ABSTRACT

Our experience in surgical treatment of thyroid pathology summarizes the results of 4215 cases of nodular, diffuse, toxic and mixed goiter. In only 4 cases the hydatid cysts of thyroid gland were diagnosed. The lack of clinical data, laboratory and instrumental tests are the main reasons of impossibility of correct preoperative diagnose of such a rare form of the disease. The absence of diagnostic criteria of other thyroid pathology should prompt a surgeon to think about a possibility of a thyroid hydatid cyst.

ABSTRACT

Hydatid cysts may be found in almost any part of the body, but most often they are found in the liver and lungs. Other organs that are occasionally affected include the brain, muscle, kidney, heart, pancreas, and adrenal and thyroid glands. We report a case of hydatid cyst of the adrenal gland.

ABSTRACT

A 21-year-old patient underwent surgery in 1987 for hydatid cyst of segment VIII of the liver. Six years later, the patient developed a cold thyroid nodule. During the thyroid operation, needle aspiration and cytology study confirmed the diagnosis of hydatid cyst. Resection of the prominent dome was performed. In 1996, the patient developed cervical recurrence. Pericytectomy was attempted and during the procedure a wound of the subclavian artery required sternoclavicular disarticulation. Hydatid cyst of the thyroid gland is rare, but should be considered in patients living in endemic zones who develop an anterior neck tumor. Cystectomy, isthmolobectomy or sub-total thyroidectomy may be indicated. Resection of the prominent dome may be required in the event of recurrence.

ABSTRACT

The hydatid cyst tend to form in the liver or lung but may be found in any organ of the body, including brain, heart, and bones. Thyroid gland involvement is rather rare. Cyst leakage or rupture may even associated with severe allergic reaction to parasite antigens, and may cause anaphylactoid reactions. Herein we reported an additional case of hydatid cyst of the thyroid gland that occurred in a 9-year-old boy who admitted with a painless and cystic thyroid mass. Hemithyroidectomy was performed, and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of hydatid cyst. Diagnosis of that rare clinical entity is unlikely prior to surgical excision and histopathologic examination. Despite this fact, hydatid disease of the thyroid should be remembered in the differential diagnosis of the cystic thyroid masses, and a high index of suspicion is required.

ABSTRACT

In humans, cystic echinococcosis is one of the most serious helminthic diseases worldwide. The larval stages (cysts) of Echinococcus granulosus are mainly located in the liver and the lung. Other locations of infection are rare, which may occasionally hinder its diagnosis. A 14-year-old girl from Kosovo presented with a cystic lesion in the left thyroid lobe of 4 years duration. Although two percutaneous punctures had been performed, she developed a recurrence and therefore had to undergo thyroid surgery. The results of the histopathologic examination revealed a hydatid cyst, and consequently, the patient received a long-term course of medication, namely, albendazole. Imaging of the cranium and chest were normal. A computed tomography of the abdomen detected a further cyst in the liver which did not show the typical signs of cystic echinococcosis. An echinococcus cyst in the thyroid gland is rare, especially in children. In a review of the literature published since 1965, only 12 children have been reported. Although by definition percutaneous drainage is contraindicated to avoid the spread of protoscolices, it is documented in eleven patients without complications. Surgical extirpation is mandatory. Chemotherapy with benzomidazole derivatives is necessary to avoid recurrence.

ABSTRACT

Echinococcosis, although eradicated in many countries, is still widespread in communities in which agriculture is dominant, and cystic hydatidosis is a significant public health problem in regions where echinococcosis is endemic. Hydatid cysts may be found in almost any part of the body, but most often in the liver and lungs. Other organs affected occasionally include the brain, muscle, kidney, bone, heart and pancreas. This report documents a rare case with a cystic nodule in the thyroid detected by ultrasonography. The patient was a 40-year-old woman with an euthyroid multinodular goitre. Ultrasonography revealed a cystic nodule, and the ultrasonic appearance of the cyst liquid showed multiple echoes, suggesting that the nodule could be a hydatid cyst. Bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy was performed. Postoperative examination of the nodule showed it to be a solitary primary thyroid hydatid cyst.

ABSTRACT

Most hydatid cysts are found in the liver or lungs but occurrence in other locations is possible. The purpose of this report is to describe three cases involving cysts locate in the ovary, joint, and thyroid. Clinical findings associated with these uncommon locations were poorly specific and diagnosis required histological examination after surgical exploration. Imaging and serology were useful to differentiate hydatid cyst from benign or malignant tumor disease but often failed to achieve definitive differential diagnosis. Thorough investigation is necessary to rule out more common locations in the liver or lung. Continued surveillance is needed for early detection of recurrence. Preventive campaigns are necessary in endemic areas, such as Morocco.

ABSTRACT

A 54-year-old woman presented with an expansive mass in the anterior cervical region (front of the neck) with abscess. Laboratory tests and thyroid profile proved normal. Surgical exploration revealed a hydatid cyst in the left lobe of the thyroid gland with parasitic metastasis of the left lateral cervical lymph node chain. Postoperative examination of the nodule showed it to be a solitary primary thyroid hydatid cyst.

ABSTRACT

Neck located hydatid cysts are of rare occurrence. We report two patients with such condition. A 66 years old male with a slowly progressive painless 4 cm nodule located in the right thyroid. It did not concentrate 131I and a fine needle aspiration cytology was informed as an acute thyroiditis. A 5 years old boy presented with a 5 cm painless right submaxillary cyst. Ultrasound examination showed that it was unilocular, and fine needle aspiration biopsy disclosed unspecific findings. In both cases surgical findings and the pathological study showed hydatid cysts. Both patients had normal chest x ray and abdominal ultrasound examinations. They had an uneventful postoperative evolution. Echinococcosis must be considered in the differential diagnosis of cervical cysts in endemic area.
