSTRACT

For the first time, (nat)Hg2Cl2 target has been used to produce no-carrier-added-NCA (197,198,198m,199,200,201)Tl radionuclides using (nat)Hg(p,xn) reaction. Liquid-liquid extraction technique was employed in order to separate radiothallium from the bulk mercury matrix using liquid anion exchanger trioctylamine (TOA) dissolved in cyclohexane. In order to verify the presence of stable Hg in Tl fraction, the entire process was repeated with stable salts of Hg and Tl and the extent of separation was examined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). High separation factors were observed both by radiometric and ICP-OES technique when 0.1 M HNO³ and 0.1M TOA were used as aqueous and organic phase, respectively. The Hg contamination was less than 0.3 ppm in the aqueous phase containing Tl after three times of extraction at the optimal condition.
