RESUMEN

With the expansion of the COVID-19 vaccination drive, an increasing number of adverse effects are surfacing. A 74-year-old woman presented with multiple erythematous and itchy patches on several sites. She had no relevant medical history, apart from the first AZD1222 vaccination 1 month previously. Microscopically, epidermal changes, including mild spongiosis and parakeratosis, were observed. Tight perivascular lymphocytic infiltration (coat-sleeve pattern) was also observed in the dermis. The final diagnosis was erythema annulare centrifugum (EAC) induced by SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Based on this report, dermatologists should be aware of the possibility of EAC from the AZD1222 vaccination.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress and high workload in physicians can lead to loss of interest, emotional exhaustion and finally in burnout syndrome. This can cause serious consequences not only for the physicians personally and their own health by developing extensive health impairments, e.g. depression, suicide, substance abuse and poor self-care but also for patient care, reflected in an increase of medical errors, longer recovery times, lower care quality and consequently lower patient satisfaction. Additionally, it can also have negative effects on the healthcare system by reduced productivity, increased physician turnover and thereby higher costs. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study investigated brief interventions inspired by mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) combined with short daily meditation exercises in the everyday work of anesthetists at a university hospital. Secondly, whether this program increases the development of coping mechanisms for stress and improves participants' resilience and health status. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The pilot study was designed as a monocenter prospective interventional study with four different points of measurement. Subjective and objective stress parameters were measured directly before (t0) and after (t1) the intervention as well as 3 (t2) and 6 (t3) months after end of the intervention. Measurements took place during work time and at the workplace. The intervention was based on the classical MBSR including short daily exercises and lasted for 6 weeks with sessions lasting 1- 1.5 h and an additional 20 min of daily mediation exercises. The subjective parameters were based on validated questionnaires, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) well-being index (WHO-5), resilience scale (RS-11), Maslach burnout inventory (MBI-22) and perceived stress scale (PSS-10). For objective parameters heart rate variability (HRV) was evaluated during rest and after exposure to physical exercise and hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) in a 1.5 cm length of a hair, which represents the equivalent of a 6-week period. RESULTS: Data from 27 subjects could be analyzed. Between t3 and t0 a significant improvement of resilience was detected as a positive personality trait measured by RS-11 with a large effect size (p = 0.013; r = 0.59) as well as a significant reduction of burnout symptoms (MBI-22) also with a large effect size (p = 0.019; r = 0.57). Furthermore, a significant decrease was found in well-being (WHO-5) between t2 and t0 (p = 0.003, r = 0.67) and between t1 and t0 (p = 0.001, r = 0.71). The objective parameters did not show any significant differences between the examinations. CONCLUSION: An MBSR-based intervention in combination with short exercises during and after work can be implemented in daily work of anesthetists at a university hospital. Furthermore, there was clear evidence that the intervention program increased resilience and reduced burnout symptoms for up to 6 months. These findings are in line with the literature that MBSR reduces risk of burnout symptoms. The decrease in well-being might be biased by a high amount of socially accepted answers at the beginning of the study (t0).

RESUMEN

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression in response to biotic and abiotic stress in plants. We investigated gamma-ray-responsive miRNAs in Arabidopsis wild-type and cmt3-11t mutant plants using miRNA microarray analysis. miRNA expression was differentiated between the wild-type and cmt3-11t mutants. miR164a, miR169d, miR169h, miR172b*, and miR403 were identified as repressible in the wild-type and/or cmt3-11t mutant in response to gamma irradiation, while miR827, miR840, and miR850 were strongly inducible. These eight miRNA genes contain UV-B-responsive cis-elements, including G-box, I-box core, ARE, and/or MBS in the putative promoter regions. Moreover, Box 4, MBS, TCA-element, and Unnamed_4, as well as CAAT- and TATA-box, were identified in these eight miRNA genes. However, a positive correlation between the transcriptions of miRNAs and their putative target genes was only observed between miR169d and At1g30560 in the wild-type, and between miR827 and At1g70700 in the cmt3-11t mutant. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis confirmed that the transcription of miR164a, miR169d, miR169h, miR172b*, miR403, and miR827 differed after gamma irradiation depending on the genotype (wild-type, cmt3-11t, drm2, drd1-6, and ddm1-2) and developmental stage (14 or 28 days after sowing). In contrast, high transcriptional induction of miR840 and miR850 was observed in these six genotypes regardless of the developmental stage. Although the actual target genes and functions of miR840 and miR850 remain to be determined, our results indicate that these two miRNAs may be strongly induced and reproducible genetic markers in Arabidopsis plants exposed to gamma rays.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that chemoattractive proteins play an important role in the organization of the innate and adaptive immune responses. There are some reports that chemokine (C-C motif) ligand (CCL)1 and CCL18, members of a family of chemoattractive proteins, have increased expression in atopic dermatitis (AD). AIM: To evaluate the quantity and pattern of CCL1 and CCL18 expression in lesions and blood of patients with AD, and compare them with those of patients with psoriasis. METHODS: Biopsy specimens were taken from atopic skin and normal-appearing skin of patients with AD and from the psoriatic skin only of patients with psoriasis. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis and immunohistochemistry of CCL1 and CCL18 expression were performed, and the quantities of expressed CCL1 and CCL18 in acute AD were compared with those of normal-appearing atopic skin and psoriatic skin. The serum level of CCL1 and CCL18 was assessed by ELISA. RESULTS: Expression of CCL1 mRNA and protein was significantly higher in the acute lesional skin of patients with AD than in their nonlesional skin or in the lesional skin of patients with psoriasis. Both CCL18 mRNA and protein were abundant in acute AD lesions and in psoriatic lesions, but were lower in the nonlesional skin of patients with AD. The serum levels of CCL1 and CCL18 were not different in patients with AD and patients with psoriasis. CONCLUSIONS: CCL1 is a chemokine that is associated with AD. Both CCL1 and CCL18 may play important roles in the initiation and progression of atopic skin inflammation.

RESUMEN

Ciliary disorders share typical features, such as polydactyly, renal and biliary cystic dysplasia, and retinitis pigmentosa, which often overlap across diagnostic entities. We report on two siblings of consanguineous parents and two unrelated children, both of unrelated parents, with co-occurrence of Joubert syndrome and Jeune asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy, an association that adds to the observation of common final patterns of malformations in ciliary disorders. Using homozygosity mapping in the siblings, we were able to exclude all known genes/loci for both syndromes except for INVS, AHI1, and three genes from the previously described Jeune locus at 15q13. No pathogenic variants were found in these genes by direct sequencing. In the third child reported, sequencing of RPGRIP1L, ARL13B, AHI1, TMEM67, OFD1, CC2D2A, and deletion analysis of NPHP1 showed no mutations. Although this study failed to identify a mutation in the patients tested, the co-occurrence of Joubert and Jeune syndromes is likely to represent a distinct entity caused by mutations in a yet to be discovered gene. The mechanisms by which certain organ systems are affected more than others in the spectrum of ciliary diseases remain largely unknown.

RESUMEN

This study was to evaluate the degradation efficiency of naturally contaminated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sewage sludge by using electron beam irradiation as a function of the absorbed dose. Degradation efficiency of PAHs was near to 90% at the absorbed doses 5 kGy. The degradation of PAHs was "first order" reaction rates with respect to absorbed dose. The electron beam irradiation was found effective in means of removing PAHs in domestic wastewater.

RESUMEN

Various N-aryl-4-phenyl-3-(4-phenoxyphenyl)butanamides (2 and 3) were tested for fungicidal activities against Pyricularia oryzae, Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinerea, Phytophthora infestans, Puccinia recondita, and Erysiphe graminis in vivo. Butanamides (2 and 3a) that have an electron withdrawing group (Cl, F) attached to the meta position of the phenyl ring showed good to excellent activities against Pyricularia oryzae, Puccinia recondita, and Erysiphe graminis in high concentration while those that have a strong electron withdrawing group (CN, NO2) or electron donating group (OCH3, CH3) attached to the meta position did not show good activities against all test fungi at 250 mg L-1. The antifungal activities of the compounds synthesized were compared with reference compounds such as Tricyclazole, Moncozeb, and Benomyl.

RESUMEN

Several oxazolidinones having amine moiety were prepared to form a quaternary ammonium salt with cephalosporin nucleus, and antibacterial activity of the quaternary ammonium cephalosporin derivatives bearing oxazolidinone moiety were examined particularly with expectation of dual activity. However, the cephalosporin-oxazolidinone compounds revealed rather weaker antibacterial activity in vitro than their parent oxazolidinone and cephalosporin without showing any characteristic activity as expected.

RESUMEN

Pseudoaneurysm of the aorta usually occurs as a complication of nonpenetrating trauma or deceleration injuries. Spontaneous pseudoaneurysm of the aorta is, however, extremely rare. Pulmonary veins can be affected in this situation because of the anatomic proximity. However, it is often overlooked during clinical examination, during routine echocardiography, and even at invasive angiography. This report describes the importance of transesophageal echocardiography in the detection of pulmonary vein compression, which is not suspected during other noninvasive and invasive diagnostic tests, in a patient with spontaneous pseudoaneurysm of the descending thoracic aorta.
