[Morbidity of iliac bone grafts. A study apropos of 100 consecutive cases]. / Morbidité des prises de greffes osseuses iliaques. Etude à propos de 100 cas consécutifs.

A study of the real morbidity after iliac bone graft harvesting was conducted on a homogenous series of 100 consecutive cases. Functional and aesthetic consequences were evaluated in relation to the immediate post-operative course and the long-term follow-up and in relation to the indication, the technique used and the amount of bone removed. Considering the small number of sequelae observed, autogenous iliac bone graft remains the best material for craniomaxillofacial reconstruction. The main disadvantage consists of the resorptions noted; which raises the possibility of using other types of bone grafts or bio-materials in some indications.

The authors discuss the results of 29 cases of tissue expansion, using 40 expanders, at the head and neck level, in an attempt to achieve a constructive self-criticism. The results have been classified into excellent (18 over 28 cases), good (4/29), fair (3/29) and poor (4/29). Complications were those usually reported: pain, infection, wound dehiscence, reservoir failure. In summary, 23 of 29 patients have definitely gained from tissue expansion. The remaining 6 cases considered as failures are carefully discussed leading to some practical conclusions.
