RESUMEN

The broadnose sevengill shark, Notorynchus cepedianus (Péron, 1807), is a large marine top predator in temperate coastal ecosystems. Some aspects of its life history have been determined, but its growth pattern is yet to be fully understood. The authors used a multi-modelling approach and a sensitivity test to estimate growth parameters from young-of-year (YOY) length data collected off San Antonio Cape (SAC), Argentina, a critical habitat in the Southwest Atlantic Coastal Zone (SACZ). The best selected model, a sex-combined logistic growth model, estimated an asymptotic length (L∞ ) of 92.58 cm TL (95% C.I.: 86.48-105.89 cm), a growth coefficient (K) of 0.006818 days -1 (95% C.I.: 0.004948-0.008777) and a size at birth (L0 ) of 40.73 cm. The predicted annual growth (i.e., L1 - L0 ) was 43.2 cm TL. Males had smaller L0 , higher K and achieved larger sizes after 1 year. The YOY in SAC attained a larger L1 and grew faster than their Australian and South African wild counterparts. The consistent year-round presence of YOY in the SAC highlights the importance of this area as a pupping ground and potential nursery for N. cepedianus; this has direct implications for the allocation of research and management effort for the conservation of this species in the Southwest Atlantic.

Abstract Microturbellarians typically belong to the benthos and may occur in a wide variety of environments. They are abundant in freshwater and marine ecosystems and may occur in moist terrestrial habitats. However, turbellarians are seldom taken into account in studies of biodiversity. Most studies on Brazilian microturbellarians had taxonomical purposes and were done in the years 1940-1950. Thus, information on their occurrence and ecological aspects are dispersed throughout several papers. We intend here to summarize the biogeographical distribution and ecological aspects of microturbellarians recorded for Brazil, indicating the main gaps in their knowledge and possible actions to enhance studies on this group. There are 239 species of microturbellarians registered for Brazil, with records distributed in 12 states. However, just three states located in southern Brazil have records of 94% of microturbellarian species. Thus, knowledge on the systematics and geographical distribution of Brazilian microturbellarians clearly reflect the scientific activity over many years or decades in two states of southeastern and southern Brazil. Considering the scant information on this group in Brazil, which is also the situation of the Neotropical microturbellarians in general, some actions should be proposed. First, it would be necessary to sample in the diverse biomes, as well as in the various river and sea basins, based on standardized sampling protocols. Second, it would be necessary to encourage diverse research groups to include microturbellarians and/or turbellarians in general into biodiversity inventories and studies on community structure of invertebrates. Third, it is necessary to increase the number of research groups on microturbellarians, in order to augment the studies on their morphology, systematics, and ecology. Considering their abundance, species richness and ecological importance in aquatic environments, despite some peculiarities regarding their sampling, sorting and identification procedures, the challenge to study microturbellarians and enhance knowledge about them in Brazilian ecosystems should be faced.


Resumo Microturbelários são tipicamente bentônicos e podem ocorrer em uma ampla variedade de ambientes. São abundantes em ecossistemas marinhos e de água doce, podendo ocorrer em ambientes terrestres úmidos. Entretanto, turbelários raramente são considerados em estudos de diversidade. A maioria dos estudos sobre microturbelários brasileiros tiveram propósito taxonômico e foram realizados nos anos 1940-1950. Assim, informações sobre ocorrência e aspectos ecológicos estão dispersos em diversos artigos. O objetivo deste trabalho é sumarizar a distribuição biogeográfica e aspectos ecológicos dos microturbelários registrados para o Brasil, indicando as principais lacunas do conhecimento e possíveis ações para ampliar estudos sobre esse grupo. Há 239 espécies de microturbelários registradas no Brasil, com registros distribuídos em 12 estados. No entanto, 94% das espécies de microturbelários foram registradas em apenas três estados localizados no sul e sudeste do Brasil. Assim, o conhecimento sobre a sistemática e distribuição geográfica dos microturbelários claramente reflete as atividades científicas realizadas por muitos anos ou mesmo décadas em dois estados do sudeste e sul do Brasil. Considerando as escassas informações existentes sobre esse grupo no Brasil, assim como a situação dos microturbelários neotropicais em geral, algumas ações devem ser propostas. Primeiramente, é necessário realizar amostragens em diversos biomas, assim como nas várias bacias e regiões hidrográficas marinhas, baseadas em protocolos de amostragem padronizados. Em segundo lugar, faz-se necessário incentivar diversos grupos de pesquisa a incluir microturbelários e/ou turbelários em geral em inventários da biodiversidade e estudos de estrutura de comunidades de invertebrados. Em terceiro lugar, é necessário ampliar o número de grupos de pesquisa em microturbelários, para aumentar os estudos sobre sua morfologia, sistemática e ecologia. Considerando sua abundância, riqueza de espécies e importância ecológica em ambientes aquáticos, apesar de suas peculiaridades de amostragem, triagem e identificação, o desafio de estudar e ampliar o conhecimento sobre microturbelários em ecossistemas brasileiros deve ser enfrentado.

The study assesses the need for and effectiveness of using ridge regression when estimating regression coefficients of covariates representing genetic effects due to breed proportion in a crossbreed genetic evaluation. It also compares 2 ways of selecting the ridge parameters. A large crossbred Angus × Nellore population with 294,045 records for weaning gain and 148,443 records for postweaning gain was used. Phenotypic visual scores varying from 1 to 5 for weaning and postweaning conformation, weaning and postweaning precocity, weaning and postweaning muscling, and scrotal circumference were analyzed. Three models were used to assess the need for ridge regression, having 4, 6, and 8 genetic covariates. All 3 models included the fixed contemporary group effect and random animal, maternal, and permanent environment effects. Model AH included fixed direct and maternal breed additive and the direct and maternal heterosis covariates, model AHE also included direct and maternal epistatic loss covariates, and model AHEC further included direct and maternal complementarity effects. The normal approach is to include these covariates as fixed effects in the model. However, being all derived from breed proportions, they are highly collinear and, consequently, may be poorly estimated. Ridge regression has been proposed as a method of reducing the collinearity. We found that collinearity was not a problem for models AH and AHE. We found a high variance inflation factor, >20, associated with some maternal covariates in the AHEC model reflecting instability of the regression coefficients and that this instability was well addressed by using ridge regression using a ridge parameter calculated from the variance inflation factor.

Capture-mark-recapture models are useful tools for estimating demographic parameters but often result in low precision when recapture rates are low. Low recapture rates are typical in many study systems including fishing-based studies. Incorporating auxiliary data into the models can improve precision and in some cases enable parameter estimation. Here, we present a novel application of acoustic telemetry for the estimation of apparent survival and abundance within capture-mark-recapture analysis using open population models. Our case study is based on simultaneously collecting longline fishing and acoustic telemetry data for a large mobile apex predator, the broadnose sevengill shark (Notorhynchus cepedianus), at a coastal site in Tasmania, Australia. Cormack-Jolly-Seber models showed that longline data alone had very low recapture rates while acoustic telemetry data for the same time period resulted in at least tenfold higher recapture rates. The apparent survival estimates were similar for the two datasets but the acoustic telemetry data showed much greater precision and enabled apparent survival parameter estimation for one dataset, which was inestimable using fishing data alone. Combined acoustic telemetry and longline data were incorporated into Jolly-Seber models using a Monte Carlo simulation approach. Abundance estimates were comparable to those with longline data only; however, the inclusion of acoustic telemetry data increased precision in the estimates. We conclude that acoustic telemetry is a useful tool for incorporating in capture-mark-recapture studies in the marine environment. Future studies should consider the application of acoustic telemetry within this framework when setting up the study design and sampling program.

The large size, high trophic level and wide distribution of Hexanchiformes (cow and frilled sharks) should position this order as important apex predators in coastal and deep-water ecosystems. This review synthesizes available information on Hexanchiformes, including information not yet published, with the purpose of evaluating their conservation status and assessing their ecological roles in the dynamics of marine ecosystems. Comprising six species, this group has a wide global distribution, with members occurring from shallow coastal areas to depths of c. 2500 m. The limited information available on their reproductive biology suggests that they could be vulnerable to overexploitation (e.g. small litter sizes for most species and suspected long gestation periods). Most of the fishing pressure exerted on Hexanchiformes is in the form of commercial by-catch or recreational fishing. Comprehensive stock and impact assessments are unavailable for most species in most regions due to limited information on life history and catch and abundance time series. When hexanchiform species have been commercially harvested, however, they have been unable to sustain targeted fisheries for long periods. The potentially high vulnerability to intense fishing pressure warrants a conservative exploitation of this order until thorough quantitative assessments are conducted. At least some species have been shown to be significant apex predators in the systems they inhabit. Should Hexanchiformes be removed from coastal and deep-water systems, the lack of sympatric shark species that share the same resources suggests no other species would be capable of fulfilling their apex predator role in the short term. This has potential ecosystem consequences such as meso-predator release or trophic cascades. This review proposes some hypotheses on the ecology of Hexanchiformes and their role in ecosystem dynamics, highlighting the areas where critical information is required to stimulate research directions.
