RESUMEN

The aim of this work was to evaluate the presence of 40 pesticides in the PM10 emitted by rural soils of the semiarid region of Argentina. Six agricultural soils for grain production under no till and with high use of pesticides (AG), 5 agricultural soils for forage and grain production under conventional tillage (AFG) and 5 unpaved rural roads (RR) were sampled. The PM10 was generated using the Easy Dust Generator and it was collected with an electrostatic precipitator. The presence of 20 herbicides, 14 insecticides and 6 fungicides was analyzed in the soil and in the PM10. More than 70% of the pesticides analyzed were detected in the soil and in the PM10. All agricultural soils and 87% of RR soils showed at least one residue of pesticides. Multiresidues of pesticides were found in the 100% of PM10 emitted by rural soils. The mean number of pesticides was higher in the PM10 (7) than in the soil (5). Some pesticides were not detected in the soils but they were detected in the PM10 (triticonazole, carbofuran, metsulfuron methyl) and vice versa. In general, the concentrations of herbicides were higher in the PM10 than in the soil, while the concentrations of insecticides and fungicides were lower in the PM10 than in the soil. These results suggest that the concentrations of pesticide in the PM10 (inhalable fraction) should be used instead the concentrations of pesticide in the soil to calculate the exposure factor to pesticides by dust inhalation. This study provides the initial evidence of the presence of multiple pesticide residues in PM10 emitted by rural soils under different land management. Also confirms that the PM10 is a potential source of air contamination with pesticides. Future studies should be driven to measure the concentrations of pesticides and their dynamics in the PM10.

The widespread and excessive use of pesticides in modern agricultural practices has caused pesticide contamination of the environment, animals, and humans, with confirmed serious health consequences. This study aimed to identify the 20 most critical substances based on an analysis of detection frequency (DF) and median concentrations (MC) across environmental and biological matrices. A sampling campaign was conducted across 10 case study sites in Europe and 1 in Argentina, each encompassing conventional and organic farming systems. We analysed 209 active substances in a total of 4609 samples. All substances ranked among the 20 most critical were detected in silicon wristbands worn by humans and animals and indoor dust from both farming systems. Five of them were detected in all environmental matrices. Overall, higher values of DF and MC, including in the blood plasma of animals and humans, were recorded in samples of conventional compared to organic farms. The differences between farming systems were greater in the environmental samples and less in animal and human samples. Ten substances were detected in animal blood plasma from conventional farms and eight in animal blood plasma from organic farms. Two of those, detected in both farming systems, are classified as hazardous for mammals (acute). Five substances detected in animal blood plasma from organic farms and seven detected in animal blood plasma from conventional farms are classified as hazardous for mammals (dietary). Three substances detected in human blood plasma are classified as carcinogens. Seven of the substances detected in human blood plasma are classified as endocrine disruptors. Six substances, of which five were detected in human blood plasma, are hazardous for reproduction/development. Efforts are needed to elucidate the unknown effects of mixtures, and it is crucial that such research also considers biocides and banned substances, which constitute a baseline of contamination that adds to the effect of substances used in agriculture.

The intensification of livestock farming can pose risks to the environment due to the increased use of veterinary products and the generation of waste in confined areas. The quality of water bodies near livestock establishments (Areco River (A) and Doblado stream (D), San Antonio de Areco, Buenos Aires, Argentina) was studied by physicochemical parameters, metals, pesticides, emerging contaminants, and lethal and sublethal toxicity (neurotoxicity and oxidative stress) in larvae of the native amphibian Rhinella arenarum. Six sites were selected: upstream (S1A and S1D), at the level (S2A and S2D), and downstream (S3A and S3D) from the establishments. A low concentration of dissolved oxygen was observed in Doblado stream (< 2.34 mg/L). Cu, Mn, V, and Zn exceeded the limits for the protection of aquatic life at various sites. Between 24 and 34 pesticides were detected in all sites, with 2,4-D, atrazine, and metolachlor being the most recurrent. In water and sediment, the concentrations of ivermectin (S2A, 1.32 µg/L and 58.18 µg/kg; S2D, 0.8 µg/L and 85.22 µg/kg) and oxytetracycline (S2A, < 1 mg/L and < 1 mg/kg; S2D, 11.8 mg/L and 39 mg/kg) were higher at sites near the establishments. All sites caused between 30 and 38.3% of lethality and produced neurotoxicity and alterations in the reduced glutathione content. Moreover, larvae exposed to samples from all sites incorporated ivermectin. These results demonstrate the degradation of the studied sites in relation to the agricultural activities of the area, highlighting the need to take measures to protect and preserve aquatic ecosystems.

Freshwater ecosystems face a particularly high risk of biodiversity loss compared to marine and terrestrial systems. The use of pesticides in agricultural fields is recognized as a relevant stressor for freshwater environments, exerting a negative impact worldwide on the overall status and health of the freshwater communities. In the present work, part of the Horizon 2020 funded SPRINT project, the occurrence of 193 pesticide residues was investigated in 64 small water bodies of distinct typology (creeks, streams, channels, ditches, rivers, lakes, ponds and reservoirs), located in regions with high agricultural activity in 10 European countries and in Argentina. Mixtures of pesticide residues were detected in all water bodies (20, median; 8-40 min-max). Total pesticide levels found ranged between 6.89 and 5860 ng/L, highlighting herbicides as the dominant type of pesticides. Glyphosate was the compound with the highest median concentration followed by 2,4-D and MCPA, and in a lower degree by dimethomorph, fluopicolide, prothioconazole and metolachlor(-S). Argentina was the site with the highest total pesticide concentration in water bodies followed by The Netherlands, Portugal and France. One or more pesticides exceeded the threshold values established in the European Water Framework Directive for surface water in 9 out of 11 case study sites (CSS), and the total pesticide concentration surpassed the reference value of 500 ng/L in 8 CSS. Although only 5 % (bifenthrin, dieldrin, fipronil sulfone, permethrin, and terbutryn) of the individual pesticides denoted high risk (RQ > 1), the ratios estimated for pesticide mixtures suggested potential environmental risk in the aquatic compartment studied.

This study aimed to examine the association of Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence and MD components with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in pregnant women from Spain and Sweden. A total of 138 pregnant women from Spain (age: 32.9 ± 4.6 years old) and 302 pregnant women from Sweden (age: 31.3 ± 4.1 years old) were included. MD adherence was assessed with the Mediterranean food pattern (i.e., a MD index) at the 14-16th gestational weeks. HRQoL was assessed with the Spanish and Swedish versions of the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36 and RAND-36, respectively) at the 14-16th and 34-37th gestational weeks. A greater MD adherence was associated with better physical functioning, bodily pain, vitality, emotional role, and mental health in cross-sectional associations (2nd trimester) in the Spanish sample (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, a greater MD adherence was associated with lower bodily pain in both Spanish and Swedish samples (both p < 0.05) in the 3rd trimester. The associations of MD adherence with pain seem to be explained by a greater intake of fiber, fish, fruits, nuts, and legumes (all p < 0.05). A greater MD adherence, driven by a higher intake of fiber, fish, fruits, nuts, and legumes, was associated with lower pain throughout pregnancy in both Mediterranean and non-Mediterranean populations.

Argentina stands as one of the leading consumers of herbicides. In a laboratory incubation experiment, the persistence and production of degradation metabolites of Atrazine, 2,4-D, and Glyphosate were investigated in a loamy clay soil under two contrasting agricultural practices: continuous soybean cultivation (T1) and intensified rotations with grasses and legumes (T2). The soils were collected from a long-term no-till trial replicating the influence of the meteorological conditions in the productive region. The soil was enriched with diluted concentrations of 6.71, 9.95, and 24 mg a.i./kg-1 of soil for the respective herbicides, equivalent to annual doses commonly used in the productive region. Samples were taken at intervals of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 16, 32, and 64 days, and analysis was conducted using high-resolution liquid chromatography UPLC MS/MS. An optimal fit to the first-order kinetic model was observed for each herbicide in both rotations, resulting in relatively short half-lives. Intensified crop sequences favored the production of biotic degradation metabolites. The impact of the high frequency of soybean cultivation revealed a trend of soil acidification and a reduced biological contribution to attenuation processes in soil contamination.

The production of sugarcane bioethanol generates large volumes of vinasse, an effluent whose final disposal can produce an environmental impact that is of concern. The long-term disposal of vinasse in sugarcane fields could challenge crop management, such as the performance of traditional herbicides, by changing soil properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of long-term vinasse application on the field and the dissipation of atrazine and ametryn herbicides in a subtropical sugarcane agroecosystem, and to discuss the potential processes involved in it. Vinasse affected soil properties by increasing pH (12%), electrical conductivity (160%), and soil organic carbon (25%) at 0-10 cm depth of soil. Differences in the herbicide calculated sorption coefficient (Kd) varied according to the pedotransfer function applied and the herbicide type (atrazine or ametryn). During the first seven days after herbicide application, the soil underwent long-term vinasse application and increased atrazine and ametryn dissipation 45% and 33%, respectively, compared with the conventional fertilization scheme (control). The Pesticide Root Zone Model revealed that dissipation was mediated mainly by the degradation process rather than transport or other processes. The long-term application of vinasse in a typical sugarcane field of Tucumán, Argentina decreased the potential groundwater pollution of triazines and, adversely, reduced their bioavailability for weed control. For this, the present study presents original information about how long-term treatment with vinasse may require an adaptation of conventional management practices such as the application of herbicides in Argentina and other sugarcane-producing regions. This study aimed to investigate whether the effects of an exercise program during pregnancy on postpartum body composition are moderated by following a healthy dietary pattern (i.e., Mediterranean diet (MD)). Eighty-three pregnant women (control n = 40, exercise n = 43) were included in the present quasi-experimental study. The exercise intervention consisted of a 60 min, 3 day/week throughout pregnancy from gestational week 17, supervised concurrent (aerobic + resistance) exercise program. A food frequency questionnaire and the MD Score (min-max: 0-50) were employed to assess dietary habits and the MD adherence during pregnancy, respectively. Postpartum body composition was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, 6 weeks postpartum. The body mass index and the gynecoid fat mass at postpartum were lower in the exercise compared to the control group (p = 0.018 and p = 0.047, respectively). There was an interaction showing that the MD adherence during pregnancy positively moderated the effects of the exercise intervention on postpartum lean mass (p = 0.024), fat mass percentage (p = 0.092), android fat mass (p = 0.076), and android-to-gynecoid fat mass (p = 0.019). The Johnson-Neyman technique revealed that the effects of exercise were enhanced at a MD score of ~31 for lean mass, ~25 for fat mass, ~23 for android fat mass and ~29 for android-to-gynecoid fat mass. Our results suggest that a concurrent-exercise training plus an optimal MD adherence during pregnancy might be a useful strategy to promote a healthier body composition at the postpartum period.

Pesticides are widely used as plant protection products (PPPs) in farming systems to preserve crops against pests, weeds, and fungal diseases. Indoor dust can act as a chemical repository revealing occurrence of pesticides in the indoor environment at the time of sampling and the (recent) past. This in turn provides information on the exposure of humans to pesticides in their homes. In the present study, part of the Horizon 2020 funded SPRINT project, the presence of 198 pesticide residues was assessed in 128 indoor dust samples from both conventional and organic farmworker households across Europe, and in Argentina. Mixtures of pesticide residues were found in all dust samples (25-121, min-max; 75, median). Concentrations varied in a wide range (<0.01 ng/g-206 µg/g), with glyphosate and its degradation product AMPA, permethrin, cypermethrin and piperonyl butoxide found in highest levels. Regarding the type of pesticides, insecticides showed significantly higher levels than herbicides and fungicides. Indoor dust samples related to organic farms showed a significantly lower number of residues, total and individual concentrations than those related to conventional farms. Some pesticides found in indoor dust were no longer approved ones (29 %), with acute/chronic hazards to human health (32 %) and with environmental toxicity (21 %).

The indiscriminate use of pesticides represents high ecological risk in aquatic systems. Recently, the inclusion of epilithic biofilms as a reactive matrix has shown potential in diagnosing the health of water resources. The objective of this study was to use multiple matrices (water, suspended sediments, and biofilms) to discriminate contamination degrees in catchments with long and recent history of intensive pesticide use and to monitor growing season pesticides transfer to watercourses. Two catchments were monitored: one representative of "modern agriculture" in a subtropical environment, and another representative of recent agricultural expansion over the Pampa Biome in subtropical Brazil. Glyphosate and AMPA were accumulated in the biofilms and were detected at all sites and at all monitoring times, in concentrations ranging from 195 to 7673 µg kg-1 and from 225 to 4180 µg kg-1, respectively. Similarly, the fungicide tebuconazole has always been found in biofilms. The biofilms made it possible to discriminate the long-term history of pesticide use in the catchments and even to identify the influx pulses of pesticides immediately after their application to crops, which was not possible with active water sampling and even with suspended sediment monitoring. It is strongly recommended that, in regions with intensive cultivation of soybeans and other genetically modified crops, the presence of glyphosate and its metabolite AMPA be permanently monitored, a practice still very scarce in the literature.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) may be altered during pregnancy due to pregnancy-related changes in all domains of women's health. HYPOTHESIS: A supervised concurrent exercise-training program from the 17th gestational week until birth positively influences HRQoL. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 1. METHODS: Eighty-six pregnant women (age, 33.1 ± 4.6 years; prepregnancy body mass index, 23.5 kg/m2), divided into exercise (n = 41) and control (n = 45) groups, participated in this study (per-protocol basis). The exercise group followed a 60-min, 3 days/week, concurrent (aerobic + resistance) exercise training program. HRQoL was assessed with the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), where higher scores (0-100) indicate better HRQoL. RESULTS: After adjusting for potential confounders, the exercise group decreased 16.1 points less than the control group in the SF-36 physical functioning domain [between-group differences (B): 95% confidence interval (CI), 9.02 to 23.22; P < 0.01], and 4.5 points less in the SF-36 physical component summary than the control group (between-group differences (B): 95% CI, 0.65 to 8.28; P = 0.02). Intention-to-treat basis analyses depicted similar results, where the exercise group decreased 10.03 points less than the control group the in the SF-36 social functioning domain (between-group differences (B): 95% CI, 0.39 to 19.68; P = 0.04). CONCLUSION: A supervised concurrent exercise training program ameliorates HRQoL decreases along gestation. Although HRQoL decreased throughout pregnancy in both groups, this impact was less in the exercise group, especially in the SF-36 physical functioning, the SF-36 social functioning, and the SF-36 physical component summary. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Healthcare providers may encourage pregnant women to exercise in this physiological stage for a better HRQoL throughout pregnancy. Neonicotinoids are globally used insecticides, and there are increasing evidence on their negative effects on birds. This study is aimed at characterizing the behavioral and physiological effects of the neonicotinoid imidacloprid (IMI) in a songbird. Adults of Agelaioides badius were exposed for 7 days to non-treated peeled millet and to peeled millet treated with nominal concentrations of 75 (IMI1) and 450 (IMI2) mg IMI/kg seed. On days 2 and 6 of the trial, the behavior of each bird was evaluated for 9 min by measuring the time spent on the floor, the perch, or the feeder. Daily millet consumption, initial and final body weight, and physiological, hematological, genotoxic, and biochemical parameters at the end of exposure were also measured. Activity was greatest on the floor, followed by the perch and the feeder. On the second day, birds exposed to IMI1and IMI2 remained mostly on the perch and the feeder, respectively. On the sixth day, a transition occurred to sectors of greater activity, consistent with the disappearance of the intoxication signs: birds from IMI1 and IMI2 increased their time on the floor and the perch, respectively. Control birds always remained most of the time on the floor. IMI2 birds significantly decreased their feed intake by 31% the first 3 days, compared to the other groups, and significantly decreased their body weight at the end of the exposure. From the set of hematological, genotoxic, and biochemical parameters, treated birds exhibited an alteration of glutathione-S-transferase activity (GST) in breast muscle; the minimal effects observed are probably related to the IMI administration regime. These results highlight that the consumption of less than 10% of the bird daily diet as IMI-treated seeds trigger effects at multiple levels that can impair bird survival.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed i) to investigate the effects of a concurrent (aerobic plus strength) exercise intervention during pregnancy on placental mtDNA copy number, proportion of deleted mtDNA, and on the content of some trace and ultra-trace minerals with coenzymatic relevance; ii) to explore the association of such mitochondrial markers with the concentration of these minerals. METHODS: For the present study specific aims, 47 placentas were randomly selected from women that participated in the GESTAFIT project into exercise (n = 24) or control (n = 23) groups. The exercise group followed a concurrent aerobic and strength training program, three 60-min sessions/week, from the 17th gestational week until birth. Placenta tissue was collected and processed for minerals determination by the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique. RT-PCR was used to determine placentas mtDNA copy number and ND1/ND4 deletion. RESULTS: After adjusting for potential confounders, the mothers who participated in the exercise program had placentas with greater mtDNA copy number (p = 0.04) and lower mtDNA deletion (p = 0.003). Placentas from mothers in the exercise group presented higher manganese content than those from the controls (0.26 ± 0.03 mg/dL vs. 0.13 ± 0.03 mg/dL, p = 0.003). Placenta manganese content was significantly associated with lower mtDNA deletions (r = -0.382) and greater mtDNA copy number (r = 0.513). Iron content was associated with higher mtDNA copy number (r = 0.393). Selenium content was associated with lower mtDNA deletion (r = -0.377) and greater mtDNA copy number (r = 0.442). Finally, zinc and magnesium content were associated with higher mtDNA copy number (r = 0.447 and r = 0.453, respectively). DISCUSSION: This concurrent exercise training program induced a better placental status, which might be mediated through an improvement of mitochondrial bioenergetics and antioxidative capacity.

Amphibians are subject to several stressors in the aquatic and terrestrial environments, and human activities have profoundly impacted this vertebrate group. The aim of the present study was to analyze physicochemical parameters, metals and pesticide residues, and the toxicity of water and sediment samples from an environment with high agricultural activity (S1: Salto stream; S2: drainage channel downstream from S1) by means of bioassays using Rhinella arenarum (Amphibia: Anura) larvae. Metals and pesticides were analyzed in water and sediment samples by fluorescence spectrometer of X-ray by total reflection and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-MS/MS, respectively. For lethality bioassays, 10 larvae (in triplicate) were exposed for 504 h to water and sediment samples. Also, 50 larvae were exposed for 96 h (in triplicate) to water and sediment samples for the evaluation of biomarkers of neurotoxicity, oxidative stress, and genotoxicity. Twenty-six different pesticides (mainly herbicides) were detected in both sites, and Cu, Zn, and Pb exceeded the limit for protection of aquatic life. Lethality was observed in larvae exposed to water and sediment samples from both sites at chronic exposure. Oxidative stress was observed in larvae exposed to both sites. In larvae exposed to samples from S1, alterations in the neurotoxicity biomarkers were observed. These results alert about the degradation of the sites and highlight the need to monitor and control the use of pesticides. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Twenty-six pesticides were detected in water and sediment from Salto stream basin. Significant mortality was observed in larvae exposed to samples from all sites. Sublethal effects were observed mainly in larvae exposed to samples from Salto stream. The degraded quality can be associated with the agricultural activities of the area.

We aimed to investigate whether the effects of exercise on placental relative telomere length (RTL) after delivery are modulated by the Mediterranean diet [MD] adherence in 65 pregnant women (control n = 34, exercise n = 31). No differences were found in placental RTL between the exercise and the control groups (p = 0.557). The interaction-term between exercise and MD adherence with placental RTL was significant (p = 0.001). Specifically, women in the exercise group showed longer placental RTL after birth compared to controls (referent group), only for those women with a high MD adherence (mean difference = 0.467, p=0.010). A concurrent-exercise training plus an optimal MD adherence during pregnancy might prevent the placental RTL shortening.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to explore the influence of a concurrent exercise (aerobic + resistance) training program, from the 17th gestational week (g.w.) until birth on low back and sciatic pain, and pain disability. A total of 93 pregnant women divided into exercise (n = 49) and control (n = 44) groups followed a 60-min, 3 days/week, concurrent exercise training. METHODS: Low back and sciatic pain were measured with a Visual Analogic Scale (VAS). The disability resulting from pain was assessed with the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Measures were performed at the 16th and 34th g.w. RESULTS: The exercise group increased 21.9 mm less the VAS low back (between-group differences (B): 95% CI: -33.6 to -10.2; p < 0.001) and 12.9 mm less the VAS sciatica score (between-group differences: 95% CI (B): -21.8 to -4.0; p = 0.005) than the control group. Regarding the ODI questionnaire, the exercise group increased 0.7, 0.5, and 0.7 less than the control group in pain while sleeping (between-group differences (B): 95% CI: -1.4 to -0.01; p = 0.025), pain while lifting weight (between-group differences (B): 95% CI: -0.9 to -0.01; p = 0.016), and limitations of the social life due to pain (between-group differences(B): 95% CI: -1.3 to -0.06; p = 0.032). Furthermore, the exercise group suffered 6.9% less pain than the control group in the ODI total score (between-group differences (B): 95% CI: -13.9 to 0.053; p = 0.052). CONCLUSION: This concurrent exercise training program adapted to pregnant women improved pain compared to controls.

Glyphosate (Gly) and its principal degradation product, the aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) were found in soils from a riparian environment in Argentina. Sixty-five actinobacteria were isolated from these soils, rhizosphere, and plants (Festuca arundinacea and Salix fragilis). The isolate Streptomyces sp. S5 was selected to be used as bioinoculant in a greenhouse test, in which plants, actinobacteria, and their combinations were assessed to bioremediate the riparian soil. The dissipation of both compounds were estimated. All treatments dissipated similarly the Gly, reaching 87-92 % of dissipation. AMPA, dissipation of 38 % and 42 % were obtained by Salix and Festuca, respectively, while they increased to 57 % and 70 % when the actinobacterium was added to each planted system. Regarding the total dissipation, the higher efficiencies for both compounds were achieved by the non-planted soils bioaugmented with the actinobacterium, with 91 % of Gly dissipated and 56 % for AMPA. According to our study, it could be suggested which strategy could be applied depending on the bioremediation type needed. If in situ bioremediation is necessary, the combination of phytoremediation and actinobacteria bioaugmentation could be convenient. On the other hand, if ex situ bioremediation is needed, the inoculation of the soil with an actinobacterium capable to dissipate Gly and AMPA could be the more efficient and easier alternative.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of a supervised concurrent exercise-training program during pregnancy on maternal and neonatal birth-related outcomes and type of birth. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-nine Caucasian pregnant women from the GESTAFIT project participated in this quasi-experimental study and were allocated into control [(n = 86), (age 33.1 ± 4.8 years old, BMI 24.8 ± 4.1 kg/m2 )] or exercise group [(n = 50) (age 33.1 ± 4.1 years old, BMI: 24.7 ± 4.1 kg/m2 )]. The exercise group followed a 60-min 3 days/week concurrent (aerobic and strength) training program from the 17th gestational week until birth. Maternal and neonatal birth-related outcomes (i.e., gestational age at birth, duration of labor, placental and neonatal weight and type of birth) were collected from obstetric medical records. Umbilical arterial and venous blood gas analysis were assessed after birth. RESULTS: The exercise group increased average duration of the first stage of labor [between-group differences (B): 80.8 min, 95% confidence interval (CI), 4.18, 157.31, p = 0.03] and decreased duration of the second stage of labor [between-group differences (B): 29.8 min, 95% CI: -55.5, -4.17, p = 0.02] compared to the control group. The exercise group showed greater placental [between-group differences (B): 53.3 g (95% CI: 9.99, 96.7, p = 0.01)] and neonatal [between-group differences (B): 161.8 g (95% CI: 9.81, 313.8, p = 0.033)] weight compared to the control group. No differences between groups were found regarding type of birth (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: A concurrent and supervised physical exercise program during pregnancy is safe and could promote better maternal and neonatal birth-related outcomes. More studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms by which physical exercise increases neonatal and placenta weight.

To examine the association of Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence during pregnancy with maternal and neonatal lipid, glycemic, and inflammatory markers. This study included 152 women from the GESTAFIT trial and a subsample of 35 newborns. The Mediterranean Diet Score, derived from food frequency questionnaires, was employed to assess MD adherence. Total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides, and glucose were assessed in the mother (at the 16th and 34th gestational weeks [g.w.]) and in cord arterial and venous serum with standard procedures using an autoanalyzer. Pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin [IL]-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-1beta, interferon gamma, and tumour necrosis factor alpha [TNF-α]) were measured with Luminex xMAP technology. A greater MD adherence was associated with higher HDL-C and lower LDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, triglycerides, triglycerides/HDL-C ratio, and TNF-α in the mother at the 16th and the 34th g.w. (|ß|: 0.191-0.388, p < 0.05). A higher intake of whole grain cereals, fruits, vegetables and fish and a lower intake of sweets were associated with higher HDL-C and lower LDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, triglycerides, triglycerides/HDL-C ratio, and TNF-α at the 16th and 34th g.w. (|ß|: 0.188-0.334, p < 0.05). No associations were found with the cord arterial and venous serum markers (p > 0.05). A greater MD adherence during pregnancy, driven by a higher intake of whole grain cereals, fruits, vegetables and fish, and a lower intake of sweets, was positively associated with the maternal lipid and inflammatory serum markers throughout gestation. MD adherence during pregnancy was not associated with cord serum markers.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to provide practical considerations for assessing MD adherence during pregnancy based on the association with cardiometabolic risk. STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A food frequency questionnaire was fulfilled by 152 pregnant women at the 16th gestational week (g.w.). We calculated the Mediterranean Food Pattern (MFP), the MD Scale (MDScale), the Short MD questionnaire (SMDQ), the MD Score (MedDietScore), and the MD scale for pregnant women (MDS-P). The cardiometabolic risk score consisted of pre-pregnancy body mass index, blood pressure, glucose, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (at 16th and 34th g.w.). RESULTS: Multiple linear regression models showed that the MFP, the MedDietScore, and the SMDQ were associated with lower cardiometabolic risk at the 16th and 34th g.w. (ß's: -0.193 to -0.415, all p < 0.05); and the MDS-P at the 34th g.w. (ß = -0.349, p < 0.01). A comparison of these models with the J test showed that the MFP and the MedDietScore outperformed the SMDQ at the 16th g.w. (p's < 0.05); while the MedDietScore outperformed the SMDQ, MFP, and MDS-P (p's < 0.05) at the 34th g.w. Receiver-Operating-Characteristic-derived thresholds for the MFP, MedDietScore and MDS-P indices were 21, 30, and 6 points, respectively, to identify women with high cardiometabolic risk. CONCLUSION: The MFP and MedDietScore are recommended to assess MD adherence during pregnancy, as these showed the strongest associations with cardiometabolic risk. Our validated thresholds might assist in the detection of poor dietary patterns during pregnancy.
