RESUMEN

To complement the sequencing of the three kinetoplastid genomes reported in this issue, we have undertaken a whole-organism, proteomic analysis of the four life-cycle stages of Trypanosoma cruzi. Peptides mapping to 2784 proteins in 1168 protein groups from the annotated T. cruzi genome were identified across the four life-cycle stages. Protein products were identified from >1000 genes annotated as "hypothetical" in the sequenced genome, including members of a newly defined gene family annotated as mucin-associated surface proteins. The four parasite stages appear to use distinct energy sources, including histidine for stages present in the insect vectors and fatty acids by intracellular amastigotes.

RESUMEN

Subjects differentially evaluated one excellently qualified candidate for a teaching position in Grade 4 as a function of varied informal notes attached to an application. The three variations were heterosexually cued behaviors, homosexually cued behaviors, and no cues. This application was presented along with four other standardized applications to which informal notes were also attached. The application was rated most favorably by the subjects when the heterosexually cued behaviors were present, and least favorably when homosexually cued behaviors were present. In addition, men displayed more discriminative behaviors in their ratings than did women.

RESUMEN

The focus of this article is on the acute care and rehabilitation of the patient with coronary artery disease. The purpose is to provide an overview of the clinical treatment used at the University of Iowa Hospital, for the practicing physical therapist who may be unfamiliar with this type of patient. The three primary phases of the cardiac rehabilitation program are discussed with emphasis on the treatment of the patient with a post-myocardial infarction. Specific guidelines regarding evaluation and progression of physical activity are provided.
