Molecular characterization of isolates of waterborne Cryptosporidium spp. collected during an outbreak of gastroenteritis in South Burgundy, France.

In September 2001, a waterborne outbreak of gastroenteritis occurred in eastern France. Of 31 fecal samples from symptomatic individuals, 19 tested positive for Cryptosporidium with two PCRs targeting the Hsp70 and the 18S rRNA genes of CRYPTOSPORIDIUM: Sequencing of the PCR fragments produced sequences identical to that of Cryptosporidium parvum genotype 1.

[Isolated pleural actinomycosis. Apropos of 2 cases]. / Actinomycose pleurale isolée. A propos de 2 observations.

Two cases of isolated pleural actinomycosis are reported. This form is much less frequent than the pulmonary form, and it accounts for only 20% of thoracic actinomycoses. The bacteriological diagnosis is easily obtainable by pleural puncture, provided it has not been obscured by previous antibiotic therapy and provided the organism has systematically been cultured under anaerobic conditions. Pleural actinomycosis has a very favourable prognosis. Local treatment, sometimes surgical, is indispensable. If the condition is diagnosed at an early stage, systemic antibiotic therapy can be reduced to 6 to 12 weeks.

[Modification of aerobic digestive flora in patients in intensive care during and after treatment with cefmenoxime]. / Modifications des flores digestives aérobies de malades de réanimation pendant et après un traitment par cefménoxime.

To evaluate the resistant strains selection during treatment with cefmenoxime, a 3rd generation cephalosporin, 10 adult inpatients of an intensive-care unit had quantitative stool cultures, before the treatment, on the 7-10th day of therapy, and 7-10 days after the end of the antibiotic course. The results show that the selecting effect of cefmenoxime is not different from the effect previously observed for cefotaxime.
