ABSTRACT

The study objective is to examine epidemiological and microbiological aspects of aerobic vaginitis in female patients admitted to University Hospital of Campania "L. Vanvitelli" over five years. The most represented strains were E. coli (n = 153), Citrobacter spp. increasing from 2020, E. faecalis (n = 149), S. haemolitycus (n = 61), and Candida albicans (n = 87). The susceptibility patterns of a selection of gram-negative and gram-positive representative bacterial isolates were examined. Carbapenems, aminoglycosides, and fosfomycin were most effective against gram-negative bacteria, whereas vancomycin, daptomycin, and linezolid exhibited greater efficacy against gram-positive bacteria. None of the E. coli and Citrobacter spp. isolates produced extended-spectrum beta-lactamases, and the S. haemolyticus strains were methicillin-resistant. In gram-positive isolates, gentamicin susceptibility increased in 2020 and 2021 compared to clindamycin; erythromycin showed high resistance rates in 2020. Our findings indicate that integrating proper microbiological cultures into clinical practice could improve the management of aerobic vaginitis. Moreover, they highlight the necessity of establishing a nationwide surveillance guideline to mitigate antimicrobial resistance. Improvement actions in antimicrobial diagnostic stewardship must be considered when seeking the appropriate diagnosis and treatment for aerobic vaginitis.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the etiology of cervico-vaginal infections by cytobacteriology and the efficacy of qPCR for the diagnosis of sensitive strains such as Streptococcus agalactiae, Borrelia crocidurae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Treponema pallidum. Methodology: This prospective cross-sectional study was performed between January and September 2021 in 346 women who were examined for cervico-vaginal infection at the Hôpital Principal de Dakar (HPD). Cytobacteriological (direct examination, agar culture) and molecular analyses were performed. Results: Vaginal flora imbalances predominated, with a rate of 72.3%. The proportion of type IV vaginal flora was 46.5%. Of the 199 germs isolated, Candida albicans (25.1%), Ureaplasma urealyticum (17.6%), S. agalactiae (7.8%), Gardnerella vaginalis (6.6%) and nonalbicans Candida (5.5%) were the main pathogens responsible for cervico-vaginal infections in patients. Among women tested for mycoplasma, U. urealyticum was identified in 43.3% of patients. Among those tested for C. trachomatis, the proportion of infected women was low (4%). The prevalence of C. albicans was higher in pregnant women (38.3%) than in nonpregnant women (19.2%). S. agalactiae strains showed high resistance to certain beta-lactam antibiotics (pristinamycin 100%, gentamycin 100%, ampicillin 92.5% and cefalotin 85.2%) and to a glycopeptide antibiotic (vancomycin 100%). The Staphylococcus aureus strain had good sensitivity to antibiotics except gentamycin (100%) and kanamycin (100%). The enterobacteria tested were all sensitive to phenicols, carbapenems, cephalosporins and aminoglycosides. However, E. coli showed high resistance to tetracycline. The different methods showed low prevalences of C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae, so comparisons Test RapidChlamydia/qPCR for C. trachomatis and culture/qPCR for N. gonorrhoeae were not possible. For S. agalactiae, on the other hand, qPCR was more advantageous than culture. The χ2 test showed a significant difference (Yates χ2 = 33.77 and p = 1-7) for the diagnosis of S. agalactiae. S. agalactiae qPCR had a sensitivity of 40.7%, a specificity of 94%, and positive and negative predictive values of 36.7% and 94.9% respectively, as well as a kappa = 0.33. Conclusion: The methods applied enabled us to identify the pathogens that cause cervicovaginal infections. The results suggest that qPCR may be an alternative, at least for the diagnosis of S. agalactiae. However, culture remains indispensable for studying antibiotic sensitivity. In order to improve patient care, molecular techniques need to be integrated into the HPD testing toolbox. To broaden the repertoire of pathogens to be diagnosed by qPCR, targeted comparison studies will be needed to increase the probability of encountering infected individuals.

ABSTRACT

The human microbiome contains genetic information that regulates metabolic processes in response to host health and disease. While acidic vaginal pH is maintained in normal conditions, the pH level increases in infectious vaginitis. We propose that this change in the vaginal environment triggers the biosynthesis of anti-vaginitis metabolites. Gene expression levels of Chryseobacterium gleum, a vaginal symbiotic bacterium, were found to be affected by pH changes. The distinctive difference in the metabolic profiles between two C. gleum cultures incubated under acidic and neutral pH conditions was suggested to be an anti-vaginitis molecule, which was identified as phenylacetic acid (PAA) by spectroscopic data analysis. The antimicrobial activity of PAA was evaluated in vitro, showing greater toxicity toward Gardnerella vaginalis and Candida albicans, two major vaginal pathogens, relative to commensal Lactobacillus spp. The activation of myeloperoxidase, prostaglandin E2, and nuclear factor-κB, and the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 were reduced by an intravaginal administration of PAA in the vaginitis mouse model. In addition, PAA displayed the downregulation of mast cell activation. Therefore, PAA was suggested to be a messenger molecule that mediates interactions between the human microbiome and vaginal health.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This meta-analysis aims to assess the efficacy of combining clotrimazole and metronidazole in the treatment of mixed infectious vaginitis (VA). The goal is to provide clinical guidance for future medication strategies. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of the literature database for studies involving the use of clotrimazole combined with metronidazole in the treatment of mixed infectious VA. After rigorous screening, eligible studies were subjected to meta-analysis using RevMan 5.3 software. Outcome measures included cure rates, recurrence rates, and the incidence of adverse reactions. Results: Six randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included, comprising 160 patients in the test group (treated with clotrimazole combined with metronidazole) and 160 patients in the control group (treated with alternative regimens). All selected studies were of high quality and possessed significant reference value. Meta-analysis results indicated that, in comparison to the control group, the test group exhibited a comparable incidence of adverse reactions (P > .05), higher cure rates, increased treatment satisfaction, and a lower recurrence rate (P < .05). Conclusions: The combination of clotrimazole and metronidazole is an effective treatment option for mixed infectious vaginitis, thus warranting recommendation.

ABSTRACT

Aerobic vaginitis (AV) is a recently defined vaginal recurring infection, which is treated with antibiotics. However, excessive and prolonged use of antibiotics disrupts healthy vaginal microflora and leads to the emergence of antibiotic resistance among pathogens. This situation has directed researchers to explore alternative antimicrobials. The current study describes in vitro and in vivo antimicrobial efficacy and pharmaceutical interactions between plant essential oils (EOs) and five lactic acid bacteria (LABs), isolated from the healthy vagina, against E. faecalis, one of the major etiological agents of AV. In vitro experiments confirm good antimicrobial activity of both plant EOs and cell free supernatant (CFS) from LABs. Based on high antimicrobial efficacy, Moringa essential oil (MO) was selected to determine its nature of interaction with CFS of five LAB strains. Synergism was recorded between MO and CFS of L. reuteri (MT180537). To validate in vitro findings, prophylactic responses of individual and synergistic application of MO and L. reuteri (MT180537) were evaluated in an E. faecalis (MW051601) induced AV murine model. The prophylactic efficacy was evidenced by a reduction in intensity of clinical symptoms, E. faecalis (MW051601) count per vaginal tissue along with a reduction in AV associated changes in histological markers of infection in animals receiving Moringa essential oil and L. reuteri (MT180537) alone or in combination. However, significant synergism between Moringa essential oil and L. reuteri (MT180537) could not be observed. Our data confirms the importance of in vivo experiments in deducing pharmacological interactions.


Vaginite aeróbica (VA) é uma infecção vaginal recorrente definida recentemente, que é tratada com antibióticos. No entanto, o uso excessivo e prolongado de antibióticos perturba a microflora vaginal saudável e leva ao surgimento de resistência aos antibióticos entre os patógenos. Esta situação levou os pesquisadores a explorar antimicrobianos alternativos. O presente estudo descreve a eficácia antimicrobiana in vitro e in vivo e as interações farmacêuticas entre óleos essenciais vegetais (OE) e cinco bactérias lácticas (BAL), isoladas de vagina sã, contra E. faecalis, um dos principais agentes etiológicos da AV. Os experimentos in vitro confirmam a boa atividade antimicrobiana de ambos os EOs de plantas e sobrenadante livre de células (CFS) de LABs. Com base na alta eficácia antimicrobiana, o óleo essencial de Moringa (MO) foi selecionado para determinar sua natureza de interação com o sobrenadante livre de células (CFS) de cinco cepas de LAB. Sinergismo foi registrado entre MO e CFS de L. reuteri (MT180537). Para validar os resultados in vitro, as respostas profiláticas da aplicação individual e sinérgica de MO e L. reuteri (MT180537) foram avaliadas em um modelo murino AV induzido por E. faecalis (MW051601). A eficácia profilática foi evidenciada por uma redução na intensidade dos sintomas clínicos, contagem de E. faecalis (MW051601) por tecido vaginal, juntamente com uma redução nas alterações associadas a AV nos marcadores histológicos de infecção em animais que receberam óleo essencial de Moringa e L. reuteri (MT180537) sozinho ou em combinação. No entanto, não foi possível observar sinergismo significativo entre o óleo essencial de Moringa e L. reuteri (MT180537). Nossos dados confirmam a importância dos experimentos in vivo na dedução de interações farmacológicas.

ABSTRACT

B-cell depleting therapies are effective in multiple sclerosis (MS) and are widely used (Hauser et al., 2017). Inflammatory vaginitis (IV), characterized by unexplained vaginal symptoms including mucopurulent discharge, pain, irritation, and dyspareunia, has been reported in one MS patient on ocrelizumab (Filikci and Jensen, 2022), and to be present in 3.5 % of women on rituximab for autoimmune diseases (Yockey et al., 2021). We report here four cases of IV in B cell depleted women with MS. B-cell reconstitution was temporally associated with improvement of IV symptoms. Further investigation and vigilance for this potential treatment emergent adverse event affecting sexual and reproductive health of women with MS is needed.

Background: Mixed vaginitis is the infection of the vagina by at least two different pathogens at the same time, both of which contribute to an abnormal vaginal environment leading to signs and symptoms. Baicao Fuyanqing suppository (BCFYQ) is a Miao ethnomedicine, used to treat various vaginitis. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and possible mechanism of BCFYQ in the treatment of mixed vaginitis based on 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing and metabonomics. Methods: Escherichia coli and Candida albicans were used to establish mixed vaginitis model in SD rats. Three groups of low, medium and high doses (0.18/0.36/0.64 g.kg-1) were established, and administered vaginally once a day for 6 consecutive days. After the last administration, vaginal pH and IL-1ß, IL-2, IL-13 and IgA levels were measured, and the vaginal tissue was examined pathologically. In addition, the vaginal flora was characterised by 16S rRNA, and endogenous metabolites in the vaginal tissue were detected by UHPLC-Q-Exactive MS. Results: Compared with the model group, BCFYQ can reduce the vaginal pH of rats, make it close to the normal group and improve the damaged vaginal epithelial tissue. The results of ELISA showed that BCFYQ decreased the levels of IL-1 ß and IL-2 and increased the levels of IL-13 and IgA (P<0.05). In addition, BCFYQ may increase the abundance of vaginal flora, especially Lactobacillus. The differential metabolite enrichment pathway suggests that the therapeutic mechanism of BCFYQ is mainly related to lipid metabolism and amino acid metabolism. Conclusion: Our research shows that BCFYQ has a good therapeutic effect on mixed vaginitis. It repairs the damaged vaginal mucosa by regulating the vaginal flora and lipid metabolism disorders to improve the local immune function of the vagina and inhibit the growth and reproduction of pathogens.

PURPOSE: Nonspecific vaginitis is a distinct clinical entity with particular microscopic and immunologic features. There is currently no standard of care for women with nonspecific vaginitis. The aim of our study was to assess the change in vaginal symptoms score after 3 months of treatment with an intravaginal medical device in participants with abnormal vaginal discharge and specific signs and symptoms. As secondary objectives, the study analyzed other clinical and microscopic features, such as vaginal discharge aspect, change in vaginal pH, change in vaginal microbiome, and vaginal inflammation. METHODS: The study population included 47 participants with symptomatic vulvovaginitis, distinct from candidiasis, trichomoniasis, or bacterial vaginosis. The study design included 2 research sites from Romania. The treatment protocol consisted of 1 ovule per day inserted intravaginally during 15 consecutive days. The total study duration was 3 months. FINDINGS: The intravaginal medical device had a positive impact on the vaginal symptoms score for 72.34% of the study participants. Topical administration of the ovules balanced vaginal pH values and significantly reduced signs of inflammation between study visits. IMPLICATIONS: This intravaginal medical device had curative effects that support its use as a stand-alone treatment in women with nonspecific vaginitis. A second clinical investigation is ongoing to evaluate the clinical efficacy of the device in postoperative care of cervical and vaginal wounds traumatic or secondary to surgical interventions. BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) is on the CDC Watch List of Antimicrobial Resistance Threats, yet there is no systematic surveillance to monitor change. METHODS: We initiated surveillance in sexual health clinics in 6 cities, selecting a quota sample of urogenital specimens tested for gonorrhea and/or chlamydia. We abstracted patient data from medical records and detected MG and macrolide-resistance mutations (MRMs) by nucleic acid amplification testing. We used Poisson regression to estimate adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% CIs, adjusting for sampling criteria (site, birth sex, symptom status). RESULTS: From October-December 2020 we tested 1743 urogenital specimens: 57.0% from males, 46.1% from non-Hispanic Black persons, and 43.8% from symptomatic patients. MG prevalence was 16.6% (95% CI: 14.9-18.5%; site-specific range: 9.9-23.5%) and higher in St Louis (aPR: 1.9; 1.27-2.85), Greensboro (aPR: 1.8; 1.18-2.79), and Denver (aPR: 1.7; 1.12-2.44) than Seattle. Prevalence was highest in persons <18 years (30.4%) and declined 3% per each additional year of age (aPR: .97; .955-.982). MG was detected in 26.8%, 21.1%, 11.8%, and 15.4% of urethritis, vaginitis, cervicitis, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), respectively. It was present in 9% of asymptomatic males and 15.4% of asymptomatic females, and associated with male urethritis (aPR: 1.7; 1.22-2.50) and chlamydia (aPR: 1.7; 1.13-2.53). MRM prevalence was 59.1% (95% CI: 53.1-64.8%; site-specific range: 51.3-70.6%). MRMs were associated with vaginitis (aPR: 1.8; 1.14-2.85), cervicitis (aPR: 3.5; 1.69-7.30), and PID cervicitis (aPR: 1.8; 1.09-3.08). CONCLUSIONS: MG infection is common in persons at high risk of sexually transmitted infections; testing symptomatic patients would facilitate appropriate therapy. Macrolide resistance is high and azithromycin should not be used without resistance testing.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate changes in vaginal microecology in women with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection after focused ultrasound (FU) treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected vaginal secretions at the time of admission and 3 months after FU treatment from 169 women who received FU treatment for cervical HR-HPV infection between July 2020 and September 2022. Among them, there were 101 patients with cute vaginitis, we also collected their vaginal secretions after one week of drug treatment. These samples were evaluated for vaginal microecology and HPV-DNA examination. RESULTS: Of the 169 patients, 101 (59.7%) suffered from acute vaginitis at the time of admission. After one week of targeted antibiotics drug treatment, there were no pathogens or pus cells on the field of microscopic vision, but there was no significant difference(p > 0.05) in the diversity and density of vaginal flora, the proportion and function of Lactobacillus (H2O2 negative rate) between one week after treatment and at the time of admission. At the time of admission of the 169 patients, the normal flora rate was 40.3%, which increased to 93.5% three months after FU treatment. The differences in vaginal secretion parameters at the time of admission and 3 months after FU treatment were as follows: H2O2 negative rate (37.3% vs. 3.6%), leukocyte esterase positive rate (54.4% vs. 5.9%), sialidase positive rate (38.5% vs. 4.1%), bacterial vaginitis positive rate (55% vs. 4.7%), fungal vaginitis positive rate (44.4% vs. 5.9%), and trichomonal vaginitis positive rate (7.1% vs. 0). The difference was statistically significant (p < 0.01). The pH value and Nagent score at the time of admission were significantly higher than those three months after FU. Three months after FU, the positive rate of HPV was 5.8% in the group of patients with normal vaginal microecology at the time of admission and post-FU; it was 6.7% in the group of patients with abnormal vaginal microecology at the time of admission and normal vaginal microecology post-FU; and it was 100% in the group patients with abnormal vaginal microecology at the time of admission and post-FU. A significant difference was observed among the three groups (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: FU is an effective treatment for patients with cervical HR-HPV infection. FU does not interfere with the vaginal microecology of HR-HPV positive patients with normal vaginal microecology.FU followed by antibiotic drug therapy for pathogens is beneficial to restore the function of Lactobacillus vaginalis in HR-HPV positive patients with acute vaginitis,so as to improve the vaginal microecology of HR-HPV positive patients with abnormal vaginal microecology.

Aerobic vaginitis (AV) is a gynecological disease associated with vaginal flora imbalance. The nonselective bactericidal nature of antibiotics and low customization rate of probiotic supplementation in existing treatments lead to AV recurrence. Here, a drug delivery strategy is proposed that works with the changing dynamics of the bacterial flora. In particular, a core-shell nanogel (CSNG) is designed to encapsulate prebiotic inulin and antimicrobial peptide Cath 30. The proposed strategy allows for the sequential release of both drugs using gelatinase produced by AV pathogenic bacteria, initially selectively killing pathogenic bacteria and subsequently promoting the proliferation of beneficial bacteria in the vagina. In a simulated infection environment in vitro, the outer layer of CSNGs, Cath 30 is rapidly degraded and potently killed the pathogenic bacterium Staphylococcus aureus at 2-6 h. CSNGs enhances proliferation of the beneficial bacterium Lactobacillus crispatus by more than 50% at 24 h. In a rat AV model, the drug delivery strategy precisely regulated the bacterial microenvironment while controlling the inflammatory response of the vaginal microenvironment. This new treatment approach, configured on demand and precisely controlled, offers a new strategy for the treatment of vaginal diseases.

We describe inflammatory vaginitis as a potential side effect of long-term rituximab treatment for multiple sclerosis in the absence of any other systemic disease or underlying malignancy.More studies are needed to characterise the incidence of inflammatory vaginitis among women on long-term rituximab therapy.

ABSTRACT

Background: The diagnosis and treatment of mixed vaginitis are more complicated than single pathogenic infections, and there may be adverse reactions and several contraindications to conventional antibiotic therapy. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the preliminary effects of Fufang Furong Effervescent Suppository for the management of aerobic vaginitis (AV) mixed with bacterial vaginosis (BV) using Accurate 16S absolute quantification sequencing (Accu16S). Methods: In the present randomized, blind, multi-center clinical trial, women (20 to 55 years) who had received a diagnosis of AV+BV were randomly assigned into clindamycin positive control (n = 41) and Fufang Furong Effervescent Suppository (n = 39) groups. The follow-up occurred in three time periods (V1: -2~0 days; V2: 15-17 days; V3: 40 ± 3 days). At each visit, two vaginal swabs, one for clinical evaluation and one for laboratory examination, were taken from each patient. The Nugent score, Donders' score, drug-related complications, recurrence rates, and microecological changes of vaginal swabs were assessed in the time three periods. Results: At baseline, the two groups were similar in frequency of presentation with vaginal burning, odor, abnormal discharge, and itching. No meaningful differences in Nugent and Donders' scores were detected between the two groups at stage V2 (Nugent: p = 0.67; Donders': p = 0.85) and V3 (Nugent: p = 0.97; Donders: p = 0.55). The Furong group presented fewer complications compared to the Clindamycin group. However, this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.15). Additionally, Accu16S indicated that the total abundance of bacteria in both groups sharply decreased in stage V2, but slightly increased in V3. In stage V3, the absolute abundance of Lactobacillus in the Furong group was considerably higher compared to untreated samples (p < 0.05). On the other hand, no momentous increase was detected in the Clindamycin group (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Fufang Furong Effervescent Suppository can be as effective as clindamycin cream in the management of AV+BV while may restore the vagina microecosystem better.

ABSTRACT

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), a common cause of vaginitis, affects 75% of women in their lifetime. In Kenya, vaginitis/VVC is managed using the vaginal discharge syndrome guidelines. We assessed how frequently healthcare workers consider the diagnosis of vaginitis/VVC in symptomatic women, and adherence to the syndromic guidelines, outpatient records at Nairobi City County health facilities, of non-pregnant symptomatic females aged ≥15 years were abstracted. Descriptive statistics were applied, and analysis of determinants of practice determined using multivariable logistic regression models. Of 6,516 patients, 4,236 (65%) (inter-facility range 11-92%) had vaginitis of which 1,554 (37%) were considered VVC (inter-facility range 0-99%). Vaginitis was associated with facility, adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 2.80 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.64-4.76) and aOR 0.03 (95% CI 0.02-0.04); and month, aOR 0.33 (95% CI 0.25-0.43). Vaginal examination was in 53% (inter-facility range 0-98%). Adherence to syndromic treatment was 56% (inter-facility range 0-83%), better with older patients (aOR 7.73, 95% CI 3.31-18.07). Vaginitis and VVC are commonly diagnosed in symptomatic patients in Nairobi; adherence to the syndromic guidelines is low and differs across the health facilities. Interventions to improve adherence are needed.

BACKGROUND: Consequences of long-term B cell depletion with rituximab are not well understood. We describe inflammatory vaginitis as a potential side effect of long-term rituximab treatment, distinct from previously described vulvovaginal pyoderma gangrenosum. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of women treated with rituximab for more than 1 year to determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of vaginitis cases. We conducted a case-control analysis with up to 3 controls for each vaginitis case. RESULTS: We identified sixteen inflammatory vaginitis cases. Women with vaginitis were age 23-68 (median 42), primarily being treated for ANCA-associated vasculitis (11/16; 69%). Most reported copious vaginal discharge (100%) and pain with sex (75%). All women with return of circulating B-cells to > 10 cells/mL had complete (5/9) or significant (4/9) improvement in symptoms. In case-control analysis there was no significant difference in length of B-cell depletion, immune parameters, creatinine levels, and history of neutropenia. CONCLUSION: Inflammatory vaginitis is a potential side effect of prolonged continuous B cell depletion with rituximab. More studies are needed to characterize the incidence and etiology of vaginitis among women on long term rituximab therapy and establish a causal relationship.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy, as a method of treatment of cervical and uterine cancers, may induce severe late-onset vaginal side effects. Unfortunately, little evidence on the management of adverse effects has been presented. This study aimed to evaluate the available interventions which reduce symptoms of vaginitis and vaginal atrophy by improving dyspareunia, mucosal inflammation, vaginal pH and vaginal dryness in women who have undergone brachytherapy or radiotherapy due to uterine or cervical malignancies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed following PRISMA guidelines. The systematic search was conducted using electronic databases, namely Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed, between October and November 2020 to identify randomized controlled trials (RCT) and, prospective randomized studies (PRS). RESULTS: The analyzed population consists of 376 patients with uterine or cervical cancer, treated with hyaluronic acid, vitamin A, vitamin E, alpha-tocopherol acetate and dienestrol. Intervention with HA along with vitamin A and vitamin E revealed advantage in endpoints such as reduced dyspareunia, vaginal mucosal inflammation, vaginal dryness, bleeding, fibrosis and cellular atypia. Administration of alpha-tocopherol acetate reduced vaginal mucosal inflammation and improved vaginal acanthosis, whereas dienestrol resulted in reduced dyspareunia, vaginal caliber and bleeding. CONCLUSIONS: Vaginal suppositories were found to be clinically effective at the management of late-onset vulvovaginal side effects after radiotherapy.

ABSTRACT

Aim There are more and more herbal preparations that are used for the purpose of treatment and improvement of the clinical manifestation of vaginitis not only by patients themselves, but also by healthcare professionals. Plant species, St. John's wort, chamomile, calendula, yarrow, shepherd's purse and tea tree oil are all well known for their anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and wound healing activity. This paper presents the results of a clinical study in which three herbal formulations/vagitories, based on extracts of St. John's wort, chamomile, calendula, yarrow, shepherd's purse and tea tree oil, were investigated for their effectiveness on vaginitis. Methods This was a randomized controlled clinical study that included 210 women with diagnosed vaginitis. Patients were divided into two basic groups, women in reproductive period and postmenopausal period. Three subgroups including 30 patients each received one of the three vagitorie formulations for 5 days, after which the effects on subjective and objective symptoms were monitored. Results Three types of vagitories based on plant extracts had a positive effect in the treatment of vaginitis. Vagitories based on tea tree oil showed better efficiency compared to vagitories with St. John's wort and vagitories based on extracts of five plants. Women in postmenopausal group reported better tolerability of St. John's wort-based and five herbs-based vagitories compared to tea tree oil based vagitories. Conclusion Investigated vagitories showed a positive effect on both objective and subjective symptoms of vagitnis. No serious side effects were reported.
