RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to compare the results of fractional microneedle radiofrequency (FMR) therapy in vegan and omnivorous participants. METHODS: A total of 30 vegan and 30 omnivorous women who were treated with FMR therapy for combating aging were included in the study. The clinical results were examined in Months 3 and 6 based on the Fitzpatrick Wrinkle Scale (FWS). Individual satisfaction was investigated in Month 6 using the Patient's Global Impression of Change (PGIC). RESULTS: At the onset of the treatment, there was no significant difference with regard to the FWS scores in both groups. The decrease in the FWS score was significantly lower in vegans after 3 months (p = 0.01). Vegans had worsened clinical outcomes by Month 6 (p = 0.01). The PGIC scores were significantly lower in vegans (p = 0.01). CONCLUSION: A vegan diet adversely affects the outcome of FMR therapy.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine whether MPV can be used as a marker for the activity and the severity index of alopesi areata (AA). METHOD: The charts of 71 children who received a diagnosis of AA and 70 age and gender-matched healthy children were retrospectively evaluated. The severity of hair loss was classified as S1 ( < 25%), S2 (25-49%), S3 (50-74%), S4 (75-95%), S4b (96-99%) (according to the percent of the area involved), alopecia totalis (AT), and alopecia universalis (AU). In the laboratory tests, the results of the complete blood count, anti-nuclear antibody (ANA), thyroid function tests (TSH, free/total T4, free/total T3), and autoimmune thyroid antibodies [antithyroid peroxidase antibody (anti-TPO) and anti-thyroglobulin antibody (AT)] were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 141 cases including 61 (43.3%) males and 80 (56.7%) females were included. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups according to the mean age (p > 0.05). The MPV measurements were statistically significantly higher in the AA group (p < 0.01). There was no statistically significant difference between the types of AA according to the mean age, gender distribution, the presence of nail involvement, the presence of family history, and the presence of autoimmune disease (p > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the severity of AA according to the mean age, gender distribution, the presence of nail involvement, the presence of family history, and the presence of autoimmune disease (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: MPV is helpful in assessing clinical activity in patients with AA. However, prospective studies involving more patients are needed to support our findings.

RESUMEN

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective clinical study. BACKGROUND: To the best of our knowledge, there is no study in the literature that addresses the effect of showing comparative photographs in the follow-up period to patients who had undergone nonsurgical rhinoplasty on patient satisfaction. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effect of showing preprocedure and postprocedure photographs to patients in the follow-up period on patient satisfaction. METHODS: It was a nonsimultaneous prospective study that included patients suitable for nonsurgical rhinoplasty. Photographs were taken during routine follow-up after 1 month of the procedure, and patients were asked to fill the Derriford Appearance Scale 24 (DAS24) and Rhinoplasty Outcome Evaluation (ROE) questionnaires. Next, after the preprocedure and postprocedure photographs were shown to the patients, they were asked to complete the DAS24 and ROE questionnaires again. RESULTS: The study included 265 female patients. The mean age of the patients was 35.11 ± 8 (18-61 years). Before the preprocedure and postprocedure photographs were shown, the DAS24 score was 52.2 ± 14.26 and the ROE score was 75.91 ± 11.91. After the photographs were shown, the DAS24 score was found to be 40.80 ± 13.25 and the ROE score as 87.722 ± 8.56. Therefore, significant improvement in DAS24 and ROE scores and an increase in patient satisfaction were observed after the preprocedure and postprocedure photographs were shown (p = 0.01, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Showing preprocedure and postprocedure photographs in the follow-up period to patients who underwent nonsurgical rhinoplasty leads to greater patient satisfaction with the surgery and their self-image.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonography has demonstrated a shortening of the distance between the origin of the nail plate and the base of the distal phalanx in retronychia. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical and ultrasonographic features of retronychia. METHODS: We evaluated the clinical findings in 18 patients with retronychia, along with the ratio of ultrasonographic distance a, extending between the nail plate origin and the base of the distal phalanx, to distance b, perpendicular to distance a, extending between the nail plate origin and the upper margin of the distal phalanx. RESULTS: Retronychia was present in 26 nails. The mean ± SD distance a was 7.66 ± 1.64 mm and distance b was 3.56 ± 1.95 mm. The mean ± SD a/b ratio was 2.59 ± 1.11. There was a significant inverse correlation between a/b ratio and clinical severity (Pearson correlation = -0.668; P < .001). The cutoff value of this ratio was 3.319, with specificity of 90% and sensitivity of 69%. CONCLUSIONS: The ratio of distance a/distance b and the cutoff value of this ratio may help in making the diagnosis, in objectively determining the disease severity, and in selecting a patient-specific treatment approach.

RESUMEN

Eccrine poroma is a rare benign adnexal neoplasm originating from a portion of the intraepidermal eccrine sweat gland duct and the acrosyringium. Typically, the lesions are asymptomatic, slow-growing nodules, which may be found in any sweat gland-bearing area. Multiple red lacunae, glomerular vessels, hairpin vessels, flower- and leaf-like vascular patterns, a polymorphic vascular pattern, globule/lacunae-like structures, a frog egg-like appearance, and comedo-like openings have been defined as characteristic dermoscopic patterns of the disease. We report a case of eccrine poroma in an unusual periungual and subungual location mimicking ingrown toenails. The dermoscopic findings of the lesions were compatible with those of eccrine poromas located in areas other than the periungual area. Recurrence was observed after the first excisional biopsy. There was no recurrence 10 months after the second surgical intervention, and near-complete regrowth of the nail plate was achieved. Eccrine poroma should be considered as a differential diagnosis in the presence of slow-growing, erythematous, painful, hemorrhagic papular lesions located in the periungual area in conjunction with a prediagnosis of ingrown toenails and malignant processes.

RESUMEN

Temporary henna tattoos have become increasingly widespread among children and young people, especially in holiday spots in recent years. Although reactions to henna tattoo are becoming progressively more common, only few cases of a henna pseudo-tattoo resulting in temporary hypertrichosis have been reported so far. Here, we have reported a 5-year-old girl who developed allergic contact dermatitis and localized hypertrichosis on her right arm after application of temporary henna tattoo during summer holiday.

RESUMEN

Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral disease that is characterized by palmoplantar vesicular eruption and erosive stomatitis. Beau's line and onychomadesis can be observed as late findings following HFMD due to arrest in nail matrix. We aimed to draw attention to HMFD and nail changes, which have been seen more frequently. Demographic characteristics and nail findings of 15 children, who were diagnosed with HFMD in the dermatology clinic of Beykoz State Hospital between August 2015-October 2015 were evaluated. Mean age of the patients was 5.13 years (1-13 years), 66.6% were boys (n=10), and 33.4% were girls (n=5); 53.3% were diagnosed in August (n=8). Dermatologic examinations revealed palmar and plantar vesicular eruptions in all cases, additionally one patient had vesicular eruptions also on hip, legs, and arms. Erosive stomatitis was present in oral mucosa of 60% of patients (n=9). Nail findings were determined after a mean of 4.06 weeks following HFMD. Onychomadesis and Beau's line were present in 66.6% (n=10) and 33.4% of the patients, respectively. Hand-foot-mouth disease is a viral infection of childhood, which may be seen as isolated cases or epidemics, and characterized with palmoplantar vesicular eruption and erosive stomatitis. Being aware that Beau's line and onychomadesis can be seen as late findings of HFMD and should relieve without treatment, will prevent unnecessary diagnostic and invasive interventions.
