PIP: Problems involved in the attempt to develop a population atlas for Latin America are described. These include the inadequacy of available historical data, the complexity of migration patterns, and the inadequacies of data on migration and economic activity. The problems of data comparability among countries are noted.^ieng

[Demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the population in metropolitan regions]. / Caracteristicas demograficas e socio-economicas da populacao nas regioes metropolitanas.

PIP: Three different types of metropolitan region in Brazil are first identified. These are areas of contention (Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro), areas of discipline and control (Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, and Porto Alegre), and areas of discipline and dynamism (Belem, Fortaleza, Recife, and Salvador). The population characteristics of these three metropolitan types are compared, with reference to age and sex distribution, literacy, education, economic activity, occupation, and income.^ieng
