RESUMEN

In the past few decades, significant efforts have been devoted to developing phenazine derivatives in various fields such as medicine, pesticides, dyes, and conductive materials owing to their highly Stokes-shifted fluorescence and distinctive photophysical properties. The modulation of the surrounding environment can effectively influence the luminescent behavior of phenazine derivatives, prompting us to investigate the solvent effect on the excited state dynamics. Herein, we present the solvent controlled excited state dynamics of a novel triphenylamine-based phenazine-imidazole molecule (TPAIP) through steady-state spectra and femtosecond transient absorption spectra. The fluorescence emission spectrum exhibited a redshift with increasing solvent polarity, indicating the existence of a charge transfer state. Furthermore, by tracking the femtosecond transient absorption spectra of TPAIP, we found that the nature of the relaxed S1 state was strongly influenced by the solvent polarity: intersystem crossing character appears in apolar solvent, whereas intramolecular charge transfer character occurs in polar solvent because of solvation. These findings provide significant theoretical insights into the impact of solvents on the excited state dynamics within phenazine derivatives. This understanding supports diverse applications ranging from advanced biological probe design to photocatalysis and pharmaceutical research.

Background: Color Doppler ultrasonography (CDUS) is feasible to detect arteriovenous fistula (AVF) dysfunction in hemodialysis patients but is not sufficient to map the structure of fistula required for interventions. This study is designed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of three-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (TOF-MRA) at 3.0T versus CDUS for AVF dysfunction, by using digital subtraction angiography (DSA) as reference. Methods: This prospective study enrolled 68 consecutive patients with dysfunctional AVF who underwent both CDUS and TOF-MRA at Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The analysis of the dysfunctional AVFs was divided into three regions: the feeding artery, fistula and draining veins. In the whole- and per-regional-based analyses, two observers who were blinded to the clinical and DSA results independently analyzed all CDUS and TOF-MRA datasets. The image quality and stenosis severity of the lesions on TOF-MRA were evaluated. A receiver operating characteristic curve was applied to analyze the detection of AVF dysfunction with TOF-MRA. Results: A total of 204 vessel regions were evaluated. The whole-region-based image quality of TOF-MRA was poorer in patients with a total occlusion (1.8±0.8) than in those with stenosis (2.7±0.6, P<0.001). In the whole-region analyses, TOF-MRA had higher sensitivity [99.1% (94.6-100.0%) vs. 82.9% (74.6-89.0%), P<0.001] and similar specificity [93.1% (85.0-97.1%) vs. 94.3% (86.5-97.9%), P=0.755] than CDUS. The per-region-based analyses showed that TOF-MRA yielded higher sensitivity [fistula region, 98.1% (88.4-99.9%) vs. 80.8% (67.0-89.9%); P=0.004; draining vein region, 100.0% (92.5-100.0%) vs. 85.0% (72.9-2.5%); P=0.003] and similar specificity [fistula region, 88.2% (62.3-97.8%) vs. 88.2% (62.3-97.9%); P>0.99; draining vein region, 100.0% (59.8-100.0%) vs. 87.5% (46.7-99.3%); P>0.99] than CDUS. Sensitivity and specificity of TOF-MRA were comparable to those of CDUS in feeding artery region. Conclusions: TOF-MRA is a feasible and accurate method to display AVF dysfunction in hemodialysis patients, and this method might fulfill the endovascular treatment planning requirements.

BACKGROUND: Proper lower limb alignment and soft tissue balance are significant indicators to measure the success of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Previous studies have confirmed that soft tissue relaxation around the knee after TKA will change over time; however, the relationship between lower limb alignment and soft tissue balance after TKA remains unclear. We studied (1) whether the change of soft tissue balance around the knee with time after posterior-stabilized (PS) TKA would affect the alignment of the lower limbs; (2) Whether the accuracy of lower limb alignment during PS TKA affects postoperative soft tissue remodeling. METHODS: In this study, 100 patients were recruited after PS TKA. Among them, 50 patients with a hip knee ankle (HKA) angle of ≤ ± 3° were set as the neutral group, and 50 patients with an HKA angle of > ± 3° were set as the deviation group. The imaging results measured the HKA angle before the operation as well as the HKA, varus, and valgus angles at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after TKA. Clinical assessment included range of motion (ROM), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), and Knee Society Score (KSS). RESULTS: Eight people were excluded from the study. After the exclusion, the study enrolled 47 patients in the neutral group and 45 patients in the deviant group and were followed for up to 2 years. There was no statistical significance in mean varus angles as well as HKA angle changes during the follow-up phase of each groups (P > 0.05). The mean valgus angles of the patients in the neutral group group were 2.47°, 3.45°, 3.63°, 3.60° and 3.63°, and in the deviation group were 2.45° (P = 0.841), 2.88° (P < 0.001), 3.07° (P < 0.001), 3.06° (P < 0.001), and 3.10° (P < 0.001). ROM, WOMAC and KSS of the two groups were significantly improved after operation, with no difference between the two groups. CONCLUSION: This study shows that whether the alignment is accurate or not in the early stage after TKA, the relaxation of the medial and lateral soft tissues of the knee joint change; however, this change will not significantly affect the alignment of the lower limbs. Postoperative residual varus deformity limits medial soft tissue remodeling. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic disease of the bones and joints that commonly affects middle-aged and elderly individuals, characterized by the degeneration of articular cartilage and inflammation of the joints. The molecular mechanisms of OA urgently need to be further examined. Our study intended to uncover circ-NFKB1/miR-203a-5p/ERBB4 axis in regulating interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) induced chondrocytes apoptosis. METHODS: GSE178724, GSE79258 and GSE169077 were downloaded from Gene Expression Omibus (GEO) database and differentially expressed circRNAs, miRNAs and mRNAs were obtained by R software. Annexin V assay was used to determine cell apoptosis rate. ELISA was further performed to identify the inflammation response. Dual-luciferase reporter gene assay was conducted to examine the combination among circ-NFKB1, miR-203a-5p and ERBB4. RESULTS: Our research demonstrated that circ-NFKB1 and ERBB4 were significantly upregulated through bioinformatic analysis. MiR-203a-5p was significantly downregulated through bioinformatic analysis. Silencing of circ-NFKB1 notably inhibited the IL-1ß induced chondrocytes apoptosis and upregulated ERBB4 expression. Through prediction on bioinformatics analysis, miR-203a-5p was the target binding circ-NFKB1, and ERBB4 was the potential target of miR-203a-5p. Subsequently, these changes induced by the silencing of circ-NFKB1 were reversed upon addition of pcDNA/ERBB4. CONCLUSIONS: Silencing circ-NFKB1 could sponge miR-203a-5p to regulate ERBB4 expression and alleviate OA progression.

The ultralow friction of two-dimensional (2D) materials, commonly referred to as superlubricity, has been associated with Moiré superlattices (MSLs). While MSLs have been shown to play a crucial role in achieving superlubricity, the long-standing challenge of achieving superlubricity in engineering has been attributed to surface roughness, which tends to destroy MSLs. Here, we show via molecular dynamics simulations that MSLs alone are not capable of capturing the friction behavior of a multilayer-graphene-coated substrate where similar MSLs persist in spite of significant changes in friction as the graphene coating thickness increases. To resolve this problem, a deformation coupled contact pattern is constructed to describe the spatial distribution of the atomic contact distance. It is shown that as the graphene thickness increases, the interfacial contact distance is determined by a competition between increased interfacial MSLs interactions and reduced out-of-plane deformation of the surface. A frictional Fourier transform model is further proposed to distinguish between intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to friction, with results showing that thicker graphene coatings exhibit lower intrinsic friction and higher sliding stability. These results shed light on the origin of interfacial superlubricity in 2D materials and may guide related applications in engineering.

BACKGROUND: Tissue remodeling is a prominent characteristic of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Excess deposition of fibronectin (FN) and collagen (Col) I by fibroblasts is crucial for the pathologic tissue remodeling in CRS without nasal polyps (CRSsNP). Increased interleukin (IL)-19 level in patients with CRS had been demonstrated in our previous studies. Here, we aimed to evaluate the role of IL-19 in mediating FN and Col I expression in CRS. METHODS: Nasal mucosal tissue samples were collected from patients with CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), CRSsNP, and controls. The expression of IL-19, vimentin, FN, and Col I were detected using immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. Primary human nasal fibroblasts were treated with IL-19, then the activation of Smad2/3, NF-κB and relevant pathways, and the expression of FN and Col I were measured. RESULTS: Expression levels of vimentin, FN, and Col I were significantly increased in nasal tissues from patients with CRSsNP compared with CRSwNP and control subjects. Moreover, IL-19 co-localized with FN and Col Ι in nasal tissues. IL-19-treated fibroblasts had increased production of FN and Col I, which was associated with the activated Smad2/3 and NF-κB pathways. Moreover, Smad2/3 activation was mediated by the NF-κB pathway in IL-19-treated fibroblasts. CONCLUSIONS: IL-19 promotes FN and Col I production via the activated NF-κB-Smad2/3 pathway in fibroblasts, leading to fibrosis and collagen deposition in patients with CRS.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical results of the direct anterior approach (DAA) and posterolateral approach (PLA) in total hip arthroplasty (THA) patients. METHODS: From January 2017 to September 2019, 80 patients who received primary THA in our hospital were retrospectively selected based on the propensity score matching (PSM) method. Baseline characteristics of patients who underwent the DAA and PLA were collected. Moreover, the incision length, intraoperative blood loss, operative time, length of stay, and Harris hip score were compared between patients in the two groups. The CK level was used to assess muscle damage between patients in the DAA and PLA groups. The complications of these two approaches were also evaluated at patients' 12-month follow-up evaluation. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in baseline characteristics between patients in the two groups (p > 0.05). The patients in the DAA group had a shorter incision length (9.2 ± 0.2 vs 14.7 ± 0.5, respectively; p < 0.05) and shorter length of hospital stay (9.5 ± 0.7 vs 12.9 ± 0.8, respectively, p < 0.05) than patients in the PLA group. Moreover, the DAA was associated with a decrease in intraoperative blood loss compared with the PLA (109.1 ± 12.6 vs 305.1 ± 14.1 ml, respectively, p < 0.05). However, the operation time was longer in patients in the DAA group (130.7 ± 1.7) than in patients in the PLA group (112.6 ± 1.3 min, p < 0.05). The CK level of patients in the DAA group was lower than that of patients in the PLA group (p < 0.05). The CK level at 48 h post-surgery was negatively correlated with the Harris hip scores at 6 months after THA (r = -0.538, p = 0.000). Compared with patients in the PLA group, the muscle strength of patients in the DAA group was significantly higher than that of patients in the DAA group at 4 days (p < 0.05) and 7 days (p < 0.05) after THA. The Harris hip scores of patients in the DAA group and PLA group were 81.0 ± 0.8 vs 70.8 ± 0.7 at 6 weeks, 93.4 ± 0.9 vs 86.4 ± 0.6 at 3 months, and 96.8 ± 1.1 vs 93.4 ± 0.8 at 6 months, respectively, both p < 0.05. There was no significant difference in the incidence of complications between patients in the DAA and PLA groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: DAA was superior to the PLA in improving hip function after THA. Compared with the PLA, the DAA could reduce muscle damage, which is negatively correlated with hip function. Further multi-institution studies are required with longer follow-up durations, and larger patient populations are needed to provide more definitive conclusions.

The frictional properties of a uniaxial tensile strained graphene interface are studied using molecular dynamics simulations. A misfit interval statistical method (MISM) is applied to characterize the atomistic misfits at the interface and strain soliton pattern. During sliding along both armchair and zigzag directions, the lateral force depends on the ratio of graphene flake length (L) to strain soliton spacing (Ls) and becomes nearly zero when L is an integer multiple of 3Ls. Furthermore, the strain solitons propagate along the armchair sliding direction dynamically, while fission and fusion are repeatedly evidenced along the zigzag sliding direction. The underlying superlubric mechanism is revealed by a single-atom quasi-static model. The cancellation of lateral force for the contacting atoms exhibits a dynamic balance when sliding along the armchair direction but a quasi-static balance along the zigzag direction. A diagram of flake length with respect to tensile strain (L-ε) is proposed to predict the critical condition for the transition from nonsuperlubricity to superlubricity. Our results provide insights on the design of superlubric devices.

BACKGROUND: Pyroptosis is closely related to inflammation. However, the molecular mechanisms and pathologic contributions of pyroptotic epithelial cell are not yet fully understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the function and molecular mechanisms of IL-17A on human nasal epithelial cell (hNEC) pyroptosis. METHODS: The expression of pyroptosis-related biomarkers and IL-17A was assessed in sinonasal mucosa from control individuals, patients with chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps, and patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) by using quantitative RT-PCR. Their localization was analyzed via immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. The ultrastructural characteristics of IL-17A-induced pyroptosis in hNECs were visualized by using electron microscopy. IL-17A functional assays were performed on hNECs and airway epithelial cell lines. Cytokine levels were quantified via ELISA. The signaling pathways involved in IL-17A-induced pyroptosis were studied via unbiased RNA sequencing and Western blotting. RESULTS: The expression of IL-17A and the pyroptotic biomarkers NOD-like receptor family, pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3), caspase-1, gasdermin D, and IL-1ß was increased in nasal mucosa from patients with CRSwNP compared with in those with chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps and the control subjects. IL-17A was positively correlated and colocalized with the pyroptotic biomarkers. IL-17A treatment induced pyroptosis in the hNECs and cell lines analyzed, primarily through the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)-NLRP3/caspase-1 signaling pathway, and increased IL-1ß and IL-18 secretion in hNECs. Moreover, IL-17A-induced pyroptosis contributed to steroid resistance by affecting glucocorticoid receptor-α and glucocorticoid receptor-ß expression, and the inhibition of pyroptotic proteins partially abolished IL-17A-induced steroid resistance in hNECs. CONCLUSION: Elevated IL-17A level promotes pyroptosis in hNECs through the ERK-NLRP3/caspase-1 signaling pathway and contributes to glucocorticoid resistance by affecting glucocorticoid receptor homeostasis in patients with CRSwNP.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the application value of liquid crystal digital display goniometer in total hip arthroplasty. METHODS: From January 2018 to December 2019, 83 patients underwent primary total hip arthroplasty, including 28 males and 55 females, aged 42 to 81 (70.4±7.9) years. There were 63 cases of femoral neck fracture and 20 cases of avascular necrosis of femoral head. All patients used liquid crystal digital goniometer to control the anteversion of acetabular cup prosthesis during operation, and CT scanning was used to measure the anteversion of acetabular cup after operation. The two methods were compared to understand the accuracy of using liquid crystal digital goniometer. RESULTS: Postoperative CT measurement showed that the acetabular anteversion of all patients was in the safe area advocated by Lewinnek. The anteversion angle of acetabular cup measured by liquid crystal digital goniometer was 14.20(12.80 to 15.40)°, and the anteversion angle of acetabular cup measured by postoperative CT scan was 14.20 (13.40 to 15.50)°. There was no significant difference between the two (Z=-1.725, P=0.085). CONCLUSION: It is an accurate and reliable method to control the anteversion of acetabular cup with liquid crystal digital display angle instrument, which has a good auxiliary reference value.

BACKGROUND: Patellar mobilization technique during total knee replacement (TKR) has been debated, with some suggesting that lateral retraction, rather than eversion, of the patella may be beneficial. This randomized controlled trial was to investigate the effects of patellar eversion on functional outcomes in TKR. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This single-center, prospective, randomized controlled test will be conducted in Jingjiang People's Hospital. Primary end-stage osteoarthritis patients that prepared for unilateral TKR were randomized to one of two patellar exposure techniques during the primary total knee arthroplasty: lateral retraction or eversion. The informed consent will be acquired in each patient. The primary outcome was operation time, length of hospital stay, and straight leg raising time. Second outcomes including Insall-Salvati ratio; range of motion at 1 month, 3 months, and 1 year following TKR; visual analog scale (VAS) at 1 month, 3 months; and Knee Society Score (KSS) score at 1 year following TKR. The significance level was defaulted as P < .05. RESULTS: Results will be published in relevant peer-reviewed journals. CONCLUSION: Our study aims to systematically assess the functional outcomes of patellar eversion for TKR patients, which will provide clinical guidance for TKR patients.

α-Phosphorus carbide (α-PC) shares a similar puckered structure with black phosphorus and has a high carrier mobility, showing great application potential in the future nano-electronic devices. Based on first-principles calculations, we reveal that an interlayer twist angle of 90° results in a symmetric band dispersion and spatial separation of electronic states in the α-PC bilayer, leading to isotropic electrical transport. Nevertheless, the anisotropic electronic states can be rebooted by introducing an out-of-plane electrostatic potential or an in-plane deformation potential, both of which can break the energy degeneracy and continuously modulate the bandgap of the 90° twisted bilayer. This highly tunable band structure can also induce a directionally exchangeable optical linear dichroism by flipping the voltage sign or changing the strain mode. These results indicate that the combination of the interlayer twist and gating/strain technique provides great flexibility to control the anisotropic behaviors in 2D puckered materials.

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty is a common surgery for end-stage of knee osteoarthritis. Proprioceptive training has become an important part in athletes training programmes in different sports. However, the effects of proprioceptive training on the recovery of total knee arthroplasty were unknown. This meta-analysis, with its comprehensive and rigorous methodology, will provide better insight into this problem. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Electronic databases including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database, Wanfang Database and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) were searched from its inception to October 21, 2020. We only included proprioceptive training vs placebo in patients after total knee arthroplasty and pooled results were summarized by STATA 12.0 software. Two researchers independently selected the study and assessed the quality of the included studies. The heterogeneity was measured by I2 tests (I2 < 50 indicates little heterogeneity, I2 ≥ 50 indicates high heterogeneity). Publication bias was ruled out by funnel plot and statistically assessed by Beggs test (P > .05 as no publication bias). RESULTS: Results will be published in relevant peer-reviewed journals. CONCLUSION: Our study aims to systematically present the clinical effects of proprioceptive training after total knee arthroplasty patients, which will be provide clinical guidance for total knee arthroplasty patients.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common arthritic disease in humans, affecting the majority of individuals over 65 years of age. The aim of this study is to identify the gene expression profile specific to subchondral bone in OA by comparing the different expression profiles in experimental and sham-operation groups. METHODS: Gene expression profile GSE30322 was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained by limma package. And Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery (DAVID) databases were further used to identify the potential gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways. Furthermore, a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed and significant modules were extracted. RESULTS: Totally, 588 DEGs were identified including 199 upregulated DEGs and 389 downregulated DEGs screened in OA and sham-operation. GO showed that DEGs were significantly enhanced for ribosomal subunit export from nucleus and molting cycle. KEGG pathway analysis revealed that target genes were enriched in thiamine metabolism. CONCLUSION: These key candidate DEGs that affect the progression of OA, and these genes might serve as potential therapeutic targets for OA.

Radioresistance was the main reason for local recurrence and metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Tetrandrine is reported as an antitumor drug via inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. In this study, the radiosensitization effects of maximum noncytotoxic doses of tetrandrine in nasopharyngeal carcinoma were analyzed both in vitro and in vivo, using MTT assay, western blot, TUNEL, and HE staining. It was found that the maximum dose of tetrandrine inhibited the phosphorylation of ERK and MEK induced by irradiation, and significantly enhanced irradiation-induced cell growth inhibition in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells CNE1, CNE2, and C666-1. The ERK activator and overexpression of ERK reversed the radiosensitization effect of tetrandrine. About 50 mg/kg of tetrandrine which was used as the maximum noncytotoxic dose of tetrandrine in vivo, enhanced the radiosensitivity of the xenograft tumor and increased the apoptosis rate of the xenograft tumor cells caused by irradiation, while did not raise the side effect of the treatment. Moreover, tetrandrine increased autophagy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells. These results suggested that the maximum noncytotoxic dose of tetrandrine sensitized nasopharyngeal carcinoma to irradiation by inhibiting MEK/ERK pathway and inducing autophagy.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of cnidium lactone on ovariectomy (OVX)-induced bone loss and determine whether it exerts its effects by mediating the estrogen receptor-α (ERα)/bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2)/Smad signaling pathways. METHODS: Fifty-five female rats were randomly assigned to the following treatment groups: the OVX group, the sham-operated (sham) group, and groups treated with cnidium lactone at different doses (10 mg/kg/day, 20 mg/kg/day, 30 mg/kg/day). Treatments were administered for 60 days. Search Tool for Interacting Chemicals (STITCH; http://stitch.embl.de) was used to identify the interaction between cnidium lactone and target proteins. Bone mineral density (BMD), mechanical strength, serum osteoblastic and osteoclastic markers, and hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining of the distal femur were evaluated. Moreover, western blot analyses were also performed to evaluate the effect of cnidium lactone on the ERα/BMP-2/Smad signaling pathway. RESULTS: Cnidium lactone treatment was associated with an increase in the BMD of the distal femur compared to that of the OVX group. Moreover, cnidium lactone significantly increased biomechanical properties in a dose-dependent manner compared to those of the OVX group (p < 0.05). Treatment with cnidium lactone significantly enhanced the BMP-2/Smad signaling pathway by up-regulating the expression of ERα, BMP-2, p-Smad1 and p-Smad4. Cnidium lactone treatment improved the microstructure of trabecular bone in the distal femurs of OVX rats, as shown by HE staining. CONCLUSIONS: Cnidium lactone exerts potent antiosteoporotic activity in ovariectomized mice, and the underlying molecular mechanism may be related to the ERα/BMP-2/Smad signaling pathways.

BACKGROUND: This meta-analysis aimed to explore the efficacy and safety of rituximab combined with methotrexate (MTX) versus MTX alone in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: We performed an electronic search of PubMed (1950-January 2018), EMBASE (1974-January 2018), the Cochrane Library (January 2018 Issue 3), the Google database (1950-January 2018), and the Chinese Wanfang database (1950-January 2018). Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. The American College of Rheumatology 20% improvement criteria (ACR20), ACR50, ACR70, total complication rate, and infection rate were the outcomes. A fixed/random effects model was used according to the heterogeneity assessed by the I statistic. Data analysis was performed using Stata 12.0 software. RESULTS: A total of five RCTs with 3299 patients (rituximab combined with MTX group = 1787, MTX only group = 1512) were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled risk ratio showed that the administration of rituximab combined with MTX was associated with more ACR20, ACR50, and ACR70 than the administration of MTX only (P < .05). There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of the total complication rate and the infection rate (P > .05). CONCLUSION: The administration of rituximab combined with MTX was effective and safe for RA patients. Additional high-quality RCTs with long-term follow-ups should be conducted in the future to identify the potential complications in the long term.

BACKGROUND: The direct anterior approach for total hip arthroplasty (THA) has specific advantages, but injury to the tensor fasciae lata muscle (TFLM) remains a concern. This injury in part negates some of the advantages of the intermuscular approach, because injury of the muscle fibers of the TFLM can lead to less satisfactory clinical results. Thus, in this study, we propose an intraoperative method to protect the TFLM and demonstrate its feasibility. METHODS: Fifty-six patients undergoing THA by the direct anterior approach were divided randomly into two groups. In group A, the TFLM was protected by an autogenous tissue "pad" created from the anterior capsule of the joint which protect the TFLM from direct contact with the retractors. In group B, the operation was carried out with no protection of the TFLM except the attempt by the surgeons to consciously avoid injury of the TFLM. We evaluated magnitude of changes in the muscle cross-sectional area (MSCA) and fatty atrophy (FA) by magnetic resonance imaging. The differences in blood hemoglobin and serum levels of myoglobin, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and creatine phosphokinase (CPK) were compared at different time, postoperatively. The Harris hip score, postoperative drainage volume and visual analogue scores (VAS) were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: LDH, CPK and myoglobin in group B were significantly higher than group A at 8, 24, and 48 h after the surgery. (p < 0.05) Compared to the group A, the decrease of hemoglobin in group B displayed significantly at 24 and 48 h after surgery. (P < 0.05) The significantly increased MSCA and FA of TFLM were demonstrated in group B. The PDV and VAS in group B were significantly higher than group A. (P < 0.05) The Harris score in group A was significantly higher than group B (P < 0.05) one month after surgery, but there was no significant difference six months later. CONCLUSIONS: Using the anterior capsule of the hip joint as an autogenous, protective capsular tissue pad to limit the trauma to the TFLM during a direct anterior approach to THA is an effective method to protect the TFLM and improve the clinical effect. Graphene oxide (GO) could be assembled via amphiphilic interface adhesion into nano-composites. The deformation behaviors and mechanical properties of the composites are sensitive to the functional species absorbed on GO, which are investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that the ultimate stress and elastic modulus decreases greatly as the density of function groups absorbed on GO increase from 10% to 50%, but independent on the group type of hydroxide or epoxide ones. Fracture of GO is always initiated and preferentially propagated along the path on which hydroxide or epoxide groups are distributed. Essentially, hydroxide or epoxide groups will weaken the adjacent C-C bonds and induce structure transformation from honeycomb to diamond-like structure as result of hybridization transition from sp2 to sp3. The findings provide us a guidance for the design of GO based composites.
