By using electrocardiographic examination, 14 Purebred Arabian horses, 12 males and two females, disqualified due to exhaustion in endurance races from 60 and 160km were evaluated. Predominance of sinus tachycardia, followed by sinus arrhythmia and atrial premature complex, with the heart rate ranging from 48 to 78bpm, and 93 to 111bpm, respectively, were observed. There was increase in the amplitude of waves P, R, S, and T, and decrease in their durations, as well as reduction in the intervals and segments; nevertheless, the QRS complex was not almost altered. The QTc lengthening pointed to a moderate myocardial fatigue in response to exercise, and the elevation of ST was indicative of hypovolemia. The electrical axis in frontal plane presented deviation to the right, chamber increase, and hypertrophy secondary to training.

Trypanocidal activity of a number of lipophilic diamines and amino alcohols was evaluated in vitro against Trypanosoma cruzi blood stream forms. Several of the studied compounds showed inhibition of T. cruzi growth. The most active ones were compounds 3, 4 and 5 with a IC50 of 31.2 µg/mL, activity similar to the reference drug crystal violet.

Two cases of tricuspid valve dysplasia are reported. Dogs were presented for evaluation of weakness and ascites. In both cases, echocardiography disclosed tricuspid insufficiency and, in one of them, tricuspid leaflets also were displaced down into the right ventricle, substantiating Ebstein's anomaly. Medical therapy for congestive heart failure was initiated. One of the dogs suddenly died shortly after diagnosis was established. Although the other dog recovered much better initially, sudden death also occurred. Post-mortem examinations showed right atrioventricular enlargement, and thickened tricuspid leaflets. Clinical features, diagnostic methods and medical therapy are discussed in this paper.

Ten healthy puppies (five males and five females) were used to establish the regular echodopplercardiography profile during the neonatal period (from one to 30 days) utilizing Doppler (pulsed-wave and color flow). Mitral, tricuspid, aortic and pulmonary blood flows were measured. Positive correlations of all the measures, with body weight and age of the puppies for both sexes were observed. No differences in the cardiac development between male and female during the neonatal phase were observed.

RESUMEN
To stuck the effect of chemotherapy on parasite-macrophage interaction we used the wild-type Y strain (drug-susceptible) of Trypanosoma cruzi and a drug-resistant parasite population derived from the same strain. Trypomastigotes isolated from untreated infected mice, as well as, 3 h after treatment with BZ were incubated with inflammatory macrophages and used to study phagocytosis, parasite destruction, cytokine release and reactive nitrogen intermediates (RN!) synthesis. Phagocytosis and destruction of the drug-susceptible parasites were significant/v enhanced by drug treatment. These enhancements were accompanied by an increase in cytokines [interleukin (IL)-12 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)alpha] and RNI release by murine inflammatory macrophages primed with IFN-gamma. In contrast, BZ treatment of mice infected with drug-resistant T. cruzi population showed no effect whatsoever. The synthesis of IFN-gamma and RNI by splenocytes of mice infected with either susceptible and drug-resistant parasite populations, before and after treatment with BZ were also studied. On/v the splenocytes from mice infected with the drug-susceptible parasites treated with BZ produced high levels of IFN-gamma and RNI. Our findings indicate that BZ acts on the drug-susceptible T. cruzi parasites by enhancing the phagocytosis and the production of cytokines and RN!, thus, favouring the destruction of the intracellular parasites by the cellular compartment of the immune system.
