ABSTRACT

Because research dentists are far removed from formal training in scientific writing, the communication demands of dentistry become especially burdensome for them. Research dentists frequently can greatly benefit from a formal course in writing. This paper describes the philosophy, structure, and content of the professional writing course in the School of Dentistry at the University of California Los Angeles and suggests the major components such courses should have. The courses should be integral parts of the curriculum, should demonstrate the essential place of writing in scientific research, should make students sensitive to language in various contexts, and should emphasize a systematic approach to writing and revision.

ABSTRACT

Poor quality medical letters epitomise the failing communication skills of Australian doctors. I asked the 11 Australian medical schools to define how these skills are taught to undergraduates, and The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) to comment on the essay section of the college examinations. Six of the 11 universities replied; two of them teach communication. The RACGP supported the need to teach undergraduates communication skills.

ABSTRACT

When people are separated from the activities and relationships that make life so passionately interesting, they are separated from real accomplishment. A poet's non-therapeutic approach to writing led a group of ill and handicapped nursing home residents, aged 59-93 years, to find new strengths of feeling and ideas. Above all, it gave them the real accomplishment of some beautiful poetry.
