RESUMEN

Genetically improved cultivars of elephant grass need to be adapted to different ecosystems with a faster growth speed and lower seasonality of biomass production over the year. This study aimed to use selection indices using mixed models (REML/BLUP) for selecting families and progenies within full-sib families of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) for biomass production. One hundred and twenty full-sib progenies were assessed from 2014 to 2015 in a randomized block design with three replications. During this period, the traits dry matter production, the number of tillers, plant height, stem diameter, and neutral detergent fiber were assessed. Families 3 and 1 were the best classified, being the most indicated for selection effect. Progenies 40, 45, 46, and 49 got the first positions in the three indices assessed in the first cut. The gain for individual 40 was 161.76% using Mulamba and Mock index. The use of selection indices using mixed models is advantageous in elephant grass since they provide high gains with the selection, which are distributed among all the assessed traits in the most appropriate situation to breeding programs.

RESUMEN

The results of a prospective controlled study designed to evaluate the performance of a computerized diagnostic aid in the clinical setting are reported herein. Two hundred and fifty patients referred to an outpatient clinic for gastrointestinal complaints were entered into the study. The diagnostic aid program was used routinely and the findings elicited from patients' medical histories and physical examinations were entered into the computer at the time of initial evaluation. The accuracy of the program's diagnoses was measured and compared with the accuracy of diagnoses made by a control group of physicians. The overall diagnostic accuracy of the program was found to be 69.2% (P much less than .0000001), a value significantly greater (P = .0005) than the overall accuracy of the control group of physicians, which was found to be 52%. A high agreement rate between program and physicians was also observed. These preliminary results seem to indicate a practical use for the program as a support in the initial screening of patients presenting with gastrointestinal complaints.

RESUMEN

Assessment of the integrity of the ductal system of the pancreas after a penetrating injury is mandatory and can prevent potentially fatal complications. The authors report a case in which the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was employed intraoperatively to carry out such assessment after a pancreatic stabwound.

RESUMEN

Varicose veins and venous insufficiency are causes of significant morbidity. In North America 10% to 17% of the adult population is affected, an incidence 10 times that of arterial disease. Despite this, origin and mechanism of disease remain obscure. This study was designed to illustrate the presence of patent arteriovenous shunts in the varicosed limb and to assess their role. Twenty-eight women and twenty-one men with primary varicose veins were studied. Thirty-six men and seven women without venous disease served as a control group. Blood samples were collected from an arm vein and a limb varicosity in the study group along with an arterial blood sample. Blood samples were also drawn from an arm vein and the femoral vein in the control group along with an arterial blood sample. Venous partial oxygen pressure (PVO2) and hemoglobin saturation (HbSat) were measured and venous oxygen content (CVO2) calculated. Mean values were then obtained and statistical comparisons made between each group. A statistically significant increase (p less than 0.001) in all three parameters--PVO2, HbSat, and CVO2--was demonstrated in the patients' limbs with varicose veins, consistent with a functioning arteriovenous shunt.

RESUMEN

Segmental small and large bowel transit time of 25 healthy volunteers have been studied, as a control group, by means of radio-opaque markers prepared and administered according to an original method. The same study has been subsequently carried out on 37 patients suffering for chronic non organic constipation. The resulting data, though poorly homogeneous, may however, be plotted in 8 classes; each class groups subjects presenting very similar segmental transit time whose changes are less than 4 hours. The first class gathers the 8.1% of the cases, presenting in increased small bowel transit time; the patients of the second class (5.4%) has resulted affected by "right colon constipation syndrome"; another 5.4% of patients, plotted in the third class have shown a permanence time of the markers in the transverse colon of about 190 hours, while the 10.8% fourth class and the 16.2% fifth class have presented a 97 and 150 hours' one respectively. The patients of the sixth class (21.6%) have shown long lasting permanence of markers in the left colon and in the rectum. The 13.5% of cases, gathered in seventh class, has shown an increased transit time through the whole colon, while at last the eight class (19.0% of patients) has resulted affected by dischezia. The described method has thus revealed useful in the study of bowel segmental transit time from a topographic diagnostic point of view.

RESUMEN

The Authors report their experience of postoperative cholangiomanometry carried out through a T-tube on 19 patients; in 13 of such patients the Oddi's sphincter was intact, while 6 of them underwent sphincterectomy. In 8 patient's a manometric study of the duodenum was associated. They performed both variable flow and pressure and constant flow manometry and their results show that such examination is a reliable test both for the functional evaluation of the surgical procedure, and for the study of the action of various drugs on Oddi's sphincter function and its correlation with duodenal motility.
