RESUMEN

This paper reports the sol-gel synthesis of Al2O3-Nd2O3 (Al-Nd-x; x = 5%, 10%, 15% and 25% of Nd2O3) binary oxides and the photodegradation of diclofenac activated by UV light. Al-Nd-based catalysts were analyzed by N2 physisorption, XRD, TEM, SEM, UV-Vis and PL spectroscopies. The inclusion of Nd2O3 in the aluminum oxide matrix in the 10-25% range reduced the band gap energies from 3.35 eV for the γ-Al2O3 to values as low as 3.13-3.20 eV, which are typical of semiconductor materials absorbing in the UV region. γ-Al2O3 and Al-Nd-x binary oxides reached more than 92.0% of photoconverted diclofenac after 40 min of reaction. However, the photocatalytic activity in the diclofenac degradation using Al-Nd-x with Nd2O3 contents in the range 10-25% was improved with respect to that of γ-Al2O3 at short reaction times. The diclofenac photoconversion using γ-Al2O3 was 63.0% at 10 min of UV light exposure, whereas Al-Nd-15 binary oxide reached 82.0% at this reaction time. The rate constants determined from the kinetic experiments revealed that the highest activities in the aqueous medium were reached with the catalysts with 15% and 25% of Nd2O3, and these compounds presented the lowest band gap energies. The experimental results also demonstrated that Nd2O3 acts as a separator of charges favoring the decrease in the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs.

Zinc/aluminum layered double hydroxide (LDH) particles were prepared by alkaline precipitation in the presence of dysprosium and dysprosium/gadolinium cations. The particles formed were stable against exchange reactions with folate or glucuronate ions since these organic ions exclusively functionalized the external surface of the layered double hydroxides. While the dysprosium derivatives reached magnetization susceptibilities between 2.06 × 10-5 and 2.20 × 10-5 cm3/g, the samples simultaneously containing dysprosium and gadolinium decreased to a range between 1.08 × 10-5 and 1.73 × 10-5 cm3/g. This last sample was tested as a magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent and demonstrated a reduction in T1 and T2 relaxation times in a linear dependence with the LDH concentration. The oxidative stress assays in rat liver mitochondria demonstrated the low toxicity of the composition simultaneously containing dysprosium and gadolinium as well as the functionalization product with glucuronate ions, suggesting the potential of these particles to design alternative MRI contrast agents.

The antineoplasic activity of gallic acid has been reported. This compound induces apoptosis and inhibits the growth of several neoplasic cells. However, this molecule is easily oxidized and degraded in the body. The aim of this work was to intercalate gallate ions into layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles under controlled conditions to reduce oxidation of gallate and to evaluate its toxicity against the A549 adenocarcinoma cell line. An isopropanol medium under nitrogen atmosphere was adequate to intercalate gallate ions with a lesser oxidation degree as detected by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Concentrations of the hybrid LDH-gallate nanoparticles between 0.39 and 25 µg/mL reduced the cell viability to 67%, while the value reached with the pure gallic acid and LDH was 90% and 78%, respectively, thus proving that the combination of gallate ions with the inorganic nanoparticles increases the toxicity potential within this dose range.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) stabilized by imidazolium salts derived from amino acids [glycine (1), rac-alanine (2), l-phenylalanine (3), and rac-methionine (4)] were prepared. The AuNPs were stabilized the most by 4, which kept the particles dispersed in water for months at pH > 5.5. These AuNPs exhibited a well-defined absorption band at 517 nm and had an average particle size of 11.21 ± 0.07 nm. The 4-AuNPs were reversibly aggregated by controlling the pH of the solution. Chiral R,R-4-AuNPs and S,S-4-AuNPs were synthesized, and the chiral environment on the nanoparticle surface was confirmed using circular dichroism; these nanoparticles exhibited a molecular recognition of chiral substrates. Furthermore, they showed potential for separating racemic mixtures when supported on a layered double hydroxide.

The development of probes for biomedical applications demands materials with low toxicity levels besides fluorescence or magnetic properties to be detected by confocal microscopes or MRI resonators. Several drug delivery systems or other biomedical materials prepared with hydroxyapatite have been proposed, however, toxicity effects might arise when the size of particles is nanometric. In this study, hydroxyapatite functionalized with glucuronic or folic acids presented lower oxidative stress, measured from lipoperoxides and nitric oxide indicators in rats than pure hydroxyapatite. In separated experiments, hydroxyapatite was doped with dysprosium cations by coprecipitation producing a single crystal phase with fluorescent properties easily visualized by confocal microscopy when excited at 488nm. These particles also presented the ability to modify the proton relaxation time in T1 maps collected by magnetic resonance imaging. These modified hydroxyapatite nanoparticles could be candidates to design bimodal probes with low toxicity.
